  • Yes you seen correctly this week i am restoring one of the most iconic rocker covers out there the Honda Civic Type R B16 rocker / cam / valve cover... Let the fun begin!
    LINKS TO THE PRODUCTS USED BELOW.
    Now with this restoration i could have went over the top and smoothed it all out and painted it a wild colour but instead i decided to get as close as i could to the stock finish as i possibly could ( carbon plug cover excluded ) so anyone interested in a lesson / tutorial on how to use wrinkle paint to achieve a factory look and not be left with a loosely wrinkled mess should give this video a watch.
    First things first lets get in unboxed in my usual style with box cutter cam. ( Yes that is a Subaru Impreza EJ20 engine in the background click subscribe to be notified when that video comes out ;) ) As you can see the paint or whats left of the paint is ruined and flaking off and the exposed aluminum alloy has begun to corrode over time also the underside has the usual oil and carbon staining from years of use and hitting VTEC :) The gaskets have also seen much better days so they will be replaced as well when the time comes.
    I got my pick from my Snap-on toolbox to prise old rocker cover gasket free then it was off to the parts washer for a thorough cleaning to remove all traces of oil grease and any other films that may be lurking on the surface. This step is vital as the next stage of paint stripping wont work to its full effectiveness if there is oil on the paint creating a barrier between the paint stripper and the paint.
    So once the valve cover was fully dried i broke out the Paint Panther ( Did you like the Anchorman reference? ) and covered the full cover and left it to do its thing as you can see by the time lapse its a very satisfying process. After the paint stripper had done its job the paint was easily scraped off using a scraper and a wire brush after that it was a case of cleaning up all the excess paint stripper and moving over to the blasting cabinet.
    Once in the blaster the cover was lightly blasted to remove all oxide layers and any remaining paint. A lower pressure was used on this rocker cover as its aluminium and too high a pressure would create craters in the metal and we really want to avoid that.
    After blasting im left with a bare alloy cover that is starting to look a bit better than it did when i first took it out of the box. Next job on the list is to restore the lettering using a mix of wire wheels on the Dremel / Draper multi-tool and then finish it off with a light sanding in one direction to restore the factory brushed effect. Then is was a case of masking up i chose to just do a cut scene for this process as you've seen me do it a million times and it is a very tedious process.
    When all masked up i moved over to the painting table and gave the rocker cover a good de-greasing to ensure all oils from my skin or the blades i was using would not contaminate the painting process. For this paint job i am using a can of VHT red wrinkle paint to match the OEM finish the Type R had from the factory. The key to this paint is consistent heavy coats in a pattern that ensures even coverage. Once coated and left to flash off for a few minutes it was time to bake the cover at 75 degrees Celsius for and hour to get nice tight wrinkles if you dont bake the part the wrinkles end up all loose and saggy and you end up with a real amateur looking job. Heat is the key... but no too much of it!
    After curing overnight i came back to remove the masking and fit the next gasket set. At this point i also lightly sanded the logos again to restore the clean edges and remove any markings from the masking tape again its the attention to these small details that give your project a professional look ;)
    Once all of that was done the oil cap and plug cover were reinstalled along with all new stainless steel mounting hardware and i think you'll agree the finished result looks absolutely stunning, Its a real shame to hide it away under a bonnet / hood but oh well at least it will look lovely when checking the fluid levels haha!

    Hi, I just want to leave a comment here to clear up a few issues that people have been having with the restoration. Yes the cover was sandblasted and did have blast media in behind the vapor plate but what i didn't show on camera was the time i took to ensure the every spec of sand was cleaned out from every nook and cranny of that cover especially from behind the vapor barrier. I would not allow this cover to go back into service without being absolutely certain that there was no debris left inside.
    The paint used in the video is specifically formulated to be used on bare metal, No primer needed. I have used this paint for years and never had an issue with paint failure.
    I also did not mask the grommet recesses deliberately and that is because once the paint has fully cured if you use the correct sized wire wheel and a quick spin in a drill you get a totally clean edge and perfect mating surface for the rubber grommet unlike the sharp jagged edge you always get when masking round grommet recesses. Again i didn't show this on camera as i didn't think you would be interested in a small detail like that.
    So i hope this comment helps you all out and clears up a few of the issues people have been having.
    See you all in the next video :)

    People should be aware though that washing should have been done after blasting

      I brought my H22 valve covers in to be sandblasted and powder coated Honda type R red and it came back with just a little bit of material under the baffle but it was easy to clean out,they looks awesome in red. A little over 2 hundred dollars cad. Not a bad price in my books

    I hope you cover the inside of the cover before sandblasting... Otherwise you probably kill the engine that cover will be put on. Thats a quite "common" mistake, there is plate for oil separation and ventilation of the head. No matter how you do it, it its not covered the sand will "hide" there, and over time it will find its way to oil pump and bearings. I know few engines that got fucked up this way... After full rebuild or just the cover respray, engine seized.... If the cover was sandblasted without thinking, there was always sand in oil pump that caused the engine failure. (There was also someone youtube, who did restoration of brake calipers and sandblasted them, without covering the cylinder? (sorry, english is my 2nd...) and have to use force to put the piston back, its supposed to slide easily in... wasnt that you? :D )

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Thanks for leaving a comment. I can assure you that there is no sand left in this cover, I do a lot of work off camera to ensure whatever i am restoring is fully functional again and i would never let this cover be used again if i thought it was in anyway going to cause engine failure. As for the brake calipers i know the video you mean and i wasn't me. When i restored my calipers the piston was left in place until the blasting was over to protect the machined surface.

      @@RRCRestoration Glad to hear. :-) I like watching these "no music/talking. just work" type of videos. Buuut there is a few YT channels who doing this (car parts especially) and with similar format (to be honest, there is not much ways how to to this), and sometimes i lost track of what i saw and where. So if you take it personally in any way, im sorry.
      I hope you are right with the cover, as i said a know about few engines wasted because of this. The only way to make sure there is no sand, is to cover it up before blasting (the easiest and fastest way by the way...) or drill out the vapor plate, clean it perfectly (people still find there some sand left after Hours of cleaning , i remmenber when i did cover for my Honda, it wasnt blasted, chamber is too small.... But when i cleaning it, there was still some oil left under the plate. And that was oil, something that can be dissolved, i use several degreasers, but there was always oil left every time i pour some cleaner in. And this is a sand, you have to remove it mechanically... ), and rivet it back in place. Best way to make sure there is no sand left without removing the plate, would be a ultrasound cleaner, put cover in, tilted on one side, allowing the sand to fall off. Clean it, put it back in, tilted on other side, and repeat until there is no sand in water ( i would filter it and look for sand etc.). But sooo much time and effort wasted, when you can spend only 30 minutes masking the inside and save a lot of time.

    • @Jon-zd2xx
      @Jon-zd2xx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      he shouldnt have blasted it in general imo, its very difficult to get all of the blasting media out of the baffles on the back, it might be okay but i think just using sandpaper would have gotten the same results just more work

      ive yet to have a problem on my dc2. felpro is great and domestic gaskets on ebay haven't failed me yet and they are cheapies. Just depends on application and which seal it actually is. Something like the rocker cover isnt gonna make any real difference. While on the topic plenty of aftermarket parts workout fine aswell again depending on application
