Seymour Duncan JB is THE humbucker of a period. You think of a hot humbucker - you think of JB. Just like many legendary things it isn't perfect, but there are reasons why it became so iconic) I love this pickup.
I play 70s and 80s prog rock/metal/jazz fusion and the JB totally delivers. I use a very different kind of distortion than all that moronic chugging stuff. I don't detune.
Out of any video I've ever seen.. you make me want an Ibanez more than anything else lol. You're such a modest but yet extremely talented person and that's an attitude that makes your videos so easy to watch and relate to!
Dude! You are without a doubt one of my favorite youtubers. Everything from your attitude, sense of humor, knowledge and guitar playing is completely awesome. Keep up the good work man! Rock on!
And mineral oil can loosen the frets. I use a wax called Howard's feed a wax. It conditions the fret board nicely and it's not oil based so it won't threaten the seating of the frets. Not to down play Pixxy's guitar knowledge. He's a great insight on guitars and great player as well . We share the same passion for guitars. I was a loyal Gibson and fender guy until I bought 1996 Ibanez rg270dx. It has the tb-4 and jazz pups with coil split and an original Floyd rose trem. Bought it off ebay for 265 beans. Once I played it, it was game over. Bought 3 more after that. Just great built, great playing guitars for the money.
JB is just a great pickup for classic rock and classic metal, sounds great for leads as well. Cleans up pretty well also (still stings a little when clean, but a nice sound)
Great tones and playing Steve! I was searching around for a good single coil to match with the JB and Jazz. You show that Custom Stack Plus in a really good light. It looks overall a really good combination. Thank you!
I like how you say, "What's up?", then get distracted by your guitar, rip a solo, and then say it again. I'm glad I'm not the only one who loses my memory to my instrument. XD
I arrived here for the pickup demo. And came away loving the mineral oil tip. I was actually looking for it to condition a cutting board. So funny it was mentioned. 😃
I put the same JB / Jazz into my Ibanez 450DX and the guitar just came alive with great tone. JB is kinda my go to bridge pickup. I have '59 and Jazz in neck positions of my guitars. But yeah If you don't like the Ibanez guitars because they are bright and brittle sounding but love the fast necks, throw in SD's and it's a whole new tone.
I have a 2002 S370. I put JB Humbucker in the neck, quarter pounder for strat in center, and Duncan distortion in the bridge. I get some great heavy riffs with it. It's a huge improvement to my stock pickups I had.
Thanks for posting! I like the sound of the SH-4 JB bridge pick-up and the clean sound of the Jazz (SH-2) bridge pick-up. I just ordered both pick-ups from Guitar Center for my Ibanez S520 that I acquired several months ago. Can't wait to install it!
Hey Steve - Great video as ever! Heres an interesting request, any chance you could make a video on how to install pickups? I.E the soldering process and what not to do and really the basics of wiring up pickups etc? Great video, keep rockin' Jake.
I just ordered a Gibson Les Paul with a JB in the bridge.. been unsure about exactly whether it's better distorted than the 498t but it sure sounds good clean, exactly what I feel is the perfect bridge clean humbucking sound - warm, focused and responsive.
You are COOL very great, informative and super entertaining. Liked everything and the mineral oil tip will be useful. I love the sound, the pickups, the guitar and your attitude. Rock on....
Boiled linseed oil for the fret board. I've used it for 20 yrs. on my Yamaha classical acoustic. Put a lite drop on a cloth to clean the muck from the fret board and the another lite coating again on the board and let it set for a few min. to let it soak in and wipe it clean. You can find it at Lowe's or Home Depot. I've only been able to find it in the larger cans so it should last a lifetime.
Man you are awesome! This is just what I needed! I've been debating about pickups for my RG and I decided to get Duncan JB 'S and jazz but I didn't know which single coil to use. So when I heard you say that the stack you are using gives a stratocaster sound I was like, "Heck Yeah, man!" And yeah, the Ibanez stock pickups are way too light. Great job, dude! ROCK ON!
Just a word of advice. If your RG has a trembucker, (edge, Floyd, etc) you need the Seymour Duncan TB-4, same as the JB just spaced for the tremolo bridges.
