Who else is seeing this video for the first time, while doing Expand in July 2023? Love these foundational videos! So happy that Adriene is putting them in the monthly practices! Sending positive vibes to all who read this. 😊🙏
I'm so grateful to be able to share this knowledge- especially through the power of youtube! ;-) Thank you so much and keep in touch! I love to hear about peoples experiences on the mat!
Ouchie mamma that was sore in the hips. Definitely tight in there. I'm not quite sure what square off your hips are. I tried the thumb trick. Are my hips suppose to be aligned?
That was a cool yoga video, thank you Adriene. Its always good to learn the foundations of things, its the best way to build up to a full practice. So thank you once again for the wonderful yoga you give us. You are awesome namaste. 🙏 🧡
Combined this with Full Body Flow to put the lunge tips into practice :) I found it quite hard to hold the position for so long, but it's much easier to do it when flowing :). Was sweating buckets, apparently hot yoga season has arrived in Italy lol.
As a teacher I am so grateful for these foundation videos to visit on occasion to ensure my teaching is on key between continuing ed. Many thank you's Adriene for being ballsy enough to put yourself out like you do with such integrity. Namaste.
EXPAND 🌟 | July 11, 2023 | I do believe this is the first time I've come across this foundational practice - which doesn't happen very often after 3.5 years of daily Yoga with Adriene! I did a lower body strength training yesterday which made this one pretty intense on my quad, but to make it even I repeated it so I could do it on both legs! 🙏
I decided to go through the foundations again. I went through most of them last July when I started. It's amazing how good it is to refresh. I find things that I had tweaked and was doing wrong. Yes, refresh!
Hi! Your name cracked me up! Love it. I would first advise you to not rush the transition. Then I would say to imagine a little hurdle in the middle of your mat. As you step your leg up towards the front edge of your mat - consider going UP and OVER the hurdle to step. SO, yes, like you said lifting the upper body a bit- engaging the center as you move forward. I like to consider all my transitions moving from the space between the naval & spine. If you have to take multiple steps- do it :-)
I am SO happy that I found you and your chanel. I've been so intimated to practice yoga at a public class, or consistently alone, for years... Because, I've never found a way for poses to be broken down and fully explained. And, I need to UNDERSTAND what I'm doing and why, to really focus. Yoga can take people's minds and bodies so far, it's astonoshing. But, you make me accept and feel ok about falling or having to modify poses, hahah. You really shined the light on the practice, that I have been searching for for years. I have been consistently practicing for almost a month and am committed to myself. So all gushy. Thank you!!! ♡
A Spanish lesson, useful muscular information sensitvely and humourously delivered. These move details are perfect for the stage of my pracitce. Thanks again for all your hard work.
Hi adrien I just want to say that I appreciate you so much, you’re just so cool and calm and funny and a great teacher ❤I love love love doing yoga along with your videos
new video foe moi ... yay EXPAND into beginnings of body & mind set aside what was ... drop into allow now Namaste to all practising and May all lunge into expansion
You give me a whole new concept of complicated, simple things like 'creating space'. I'm more aware of the makings & abilities of my body, and its components because of it. Thx, yo'. Lots of people are decent at yoga. I don't think the ability to teach it... can necessarily be taught. You're awesome at it.
Oh Adriene, you are just what I needed having gone through a number of apps to try and find out more about “proper” yoga. Thank you for sharing so generously xx
Not only do I Love your channel and your guidance but I absolutely love your intro and Outro music especially the guitar and the way those notes are played it is such a good theme it brings me to such a good mood and good mental space every time 💯🙏🏽🔥
I love when she's like "just take a rest" because yeSS! why not taking a little rest? what am I trying to prove? and this is my 4th month doing yoga and trying to get that energy through the day. it's working,, so thanks Adrianne.
Hi again! Still (s-l-o-w-l-y) working my way through your “Foundations of Yoga” videos. Decided to check in and say this one was a real challenge the first time I did it but I am amazed at how much easier it was just the second time. As I continue this journey, it is interesting that my body seems to “remember” the positions. Once again, thank you for making these videos accessible (for free!) AND for your teaching style...at least in these beginner videos....guess I’ll have to see if you “get tough” once I’m past these videos LOL
I didn't realize I put too much weight on my fingertips until you mentioned they *weren't* supposed to be a different color than the rest of our hands. Thank you for the video!
This will sound silly and weird to some but i need to know… during the lunge do we position our knee to the outside of our boob or inside? 😅or just generally squash it against our chest? Or is the answer “buy tighter sports bras / wrap your chest tightly before yoga so that isn’t a problem”?
Hey Adriene! I had a c-section six months ago and my galbladder removed three months ago. So after an upper and lower abdominal surgery I am coming back to yoga extremely slowly and I think going through your videos is going to work very well for me! I'm starting with the foundations series and then will do the beginner series. My question about this pose: I still have a medium-sized post-partum belly and my breasts are (and always have been so will most likely remain) huge. When I do this lunge my belly and breasts are resting (actually more like squishing) against my thigh. I am unable to find any space and am wondering if it is normal to feel your upper body resting against the thigh or if that is something I will experience until my belly goes down?
I really struggle with this pose - I feel like a heavy clutz - my tummy sinks down to my leg and I struggle to hold myself up without relying on my poor hands! Any tips?
Hi Adriene, Am only just beginning my yoga journey and your videos are an inspiration to me :-) Am having difficulty with runner's lunge. I am overweight and my belly seems to get in the way... was wondering if a low lunge would be a good substitute? Low lunge seems to work similar muscles in the legs but allows me to work abs to lift through the heart and spine. Namaste :-)
