I tried this many years ago before watching this video on a 60s Rogers bass drum. I not only caught it on fire, I then dropped it on my deck where it rolled down the stairs and across the yard like a flaming tire after a horrible car wreck.
A sound comparison of resonance differences between a wrapped and unwrapped (and stained) drum would be nice. Does the wrap alter the sound? Does stain?
I have a '75 Ludwig jazz set with ugly, cracked wrap. I was able to get the wrap off all the drums without damaging the shells. On the rack tom, the glue came off (tediously), but I can't seem to find anything to work on the floor and bass. Tried the heat gun on low to soften the glue. Didn't work. Tried spraying it with Goof Off. Didn't work. Covered it in adhesive/paint stripper from Lowe's. That only helped remove the outer coat of glue. Might add that the entire shell is covered in glue, not just the wrap seams. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Another great video. I just picked up a Ludwig Custom Accent Jazz drum set (Chinese made). Is there a trick or shortcut to use the wrap is slightly loose on one side and a small area of the floor tom. I now know how to remove the wrap - but was hoping I don’t have to-because most likely I won’t be able to find the wrap to replace it. Help? What adhesive is a good one to use on drum shells? thank you!!!
Hey man, how bout repairing/refinishing or filling drums (rack toms with tube arm mounts going inside the drum or non virgin bass drums) with holes in them from tube arms mounts or rack Tom mounts on bass drums? Do you have any videos on those kind of drum restorations or can make one? Thanks bro!
What would you recommend I do for making a gong drum out of an old 16 inch floor tom? I don't know who to go about it, but from what I understand about gong drums they use an oversized head (much like a timpani drum) so I would assume that I could get away with just making spacers for the lugs.
I'm in the middle of restoring a drum set for my school and the wraps are glued all the way around. I've been using isopropyl alcohol to dissolve the glue and then just peeling it off. Is this damaging the shell? I already did half the kit, so it's a little late if it is. If anybody has any other tips, I'd love to hear them. The wraps being glued all the way around makes the removal process awfully tedious.
Its probably held down with contact cement. So heat will help, but try using acetone. Its stronger than alcohol. What youre doing, or using acetone, wont damage the shell because it evaporates so fast.
I recently peeled the wrap off of an old snare, but I still can't get the air vent off. I I believe it's one of the vents that's put in by hammering it. How do I remove it?
Ola David . Feliz Ano Novo. Tenho uma Pearl Kapur / fiberglass, você sabe me informar como limpar a parte interna e externa dela ( produtos ) obrigado.
I have a '75 Ludwig set with a sparkle wrap that is badly cracked and chipped. The 9x13 wrap was easy to remove with the heat gun. However, the glue on the floor tom and bass are being difficult. No amount scraping, rubbing, heat gun, or peeling is working. Any suggestions?
Hey David. Great job on the video. I bought a cheap drum shell pack an almost all the screws are stripped. Do you have a way to take them of with out damaging the drum
Tanks for the tips My names Matt and you inspired me to refinish my kit I've gotten a lot of knowledge from you that has help a lot I just wanted to say thank you!
Any tips on how to remove glue from wood other than scraping it off? I just got back into my room after removing some wrap from a cheap Millenium rack tom I got for experimentation. That shit was glued tight ALL THE WAY AROUND. Took me almost two hours to remove that thing with my hairdryer, and now the wood is covered in glue residue everywhere...
@@westonnemitz1093 Sand it down reeeeal thoroughly. With the other drums: Be extra patient when heating up the plastic wrap. You shouldn't have to use much force at all - does take long though. The hair dryer is not the ideal tool
@@BNLNRD thanks for the tips, I’m removing the wraps off of some Borg toms right now, did not go well. Was way too fast for the floor tom so she splintered real bad, plus now they are all covered in gunk. Will try my best though
@@westonnemitz1093 Sorry to hear that. There's no easy way out, sadly. I treated the splintered parts with diluted wood filler. Plenty on sanding afterwards, but worth it. After spray painting the shells you couldn't see anything anymore!
@@BNLNRD got some stuff called “Goo Gone” to remove the glue gunk, and I’m just gonna sand then as good as I can. Hopefully it will look fine once it’s painted!
Doesn’t go quite as well with old tama mahogany shells as they have a very porous surface and Tama seem to have used some spray glue to hold the wrap on. Nothing a little wood filler couldn’t fix (pre rewrap). Just more work but all good.
honestly it's more of a personal preference really. if you like the look and all. I know they do protect the wood from the elements and general wear and tear so if you didn't want it on there you'd at lease want to stain or laquer it so the wood is protected
+Ricardo Ayon yup it'll just be a preference of color at that point. most stains apply exactly the same. Any hardware store will have a chart of colors that'll give you an idea of what it'll look like. as far as applying it's pretty simple, but if you're not sure there's plenty of videos on applying stain to wood.
It is possible, but with a hair dryer it doesn't get nearly as hot. You would be there forever and risk damaging the shells. It's worth it to get a heat gun you can find them for like $10 at harbor freight :)
once i bought a cheap 12" tom (even though i already have one) just so i could paint it and the wrap was held on by the lugs. i took the hardware off then it literally fell off. i thought the wrap removal was the hardest part!. also on a side note, i painted it with a test pot of wall paint and then sprayed small dots of purple all around it. looks great and still using it.
+syntheticrebellion yeah I know I was jusft suprised that it had evans ec2s, nice clean hardware and under the wrap, a stained shell. not sure why they put a crusty white wrap on it...
if you scuff it up it should stick if you use contact cement. But if you add another layer the lugs might stick out too far and the tension rods would be angled slightly.
So burning the wood on the drums doesn't add to the sound or flavor of the drums unlike with whiskey or bourbon. Good to know. BTW, I would have lost it and gotten out a sledgehammer when the air vent didn't come out with a few hammer blows.
I don't know if you mention this in the vid and I missed it but... do not do this with a vintage Ludwig 3 ply. It isn't nearly as easy as this and you may not like what you find underneath the wrap. Also you will almost definitely end up using wood filler on the places where part of the ply comes off with the wrap. And whatever that adhesive was that Ludwig used is veryveryvery hard to remove. You will end up taking off some of the outer ply in the process of removing the adhesive. That's in addition to the wood that came off when you removed the wrap. TL;DR Don't do this with a vintage 3 ply even if the wrap is really crappy
I found that a heavy, rugged, single keyboard sissor stand is great to use working on drums. Seemingly... almost NONE of the factory latching positions ever fit the shell I'm working on.... but that's easily "fixed" with a cheap nylon ratchet strap looped through the bottom legs. Also, I wrap the top bars in folded paper shop towels and tape them on to protect the drum. Just sayin'..... PS.... if you work on guitars, a garage sale ironing board with a pad is great. You can work from either side without turning the instrument around (with the pickups or controls hanging out). Shouldn't scratch if you wash the padded cover every now and then. Actually TWO covers are better. Older, heavier ironing boards with good legs and the longest/widest footprint you can get are the best. Just sayin' again....
I don't know if anyone watches this in 2020, but I have a slightly different problem. I have a Tama Hyperdrive with a wrap and it just doesn't have a cut. Wrap is completely closed. I don't know if cutting it is smart.