+Vinny Raptor. If it is a Fender style tremolo, you would need to have the trembucker for the spacing on the poles to line up with the strings properly. I just ordered mine actually Sunday night. I have the RG series ibanez with the edge III locking trem.
melissa12010 the tremolo is an ibanez synchronized tremolo, but i have seen this guitar (ibanez grx20) and guitars like ibanez sa series (i think this one had synchronized tremolo) and with humbuckers and not trembuckers, so thats why i have my doubt
Great demo man 🤘 I had some 59's in another guitar and was thinking about these in my new one, for that classic 80's hard rock/metal tone. You proved they will go there! Thanks for sealing the deal. Rock on brother! 🤘😜🤘
Loving the new pups! I was thinking of either throwing the JB/Jazz or Distortion Mayhem set into my SG and this just pushed me towards my first choice of the JB/Jazz. Rock on Steve.
For what it’s worth, mineral oil is also a petroleum distillate but I’m told it and its variants are perfectly safe to use on exposed grain wood. Lemon oil is a big no no, it has a solvent in it and can break down glue holding down inlays and fret markers.
Thanks, you have me really considering a JB or an SH-6 and a pair of STK-6s for my Charvel with an HSS set up. The Jackson pickups are pretty thin. The singles are not noiseless and way down on output from the humbucker.
Yo! What's up?! I've been following your channel for sometime, awesome work, very inspiring! You're a great dude, very knowledgeable, and even though I'm an experienced guitar player, I definitely learned a great deal about guitars after I started watching your videos. Also, after watching this one in particular, I just HAD to get the JB + STK-S6 + Jazz pickup set for my 2012 Ibanez S570B in gorgeous white. Great sound, and like you said, huge improvement over the stock ones. Cheers from Brazil!
I have this set in an Epiphone Les Paul (a Korean one), and it is a very good upgrade in both tone and sustain. Get a zebra set for 25% extra coolness.
Those Ibanez S series guitars are a good choice for size, comfort, playability, light weight, thin necks, etc. A nice alternative to the Fender Stratocaster (hence the S), with their own vibe. Don't have any, but they are cool. Saw a dude out on a gig with one once (SSH), and he sounded spectacular, and it looked very comfortable on him, like he wore it well.
I agree with you, that the middle pup often doesn't get the love it deserves. Once I played a gig on vocals and mostly rhythm on the middle pup of my Carvin DC145 (HSH). Don't think I changed it the whole set we played. Was their AP11 pup, sounded great through a Carvin AG100 amp. It is surprising also, how well voiced the Carvin amps are for Carvin guitars when you match them up. My DC145 also sounded spectacular through their vintage series tube Nomad amp.
Yeah, that's probably the plan. I totally forgot about the f-spacing when I ordered them. The strings are directly over all the poles except the low E, which is slightly off, and the high E, which is at the edge of the pole. I've seen worse, but I'll probably still make the change anyway.
I have an S370 and I think this is by far the best "Super Strat" there is. The body is the perfect shape and thickness, and the balance is perfect as well. The body is a single piece of solid Mahogany. I just stripped the nasty RedRockFlat orange paint off mine this weekend, I can't believe they covered up the beautiful wood with that hideous orange! Used ones in near perfect shape go for south of $250 dollars. I bought mine with a hardshell case for $149.
Dammit, I am sitting at work on a Saturday morning with a monster deadline on Monday, and I just watched two of your video's back to back, and still going strong.
Hi there i have almost the same set-up ibanez s470 , with the jazz and jeff beck bridge. In the middle i still have the original singlecoil. The guitar is older than yours, no tremsetter. I also like the versatility very much,, only pity that i can't get a les-paulish sound out of it. So looking for an other extra guitar.....
HA! You might be right. All the strings are directly over the poles except the low E, which is slightly off center, and the high E, which is at the edge of the pole. I could throw an f-space in here and use the regular spaced in one of the LPs. Let's see how the budget works out.
This is a very timely video, I have an S370 RRF ( Korean version they made in 2001/2002 ) and I am going strip in down and upgrade it, I have pretty much decided to go with Railhammer Humbuckers but I was still searching for what to put in the middle position, I think I might have found what I need right here! The stock pickups are lacking in the bottom end for sure and are not really muddy, but they aren't really clear either maybe because they just aren't that hot. Thanks for the video.
