The day I knew that camera didn't really matter was when I saw a friend of mine use a Canon 700d and another 5d mkiii, I saw their works and I tell you, the 700d guy's work will beat any Professional out there, and the 5d mkiii guy's work looks like someone who's just into point and shoot, it was then I decided to stick with my 60d and work more on light, work more on my retouching, worked more on my composition and posture and I'm glad I'm achieving results... So, I conclude, stop paying too much attention on cameras, develop rather your skills as a photographer... And you'll be glad you did... Thanks for your analysis prof
I partially agree. Using a canon 1200d I've beem able to get some good shots, however, about 35% of my shots are out of focus and it kills me everytime I have to Chuck that one perfect photo because the detail simply isn't there. My eyesight is rubbish, the autofocusing is give or take, photos are generally noisy and I feel it's time to upgrade to a sony a7 ii. Not an expensive camera, but my god will it make photo taking so much better. That's what I have to say really. Gear DOES MATTER but not past the many thousands people pay for gear.
@@Potatoverynice if you can get the a7III instead, just for the quality of life upgrades alone I feel its a worth investment if you can find it for a good price used. The autofocus is also better from my personal experience (have the A7II, tried a friend's A7III). Kinda wish the A7IV comes out so that the A7III drops in price on the used market 😂
@@MrSyngamer haha well i've really considered the a7 iii but its over double the price of the a7 ii.. I would rather invest in a better lens, also I'm gonna be going to uni soon and so money will be tight haha.. like I don't mind carrying extra batteries, and I will be manual focusing anyways (I'm getting a super ultrawide 9mm lens and also a vintage 135mm lens, the 135 to offset the price even more) so I will be using focus peaking. ALso, I've heard it is a slow camera but I don't need it to be all that fast, I'm not a sports photographer lol
@@Potatoverynice yeah I feel you brotha the pain of knowing you have to forgo the better option purely due to financial circumstances 😂 but tbh its not that slow, I've enjoyed using the manual + autofocus, only thing is that I wished the eye autofocus came on the A7II, it's a damn godsend especially when shooting on the street or for portraits haha. Enjoy the camera when you get it! I'd like to believe it helped me with everything else while I worked on composition and lighting, improving my photography as a whole
If this is playing in 360p for you, I apologise. TH-cam has been "processing HD version" for like 2 hours now.... hopefully they sort their sh*t out soon and you get the HD version. Update - It could be the fact that the Fenton clip was 360p originally and it is having a mission upscaling it..... Update 2 - Still processing..... I am already getting roasted in the comments.... just pretend it’s 2009 again till it sorts itself out lol Update 3 - This is a sick trick for days when i have a spot on my face from eating too much cake.... upload in 360p and blame TH-cam for it. F*cking genius Update 4 (2 hours later) - Resolved!!
@Dakota Duecy im not even a good photographer ,and i got trapped in the youtube algorithm.Ive watched so many youtubers selling me shit , I believed it. now im starting to hate when they say" This is not a sponsored video, they did send me a product for free, but they dont want anything in return". Last time i checked companies dont give free shit from the bottom of their hearts.
A boring photo is still boring no matter the camera. How true!!! This video and the other one about the importance of gear are my favourites of yours. And both came in a time when I am thinking of upgrading and I have to tell you, you are not making my decision any easier! But because of the covid situation and the fact that I am an amateur and not a pro, I'm being patient for now! Thank you so much!
i knew and told myself that upgrading to any of the full frame options is just too expensive - but damn did that price comparison really blew me away. great video and tips.
I needed a telephoto lens for a concert before. I ended up buying a $20 pentax 70-200 lens and adapted it to my Fujifilm. I love that lens. I don't use it often but it's cheap.
I was given a couple of Pentax SLRs and 4 lenses, one the 70-200 but an Tamron push and pull one, bought the adapter and tried my smaller lenses and they look great, just a different look
The workaround is the „saving money on PayPal option“ by selling old gear (and everything else you find around the house) on ebay. Deos this sound familiar to anybody?: „What did UPS bring?“ „A new camera lense ...“ „WHAT? AGAIN?“ „I traded in old gear, didn`t spend and money ...“ „Ahhmm.“ „ .... as I promised.“ [Wife walking off, mumbling something to herself]
Solid solid advice here. I'm not a PRO photographer, just a hobbyist, so I think my X-T4 with the 18-55 will serve me well for years to come. After all, better photographers with gear not half as good as mine made history in the photographic world, so I do think what I have is overkill as is.
