You can tell how passionate this man is. Most CEOs, or chiefs of design, etc. that see Jay can never give straight answers or stumble on their answers. This man doesn't even hesitate and knows every inch of the machine. He IS the real deal.
Really like the way Jay is one of "us", he features and promotes American made business, and people who are out there trying to put a plan into action. One of the best TH-cam channels on the web.
Honestly, I think there's nothing wrong to promote American made business, just like there's nothing wrong either to promote business and products from other countries (UK, Italy, Germany, France, Japan, you name it...). There's great products and great companies all over the world now and each ones still have some specificities others don't (Jay did explain that pretty well in an interview video on YT). Because of the local laws, restrictions, taxes, whatever, some manufacturers have to find some alternative solutions, which make them unique. And we should embrace that... So in the end, it's good to be passionate enough to appreciate all kind of varieties and pass on the whole nationalism thing (that could lead to boycott for the wrong reasons). However, anyone should always support his neighbours, and therefor their local business.
Man, oh man, this is one hell of an awesome episode!! It's so laid back & relaxed. I love the tangential digressions that really illuminate the remarkable impact & influence this car had on the entire automotive industry, even in the good ol' US of A. I used to own an '87 3000ZX. A shitload of fun to drive but almost useless in bad weather. The heavy front end and rear drive was often treacherous. I once spun out on black ice on a highway onramp. Did a perfect 360 without hitting a curb. Lucky!! The t-tops were so fucking awesome and are a lost relic of the past...
+mylittleponydude That's a good question and I'll admit that I wasn't trying to be mean or sound cruel but your name.. and Rally Fighter seem like complete opposites Rally fighter sounds mean and fierce and you're tag and "mylittleponydude" just seem so off from each other I pictured a little pony badge on a Rally fighter car or something( in place of where the Rally Fighter letters are) and I was like this is not right my bad it doesn't make much sense but if you ever get a Rally Fighter I hope you fit well in it / with it because they aren't very popular and I would think it would take a certain type of person to have and drive the Rally Fighter. I like these too though an to be honest with your tag and name you do not seem like the mean or fierce type of character . Happy Halloween. :) ( thinks to self what is this mylittlepony... or where does it come from)
Zapcode Knock happy Halloween to you too! and I see what you mean, but there's no way I'd put My Little Pony stuff on a Rally Fighter, not even I would do that
"Whats the speed rating on these tires about 100?" " Nah these are rated for 160 but this thing tops out at 140 so your good" ... INSTANT 180 POWERSLIDE LOL
The only thing is that these tires are rated up to 160 km/h and not mph.. I am searching for off road tires with high speed rating for a long time now but can't find any.

Roger Metzger me too, I live my automotive dreams through Jay Leno ....he will go down in history as one of the greatest car/truck/motorcycle guys of 20th-21st century
I met a guy on the street with one and since I have an FFR I was familiar with them (I believe they did some of the initial engineering work). Very cool ride and well engineered. A little rough on the fit and finish but considering what it's for that's not a real negative. The money goes into the right places.
That Jay Rogers is a class act. Very knowledgeable and not cocky. He also doesn't mind Leno beating up on his ride because he knows that's what it's for. You could tell he was having a blast. Good luck on your endeavors and thanks for your service to our country.
American Made has meant nothing for years, used to mean quality, reliability, made with pride, but then corporate giants turned it into junk and entered in the era of massive re-calls. Local Motors is bringing back "American Made", but without the arrogance and naivety of "we do everything better then everyone else", getting the design done internationally, looks fantastic, hard to beat the American entrepreneur with a dream.
American made can still mean quaility, America is heavilly capitalist which means you get what you pay for. And if nobody pays for quality engineering, they have no reason to go continue whey then can churn out a hundred unreliable shitboxes for the same price and everyone of those will sell.
America actually makes a ton of high-quality stuff. The whole idea that American Made means junk quality is a legacy from the automotive industry's older days when it used to make lousy-quality vehicles until the Japanese competitors began showing them up, and the misconception that America doesn't make anything anymore.
The first mad max movie actually takes place in the year 2000 and then mad max road warrior takes place in 2003 then thunder dome is in 2018 and fury road is still unknown so you could have a car from 2002 and before but not the rally fighter since it came out in 2007
After trying to recall my memory for three years, I finally remember where I saw this form/idea of off-road sportscar before: *VIPER* Series 1 Episode 7 "The Face" -> *The Defender* in 4WD morph!!
May need to look into it, had a lot of fun with Test Drive Off Road Wide Open, haven't played many racing games since then, think a revamp of SEGA Rally is about it, the new Forza looks like a good one though.
Took 1 buddy with me to build my RF. We started with a bare powder coated frame and after only 40hrs of work, it was able to be driven. The only thing left to be fitted is the body doors and interior. The build design and quality of components used is absolutely top notch. Ill be enjoying my RF very soon.
