Standing in front of me was a man with wearing a poncho reaching out to shake my hand. I was star struck to be in front of one of my heroes, Stevie Ray Vaughan. A few weeks later, I was working the floor at the club and there was a tap on my shoulder. Holy cow it was him again but this time he called me by name. "Joe, we are jamming after the club closes. I want you to sit in with us.". I didn't leave the club until 7 a.m. and got to sit and jam with the man himself. Your reaction to a genuine man like Stevie is beautiful. What you see in this video is 💯 him. A few short months later, I found out about his death and was heartbroken. We lost a legendary man but his soul lives on through people like you. I don't know if you noticed, but he started the song playing a red guitar. He went to tune it and signaled to his tech to get him another. He never missed a note in the change. No one else could do an instrument change mid-song and no miss a beat. SRV was one of a kind. Thank you Stevie, for all the great music you left us to enjoy. And thank you, Maddie, for the reaction.

There is another reason why he changes guitar and specifically for the one that is Charley, this song was written for the person who made that guitar (Charley Wirz) and who unfortunately passed away and was a friend of Stevie, the song was recorded with that guitar and live always play this song with that specific guitar

This is strange. I've seen this performance many times over the years and I could swear he wasn't wearing an ouroborus as an earring. Do you remember that always being there? This concert was from after he got clean and sober. He had 4 years clean when he died in a helicopter crash and he absolutely had a great message to share. He was a really good soul and the world lost a good and a truly humble man that day. I'm just grateful that he left a legacy of some exceptional music for me and others to enjoy and guys like me and others like John Mayer who are a million times better guitarists than I will ever be to learn from and enjoy.
Not to be that guy, but this was a year before he got clean. Which is why I prefer the Nashville 1987 performance of this song, cause he tells everyone about almost dying from his years of substance and drug abuse!

For me Stevie was and still is the greatest guitarist of all time but for once in his life the greatest thing in this performance was the message he spoke. Stevie you and your kind in this world is greatly needed and missed.
Anyone that cares at all about the blues or rock and roll guitar knows who Stevie is, and respects his absurd raw talent and inhuman work ethic. Dude was a mutant, an other, a conduit to the elemental plane of music is one of my favorite ways to describe him. @6:28 He plays with some of the thickest and least plyant strings on purpose. This means that in order to bend them the way he does you need stupid gorilla strength. While playing he is actually and in real time loosening his own strings enough to alter the sound in one song, sometimes multiple times per song. May I humbly suggest watching him in the presence of other legendary players, he is just as humble and pleased to be playing with them as a regular guy would be.
I used to see him before he was famous when I was growing up in Texas! Saw him many times after he did become famous by playing here in Switzerland at the Montreux Jazz Festival! You really need to see Texas Flood Live at the El Mocambo to see the best guitarist ever! It'll be life changing, guaranteed!
Stevie was only 5'5,his bass player,who is 6'4 said Stevie's hands were as big as his! BORN FOR GUITAR! Before doing 200-Plus shows a year,he practiced atleast 5 hours a day,starting at age 9! A PRODIGY!
Steven Stills said Jimi Hendrix had the biggest hands he'd ever seen, it's why he could bend any string & wrap his hands around the neck. Then added, only other person like that is Stevie Ray Vaughn.
His hands were so big because at a young age while he was still growing he was performing EXTREME finger/hand manipulations on the guitar, there for his hands grew large.
Went to many SRV shows in Austin from 1981 to 88'. And even spoke with him and the band after a few of them while they were breaking down their set. SRV and Double Trouble - the best live shows ever; in my lifetime.

This is one of the most "laid back" performances of SRV and really great. If you want to see him really "cook" , then "Texas Flood Live at the El Mocambo" is one you don't want to miss. In my humble opinion SRV is the greatest Blues/Rock guitarist that has ever lived. Your reaction to him was great and your opinion of him is shared by practically all his fans!

They didn't win the national but hey, they did great to get there. They still do "functions". The amount of strength he has in his wrist to play behind his back is phenomenal. Not only does he keep playing while he switches position, he has the entire weight of the guitar held in one hand until he hooks the strap, but while he's playing he also has to angle the guitar a bit, and HOLD it there, so the strings don't hit his back, and mute. I've played guitar all my adult life, and know the strain it takes when you're supporting a neck heavy guitar with your fret hand. How he manages to maintain the dexterity in his fingers, I have no idea. As others have said, he uses VERY heavy gauge strings too, which would chew your fingers up unless you're used to them. His attack on each note is like nobody else. He was a pure bluesman too. Jeff Healey is another amazing blues guitarist. Check out "See The Light". There's a cool duet performance with SRV and Jeff Healey. RIP Stevie, and Jeff.