You are one of the content creators that inspired me to get a Fuji and to learn photography over a month ago. I was scared you were leaving the Fuji gang already haha! Keep up the great content :D
Thanks Roman, you just saved me £18,000 !! I was getting too focused on getting an R5 and the same lenses types I have for my X-T4. But if I’m honest, the autofocus and bokeh is fine on my X-T4 and primes. The actual issue may, possibly, just be me.......
Thanks, Roman. I really like your video and the way you sharing. Actually, I just upgraded my gear from Olympus OM10 II to Fujifilm X-T30 and 35f2. Before that, I compared the Fujifilm system with Sony and Canon's APSC system. I reviewed many youtube videos and found your video about FujiFilm camera really helped me make the decision. Enjoy the time with Fujifilm camera and Take nice photos! By the way, I am a college student in the UK, cost is a key factor for me. Cheers.
@@wearetheunknown8162 it helps me grow a lot in photography since I switched too, I thought it would be a hustle when i first try it, but then i just got used to shooting with it, and my composition and shot selection became much nicer
I upgraded from my old Canon 40D which largely just sat in my camera bag, for a Fuji X-E3. I've used far far more in the last couple of years than I did with my Canon in the last 10 years, largely because i liked the size, weight and feel and the old school, film-like handling.
I'm a Fuji user since 2016 because someone stole my Canon gear during a very long and stressed journey to the other side of the world so, very sadly I've bought an old Fuji X-T1 and it's my main camera for taking pictures, sometimes video too, then a little X-E3 mainly for video and because it's very compact and very good...not very fast but for the price it's perfect. Then I've started a youtube channel and I wanted a good filming gear, Sony apsc cameras are good enough, but I did like you putting on a scale almost the same reasons. I'm still a Fuji user and it's worthed. Thanks mate.
Every time I think of upgrading my XT2 to something different I just pick it up and make a few photos. Then I ask myself if the fancy new full frame or even MF camera and system will really improve my photos? The answer has always been no so far. I am considering a X100V just for the portability of it for casual use.
Great breakdown, always good to reiterate these practical points rather than just going out on an impulse 🙌🏻. One thing: 5% of photos taken in lower light conditions might be in part due to the fact that they wouldn’t have come out too good, so, had you had a camera with a better sensor, it might have inspired you to take more low light shots.
cheers! oh no no, when it is night time I would rather be in a pub with my mates or slumped on the sofa with a movie and a tub of ice cream. Night time photography just does not interest me at all tbh and doesn't work for me in terms of my energy and focus levels etc
Great tips for not wasting a shit ton of money on gear you don't NEED, rather than just want. I personally struggle a lot with this since I'm a compulsive buyer. Had everything under control the past couple months, but there's always that piece of gear or whatever that looks at you in the eye and tells you to buy it. Anyway, I love the honesty and straightforwardness of all your videos, keep up the good work mate! Love from Mexico
Great Video. I’m before a full system change and it’s going to be expensive. Been waiting for a year now for the A7IV because it’s going to be a lot cheaper than the R6 with the rf lenses. But I’m tired of the waiting game my old one is really keeping me from going out. Will take your steps into account.
Good video. Fentonnnn! When I started with Fuji I got the X-T30 and primes as a great combo of weight and sharpness. But I'm so glad I'm currently hoofing around an X-T4 and f2.8 16-55mm instead. It's removed most of the ostacles to me composing pictures quickly and I'm loving it. It's also got me out of the bad habit of using f1.2-f2.0 as a crutch, making everything too portraity. Imagine I might slide back to primes as I develop.
I upgraded from a Sony RX100 II and bought the X-T2 when they came out, I have now part ex’d it for the X-T4 for the battery life, IBIS and the diopter lock. I still love using my Olympus OM-2 and my Rolliecord.
Great points mate. Practical, personal and very useful. The pros and cons buying decision checklist is gold. I’d just like to add that something that’s brought me tremendous value and levelled up my photography and filmmaking more than a new camera ever has is going on a photo tour or workshop with a reputable career creator that I greatly respect. Perfect pairing of education, beautiful location and a chance to connect with like minded people who you can then visit in their country for years to come.
Thanks Roman. Very good advice, even to an amateur like me. I've just got an EM-5 mk2, and I'm always tempted to get a mark 3, but for all the benefits, I can't really justify changing. The weight , is an important reason not to upgrade alone. You made that point very well, especially to me in my 70's. I totally enjoy your channel my friend, keep it up.