Man, I don´t know where to start praising this car or the spirit of innovation, customer involvement, and quality which imbues Local motors. Has anyone ever seen such exquisite suspension wishbones? The switch to the 9" Ford diff for ease of maintenance serves as an example of the flexibility and rapid development which low-volume manufacturers can offer. Classic all-American success story!
I like the Rally Fighter, and see the work and effort they put into it, but there is no snowballs chance in hell this thing needs to cost $100,000!! its just a 2wd car with a V8 and lots of suspension travel. Factory Five Racing has the GTM supercar kit for $24,995....and Rally Fighter base kit this is all you get Stage 1 Kit - $19,500 (single) Powder coated chassis, billet front arms, rear links, brakes, fuel tank and fuel pump, front hubs and uprights, complete rear-end, rear brakes, and hardware kit.....WTF guys????
well companies like local motors that produce low volume vehicles can't count on selling millions of units like the big three, so they have to include a sizable markup in order to cover their costs.
Well you're right.. if you made a rally car like that on your own in your own garage for yourself.. you should cost you maybe 60Gs.. although he owns a small company, they tend to be having a hard time making a profit. So they got get as much as they can to make another rally, then be able to pay for the company's bill and the emplorers and then be able to feed his family.. try to understand that
Oh I completely understand and I give him the utmost respect, but all that doesn't justify the cost of a $100,000 car I have to go build. I get he has to make money and im completely fine with it..but being in the off road community since high school..it just smells funny to me. When it comes down to it, it's just a 2wd v8 roll cage with long travel suspension, and a body put on top of it. Again I go back to Factory FIve Racing...They have their GTM Super Car kit for $24,999 www.factoryfive.com/order-a-kit/gtm-supercar-complete-kit/ granted its not a baja car...but the principle is the same...It's a car kit you put together.Just explain to me why Rally Fighter is $100,000..if They really wanted to do something great stop catering to people with $100,000 to blow..or at least get more realistic on what they are selling it for. Ok Im over the Rally Fighter..lol I want one..but its a over priced pig with lipstick on it. Anyone that reads this can buy and build something equal to or better than the Rally Fighter for $30k and it be 4wd.
I don't disagree, but it's a free market. If LM can sell them for $99K and make money and grow the business then who's business is it to argue? Time will tell if they made the right choice. That being said I understand the resentment. I can not afford to purchase this car. Even if I could I would not spend that much money on a vehicle, that's just me. I do wish I could buy one as this is a beautiful vehicle. However I must bow to the open and free market. If you can start a company to fill a lower cost market space go for it. Obviously there is money to be made.
Oh I totally agree with you William :) But at the same time..I just couldn't sleep at night knowing that I offered a product that's value was not equal its selling price. Oh btw I purchased a full custom tube chassis for $4,500 with powder coat. The game is on..lol
I FIRST SAW ONE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET. I THOUGHT IT WAS A WELL DONE PROJECT VEHICLE THAT SOMEONE HAD DONE THEM SELF. YOU KNOW, WHEN AN EL CAMINO BODY IS PUT ON A NEW FULL SIZE 4X4 TRUCK CHASSIS. I SAW NO IMPERFECTIONS AT ALL. THIS VEHICLE IS A VERY IMPRESSIVE SIGHT. IT IN NO WAY BLENDS INTO ANYTHING ELSE ON THE ROAD. MUCH LARGER IN REAL LIFE THAN SHOWS ON THE VIDEO. IT DEFINITELY IS A BEAST.
Great machine! Not an off-road head myself, but this baby is interesting and the company concept is very appealing! Best of luck with the endeavor! Thanks for another great episode Jay!
Nice to see Jay and Jay together. I went to a number of early meetings and events at their original site in Wareham, Mass. Hope work for Jay Rogers because this was os new a different that working for dealers. But no place for a warranty administrator at the time.
for everyone complaining oh it's 99k that's too expensive. that 99k gets you the room and board while your building the car on top of getting the car... and wouldn't you pay alittle extra knowing exactly how the car was built?? I would and how many people can say yeah I but that car from the ground up that's my car. and they don't just come in plain colors go on the Web site and check out all of the paint schemes you can get on this thing
You're correct, i should have watched what i said. I meant to say he did a good job taking the build under his belt.. He didn't just want a cool car and had a dozen people making it. Seems like he took the time to go through every nut and bolt (and aftermarket part) to create a machine to his wants. He deserves to be proud
It`s a great thing to see a new company set up in these bad economic times, and seem to be doing well! The concept of this company seems a refreshing way of going about creating a business. I hope it goes from strength to strength!
A SSgt in the AF is an E-5. I'm an E-5 in the Navy and our pay is the same between branches, so unless the guy saved up every cent of his paycheck, it'd still take 5 years salary (~$2500 a month) to afford that and SRBs (selective re-enlistment bonuses) aren't that much with only certain MOSs offering them.