Maddy, I was lucky enough to get to see Stevie once. But I'll always remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard that he died. Bums me out to this day. He was as good as they come.
When Stevie played live, he just exuded all the confidence in the world. He went on stage just KNOWING THAT EVERYTHING WAS RIGHT WITH EVERYTHING & NOTHING COULD GO WRONG! The thought that anything could go wrong during his performance never crossed his mind! I believe his fashion sense & what he wore also clearly says the same thing! It's not like he 'DRESSED UP', or had 'on stage costumes', These were his everyday clothes! He dressed like this literally EVERYDAY! And whether he tossed his guitar behind his back or behind his head, played with his teeth or his fingers, played lead & rhythm at the same time (on the same guitar), or played right hand only or played left hand only, he didn't have to practice these 'MOVES' before hand, the thoughts just came to him, then he was doing them! Really nice reaction to this amazing man and master guitarist. Stevie had recently got himself cleaned up and had a new outlook on life. Lost him when he was in his prime. Some of his lyrics on songs like "Tightrope", "Crossfire", "Wall Of Denial" are an expression of that message. RIP Mr. Vaughan.

Thanks for your reaction here, Maddy. I'm glad you found this guy. Stevie Ray Vaughn (aka SRV) called himself "an outlaw from south Dallas". Growing up very near there & being just a few years younger myself, we all regarded Stevie as very much a local hero and legend. He died in a helicopter crash just a few months after I got out of high school. It was such a tragic loss. I'm so glad we have so much of his music still here. Again, thanks for your reaction here. Great reaction Maddy, SRV is a true legend, nobody will ever compare in my opinion. The great Eric Clapton was dreading following Stevie’s outstanding performance on the night he sadly died, Clapton said he felt he was doubting himself, Stevie was so on his game that night and Eric felt he just couldn’t follow that, can you imagine Clapton feeling inadequate as a guitarist… that’s the impact SRV had. He also performs the guitar solos on David Bowie’s Let’s Dance and China Girl, just in case you didn’t realise that. Thank you for transporting me back to a small theater in 1984 and letting me relive my night there. His first album had just been released and "Pride and Joy" was just starting to get airplay on radio. I can still remember making eye contact with others in the audience, and I'm sure our facial expressions matched yours. We knew we were in the presence of greatness - no, something beyond that. It sounds like a cliche or really cheesy, but I was still riding a music high hours later. Many years have passed and I've seen hundreds of shows and artists, but nothing topped that night. Maybe three or four other shows might compare, but none have surpassed it. I truly feel blessed that I was there.

That technique is called a rake. You drag the pick down the strings while muting them then unmute on the last string/note. The other thing is called call and response. Quite common in rock and blues. You play or sing something and then you (or someone else) plays something in response.
The sad thing is this Sunday is the anniversary of his passing on August 27, 1990 we lost him in a helicopter crash after a Blues concert where he played with Eric Clapton, Robert Cray and his brother Jimmy Vaughan. They said he played better that night better than he had ever played . In an interview with his sister in law she said he had a purple halo around him no matter what angle you looked and Eric Clapton said he was waiting backstage waiting to go on after Stevie and he looked around and said to someone they expect me too go on after that .
Notice that he started out with an orange guitar. Then he was playing the white guitar. The guitar tech came in and changed the guitar without Stevie losing a beat in the song. And when he kept going back and forth from the amplifiers, it's because the sounds were set for the orange guitar. Now he has to make the adjustments for the white guitar. He's a perfectionist.

Welcome to the SRV club Maddy - I so enjoyed watching your reaction and listening to your commentary, wonderful, truly. I'm 65, did not discover SRV until after his death. I own several of his DVD's and I cherish them. He actually was here in my home town when I was in my rock heyday, but I did not know who he was. I saw Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Peter Frampton, Montrose and others, but to my great regret, I missed Stevie. Along with Pink Floyd, the two biggest misses in my entire life. Thank God for DVD's and/or TH-cam. If you've never looked at Pink Floyd live at Pompeii, go watch it!! If you haven't already, use TH-cam to learn that SRV was truly a one-of-a-kind. His big strong hands and very thick guitar strings was part of it, but his ability to move around on the strings and make them bend to his will is unique in this world (yes, in the entire world, just one SRV). Stevie couldn't read music so he played by ear. The guitar change near the beginning was because the song is about Charlie his guitar tech who died suddenly, the guitar was a gift from him and Stevie named it Charlie. His favorite guitar is named Lenny, a gift from his wife Lenora.
Stevie's 'LENNY' guitar was also a birthday gift from his wife & a few of their friends. They all got together to chip in $50 each (I believe it was $50 each) & bought the guitar for him. It was that very night while his wife was sleeping that he wrote the song 'LENNY'! Stevie literally woke her up the next morning telling her 'You gotta hear this, I just wrote this last night while you were sleeping!' Then he played it for her!

