You can’t leave the car in gear or the auto in park, so the parking brake is pretty important to any EV. Ever look at how tiny the drum brakes are on the back wheels of a car with 4 wheel discs?

The main advantage of the touch sensitive buttons is swiping. You don’t need to look down or fidget when you swipe. It took me by surprise when I realized this is how those sensitive buttons are intended to be used. It’s amazingly intuitive to use, when you need to adjust ACC cruising speed or sound volume or skip songs. You just swipe your thumbs across the middle of the small panels , super easy and effortless, no need to look down or find the right buttons. It’s a pity those buttons are misunderstood.

I think VW are pushing forward and perhaps things like the touch buttons aren’t to everyones taste. A lot of car reviewers look for quality in the wrong places and focus on things such as scratchy plastics. Although I do think there are things on this car that are criminal not to include on a car of this price such as an electric tailgate, you get quality elsewhere in the car that you don’t get on the Skoda. I think the biggest mistake they made with this launch was giving the 1st edition to the journalists and not the 1st edition Max. Both Audi and Skoda press cars were much higher specced. The max version of this car has the upgrades headlights which I believe sell this car over the Skoda. Also the interior is very nice and futuristic but i’ve noticed not to everyones taste. I really like the minimalist style, which I think works for a stress free large family car.

    • @sazwell

Honestly think I'm going to end up preferring the skodas which tend to use the more "old-school" physical button controls - I'm not all about this touch sensitive stuff with no tactile feel, it's fine in other applications but awkward when you are trying to drive

    • @johnadams4571
      @johnadams4571 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You really have no idea. The ID 4 has so many things as standard that need to be purchased as extras on the Skoda. It is Skoda doing the cost cutting, especially on the design front as it looks hideous in comparison.

I mean ideally you want to recover as much energy through regenerative braking as possible, meaning your mechanical braking should be as minimized as possible so you soak up more of your momentum as electrical engergy. The mechanical brakes are mostly there as a backup for when you REALLY need to brake hard so wasting resources on that seems highly redundant.

When the 1st Edition was announced I assumed it would be a fully-loaded-with-options model; but if you compare it in the recently extended range it's somewhere in the middle, and quite well spec'd for the price compared to the newer trims. Hence things like electric seats end up being options - and personally I won't miss them - unless I share it with the wife; that's when electric with memory becomes invaluable.

    • @jj45678o

With the exception of the upgraded lights it was well specced for the price. VW have been quite shrewd with the newer trims. In Ireland you don’t get range and spec in the same package unless you upgrade to the 4th most expensive model. It seems there were disagreements on key features and too many other compromises.
I already picked up a few, with one that's very old:
    - I never bought in the rear disk brakes argument.
    - The door handle thingy is another recipe to loose the whole car to someone else.
    - the next update should allow the seats to fold nicer for flatter cargo floor.
Hopefully they'll go back to fix those soon in an update.

I think Audi's Q4 E-Tron will really hit the sweet spot if families are willing / able to splash out that little bit extra. Brilliant infotainment, layout and materials, and you still get all the practicality of the ID.4 for not a significant amount more.

Has anyone seen stopping distances for any of the ID cars? I notice the story being repeated about engine braking meaning the drum brakes on the rear are fine but unlike other cars no-one seems to be testing that claim? Drum brakes are known to suffer badly from fade with more spirited use.

Great video Rory,. I’m unsure about the ID series, scratchy plastic, build quality and infotainment software glitches all make me ok elsewhere. It’ll be interesting to see the newly launched Q4 reviewed up against its group rivals. Test drove an e-tron the other day, very impressed (currently a B9 S4 owner so the move to EV will be a very different experience with Taycan and e-tron GT being out of budget). Interesting where it’s all going though and it’s clearly the future. Keep up the great work.

You obviously haven't found the switch that slightly alters the performance, and I believe there is a tailgate switch to close itself.
The software glitches doesn't do much for sales though....

I noticed you didn't talk about the cameras. What do the cameras do when you start entering a parking garage or parking spot or toll booth? Do I get a 360° view of the car like with the Nissan?

The brakes are true, as a Toyota mechanic I’ve replaced countless Prius front rotors cause they rust out from lack of use. In a humid climate with city driving, they don’t get used enough.