Hi Adriene! I have just found your channel and am in love with it :)! I have done bits and pieces of yoga over the years (I am 68) and want to expand my practice. My lower back is sensitive to forward bend type movements. I would like to, little by little, strengthen my ability to do that type of movement. Is there a way (perhaps even through other poses) to ease toward and into that ability without freaking my back out by doing something premature? thanks so much for your website! Lorna
I really had a hard time with this pose....I have really bad knees and I felt this one put a lot of pressure on them and it was really hard to hold for a period of time. I will get there I’m sure. Namaste 🙏🏻
Okay, I'm really glad I'm not the only one saying this: My boobs get in the way on this one. I don't understand how to make this work with short arms and a big chest. That being said...your videos don't make me feel like a failure for that, and I appreciate it :)
Sometimes I feel like I have the shortest arms ever. But realistically it's the boobs and my stomach that are in the way and I would need a gibbon's arms to do not have to shuffle my knees into my armpits. Another thing is the easy-peasy stepping one foot through to the front of the mat from down dog :D
Good morning everyone! This pose has been kicking my butt lately, came to see what I was doing differently...turns out I was just being too hard on myself 😅😅 I can always drop the knee!
I feel like either my lower leg is too long or my stomach is in the way to have my foot between my hands. Any suggestions for the plus sized folx? Love your vids.
Adriana, how do us 'chestier' girls make this pose (and others where knees are towards the shoulders) work for us?? Can't seem to find a good position in it... Please help Tits McGee and co out! Love ya work x
Wow yes this is really good I'm feeling nice and stretched out and as I've stated in past videos watched I Relish in stretching. Alright until tomorrow which I look so forward to, warmest regards. Jai Namaste 🙏🏽😘💖🤗💐
Wondering if anyone can help me understand the position I should have in a yoga lunge: I am trying to wrap my head around a) pulling my thighs into center line while simultaneously pulling the front leg back into the hip crease while pulling the back leg (hip) forward. In my mind I am trying to pull all 4 planes into the center. Almost like opposing tug-pull in all directions. Is this the correct way to think about this? When I do this I immediately can feel my hips feeling out of alignment in all planes.
Hi, I recently found you on the net; thank you so much for your welcoming way, making yoga feel like it is for anybody, [even a baby boomer like me ;-) ] ! I'm sorry if this question is covered elsewhere, but i wanted to ask about getting into runner's lunge from a position where both hands are on the mat and both feet are back, such as in downward dog. Even if I raise my leg high, I can't step or swing it forward in a way that clears the mat and gets my foot between my hands. I'm sure this is common in beginners, but I wanted to know how you recomend getting the foot forward (ie, push it forward or stand and reposition) and if there is a good way to practice to get better at this (besides just the obvious one of keep trying it will get better, lol). Thank you again, I think you and you're videos are great!
I realized it's super difficult for me to straighten my back and open my heart space while in runners lunge, I know I'm super tight all over but which muscles are causing this I wonder? Gotta keep working on all of it I guess!
This confuses me as well. When I do what *I* think is peeling my hip back, my whole upper leg moves back and my knee is no longer over my toe. I don't know how to make it work . . .
I always teach bent leg standing poses with the knee directly above the heel as you did here as it gives the most stable foundation for these poses,, HOWEVER- extending the knee beyond the ankle is NOT hyper extending the knee, ( as you stated), if it were then virasana and Supta virasana would be super damaging as you would be “hyper extending” the knee even MORE and as we both know that is not the case…. ………. …..
I'm new to yoga and so happy to have found this channel! Really enjoying it 😊 however I find this pose in particular quite challenging - I can't get my back to straighten, it looks more like a cat-runner-lunge 😅 what am I doing wrong? 🙈
I know this video is 8 years old but this is killer on my knees. Can you show a modified runner's lunge that takes some of the weight off of the knees?
I can’t seem to keep my spine straight in this pose but my daily yoga practice includes this pose. What should I do??? Should I just skip this pose whenever it comes up or something
Hey Adriene! So I have old roller derby injuries in both knees that like to act up every once in a while. On those days, it's really hard for me to do a runner's lunge, so I was wondering if there was any other posture that might be easier on the knees with the same benefits, or something I could substitute out while following you videos. Thanks!
I like the vibe of this video. It could still be a little clearer "script" -wise. It's hard to see what's happening as I go, so narration is really important (and could be a little slower)
Adriene, i have a question, please answer me, thanks a lot: When you try to parallel your hip with your thumb (thumbs up ;) ), does it feel like you put your weight equally in two legs, not just the front one and colapse your body forward?
Hi Adirene! I am just starting, amd I was wondering if there was any modifications for people who are overweight and are bold legged because I struggle with moving the leg back and forth when it comes to transitioning poses from lunge to downward dog and back.
Hi, Adrienne! I'm new to yoga and I love your vids. I realise this video is ancient, but I was hoping you might help me. I have a slightly embarrassing problem with some postures, runner's lunge included. Namely, my boobs. I wouldn't say I own an incredibly large set, but still they are big enough to get in the way when I do the lunge and at time (esp. during period) it's even painful. I'm doing my best not to collapse onto my thigh, but my arms are just not long (flexible?) enough, so if I touch the ground, my breast is pressed into my leg. Of course, I can push it inside or outside my thigh and this is where my question comes: what's the "natural" side to push my breast to? Is it better to have it on the inside with my thigh close to my armpit, or on the outside with my thigh under my sternum? Or is there a completely different solution I'm missing here? Blocks do help, but I was hoping there might be a way for me do to without them.