Having A LOT of trouble with the glue. Any advice?
Nice video, but what if a wrap has the glue/adhesive covering all of the shell (ie. Not glued on at the end of the wrap)?
CR7TheGunner I have the same question...I suspect heating and light scraping and then sand. I’m recovering a drum that was recovered before...
It's the same process it just takes a LOT longer to do...
Can you "burn" the wood on purpose?? Would it have different sonic properties?
I'd love to see that!
Would a blow dryer work, or does it not get hot enough?
idk, give it a try
some hair dryers work on a high heat setting but depends on the dryer

Great video man. Do you have a video specific to putting on new air vents with original badges?
just put one out yesterday actually haha
rdavidr can’t wait!

so the the wrap im trying to remove doesn't have a seam. any advice?
are you sure its a wrap? you can always score it to get it started
Want to know what'll protect you from that heat? GLOVES!!!! lol
I wish you would've put this out like a week ago haha. I spent like three hours sanding the adhesive off
bearing edges! i need the cheepest and easyest way to get decent round out and 35(or something) in on cheep poplar shells.
please help
I know its been 4 years but get a router and a 35 degree bit and that will do it or ask a friend to borrow theirs hope this helpss
How do you stain drum shells?
But I like how he explains it.... hahahaha I connect with him
What about removing paint or stain from a drum?
Sandpaper.
How long did it take you to make the intro to this video? That is a lot of moving drums.
Do you think a car vinyl wrap would work on a wood shell? 🤔
do i need drum wraps on my set?
No, not particularly. It can make the set look nicer depending what you're into but it doesn't really affect quality if its on or not.
Alright, and said something about staining the wood. That can be done with any stainer right?

Why not just lay the new wrap on top of the existing one? That would ensure a smooth surface to work on. Or wouldn't the adhesive work?