Great post, useful logical advice. I changed from a Nikon D700 to the Fuji xt-3, purely because of size and weight having analysed the pros and cons as you did. It really does work and haven’t regretted changing. Thanks Barry
Wise advice right there! I’m still doing quite alright with my old x-t3 and a few primes, and for the price of a r5 I set up a full studio with 5 lights (4 speedlight + 1 led) loads of modifiers and what not. Now I gotta confess the gfx100s makes my bed wet every now and then. Cheers
Love the ergonomics point - was really keen on Fuji to replace my old a6000 but in the camera shop holding the Fuji xt-3 and the Panasonic g9, the feel of the g9 in the hand won the day.
Great advice. I've been having a bit of upgrade-itis myself lately. It helped setting up a spreadsheet of the actual cost of switching systems with not only body and lenses but all the other accessories. Then I thought about all the people who take better pictures with the exact same gear as me. Turns out the money is much better spent upgrading my skills instead.
I upgraded from a fuji xa3 to Fuji xt20. Shooting with an EVF changed the way I shoot photos. I love the ergonomics of the XT20 compared to the XA3... plus the shutter speed dial is a whole new world. The definitive Fuji shooting experience
Good stuff, it's pretty simple do I really need it. If I had the time and money sure, as I don't my sony a6000 will do and as you first pointed out rent a lens, see if its not really the camera more how you compose and a rental lens my give what you need, a good lens can make the beholder the eye.
This was brilliant because so much of the You Tube videos are about getting people to lust over equipment. I liked the detailed step by step approach to decide with head ( or purse ) rather than heart.
You’re absolutely spot on here. I could have invested in an expensive full frame rig the last time I had the itch, but I quickly realized for the money I would have spent (I was considering Leica), much like your Canon example, I could buy a Fujifilm X100V, the 3L Peak sling, the Peak tripod, a few memory cards, a Capture clip, a DJI drone, an action cam for POV, AND a gimbal for my iPhone and still have money left over. So, that’s what I did. I still have my X-T3 (with a X-T30 for backup) and all of my Fuji glass. No, the X100V isn’t a Leica Q2. No one looking at my photographs will be able to tell the difference. :) You’re doing an outstanding job of bringing a very practical view of photography and gear to TH-cam. Keep up the good work.
Much appreciated Ken! Yeah you have a solid set up for all sorts of photos there. I think we also get an extra itch to upgrade because we are not travelling or going places due to lockdown. I'm sure once you head out again, your current set up will yield you far better results and shooting experience....thus you will not lust after other stuff. I would probably sell the XT-30 tho... X100v is a great backup in itself
Thanks in a round about way that helped me out, I have full frame already but slowly building a smaller kit with Fujifilm cameras and lenses, I like the weather sealing on them and good quality pictures they produce for the prise, I'm buying second hand so getting some excellent deals . Maybe get an X-T2 or X-T3 I'm not really into video at all just stills, Well thank you again Roman I wish you all the best.......
fun fact : as much as this video can restrain you from spending your money when you don't have to, it also helps when you want to buy something that you actually need but are too conservative of your own money to buy. I'll tanke my own example : I'm a proud owner of a Canon M50 that I use for pretty much everyting : landscapes, street photo, video etc. Me and my family have a strong history with Nikon and therefore I have a lot of Nikon lenses at home, some early digital era ones (around 10 to 15 years old at this point) and some vintage stuff from the 80's, more than 40yo at this point (I generally use 2 primes and 2 zooms from y Nikon lineup). I love using those lenses, and for most of what I do, I mostly use manual focus rather than autofocus. Bought a little adapter for the M50 and I can throw all those lenses on that body. I also have 2 lenses that came with the M50 when I bought it, the 15-45 kit lens and the 55-200 telephoto. That was for the context. The M50 is a great camera, don't get me wrong, but the lack of controls and options is kinda annoying for a "not-beginner-anymore" user like me. Also, the files it creats are rather big, especially the raw files, which once converted to be used with my editing software, are upwards of 35 to 40MB, which is huge for images coming out a "only" 24Mpx sensor. The Fuji ecosystem, with the film simulations (that could replace all the edits I do with the raw files for my Canon), the controls, the rugged metal bodies... all of that was about the experience and that's what I was interested in. But deep down, I had that little voice screaming "you already have a nice camera body bro, you don't need that Fuji one". I needed to to a little list like you've done to convice me that taking a Fuji body was a good decision. I paid around 250€ for a Fuji X-T1 in quite nice condition with an extra battery, another 35€ for an adapter ring for my Nikon glass, and I'm basicallly as happy as I can be with my photo setup. Coming from a dude having the same Samsung J7 since 2016 because "yeah it's still working I don't need to change it"
Well put arguments, I'm getting back into photography I currently own a Canon Apsc and am looking to get another body for full frame so that I can utilise my current lenses. I'm leaning towards nature photography which requires an additional zoom lens which would go well with the APSC camera for the extra reach. The full frame camera I would like t get in order to do landscapes as my wide lens is not as wide with the 1.6 crop taken into account. A much wider lens would cost as much a new body.
