that’s one thing about the Fuji system; it is quick and easy to change between regular half-press to focus and back-button focus; you have your back-button always set, and if you want to disable half-press focusing, you simply switch to Manual focusing on the front. Instant back-button focusing.

I’ve been rocking aperture priority with Fuji’s auto iso set to max 3200 with a minimum shutter speed of 1/250, it’s been great to get out and not spend as much time messing with setting but I’m also glad I started learning manual to get a better understanding of the camera, thanks for all your videos dude !

Another great video Roman. Clear and concise as usual. For me, I nearly always shoot in manual and with auto ISO. That gives me choices with the aperture and the shutter speed depending on the situation and the type of image I want to create. I then keep an eye on the exposure meter and adjust either the aperture or shutter speed if the camera is struggling with the lighting conditions. But at the end of the day it's horses for courses.

Man, you know what you're talking about! Subtle enthousiasm here, I like it. I'm pretty technical myself, only not yet on this subject. That's why for me the speed in which you're bringing things is a bit to high for me to keep track/focus. Since I do like what you're doing I'm going to save it for later. I believe that for me it's best to just go out and just start shooting, to get to know this beautiful piece of equipment on my own first. In a few months I'll be coming back here for your tips. Thanks! Keep it up!

Try back button focusing with the camera in manual focus mode. It's similar to shooting in S but you get focus peaking. I've disabled focus from the shutter and it's by far my favorite way to shoot.

I like your approach to street settings Roman. I agree in fixing the ISO at 400-500 as this does give most conditions the bets chance of being in focus with high enough SS and/or DOF. I always trust my manual setting fully using the histogram. Cant rely on the camera to do what I want it to do sadly so never use auto A, SS or ISO even though auto ISO is tempting and then use comp dial to adjust it. Thanks for the video Roman.

Not only is running a higher iso a good idea to gain some headroom when needed…but it’s worth playing with the DR settings as well. Shooting at DR400 can save some shots and also you can dial back to DR100 in camera/post, I believe. The whole point of it is to save your highlights while boosting shadows so it’s a way to create some headroom while otherwise trying to properly expose!

As street photographers, I think we all struggle for a good while initially with our camera's myriad configurations, always with an eye to being as fast and fluid as possible on the street. As a street photographer who cut his teeth in the analog era, even before in-camera metering was common, this has been especially challenging for me with the newer digital cameras, since previously there were not many choices to be made. One important choice, however, had to do with film ASA. Kodak Tri-X , Ilford HP4/5 and other faster (grainier) films were taken for granted by street photographers; they were essential and grain was a fact of life (which, ironically, many today endeavor to imitate with 'gritty' simulations, even though they will insist in always choosing the lowest ISO possible while shooting). Nobody back in the day would've dreamed of roaming the streets with something like Panatomic-X (ASA 32) or even Plus-X (ASA 100) just in order to achieve finer grain; they would never have achieved decent images in other respects. Yet that's precisely what many today seem to be suggesting. Bear in mind that so-called ISO today has little or nothing to do with ISO/ASA of yesteryear. Digital ISO is added gain, not additional sensor sensitivity; there is a difference. With respect to gain, then, Roman mentions using ISO 500 as a starting point for street shooting and that's a very good idea (good luck otherwise, with respect to acceptable focus and freeze on the street). A better one, however, insofar as Fuji cameras are involved, might perhaps be 640, since Fuji uses a two-step process to bump signal-to-noise. But the second processor only kicks in at 640. That means, for those overly concerned with 'noise', you may actually get less of it and achieve even more latitude at 640 than at 500. I'm no pixel-peeper and will leave it to others to confirm or investigate this further for themselves. Just thought I'd throw it in here, since not too many Fuji shooters seem to be aware of it. Ditto for many other camera brands, although specific numbers may vary.

And the pictures you take are a completely different league, congrats. QUICK QUESTION, I know you focus of photography, but any idea how to set the automatic metering for video? cannot find it anywhere, and it seems it is just set to spot metering... which as you mentioned in the video it is not ideal, I wish i could have it set to multi for video as well, any help would be much appreciated!

Quick comment and this you may already know, but to save one of your fn buttons for another feature try this. If you put your camera into focus mode ALL you then have access to all focus modes quickly. Just press joy stick then turn rear command dial to adjust focus box size. As this reduces size it automatically changes to the appropriate focus mode(I.e. starting from all will go to wide, zone and then single point automatically). Hope this is helpful to you and your viewers.

