Straight out of my neck of the woods. I’ve seen these guys many times over the years. You mentioned Rock Candy should reissue the first three albums, Tommy Redd told me that it was happening at some point because they interviewed him for the liner notes.
Prior to announcement/ didn’t know one song. 🎵. I’m ten spins in/ each of the 6 albums. Still, listening as we speak . There is no right answer/ all for fun and learning new groups you are unfamiliar with. I will post my Ranking by ten am Sunday am. Thx Pete and Grant 👍💯
I used to see Nantucket in all of the rock magazines of the 70's and 80's such as Hit Parader, Circus and Creem with interviews and who the band members were and I remember that they had two keyboard players in the early days they were a nice band at the time I always liked them but I forgot all about them until this ranking here Thanks.🎵🎶🎼🎼🎶🎵
I saw Nantucket open for Molly Hatchet in October of 1980. Loved that they did a tribute cover song to Bon. I was a big fan of the Bon Scott era of AC/DC and thought it was cool they did that. I bought that third album after the concert and spun it a ton. I got the first two later on and loved them as well. Long Way To The Top is still my favorite. Good stuff..
Nantucket was formed in 1969 in Jacksonville, NC as a school band by the quartet of Larry and Mike Uzzell, Mark Downing and Tommy Redd. The early group went under the name of 'Stacks Of Gold' - playing mostly R&B, soul & beach music covers - until adopting the title of the Mountain track 'Nantucket Sleighride' in 1971, shortening it to Nantucket soon afterwards.
I remember seeing a record once. That's all I can say. After seeing this ranking, now I've GOTTA hear #5. Lol. Thanks for the entertainment guys. Always fun.
Only the songs "Heartbreaker" which peaked at # 121 (July 1978) & "Gimme Your Love" at # 120 (August 1979) only charted on Record World (which the company ended in April of 1982). The album "Long Way To The Top" went to # 206 for 1 week (Billboard Bubbling Under The Top 200 Albums) on August 30, 1980.
Greetings Pete and Grant. As a native North Carolinian, we know this band well. Saw them in clubs back in the early and mid 80s. Tight band and superb players. Debut still holds up today.
Yes, I liked Nantucket back then and bought the records as they came out. Was due to see them on an upstate NY outdoor festival type show in July '78 but they didn't end up playing on the day because of time constraints. So I never did see them in concert.
The group Lake who's lead singer almost sounds like former Yes singer Jon Anderson did a song called "Time Bomb" in 1978 from their self-titled!! (not the remake though)
Never heard a tune from Nantucket although I would see their albums advertised in various music magazines back in the day. Never checked them out possibly because of the nautical identity/lobsters and my aversion to seafood! I will check them out!
If my brain isn't playing tricks on me, I think I heard the Nantucket version of Long Way to the Top before the original AC/DC version. It definitely got some airplay on the local AOR station.
Unknown to me It has to be like crack the sky mainly a regional band. Now that's a band I bet Pete and Grant could really get into quickly Especially their 75 debut through about 83. But they're one of those bands that have formed and reformed through the years.😊
Glad you put this together. I loved the album Long Way to the Top, especially Living with You. It is southern rock to a degree but sometimes it morphs. Great stuff.
Fairly decent airplay in Saint Louis Missouri back in the day. The main songs I remember were "Heartbrraker", Quite Like You ', snd my favorite "California.
my mom and dad were great friends with tommy redd. if you notice, the reason why the first two albums were quirky, it’s because tommy wrote every song. it slowed down with the third album because he didn’t write every song. the ac/dc cover ended up getting them an opening slot on the back in black tour, so that’s one good thing that came from it.
Saw Nantucket open for Kiss, Cheap Trick and AC/DC and they were great every time. And since you guys mentioned Rock Candy how about a ranking of the band T.K.O. which Rock Candy has reissued.
Great episode, thanks guys! I grew up in Myrtle Beach and remember Nantucket well. Perry Richardson, founding member of Firehouse/currently in Stryper, briefly played bass in Nantucket. Another great band from that era and circuit was Sidewinder featuring Audley Freed who later went on to Government Mule, Black Crowes, Sheryl Crowe, etc.