Really great combo there. I have an ESP LTD EDC401-VF with a JB in the bridge and a '59 in the neck position, and I love that combo. The Jazz is a little too soft for me. I really want a Strat with STK-S6's in it too. I'm sure you're already aware of it, but for those who don't know the STK-S6 is the noiseless version of the SSL-5, which is the pickup that David Gilmour uses in his black Strat.
Steve. Let it be known! I'm purchasing these pickups based on YOUR review. It was difficult funding what I wanted. Looking at everything from Alt 8 to Dimarzios to Dragonfire. But you made the difference. Much success 2014 \m/
I had bought a Chibson LP..and of course it sounded awful..I put it away for a few months. Ordered this set of pups, went away on a job for a few months and kinda forgot about it. I finally got them in and I just can't seem to put that guitar down. On top of this set I also put in a roller bridge and locking tuners.. I own a few guitars and I've never been a big LP style guitar dude.. but it's these pups.. I just can't get enough of them.
Man what great sounding pickups. I have one of these guitars, I refinished it from flat lavender to jade green. I had similar issue with Floyd Rose. just not stable. So I installed an old original Floyd (not patented one). It's awesome now except I need your pickups. By the way I love the songs you were doodling. God taste
That Ibanez sounds great! I actually got a really light MIM-strat with a JB in the bridge and a lil' 59 in the neck, which I love. Has the stock single coil in middle position but after watching this I'm gonna replace it with the Custom Stack Plus :D
I was thinking about taking a 'Far East' Les Paul and putting in a JB (SH-4) and a Jazz (SH-2) in the neck. I don't think I can really go wrong with that. I had also considered using a Pearly Gates (SHPG) in the bridge instead. Great video... keep it up!
When I put duncans on an Ibanez RG, I was advised that I only needed to get a trembucker (F-spaced) for the bridge as the spacing on the neck pickup wouldn't be too far out - this turned out to be the case. I'd leave it as is, but the thought of upgrading another guitar to Jeff Beck grade awesomeness ..... Sweet !
I love your videos, theyre always extremely entertaining and insightful. The only thing that's bugging me is the difference in volume between the guitar and your voice. I have to turn the volume up to hear what you say but then get blown away by the killer guitar licks, both in awe and sound level lol... Maybe hang the mike from above you? I don't mind hearing the pick every now and again if it means I can hear you clearly speak. Cheers for the awesome video.
Just revisited this video for the who know how many times. I was thinking you should do a July 4th video with this guitar and pickups and Guitar Rig 5. That would sound awesome.
I'm still bashing my noggin' over which pickups to put in my S-470...I've got an EMG-85, a Duncan Distortion, or a Full Shred I was considering for the bridge...that damn mahogany body!
The JB SH4 sings... I have used EMG 81/85/60 ... I prefer Duncans .. used to use Jazz in neck but recently switched to 59 as the cleans so more pristine and gain notes sing better.
I've always abhorred the 81...had a JB in an old "no bozos" Beretta...I'm considering running an Alnico II in the neck and splitting it...a 5way switch with two humbuckers.
I don't mind the EMG 81 .. it just sounds a tad thin compared to the JB and over compressed ... I just love the overall sound and dynamics of the JB ..it sustains better too.
Hello Steve! I really liked the sound of your new pickups! Clarirty, bright, crisp sounding. Of course your tone patches are amazing and so rich! The rhythm pickup and and No 2 sound best for me... Your playing seems more fluid of late, effortless... Your chops are tight! Nice vid!!!! Thanks for the upload and great seeing you again!!!
Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz are my fave pickups for my 2 Jackson dinkys. I also have a Seymour Duncan Dime bucker in a King v Jackson. But the oldest guitar in my collection is a very beat and worn out Jackson Frankenstein with all Carvin parts. a M22SD in the bridge and 2 AP11's in the neck and middle with all other parts Carvin.... tuning keys, all wiring, jack, only the neck and body are Jackson. Just try Carvin pickups. they are amazing.
damn what a nice tone and colour.Again nice vid..Bdw off the topic what do you think about Peavey Valveking 100 head i can buy it brand new for 400$ is it worth it?
