      That really goes for a lot of more modern FPS (post-Doom games, though in Doom the chain-gun made a decent semi-auto sniper - if you did a two round burst both shots were always accurate), you only want to "spray and pray" when a single/several fast targets are in your face and you have no other choice

      I'm actually frankly surprised at the numerous bits on the video where Probe is referred to, quite matter-of-factly as if there was a general consensus about it, as a crappy developer. Honestly, both their original ip games for 8 bit computers, like Trantor and Savage, and also their works based on licences, like Out Run Europa, were widely loved and renowned amongst fans and critics alike. Even their work during the 90s, after their acquisition by Acclaim, was way more hit than miss, with many huge hits, both commercial and critic-wise, - T2, Alien3, Alien Trilogy, Die Hard Trilogy, Extreme G, to name a few - making up for the misses - which could be blamed, more often than not, on poor upper management and rushed development cycles more than a lack of talent.

    Being a big fan of the Aliens movies, I was so excited about playing this one, and although I liked it in many ways, I preferred Aliens Vs Predator on the Atari Jaguar, simply because of the atmosphere of the game. The soundtrack on Alien trilogy simply takes the tension out of it, as opposed to the Atari game, where you only hear the humming of the power generators throughout the game. I also prefer the Atari version where you can roam freely on the entire base instead of this level to level design. I almost crapped my pants a thousand times while playing AvP on the Jaguar, whereas Alien Trilogy was more like a river cruise, where you don't really feel nervous about what's coming around the corner.

      @@KRAFTWERK2K6 The 3DO version was a whole other level of incompetence because the guy who bought the rights to make the 3DO version thought he knew how to make games, but had no clue and the programmer brought in had a very short time to make it because 3DO wanted Doom in time for Christmas.
      The Saturn port was Carmack's fault and has even said himself he made a mistake. John Romero was on vacation and usually would have been the one to make the decision and would have given the okay to how it was being made for Saturn at that point.

    Holy shit, these games honestly look really cool. I've always loved the aesthetic of the early 3D graphics era of PC and console games. They're much more interesting looking than hyper-realistic games.

    You mentioned the Saturn’s poor conversion of Doom. Saturn Doom was programmed by veteran programmer Jim Bagley. I attended a question and answer session with him presenting. He explained that he had Saturn Doom running brilliantly. My memory is hazy at this point but if I recall Jim was told by John Romero that he had to code the engine a specific way. Jim explained that he wouldn’t be able to get the performance that way but was told it was that or nothing. Totally bonkers.

    Two Things:
    1) Seeming that this game was released a month after Duke Nukem 3D Episode I, I wonder if 3D Realms were influenced by Alien Trilogy to create Lunar Apocalypse as a shout out; coincidently, both the facehugger and Protozoid Slimer attack design obstructs the field of view. Full version of Duke 3D was not completed until May 1996.
    2) I still miss Acclaim Entertainment, Inc.

    This is the only FPS game in my life, where I hated the extremely low FOV (field of vision) so much to the point where I couldn't play it, no matter how much I tried - it was THAT annoying. Usually narrow FOV is not a problem for me, in fact I don't like to play with horizontal FOV's wider than 90 degrees ("Doom standard" as I call it) even in widescreen. But, man, this game had like a 45 degrees horizontal FOV if not even less. It was like looking at the world through a keyhole. I felt it was unacceptable even at the time it came out. I always loved the Aliens franchise and the dark gritty atmosphere in this game was top notch. Hell, I wanted to play it and enjoy it so much, but this FOV aspect f..ked everything up for me, I just couldn't play it. And it was the only game in my life where I actually hated the FOV. I feel I need to stress this point, because I am actually not that choosey about this aspect, but Alien Trilogy's FOV is unreasonably low, I'd call it unplayable tbh. Basically it is so ridiculously narrow, it eclipses all the good stuff in the game.

    Looks like more fun than Fallout 76 which I am playing right now. (F76 isn't that bad, but it's just so slow. All the faffing about with inventory brings gameplay to a halt far too often. Like after almost every mission, I have to rearrange stuff in stash, sell or scrap weapons, compare weapons, upgrade, repair weapons and armour. Make food. Oh *expletives*, it just goes on and on.

    It Sucks, way too hard and the only way to make it fair is to use the unlimited ammo and invincibility password cheats and even then it's still impossible to get past section 1 level 7 because when you try to activate some switches it says Battery Required but you can't find the battery. I spent over an hour on section 1 level 7 and gave up because I could not find a battery to activate a switch, I had found one earlier in the stage but it for some reason was no longer in my inventory so I assume it annoyingly makes it so batteries have limited capacity making the game impossible for the non super skilled game player because even if you don't have to worry about running out of life or ammo you still have to figure out where switches are and what they activate and not waste the battery on them more than necessary because you have to conserve their power for other switches that you need to flip in order to complete the level and if you don't perfectly conserve their power you have to get killed and start the level all over again.

    I remember Turok being ripped apart for it's fog. Even today it's the first thing someone will say about that game. But games like Alien Trilogy and plenty of other FPS on PS1/SAT get a pass. Nobody mentions the pop-up or limited draw distance in these games. I wonder why the double standards. Not to mention how Turok features huge outdoor areas and fully 3D enemies, so it would be impossible for it having unlimited draw distance on the N64. But what;s Alien's excuse for this kind of pop-up?

    • @KryptKicker5
      @KryptKicker5 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's precisely because Turok was outdoors that the fog became more of a sticking point. You expect something like Alien to be dark and foreboding so most people probably didn't think anything of it. Alien Resurrection is still probably the best looking shooter on the PS1.

    • @Imgema
      @Imgema 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah but technically, rendering big, outdoor areas is far more demanding for the console, compared to indoor corridors. So maybe thematically it made more sense for Turok to not have fog and Alien Trilogy to have limited view, but technically it was the opposite. So i think it was unfair for Turok to be criticized so heavily for it. Besides, there wasn't a single fully 3D FPS game (that also had 3D enemies and models) with outdoor areas that didn't have some kind of pop-up. Ok maybe Quake 1 but the 3D models in Turok were far superior and way ahead anything at the time.

    When you vs the queens you can use a pulse rifle with max ammo and it does enough damage consistently to push the queen back over and over and she never reaches you and you kill her before you run out of ammo.

    In my experience the PS1 version is definitely the better version, for me the Saturn port had a lot fps drops/slowdown and also a weird issue were the pistol didn't always make a sound when firing. I was playing the PAL version at 60hz so it's possible that could have been causing issues, but regardless I sold the Saturn version and bought the PS1 version instead.