You actually nailed it when you said he was responding to himself. It's called a "call and response" usually done between two musicians, it comes off as a little self indulgent when some players do it with their singing, but Stevie pulls it off beautifully.

This concert was from after he got clean and sober. He had 4 years clean when he died in a helicopter crash and he absolutely had a great message to share. He was a really good soul and the world lost a good and a truly humble man that day. I'm just grateful that he left a legacy of some exceptional music for me and others to enjoy and guys like me and others like John Mayer who are a million times better guitarists than I will ever be to learn from and enjoy.
Not to be that guy, but this was a year before he got clean. Which is why I prefer the Nashville 1987 performance of this song, cause he tells everyone about almost dying from his years of substance and drug abuse!

Anyone that cares at all about the blues or rock and roll guitar knows who Stevie is, and respects his absurd raw talent and inhuman work ethic. Dude was a mutant, an other, a conduit to the elemental plane of music is one of my favorite ways to describe him. @6:28 He plays with some of the thickest and least plyant strings on purpose. This means that in order to bend them the way he does you need stupid gorilla strength. While playing he is actually and in real time loosening his own strings enough to alter the sound in one song, sometimes multiple times per song. May I humbly suggest watching him in the presence of other legendary players, he is just as humble and pleased to be playing with them as a regular guy would be.
I used to see him before he was famous when I was growing up in Texas! Saw him many times after he did become famous by playing here in Switzerland at the Montreux Jazz Festival! You really need to see Texas Flood Live at the El Mocambo to see the best guitarist ever! It'll be life changing, guaranteed!

His hands were so big because at a young age while he was still growing he was performing EXTREME finger/hand manipulations on the guitar, there for his hands grew large.

Went to many SRV shows in Austin from 1981 to 88'. And even spoke with him and the band after a few of them while they were breaking down their set. SRV and Double Trouble - the best live shows ever; in my lifetime.

You analysis is spot on. This man was all heart, and you feel it in everything he does. He was too good for this world.
This is one of the most "laid back" performances of SRV and really great. If you want to see him really "cook" , then "Texas Flood Live at the El Mocambo" is one you don't want to miss. In my humble opinion SRV is the greatest Blues/Rock guitarist that has ever lived. Your reaction to him was great and your opinion of him is shared by practically all his fans!

He gave his life to the music he loved... he was a beautiful person and a angel that had too short of a visit on earth ❤️ i am a 24 year old blues musician and i am about to release my first album next month. In January i will be heading to Memphis Tennessee to compete in the International Blues Challenge with my band! The competitors will be from all around the world. They didn't win the national but hey, they did great to get there. They still do "functions". The amount of strength he has in his wrist to play behind his back is phenomenal. Not only does he keep playing while he switches position, he has the entire weight of the guitar held in one hand until he hooks the strap, but while he's playing he also has to angle the guitar a bit, and HOLD it there, so the strings don't hit his back, and mute. I've played guitar all my adult life, and know the strain it takes when you're supporting a neck heavy guitar with your fret hand. How he manages to maintain the dexterity in his fingers, I have no idea. As others have said, he uses VERY heavy gauge strings too, which would chew your fingers up unless you're used to them. His attack on each note is like nobody else. He was a pure bluesman too.
Jeff Healey is another amazing blues guitarist. Check out "See The Light". There's a cool duet performance with SRV and Jeff Healey. RIP Stevie, and Jeff.

It's not like he 'DRESSED UP', or had 'on stage costumes', These were his everyday clothes!

Really nice reaction to this amazing man and master guitarist. Stevie had recently got himself cleaned up and had a new outlook on life. Lost him when he was in his prime. Some of his lyrics on songs like "Tightrope", "Crossfire", "Wall Of Denial" are an expression of that message. RIP Mr. Vaughan.