I have been doing yoga since I was a kid and really most of us have - we just don't know it! :-)
Hahah yes the flexibility we had as kids but then ad we get older we lose touch if it.

That was very hard hahahaha to hold it in its ideal way for this long. But I learned a lot. Thanks a lot !
I really felt the burn after this one, this will come in handy on my weight loss journey, thanks again for a great video!

You have a naturally calming voice, I came across you looking for teaching points for a few warm up exercises. I will watch more. Thanks
Thankyou for this, Adriene. I love these videos- they're super useful x
Wow! This was just amazing - the slow step by step explanation made me realize and improve it so much my asana - thank you sooo much, Adriene!
Shine your heart forward and that would be on the inhale. Thanks Adrienne I never thought about it like that.
Adriene, your videos are really well done. I tried the Forward Fold and I'm going to give this a go. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you Adriene, you are a wonderful teacher. Love you! :)
This one feels so good! Thanks, Adriene!

Wow you are a really wonderful teacher! So fun!
One of the best leg stretch exercise🙂👌
I didn't realize I put too much weight on my fingertips until you mentioned they *weren't* supposed to be a different color than the rest of our hands. Thank you for the video!
Thank you. I enjoyed this class. 😌
Cool Runnings!!!
This will sound silly and weird to some but i need to know… during the lunge do we position our knee to the outside of our boob or inside? 😅or just generally squash it against our chest? Or is the answer “buy tighter sports bras / wrap your chest tightly before yoga so that isn’t a problem”?
You can do whatever is most comfortable, just make sure the knee is over the ankle! For me, i just let it get squished😂
My boob is squished as well haha
Excellent question! I have small boobs so haven’t thought about this much before, but mine is indeed smushed!
Awesome personality lol.. Easy instructions.. Calm flow to it all. Love it
Hey Adriene!
This was great. I did it twice, to be even, and my legs were burning and a little shaky at the end.
For the runner that I am 🥰
I really struggle with this pose - I feel like a heavy clutz - my tummy sinks down to my leg and I struggle to hold myself up without relying on my poor hands! Any tips?
Day 11 of July🙏🏼❤️ day 862

