It's really great that this abandoned Chieftain starts after so many years with no great issues and knowing where to use the tools: good mechanics and an excellent tank Tank!
I was the gunner on one of these for a couple of years before we went over to Challenger 1. Brings back many fun memories of trying to keep the bloody things on the road whilst eating an egg banjo on the back decks whilst we all stood around watching the driver get dirty.
I am an ex REME Vehicle Electrician. Worked on all variants of Chieftain. So sad to see this abandoned. Great to see you guys working in it. Brought back some memories.😁😁😁

I love how there is just random tanks all over the UK. 😂 Also, you can’t have a hand gun in the UK, but a live tank cannon is ok. 😂 Whats the plan with this one? Great video as usual guys! I also thought Range Rovers were “ unstuckable” lol! 🇬🇧🇺🇸
that brought back memories! - every single box/hatch n Chieftain has about 300% more bolts than is needed to secure it and you need a small ratchet and BA socket set to undo everything just to take a lid off a box

Just so you know, some people are really lucky being able to do this stuff, I'm in New Zealand, we haven't had actual tanks in our army for over 40 years (Scorpions were the last 'tank' the NZ Army had)
I often get calls from my boss asking if I can recover his Range Rover from the middle of a field. I make a point of using the smallest vehicles we have to do the recovery often a little Thwaites 1 ton or a little Polaris Ranger.. It makes him feel sad and foolish.. Happy days..
It’s them stupid Khan 22” wheels and poncey road tyres on em that make em crap off-road .my lads got one with them wheels on it’s gone through more side walls on tyres with em being so thin ..put him some stock size wheels on it and some Goodrich’s on and he’s golden now off-road …still not as good as my old series though .
The trouble is they are useless even when you park one on a grass verge during the school run. So apart from posing in, what use are they? They also have the reputation for being the most unreliable car on UK roads.
@@Qspecialman I think it's the tyres that cripple them, good for blasting down the autobahn at 110, useless on bad surfaces. I'll stick to my '86 110 on military Michelins, although it could give the RR a run for its money in the unreliability stakes.
A friend and I had a friendly rivalry, at the time he had a series 2 Land Rover with new tyres and I had a WW2 Willys Jeep with 4 bald tyres. That Jeep used to leave the LR stuck at the bottom of slippery slopes in a cloud of smoke The Jeep was unstoppable. So I am not impressed by RR with all the walnut trim etc.
@@robmurg You're quite correct, its the tyres that are the issue. I see more Land/Range Rovers and other 4x4s with road going tyres as opposed to off-road tyres or even dual purpose tyres. I'd rather have your 86 110, I have an 89, 130 Land Rover Defender, which I rebuilt and brought to Australia in 2000 and to say that it's done a lot of work is an understatement, but it is still going strong and only owes me for servicing, a thermostat, brakes and batteries!

I haven't seen a Chieftain moving for almost 50 years! I saw one of these on the tank proving grounds near Bovington in the early 1970's and seeing one even moving in reverse today and now forward is remarkable. Most were revamped into Challenger 1 and later Challenger 2's - is remarkable. I bet the Chieftain could tow the Rangerover out of the hole it's dug itself into! !
