I think it counts as an improvement if my friends no longer roll their eyes or announce they have emergency dental surgery when I ask if they want to look at my photos .

What you say rings true for me. I'm happy to be in my eighth year of taking photography as a hobby. I see progress, of course. My plan is to spend another 2 years on it and then look back at ten years of photos.

For me points number 2 and number 3 are becoming more noticeable. Compositions that used to excite me becomes typical or easy shots, I sometimes ignore some of it unless I can do something different or as you said, there's an additional layer to it. And in choosing which lens to use for a certain shoot, I'm starting to plan out the route that I'll walk along to and understanding what kind of subjects I'll encounter as well. Great video as always Roman!

I think of two very specific scenarios that will improve your photography. 1) When you go travelling, and 2) when you're running dangerously low on SSD storage.
When you go travelling, you realise you can't just bring a sack of batteries and lenses with you; you have to know what you're doing and switch fast or plan your lens usage. Maybe start off the day with some sightseeing (telephoto lens works great) then you enter a museum (prime lens is best - low light), then when you return to the hotel in the evening just leave the telephoto in the room because at night you're only using wide apertures.
When you run out of space, you look at your useless, repetitive photos and start deleting them. There you start to realise where you lack skill, and you start to understand how to save battery, save space and take better photos.

Blinder. Loving your style. You can see it in your videos too. Not that your early ones were less impressive. You have a really relaxed style that is fact based and very true. Keep up the great work. 👍🏻👍🏻👌

Thank you for the tips, they make sense! We need to know for ourselves if we are making a progress. People will rarely give us constructive criticism. And other photographers don't want you to be better than them. It's a tough world out there. The path to success is a lonely road. The guidance of kool people like you is greatly appreciated.

I just discover your videos. Like them very much because of a normal, casual approach. I would add to see your photos on paper. I did just that this year for my fav photos of the last year and will continue to do so after watching Tom Tuckers video about prints... I will compare my achievements every year to see if there is a progress or not :>

Yes, though you only said it in passing conclusion, I feel my photographs are improving because I've LEARNED something. It's not just instinct and practice. I have to learn a technique, apply it, then analyze if it works for me. It's not just practice makes perfect. And if my photographs aren't improving, my Learned knowledge gives me more appreciation for understanding great photographs. Learn to improve.

I love your style Roman, and I have learnt a great deal from you, and not just about photography, the point about being able to put criticism in context has given me food for thought in other areas - and also your comment about comparing yourself to an average day's shooting in the earlier years, not the best. I really enjoyed seeing the pictures of London, makes me realise how much I took it for granted when I lived there. There are lots of youtubers who try to 'talk' to their audience, but you have great integrity in the way you do it and it really comes across. Keep doing what you do.

Perfect timing for me. 2 years in. Useuuse 2mm on fuji. I've noticed i crop in to about a 50mm. I switched to 35mm f2 and it feels like it right for me now. I looked back on my past shots and yes it's as you say. I'm not taking shots that aren't interesting in themselves but to learn how to get the light and shade I want. Excellent video. Thanks

Good video Roman, very good tips. I did have to watch the video twice, once to look at the streets of London (very interesting) and once more to pay attention to what you were saying, but it’s not your fault, I have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time. Stay safe.

Hi. I enjoyed the walkabout but it would have been better (IMO) to have had an example, or two. When you were taking about silhouette, I felt that it cried out for an image of one. Besides that, keep it up Roman. (Appreciate that this video isn't your latest)

  • @krzysztofnazar

The clip from a walk was great. Btw, I left a few likes under your videos, but I decided it’s the time to appreciate your work more explicitly :) thanks, your channel is really refreshing (however, I found it during binge watching session of gear reviews when I was making a buying decision). Content like yours reminds people that tools are just tools. Seems like I forgot it for a while as well and focused on pixel-peeping on sample pictures in camera and lens reviews. Cheers

Hi Roman. Interesting video. Made me think about my street photography journey over the past years. True about the amount of shots versus the keeper ratio, something I’ve noticed is how I take way less than I used to and was feeling disappointed with the number, but actually, thinking about it, my keeper ratio is much higher.

I don't know that I agree with your idea that "as you get better, you stop taking the same style of photo". There is a japanese photographer, Hiroshi Sugimoto who has taken nothing but photos of horizon lines (where the sky meets the sea) since 1980. His work is absolutely prized for its simplicity and it's his style. He's perfected the exact style he wants and hasn't deviated. Silhouettes, could be the same.

    tl;dw
    1. Comparing your current work to past work.
    2. Overall number of images you take will decrease; quality of keepers will increase.
    3. Stop chasing the same shots. You chase the difficult shot.
    4. You home into your style and gear.
    5. You do not get offended, if someone does not like your style/work and you are not changing your mind about your work because x people said...