This is a very timely and useful video. I have been getting the itch to upgrade, this gives me a systematic way to make that decision. I appreciate the information.
I Just upgraded from my old Nikon D5100 (used for 8 years) to a Fuji XS10. I was planning to get the XT4 but with the price, I thought I'm not that pro to need one. My reasoning for the upgrade is obviously my old camera is ancient, and I'm looking to shoot more slomo shots and not depend on processing 24fps videos to twixtor, as it adds processing power to do so. Also, with the upgrade I'm trying to get in to color grading and with just my D5100 it wouldn't cut it with the video quality it outputs compare to latest mirrorless like Fuji.
I’m looking at selling my Panasonic kit to buy the XT-4 with the 16-55mm Lens, for the amount of work I do and quality it offers I think it’s a must. love the look and feel of the camera too. Just having a nice camera would make me want to go out and shoot way more
Still rocking my XT-1 as a all around camera for photo walks, street photography. I only own 3 lenses. The XT-1 was an upgrade from an EM5-2, which was my only camera for a long time. I'm slowly changing over to a RX-100 as my all around camera, as the size is completely tiny. It is pocket sized, dont even need a bag. The only thing I look at when I think of upgrading is "whats the price?" and I usually stop there. And I do nightscape photos very frequently, I bet theres a dozen cameras that would better for that.
Great and important video if you haven't endless budget. Everyone should watch it before upgrading, because you are right. Most likely it won't just stop with a Body replacement... And everyone need to decide for himself if it would really make the photos much better...
Some good points, it‘s easy to fall into the rabbit hole of buying new gear to improve your photos. However, I recently upgraded my gear for image quality alone. I do a lot of landscape photography and sometimes you find yourself in conditions that are one in a lifetime events. I have some images taken with entry level gear that are unique and not recreateable but just lack in image quality. I really wished I had a better kit back then. I spend quite some money on my new gear. Will that make my images look better? No. But it will ensure that in those rare occasions, when you really capture something special the image quality will hold up to my expectations and that‘s worth it for me. However I slimmed down my kit quite a bit during the switch and focused just on the essentials. I‘m not gonna buy similar lenses anymore that have only small advantages over each other. Because that‘s an easy trap I fell into by convincing myself those minor differences will actually show or improve something, which they don‘t.
Thanks for making sense. I have settled with what I have for now. I am some would say downgrading my equipment. But for myself I have found what I really need. It took a few cameras to find myself but I am happy with what I have. I got rid of my gas. For me there will never be the perfect camera. Now I can focus more on my photography.
More people should watch this. This is how I do things. Recently "switched" for video from Nikon to Sony. I bought a Nikon D5000 when I started out with photography. Got some lenses with it. All fun. Then I thought "you know what... I want to do some video...". So because all my lenses where Nikon and my budget was tight I went for the D7100. Which is not a bad camera. And it shoots solid 1080p.... 30fps... with the most horrible auto-focus ever... so that was a bit of a hit and miss. So I pulled the trigger on the A7ii as it is now within budget (sadly none on the second hand market... so had to go new). A7ii + 28-70 and a 50mm 1.8 for 1100 eu was still more than I wanted to spend... but the video and auto-focus are heaps better. Low light is heaps better. I now actually shoot video instead of dredding it. So ultimately worth it even though I miss some of my Nikon glass xD
That chart you've made for upgrading. That's genius. I'd do something of a mental chart like that, very basic, but most times I'd still indulge in purchasing. But I like the thing about going in depth to look at past work and as myself and that stuff. Surely something to consider.
I'm slowly upgrading my Nikon equipment with 24-70mmF2.8 E VR and 70-200mmF2.8 E VR Zooms for handhold use and I have a old AF 300mmF2.8 that I will upgrade to a 400mm with VR I use D700 and D800E today but I hope to upgrade to a D850 or Z8 if I can afford it.