Same here, but I like mineral oil better. I've read a few articles that made good points about lemon oil (the petroleum distillates not being good for wood) and recommended the switch to mineral oil. I switched a few years ago and have been very happy with its performance.
Actually, no, I did get the SH-4. I probably should have got the f-spaced pup. Just looking at it, all the strings are directly over the poles except the low E, which is slightly off center, and the high E, which is close to the edge of the pole. I can score the f-spaced for this guitar and then put the sh-4 in one of the fixed bridge guitars. I completely forgot about that when I ordered them.
I've just got exactly the same pickups for my RG. Just to clarify: in your demo, the wiring isn't standard Ibanez wiring where the humbuckers split when combined with the middle pickup? All three pickups are humbucking no matter what, even when neck and middle or bridge and middle are combined? Thanks.
I have installed the same hot rod set on my chibson. The jb sounds fine but the jazz is too bassy for my taste, i dunno if something is wrong with mine, it does not sound as yours. btw. What do you recommend for cleaning maple fingerboards? cheers
+Aaron Rodriguez Maple boards usually are finished. In fact I've never seen a maple fingerboard without gloss. Amount of gloss may vary though. So you just rub it with dry cloth from dust and all kinds of DNA, that's about it. Unfinished or oiled boards such as ebony or rosewood may require treatment. But there's a debate over this as well. I wrote all of this and realized it may be bit too late, post it anyway :D
So...if I'm ever gigging and get really hungry, I can part the strings and tongue-strafe up and down the fingerboard? Seems like a fitting evolution to Hendrix' teeth plucking!
Steve I know this is an old video but I JUST stumbled upon it..I'd love to know what pickup configuration you have set up for this? For ex is it bridge in 1st then bridge and middle in the 2nd..or is it split bridge and middle..and is it in series or parallel etc. I just love the combination you have but would love to know how it's set up with your switching. All your info on this would be greatly appreciated
Seymour Duncan JB is THE humbucker of a period. You think of a hot humbucker - you think of JB. Just like many legendary things it isn't perfect, but there are reasons why it became so iconic) I love this pickup.
+MrCorvusC I gotta say I'm not massive fan of it for modern metal. For vintage or 80s metal it's unbeatable.
@@resington agree- BKP or EMG are way better for modern metal
I play 70s and 80s prog rock/metal/jazz fusion and the JB totally delivers. I use a very different kind of distortion than all that moronic chugging stuff. I don't detune.
It's perfect
@@angusorvid8840amen brother!
i JUST got these for my new LP, and after listening to this, I think I made a great decision. Thanks for the great demo, even if it is 9 years old:)
Out of any video I've ever seen.. you make me want an Ibanez more than anything else lol. You're such a modest but yet extremely talented person and that's an attitude that makes your videos so easy to watch and relate to!
I own 9 ibanez guitars. Korean, Japan, all awesome guitars. Stock Pickups are awesowe too.
Stereo sound hold me back to 18 years old.Emotive feeling.
That tone is........Wow...........just..........Wow....
I could watch this guy play and fiddle for hours. His playing is amazing and you feel there with him experiencing whatever he is experimenting with.
That is a seriously versatile setup and all sounds are actually usable back to the drawing board
It can also loosen you stool.
I adore JB pickups. You really can`t go wrong with them.
I just installed the JB and Jazz in my RG350. Couldn't make decision on what to put in the middle and after hearing STK-S6 I am sold! I want that!
Thank you!
The pickups articulation are really friggin' good! 👌🔥

Jake manning I’m finally upgrading the pickups in my 1998 S470 and would love a video like this.
Great show tonight, Steve! I love your you tube and yours playing skills are killer!
Rock on....

Just a word of advice. If your RG has a trembucker, (edge, Floyd, etc) you need the Seymour Duncan TB-4, same as the JB just spaced for the tremolo bridges.
melissa12010 if i have an ibanez grx20 with strat like tremolo do i need a trembucker or i can use a humbucker?

love the S series! Just a great all around design!
Good to see you back rocking the Seymour duncans dude :D
Love this guys vids!!!
well that's some freaking sweet tone! I love it.
just bought jb sh 4 sam ash a week ago for 79.00 put it in sounds awsome.. thx Dan

great review and tasteful playing! i have emg 81/85 and really wish i went with these. def want them in a guitar with a floyd rose.
sweet !!! i just found my new combination for my RG thanks Steve!!

Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz is the top tier of humbucker combo
It is cool on its own, but depends on the type of fanatics you are playing with, especially if you have extra guitar players in your band...

The SH-2n is the best neck pickup out there. Fine choice. Can't go wrong with Duncans.
This #SermourDuncan JB & Jazz Model Set... WOW! 🤩 This is the #GodsOfRock... THE pickups of choice! 👌🔥
Thanks!! Looking forward to that vid! It's always great to get new toys. Take it easy!!

That Ibanez sounds great! I actually got a really light MIM-strat with a JB in the bridge and a lil' 59 in the neck, which I love. Has the stock single coil in middle position but after watching this I'm gonna replace it with the Custom Stack Plus :D
Gorgomyte for the fretboard.
I've been using it for years, cleans and treats the fretboard and shines the frets all in one pass.
I was thinking about taking a 'Far East' Les Paul and putting in a JB (SH-4) and a Jazz (SH-2) in the neck. I don't think I can really go wrong with that. I had also considered using a Pearly Gates (SHPG) in the bridge instead.

8:57 you know those are THE pickups when he does that face hahaha
I love your videos, theyre always extremely entertaining and insightful. The only thing that's bugging me is the difference in volume between the guitar and your voice. I have to turn the volume up to hear what you say but then get blown away by the killer guitar licks, both in awe and sound level lol... Maybe hang the mike from above you? I don't mind hearing the pick every now and again if it means I can hear you clearly speak. Cheers for the awesome video.
Awesome pick ups dude.
Just revisited this video for the who know how many times. I was thinking you should do a July 4th video with this guitar and pickups and Guitar Rig 5. That would sound awesome.
Thanks for the tip on the mineral oil. I've been using lemon oil for years with no problems but I'll give the mineral oil a try for sure.
Thanks for the feedback though...I know just where I can get a used JB too!
I don't mind the EMG 81 .. it just sounds a tad thin compared to the JB and over compressed ... I just love the overall sound and dynamics of the JB ..it sustains better too.
Try a Custom SH-5 in the bridge, you'll thank me later.
Good tip on the Mineral oil. Duncans sound good!
Mineral oil is good for conditioning newly finished wood surfaces. Not so much for cleaning it. Lemon oil does both.
Great tips and an equally great review! Thanks!
HA! Yeah, it's always nice to get new toys. These pickups are such an improvement over the old ones. I'm definitely liking these a LOT!!
Dam .this is what I have been looking for.. thanks !!
Can't go wrong with a Seymour Duncan JB. If I could only bring one pickup with me to an island, that would be it.
damn what a nice tone and colour.Again nice vid..Bdw off the topic what do you think about Peavey Valveking 100 head i can buy it brand new for 400$ is it worth it?
Love your playing man
Nice job Steve your sounding particularly sharp in this one my guys are up 7-3 as of this writing lol!
Thanks!! That Screamin' Demon always looked pretty cool. New pickups can go a LONG way in improving the tone of a guitar. Rock on!! \m/
Very nice, what's that Distortion u use?
An option for those wanting a slightly tamer bridge pickup; The Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates.
Nice !!! I use the JB'S on alot of my guitars and I have vintage 59 and JB combo in my 76 Standard and there killer... Sounds great bro.
The jb sounds fine but the jazz is too bassy for my taste, i dunno if something is wrong with mine, it does not sound as yours.
btw. What do you recommend for cleaning maple fingerboards?
cheers
+Aaron Rodriguez I put a set in my chibson and both sound amazing... night and day to that guitar... for sure.
How did you get the stack plus to fit? I have the same model guitar and if I were to dig any deeper it’d go through into the trem cavity.
Always love watching your Videos
Any extra noise will be there if I will install same pick up with my Ibanez S770 FM?
I have a H-S body guitar. Slanted Bridge config with a JB on it. Will the STK-6 be a good match?
At 4.1GB, this file took about 25mins to upload. I use a 25/50 FIOS connection, so I get 25Mb on the upload.
Hello. The JB has 16.6k and the Jazz has 7.5k output. How is the volume balance between these pickups?