I have never been able to shoot in any priority modes. I find it much quicker, easier and more intuitive to shoot in manual. But then again, I usually do loops of one place for a while, with the light not changing too much. When shooting in harsh light I typically just use the shutter speed to drastically change the exposure, to get deep shadows. But great video, always interesting to hear how everyone shoots. I guess the most important thing is the end result, regardless of how we get there.

By the way, I think you didn't mention what lens you use for street photography, it may also be useful. I'm quite new in street photography, I do mostly portraits, but I tried a 50mm (on a full frame camera) and it seemed fine, however, a 35mm may be even better (at least in some scenarios).

If I could subscribe again I would, clever Roman. Does the X-T4 have dual-stage manual focus assistance like my current cameras which allow focus on a movable focus area at 6x and 12x magnification. That feature was enlightening and game-changing for exploiting a 42mp sensor when I learned about it and I may be reluctant to change to a different camera system that does not have that feature. A good video as I love street photography Not sure what you meant by leaving the film simulations on and shooting raw Can you explain that as I love B&W as well

You mentioned that you prefer ISO 500 for the X-T4. Have you considered ISO 800 as a standard because of the dual sensor gain circuitry on the camera? I find that it's actually cleaner than 500/640 in most situations.

Roman, manual zone focus is so much better tbh and you will actually enjoy shooting a lot and hit rate is very high.

Great advice, thank you. May I ask, for street work, do you find the 35 lens a little tight? Have you tried the 23?

sometimes yeah especially if I am with people but I use both equally to be honest. I pre-ordered the new 27 2.8 but canned it last minute as id rather use it first before spending the cash. That could be a nice in-between tho

      @@snapsbyfox I see. I have the 35 1.4 - a phenomenal lens. I’ll check out the new 27, thanks. A nice focal length, yes.

Any chances that you can explain how to set the dials to use the Front/real dials for changing iso/exp comp etc? Like do they have to be all in C?

    • @REMY.C.

If you want to be able to use the dials you have to set your system as you wish.
Here's how it works on my XPRO3 (I don't have my XT2 so you'll have to adjust) with the 23mm 1.4 that has -IMPORTANT DETAIL FOR LATER- an aperture ring.
First thing is to assign the function FRONT DIAL SWITCH to the button of your liking in the settings.
If you long press this button you'll go to the dials setup.
For the rear and front dial you can attribute one or more of these functions:
      - S.S (shutter speed) or Program Shift (not gonna talk about this one here)
      - ISO
      - Exposure compensation. This function WILL NOT WORK if you are in full manual for aperture, ISO, S.S because well you're in manual so you compensate manually.
      - Aperture. This dial's function will work only if you have a lens without aperture ring.
      - None.
Now, to be able to use those dials in full manual you have to :
      - set ISO to C
      - set SHUTTER SPEED to T
      - set EXP COMP to C
Considering you have a lens that has no aperture ring, you'll be able to change the aperture, the shutter speed and the iso with the dials. Look at your screen or OVF/EVF and just push the front or rear COMMAND DIAL SWITCH until the desired function is highlighted blue with a blue half disc representing front or rear dial. That's it.
If you change any of the iso or ss to anything else than C or T you'll go into semi auto mode, that means that now one of your front or rear dial can switch to exposure compensation function.
Considering you have a lens with an aperture ring set on A, you won't be able to change the aperture via front or rear dial, apparently the camera is not able to change it electronically, or the lens is not engineered to.
Hope I covered everything. And DO NOT hesitate to experiment when sitting on your desk so you get how this works.

@@REMY.C. Thanks for this vital info as I am defo beginner and have watched RF earlier video on setting up his pref when he first got the XT4 and I have a lot now to learn as I was some years ago a basic Canon user and Cameras have done a quantum leap. I dont want to walk around taking photos on AAA and am getting my head around best set up for Manual and or Aperture Priority.
Your little note saved me a lot of research on the issue of a front command dial not doing anything after holding the dial in for 2 secs etc. Flummoxed me until I got this nice clear explanation.

@@nigelblanchard5571 You're welcome. Glad it helped.
My way of understanding cameras as their complexity grew over time (this technique is the same I use when managing computer/web projects):
I start an organized note on my phone or computer.
I write in a very detailed way what are the problems I stumbled upon and classify them into sections. For example Focus section, quality, video, metering, things to remember.
I also read the manual to find the solution and capture pages to paste them just under the problem with a detailed writing on how to solve.
It helps a lot since I don't use 100% of the camera 100% of the time so I can get back to this note and refresh my memory or update a section.