Sound judgement! I can relate to your analysis for sure.I haven't used my 4 x Nikon FF bodies in over 2 years since converting to Fujifilm. I do have 10 bodies and 18 lenses in the Fujifilm range, from the X-T20 to a couple of GFX50s's 4 x XT3's a couple of XT4's and the XH1...
Thanks man. I was in this type of struggle not long ago. I have the XT3, and wanted to buy the A7III for the low light capabilities (for weddings). But the XT3 is good enough for my work (I shot some weddings with a canon 600D before lol)
Been using a canon 700d for 7 years now and I've had this thought process for the past 3-4 years, honestly though I've just been too lazy to invest time and money into a new system 😂 fuji x-t3 still sounds pretty enticing though...
Great video! Just a friendly reminder to anyone looking to get a new camera: the latest specs don't matter as much as you think. Buy second hand! A 2018 3'000$ camera outperforms a 2021 1'500$ camera most of the time. Don't buy new cheaper cameras, you'll want to upgrade sooner.
TH-cam has shown me this as I’ve been searching info regarding changing from my canon 90d to a Fuji X-t4! I bought a used x-t30 as a walk around because the 90d is heavy and bulky and I love it. It makes me want to go out and take photos. The problem is I find it tricky switching between the two as I don’t get entirely familiar with either as I’m swapping between them depending on where I take photos so thought maybe trade the 90d for an x-t4. It’s hard to know if it’s a good or bad decision as it’s often personal preference as to what people prefer. The 90d is a great but fickle camera (crop sensor with loads of pixels squished in!!) so I don’t want to regret my choice 🤷🏻♀️🤔
Great video. I’m originally a full frame 5D Mk iii and I’ve Canon photographer but just before Christmas bought a XT4 and 16mm prime and loving travelling light and experimenting more with video! Can’t wait to be able to get away on a holiday with this great camera.
Great advice for first time buyers too. I spent waaaaay too long researching and can tell you a lot about the 2020 market before I ended up going for an X-T4. So glad I did! The main things that swung it for me were: value for money, handling experience, consistently amazing user reviews, customer service track record...and much more. Then I had to boil it down between the X-T4 and X-S10. It came down to weather resistance and video features. Your grid idea would have sped that process up a lot if I'd put all the suspects side by side!
I didn’t have to write anything out to know that my experience in the past has taught me the same thing. I used to own all kinds of different brands, thinking jumping to this other one would make my images better. I’ve talked to many photographers who like to collect and feel they must have this or that in order to get the images they want. In the end I have found that just keeping what I have, which is Fuji and keeping minimal lenses has gotten me the best photos I’ve ever gotten in the last four years! Basically you’re better off just concentrating on your subject and learning how to use the equipment you already have. Not to say I haven’t upgraded, I did go from a pro2 to an XT4, that was because the viewfinder broke on the pro2. The XT4 had just come out, and I was interested in knowing if it would focus faster, not to mention ibis. Sure I’ll look at other equipment from time to time, but now that I’m getting the best images I’ve ever gotten, at least consistently - I see no reason to change.
I am a nightmare for talking myself into buying equipment and gear. Thanks for sharing this process. Makes total sense. I love my Fuji but keep looking to move to Sony only for the full frame. But it’s the learning curve and the fact I love using my Fuji I haven’t moved and don’t think I will. I left canon because of the size. Thanks for the video 👍🏻
Just wondering about your decisions about weather sealing and low light performance. You say you counted the photos you made in the past but didn’t you make so little photos in the rain because the weather sealing of fuji isn’t all that?
Good advice! I love my X-T4, haven't looked back since switching from the A7 III. Getting my hands on the GFX 100s for a few days this week though, I'm praying I don't fall in love with it, definitely don't have the deep pockets to afford one ha!
Well, Craig... prepare yourself... just heard a photographer (Fujilove podcast, episode 79, Derek Fahsbender ) describe it as an experience in frustration when going back to his X-T4 from the GFX... I wouldn’t dare even put my hands on the GFX without being ready to commit...
great video 👍 ( on the other hand i am about to upgrade to a Sony a7 camera since i have been shooting on a Nikon d300 for 14 years 😂 ) i definitely don't need that technique to decide that .
Loved this. I'm currently on the Fuji system and have been thinking about switching to Sony or Panasonic but ended up staying with Fuji after making one of these lists. Thank you
Your logic is fantastic! I am drawn by the hype sometimes but know that I am nowhere near being able to justify an upgrade as I'm still learning so me and my 2nd hand 6D will keep on going until I feel I've squeezed out all I can from it and can make constantly good images from it. Great video.
