  • How to make your own cylindrical square from a Diesel engine wrist pin. Let me know if there is a problem with this measurement methodology

Hey Paul, thats the beauty of a cylinder square, they are self proving and are always right in 1 spot!

It seems like if the base has no rock, then there must be two square sides 180 degrees apart.

I'm playing with 2 wrist pins right now and you're absolutely right.

Back in the early 60's as a second year apprentice under instruction I made a precision cylindrical square with a piece of hydraulic cylinder ram 75mm diam and 300mm long.
The OD had been hard chrome plated and ground.
I centred each end using a lathe and running each end in a bronze tipped steady.
Finally the piece was run between centres and the end face undercut and faced by grinding across the edge face.......that is as square as you can get it without exception.
Due to constrains of security I was unable to take the square with me and so it was left in the workshop tool room as part of the equipment.......one day I will make another one as the method of production and availability of material is so simple.

your doing fine, hand lapping works just fine, it's the result you have achieved that's fantastic

Hi Stewart, Thank you for the comment. This was one of my first video; s I could have done a better job with the execution. Still It was fun and I got a reasonable square reference for the price of picking through the local diesel shop scrap pile.

Thank you Chris I didn't have the funds for a good cylindrical square and thought about the large wrist pins. Free from the scrap pile at a local diesel engine re-builder

You spent 12 minutes (ably) illustrating a relatively trivial bump gauge measurement but you didn’t show us how you squared the ends. ??

Could you please explain the process you used to square the ends off from the surface grinder etc??

@@W1VLF currently stressed with work.... I did manage to start an on-line training for Ham License here in Germany, don't know if I could follow along due to work... How are things there my friend?

Yes. I would be interested in seeing the lapping process for a tolerance of .0001". I suppose the plate you use would be useless after doing a cylinder or two, no?

You correct and re lap from time to time but the geometry isn't always important in a lap

piston/wrist pins for diesel engines on ebay. The come in various sizes. I have an 84x95mm that I got new for about $25