Several excellent albums, relatively short 1977-79 lifespan in terms of albums I like. Their 1980 Ball Room & 1978 On The Edge I think are their worst. The s/t debut & Cats On The Coast (to me their best), plus a couple tracks off the live Hotels, Motels And Road Shows. Long Walk On A Short Pier has "Canine Man", "Just A Touch", "Too Many Broken Hearts" & "A Two 'n Two" plus maybe the best track off that album "Twenty Miles From Nowhere"...Some may not know that Joe English of Wings was in the band
@@GrantsRockWarehaus ...with 7 good tracks - so that makes it a 7/8 track...? I've come across a web site before that still sells old 8-track tapes. They've got this one for like 20 bucks - if you feel nostalgic. They also show up on eBay occasionally
Pete, if you check out The Hunt. Start with the 1977 debut The Hunt. They are Hard rock, progressive rock. The first song sounds like a Jethro Tull tune. You will here other influences Deep Purple (I want to be king) among others. If you dig that album check out 1980 Back On The Hunt. The Cd has 9 bonus tracks. The third and final album The Thrill Of The Kill they start to get a little heavier. All three albums are here on youtube. Most of the members are made up of another Canadian band called Dillinger (heavy progressive rock). 1974 self titled and 1975 Don't Lie To The Band. You might want to check them out as well.
Dillinger's pretty good, two albums of which Don't Lie To The Band from '75 is the better one. From The Hunt I've got their 2nd & 3rd. I don't have the s/t debut but have heard it - not bad. Don't particularly like the Tull tune but there are at least 5 other good tracks on that one - will have to track it down. I didn't like their heavier sound on The Thrill Of The Kill as much
Grant's finally getting some air time...😎Seriously though Nantucket - you'd think from their name that they were a Northeast band but no - from SC. Their original name was Nantucket Sleighride (thank you Mountain). They did have some fine moments, especially on the first two (70's) records. "Heartbreaker" off the 1978 debut was a hit for them, in addition I like 6 other tracks. Very solid album. Their followup Your Face Or Mine is almost as good - again very solid with 6 quality tracks. Their 1980 Long Way To The Top (tribute to AC/DC) with a changed band lineup is pretty good - there are several tunes worth listening to. I've seen that album panned online but for me it's not bad... Some label them as 'Southern Rock' but they don't sound particularly Southern to me (at least most of the time). They did try a reunion in the early 90's but honestly I skipped anything post-reunion, as well as most of the two mid 80's albums (No Direction Home & V). No Direction Home (Never Felt This Way Before" & "I Didn't Want To Lose You" are good tracks) features more lineup changes, to me they now sound like a different band, some of the earlier catchy hooks are gone & they kinda merged into the early 80's musical landscape. To be fair I did like two later tunes: "The General Has Left Us" & "You Need A Ride To Raleigh" - both jazzy numbers off their 2011 EP You Need A Ride To Raleigh. If you didn't know the band you'd never associate those tunes with the original Nantucket though. Never heard the spinoff power trio PKM's 1985 album Rock Erotica - might be worth tracking down...Other related bands: Chris Duarte, Cry Of Love (great 1997 album Diamonds & Debris), Dag (1994's Righteous). My album ranking (it's very much in chronological order except for the 2011 EP): 1. S/T debut 2. You Flace Or Mine 3. Long Way to the Top 4. No Direction Home 5. You Need A Ride To Raleigh (EP) 5. V & the live Still Live after All These Years There's also The Unreleased D.C. Tapes from 2005 which I don't have...
What a strange video to see. Growing up in Altoona, Pa. I swear I was the only person who owned Nantucket albums. I would compare trying to find another fan to locating a UFO in the sky. Just not happening unless you live at Skinwalker Ranch or perhaps Hudson Valley NY. That said I do concur with your findings.

It's easy to see why this band never made the big time. The rockier elements are great but then they all too often to chance the pop charts with the sudden move to the soft harmonies that a million and one US bands were putting out at the time. The fact that these changes were happening within the same track just distracts from the harder rock sound, making songs feel very disjointed and killing the initial vibe. I wonder if there was some REO Speedwagon/Styx envy that they were attempting to reproduce. Some definite Kevin Cronin envy at times.

Their debut album and "Your Face or Mine" (second album) are a great listen. They got significant air play in St Louis in the late 70s early 80s.
They were unnoticed here in Central Ohio
Another band you guys are introducing me to . Thanks Peter and Grant 👍
I remember them very well!! I saw them several times in eastern NC in the late 70s and early 80s. Killer stuff!!!
That would've been their heyday so probably good shows
Never Been Any Reason - Head East, is the song you were thinking about! Love it!