Excellent video, Roman. I am making the exact same analysis between the R5 and the X-T3. The cost of switching systems would be prohibitive but the R5’s animal AF would be a huge benefit based on what I’ve seen. Basically, my own list looks almost exactly like yours. I’ve decided to wait until Fuji’s next-gen bodies come out and see if the AF gap has closed. If not, the R5 should be cheaper by then and Canon’s RF line up should be more filled out.
For the price of the R5 you may as well spend a bit more and get the 100s. On a serious note I have stayed with XT3s for the moment as I hate the articulating mirror on the XT4, it's like have a door mirror on your camera. I swapped from Nikon after many years to Fuji and photography became fun again. They do what I want them to do, just great kit.
Hello. I enjoy your videos. - Can't quite upgrade just yet, but I currently have a Nikon D5600. It's my first DSLR. I've had it about a year and a half. While I do like it a lot, I am definitely looking to upgrade when I can. I'm really interested in the Nikon Z6 II -- with the IBIS and dual card slots and weather sealing, but some people do seem to be indicating a possible autofocus issue. I know it would be full frame, so it would be nice to have the better low-light handling; however, I'm also very interested in a Fuji XT-3. I'm really interested in street photography, and I'm a part-time freelance writer and photographer for a small newspaper and magazine. Do you have any thoughts about the Z6 II versus the XT-3? - I know the XT-4 is newer, but I feel like its screen that extends all the way to the side would be less desirable for street photography. Most of my work is portraits, but I am also interested in occasional wildlife (like ducks in the park/deer mostly) and product photography. Would like to do travel photography sometime if it's ever safe again, so I want weather sealing. Thanks for any input.
Your timing is so crazy because I was just looking into upgrading to full frame from my XT3. I would probably use the same method to make a decision between the 10-24 WR vs. 8-16 2.8. Another great video!
Wow - awesome video Ronan and I gave a subscribe. Even though I even bought a 3rd Fuji body recently (X-T3), I've long been hankering for full frame again (now that we have mirrorless in other brands and they are smaller than DSLR). I just kind of had this blob of hankering in my head, but I never sat down like you did and iron it all out. This was awesome! I was hankering over the the Nikon Z6. But like you said it is sooo much more expensive. I bought my new X-T3 the other day for only $1,300 (Australian dollars, not USD), but the body only for the Nikon is $3,500 here in Australia. My 16-55 was only $1.500 about 3 years ago. The equivalent 24-70 in the Nikon, for the 2.8 version, is $3,800 here. So the Nikon body alone with one lens is way over 7K. All of that extra expensive for a tiny bit of benefit going to full frame. I even looked at videos comparing the difference between Fuji X sensor and full frame and when it's all boiled down - not really a huge difference. Once again - awesome video my man!
Just a thought but are less people buying cameras now - one youtuber recently said if the budget is around a certain amount why not buy a decent phone instead ? My Samsung A71 was around £370 and gets some cracking results - and i've always got it with me.I own several cameras now some with limited usage and built in obsolescence is the norm now ( phones included ) - the Sony RX 100 - i have mkiii - is now up to mkvii and i think mkviii is sitting in the wings.By the time you've finished watching the unboxing video and upgraded to the latest firmware ( the whatever ) it's already ' Old fashioned ' ! Very nice objective reasoning Roman which highlights the difference between WANT and NEED. Must admit the transition from Nikon D7100 and various lenses to the XT-4 has felt like the right thing to do but you're spot on with - " A fool and his/her money are soon parted ". I've got nearly 1 billion £'s in my save it for later so perhaps it could take an edit ?
Very good analysis. I had the great joy of running a s/h camera store for a few years which gave me the joy of handling a great variety of bodies lenses and formats. Linked with my earlier experience in film using everything from 35 mm compacts to 5” x 7” format I know that if I had a ‘full frame’ (stupid name) system now It would sit in my bag while I picked up my X100v and took hundreds of great pictures. If I went into professional work now and I mean corporate work I would purchase a gfx system. Anything in between would be a marginal improvement over a cropped sensor system and would not increase the value of your work. You made so much sense in your video and it is great to watch someone who isn’t deceived by the foul advertisers making you dissatisfied with what you currently use. I use the XT4 & the X100v and as a second interchangeable lens body my favourite camera of all time the XT1 it is brilliant.