Hi Adriene,
Am only just beginning my yoga journey and your videos are an inspiration to me :-)
Am having difficulty with runner's lunge. I am overweight and my belly seems to get in the way... was wondering if a low lunge would be a good substitute? Low lunge seems to work similar muscles in the legs but allows me to work abs to lift through the heart and spine.

Lorna
I didn't want to do yoga today. I wanted to learn something. So, I found what felt good and learned about yoga instead!
I really had a hard time with this pose....I have really bad knees and I felt this one put a lot of pressure on them and it was really hard to hold for a period of time. I will get there I’m sure. Namaste 🙏🏻
July 11, 2023..... ...still catching up from the big hiatus.3 of 3 My first time doing this vintage practice....just a kid...... :)
Love all the videos. But with this one I didn't quite get the hip crease thing..pull it how to get them in line?
Grate video thanks !! using it for my daily post run stretch.
Okay, I'm really glad I'm not the only one saying this: My boobs get in the way on this one. I don't understand how to make this work with short arms and a big chest. That being said...your videos don't make me feel like a failure for that, and I appreciate it :)
lmao i have the same issue! i'm not at all a small chested girl xD i just have to shuffle around till it just feels right
I feel you, searching google for "where do I put my boobs yoga lunge" is how I found this video, lol. still looking for an answer
Also wondering this! Any tips Adriene?
Sometimes I feel like I have the shortest arms ever. But realistically it's the boobs and my stomach that are in the way and I would need a gibbon's arms to do not have to shuffle my knees into my armpits. Another thing is the easy-peasy stepping one foot through to the front of the mat from down dog :D
it helps if i keep my knee between my boobs. i have the same problem
Good morning everyone! This pose has been kicking my butt lately, came to see what I was doing differently...turns out I was just being too hard on myself 😅😅 I can always drop the knee!

Adriana, how do us 'chestier' girls make this pose (and others where knees are towards the shoulders) work for us?? Can't seem to find a good position in it... Please help Tits McGee and co out!
Love ya work x
wondering this too
My tiddies killing me when doing this stretch 😭
Thanks!
You're very funny :') Thank you for all thoses videos ! Namaste.
Wow yes this is really good I'm feeling nice and stretched out and as I've stated in past videos watched I Relish in stretching. Alright until tomorrow which I look so forward to, warmest regards. Jai Namaste 🙏🏽😘💖🤗💐

Lovely and helpful video! Thank you!
Great stretch before running! Thanks from one amateur runner to another. haha
😍😍😍😍 shes wild
Wondering if anyone can help me understand the position I should have in a yoga lunge: I am trying to wrap my head around a) pulling my thighs into center line while simultaneously pulling the front leg back into the hip crease while pulling the back leg (hip) forward. In my mind I am trying to pull all 4 planes into the center. Almost like opposing tug-pull in all directions. Is this the correct way to think about this? I'm going back to the basics. In the beginning.

That's always, with yoga, I believe - always both sides.

This confuses me as well. When I do what *I* think is peeling my hip back, my whole upper leg moves back and my knee is no longer over my toe. I don't know how to make it work . . .
Ha ha! It was probably me my friend. xo

Hello, thanks for the video! How do I know if my legs a stretched or distanced out enough?
Adriene, i have a question, please answer me, thanks a lot:
When you try to parallel your hip with your thumb (thumbs up ;) ), does it feel like you put your weight equally in two legs, not just the front one and colapse your body forward?
A quick question. I have a problem to reach the ground with my hands due to bigger than average breasts. Is it ok to use yoga blocks under my hands?
Is it better to have it on the inside with my thigh close to my armpit, or on the outside with my thigh under my sternum? Or is there a completely different solution I'm missing here? Blocks do help, but I was hoping there might be a way for me do to without them.
Stormchantress hi! I just came here with the exact same issue! Did you find a solution? Cheers!