Growing up very near there & being just a few years younger myself, we all regarded Stevie as very much a local hero and legend. He died in a helicopter crash just a few months after I got out of high school. It was such a tragic loss. I'm so glad we have so much of his music still here. Again, thanks for your reaction here. Great reaction Maddy, SRV is a true legend, nobody will ever compare in my opinion. The great Eric Clapton was dreading following Stevie’s outstanding performance on the night he sadly died, Clapton said he felt he was doubting himself, Stevie was so on his game that night and Eric felt he just couldn’t follow that, can you imagine Clapton feeling inadequate as a guitarist… that’s the impact SRV had. He also performs the guitar solos on David Bowie’s Let’s Dance and China Girl, just in case you didn’t realise that. Glad you enjoyed this classic and iconic performance, I highly recommend you check out more of Stevie’s stuff, you won’t be disappointed, he’s missed so much, definitely taken too soon, RIP Stevie… Thanks for all the love you passed our way ✌🏼🙏🏻✌🏼

Hello, Maddy.. A late response to your question but that technique at 2:05 That is called a ghost note but aka dead note, or silent note, muted note. You were absolutely spot-on with the assumption in John Mayer finding inspiration in SRV as well. RIP Mr. Vaughan. An inspiration to many!
Thank you for transporting me back to a small theater in 1984 and letting me relive my night there. His first album had just been released and "Pride and Joy" was just starting to get airplay on radio. I can still remember making eye contact with others in the audience, and I'm sure our facial expressions matched yours. We knew we were in the presence of greatness - no, something beyond that. It sounds like a cliche or really cheesy, but I was still riding a music high hours later. Many years have passed and I've seen hundreds of shows and artists, but nothing topped that night. Maybe three or four other shows might compare, but none have surpassed it. I truly feel blessed that I was there.

Hi Maddy, I don’t know if you’ve seen and heard Stevie Ray doing Texas Flood at the El Mocambo, but it’s a must watch and listen to truly understand the unbelievable talent and stage presence of this man. I saw him live once and he was just incredible.

That technique is called a rake. You drag the pick down the strings while muting them then unmute on the last string/note. The other thing is called call and response. Quite common in rock and blues. You play or sing something and then you (or someone else) plays something in response.

The sad thing is this Sunday is the anniversary of his passing on August 27, 1990 we lost him in a helicopter crash after a Blues concert where he played with Eric Clapton, Robert Cray and his brother Jimmy Vaughan. They said he played better that night better than he had ever played . In an interview with his sister in law she said he had a purple halo around him no matter what angle you looked and Eric Clapton said he was waiting backstage waiting to go on after Stevie and he looked around and said to someone they expect me too go on after that .
Notice that he started out with an orange guitar. Then he was playing the white guitar. The guitar tech came in and changed the guitar without Stevie losing a beat in the song.
And when he kept going back and forth from the amplifiers, it's because the sounds were set for the orange guitar. Now he has to make the adjustments for the white guitar. He's a perfectionist.

I'm 65, did not discover SRV until after his death. I own several of his DVD's and I cherish them. He actually was here in my home town when I was in my rock heyday, but I did not know who he was. I saw Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Peter Frampton, Montrose and others, but to my great regret, I missed Stevie. Along with Pink Floyd, the two biggest misses in my entire life. Thank God for DVD's and/or TH-cam. If you've never looked at Pink Floyd live at Pompeii, go watch it!!
If you haven't already, use TH-cam to learn that SRV was truly a one-of-a-kind. His big strong hands and very thick guitar strings was part of it, but his ability to move around on the strings and make them bend to his will is unique in this world (yes, in the entire world, just one SRV).

Stevie couldn't read music so he played by ear. The guitar change near the beginning was because the song is about Charlie his guitar tech who died suddenly, the guitar was a gift from him and Stevie named it Charlie. His favorite guitar is named Lenny, a gift from his wife Lenora.

Stevie's 'LENNY' guitar was also a birthday gift from his wife & a few of their friends. They all got together to chip in $50 each (I believe it was $50 each) & bought the guitar for him. It was that very night while his wife was sleeping that he wrote the song 'LENNY'! Stevie literally woke her up the next morning telling her 'You gotta hear this, I just wrote this last night while you were sleeping!' Then he played it for her!

You actually nailed it when you said he was responding to himself. It's called a "call and response" usually done between two musicians, it comes off as a little self indulgent when some players do it with their singing, but Stevie pulls it off beautifully.