Thank you! Ive been going mad wanting to get a Sony a7 + 85mm lens. My Xt1 has been doing a great job and realistically would regret not using the money more wisely.
I like your honest approach, this is the 3rd of your clips I watched (starting w/ the Light & Composition clips), I'll bingewatch the rest. Your list seems very usefull, I will come back to it if I plan to upgrade, but I live a more modest life AND I ❤️ my X-T1 & X-E1, so it could take some time. The comedy-moment is the comparsion between the X-T4 & the R5, your recital of what else you could buy with the money includig the travel compared to ---: the pure canon-body w/out a friggin lens :D I laughed so hard, perfect timing!
Another really helpful and sensible video, it is so easy to get carried away with wanting gear you just don’t necessarily need. I start getting thoughts like “well if i just spend £500 more i could get the next model up” but that’s the best part of a whole new lens which would be a much better investment. Thanks 🙏
Cheers Tom! yeah totally man. I get the same with cars..... oh that £3000 big brake kit will deffo make all the difference (only on a track and not on the M25 lol)
@@snapsbyfox I really love Fuji Cameras but i just cannot get on with the grip and shutter button position on the X-T line. Having only owned Canon DSLR’s I’m used to those ergonomics but the X-S10 was ok, i was hoping for an X-H2... Failing that a 2nd hand EOS R is on the cards.
Great video and interesting to hear your thoughts on it. I would say the lens selection is another huge part of switching systems as well. You might have made your choice easier by just listing everything you have now. Do you really need all the lenses in a new system, with the same aperture values? For example I almost never use a zoom for low light or shallow depth of field, rather go all the way with a prime there and have a slow zoom. Also with more resolution and sharper lenses you might be fine with a prime instead of a zoom or 2 primes close together. Canon RF is a pretty new system though, still lacking many lower cost options, so if you need the focal lengths there is not much you can do currently. I personally never fell in love with my X-T3 ergonomics (and lack of IBIS), X-S10 would be fine but then got a great deal on a Sony A7C and some lenses. FE 20/1.8 and FE 35/1.8 are great lenses with very good closeup performance, which was a big flaw of the Fuji 23/2 as I really like the closeup wide look. Sigma 65/2 will probably replace my previous Fuji 35/2 and 50/2. Tamron 70-180 lacks 20mm but is actually smaller and lighter than the Fuji 50-140.
This is the same process that I do when I am thinking to upgrade...at the moment I am more than happy with my X100V, but I am considering to buy a second hand Leica with a lens to have another kind of shooting experience, so in a way it is not an upgrade, since the camera is 8/9 years old, just another way to think photography...by the way I think that Fuji is the best compromise on the market right now. Every time I think to jump from the fuji-ship, I look around and I stay put.
I discovered the same about 20 years ago when a local grandmother did an art exhibit with amazing shots...taken with...a Canon AE1 and a 50mm.
I am already getting roasted in the comments.... just pretend it’s 2009 again till it sorts itself out lol
Update 3 - This is a sick trick for days when i have a spot on my face from eating too much cake.... upload in 360p and blame TH-cam for it. F*cking genius
Update 4 (2 hours later) - Resolved!!
It doesn’t look 360p. It looks more like 720p :)

I personally just wait for new tech to come out so I can buy the old stuff when everyone else upgrades. So far it works flawless
Same. I bought the A6000 in 2021 crazy cheap.
A7 IV, see you in 5 years.
Same. Just got the Xt2 when everyone else upgrades to xt4. Well, old camera was once a new great camera too..
For married men, the process is simpler. Just ask your wife.😀
Unlucky it is so true :D
The workaround is the „saving money on PayPal option“ by selling old gear (and everything else you find around the house) on ebay.
Deos this sound familiar to anybody?:
„What did UPS bring?“
„A new camera lense ...“
„WHAT? AGAIN?“
„I traded in old gear, didn`t spend and money ...“
„Ahhmm.“
„ .... as I promised.“
[Wife walking off, mumbling something to herself]
haha yeah I don't need to get any permission for now
With you on that,
that is very true hahahaha
Solid solid advice here. I'm not a PRO photographer, just a hobbyist, so I think my X-T4 with the 18-55 will serve me well for years to come. After all, better photographers with gear not half as good as mine made history in the photographic world, so I do think what I have is overkill as is.
You are one of the content creators that inspired me to get a Fuji and to learn photography over a month ago. I was scared you were leaving the Fuji gang already haha! Keep up the great content :D
My biggest reason to upgrade my camera body was focus points. Upgraded from 11 to 273 and never had an out of focus shot since then.
Thanks Roman, you just saved me £18,000 !! I was getting too focused on getting an R5 and the same lenses types I have for my X-T4. But if I’m honest, the autofocus and bokeh is fine on my X-T4 and primes. The actual issue may, possibly, just be me.......
its all fun and games till you add the cost up hahah
@@snapsbyfox mirrorless system is expensive, photography gear is getting expensive as it was before
2:55 I have a Canon 5DIII which is quiet big but want a 1DX which weights about 1.4kg because of ergonomics and slightly better autofocusing😁
I want to sell my 1DX, a great piece of camera.
But I am going mirrorless...
Cheers.
Sold everything and bought a Leica M10, totally worth it 😀
Lol! I just made the decision to wait and budget appropriately for the next 3 years. I need all of the gear I curated recently.
Haha! I made the same decision. I sold everything and bought a Leica SL2-s. Always wanted a Leica from the beginning.
Leica drags you in, I thought it was hype until I bought one. It’s definitely on its own level in image quality and great to use.
@@wearetheunknown8162 I agree, I can create the same photos with other brands, but I really like the shooting experience with a Leica.

More photographers should watch your channel alongside James Popsys and Andy Mumford's.
Down to earth, honest and solid advice. Much appreciated!
Good video.
XT4 with 16-55mm f2.8, the only combo most people need.
Thanks for telling. Now I need to upgrade 😹
I upgrade my camera every time Fujifilm releases a new firmware.
Good stuff, it's pretty simple do I really need it. If I had the time and money sure, as I don't my sony a6000 will do and as you first pointed out rent a lens, see if its not really the camera more how you compose and a rental lens my give what you need, a good lens can make the beholder the eye.
Brilliant Roman, love the logic of all this, thanks for posting....gave me lots of food for thought!
You’re doing an outstanding job of bringing a very practical view of photography and gear to TH-cam.
Upgraded to R6 from Fuji X-T1 which I bought in 2014
These videos of yours are inspirational signposts for many a photographer-myself included. Well done, man.
This is a very timely and useful video. I have been getting the itch to upgrade, this gives me a systematic way to make that decision. I appreciate the information.
What a great video! The best camera is the one in your hand while the scene is unfolding.
I Just upgraded from my old
Nikon D5100 (used for 8 years) to a Fuji XS10.
Hope to see you around if I go for a photowalk around london!
Thanks very much, you're advise was filled with great wisdom. The great battle of heart versus brain will never cease.
Been using my canon 7d for 10 years with out any problems until last year then upgraded to leica q2 and m9 😁
Your words are gold .
Good point! cheers
I just use a D70 and a kit so I can truly start from beginning. Then when I upgrade its significant and its justified
I started on a D70! Such a great camera for its age. Try and get some lenses for it if you can, it’ll change everything
I'm still rocking a D90 I bought in 2010 LoL
I'm on the fence on whether to get a D700 or a Fuji XH1.
I'm still using the X-T1
I am using a canon eos 30d
Same. Waiting for xh2
@@wilburtmoreno469 Me probably too. I don’t do video and the xt1 still produces great pictures.
Getting my hands on the GFX 100s for a few days this week though, I'm praying I don't fall in love with it, definitely don't have the deep pockets to afford one ha!
haha oh dear.... slippery slope lad!
Let us know what you think Craig!
When you see your recent printed photographs in the gallery, what was the point of upgrading? Your printed pictures look amazing in the Fuji gallery
Thanks for always good content I learn alot. Will do the list right now =) Cheers from Sweden
I have a canon rebel T7 and I love it. I just upgraded to a eos m50 canon for vlogging. Was that a good upgrade or no?
Helped me a lot...saved big bucks. Thx
Freeze at 10:21.
Why are you paying twice as much for the Fuji camera body? Shouldn't that mean you pay even lesser for the whole set?
Is that the Peak Design Everyday Sling 3L?
Hey bro , I’ve been looking for reviews of the tokina 33mm 1.4 and I can’t find any complete review . Could you do one ?
Best antidote for GAS Ive seen.
Really nice video. Could you may do one more video like this but about lenses then about cameras? Would be nice and really helpful!
Why would you get rid of the X-T4? Sounds daft to me from the get-go.
very usefull tips , in this year I will change my gear from nikon d5100 to panasonic lumix g9. its a must :))