Married a doctor? Parents died and left him some money? Has a second job and works hard? Good credit rating? Flips cars, maybe houses? All kinds of ways, plus 100K isn't really that much money these days.
I've built a whole lottta cars in my life, (former car designer) as well as anything and everything with wheels, and or an engine. Being a designer, engineer, fabricator, and sculptor. I can see myself partaking in this sorta process!
Close but no cigar. He is NOT wearing a military uniform. There is no rank on his flight suit, and it wouldn't have "LM" on it. Jay Rogers was a Infantry Company Commander, they don't wear flight suit. Usually only Flight personnel wearing them.
+catfish552 Nah, that's pretty common to say codename instead the alphabet. Where I work, employees are taught to use codename instead of alphabet, this helps a lot to avoid misspelling of names through phone communication since I was in marketing department. Seems like some other offices use this method too. That or simply everyone on my office are covert ops.
I'm all for American made and this thing is beautiful, but $100k? Parts are all recycled, the chassis is the only thing original, and the designs were even created by someone else. On top of it all It's not preassembled. You gain a lot more pride from building your own car but the price should reflect all of these factors. It's a shame they aren't more attainable, I would love to own one.
The name of the product designing and development process firms like Local Motors employ is called as "Customer Co-creation". This vehicle right here has been designed and developed using this technique.
15:50 Haha this thing _is_ pretty cool. I like that if one just looks from the bottom of the side window line upward, thing looks like a low, sleek and sexy sports car. Then zoom out and see the off-road capability! Neat!
Probably the real car. I think I saw them being used in the last Transformers movie before they were in the game. Dont waste your money in GTA. $750,000 for an offraod vehicle that isnt 4 wheel drive and the roof lights dont even work.
this car was also in forza horizon 2 before the transformers movie. but yes. the brawler was a disappointment. good general offroader even as RWD. but so are most cars in that game.
So they get a community to design it (they don't pay anyone), they build it and sell it for profit, AND...the owner has to put some time into actually building it (tighten a few bolts) so it can be registered as a kit car (Local Motors doesn't have to deal with liability issues). Something smells.
Actually the guy that designed it gets royalties on every sale. And it would be impossible for them to be able to get it registered as a normal car. NHTSA requires a fleet of them to crash in various ways. The overheads are massive.
sambassmanstoner Don't be naive. They paid the guy $20K as a prize for winning the body design competition. That's it. They would have had to pay their in house designers a lot more than that. This company lures in young people to contribute their ideas (intellectual property) for free and they label it as "collaboration". It's a clever way to get others to do the work for you but its wrong.
James Crud i would say , its also a possible spring board for someone who isnt in the auto industry looking for recognition or adding to your portfolio.
James Crud " but its wrong." Why is it wrong? you got paid 20k and got credibility as a designer. It goes well on your portfolio. Opportunities like these are fantastic for people trying to get into design industries. When videogame companies hold competitions for "design a weapon" where the person does all the work and gets paid a token amount is that wrong? or is it a fantastic opportunity to do something youre are passionate about and have your name in game?
It's my car. I was a SSgt in the Air Force, I'm now working in Iraq as a civilian contractor. Same job, but enough money to afford this car. It's been my goal since I first discovered Local-Motors from the 2009 SEMA show.
What sort of Marine turns up without shaving first??? THIS is what Marines should be driving in Aghanistan or where ever its at. 30 of these instead of 5 Hummers.
This man knows his shit. Great detailed explanation of the cars. And he has a successful company. Good for him.
You can tell how passionate this man is. Most CEOs, or chiefs of design, etc. that see Jay can never give straight answers or stumble on their answers. This man doesn't even hesitate and knows every inch of the machine. He IS the real deal.

The best part is the customer builds the car! It builds a perspective of respect there for the build and the customer knows there car inside and out!
Saw one of these cruising through an apartment complex at night in Arizona. It was matte black and zipped right over those annoying parking lot speed bumps as if it wasn't even there. I never found out what my dream car was called until now! Thanks Jay!!
I love how casual Jay is about handbrake turns during these drives, it's awesome!!

A little rough on the fit and finish but considering what it's for that's not a real negative. The money goes into the right places.
This is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. How am I just now learning about this? Bring this back!
I saw one on the highway in flat black, looked insane.
That is so freaking awesome!
Insert heavy breathing as soon as I saw the Rally Fighter... no exaggeration.
"Honey, I'm going to a TV show tomorrow. Have you seen my overalls?"

It`s a great thing to see a new company set up in these bad economic times, and seem to be doing well! The concept of this company seems a refreshing way of going about creating a business.
I hope it goes from strength to strength!
Did I hear him correctly when he said an Air Force SSgt owns one of these $100k vehicles. Wonder how he pulled that one off.
re enlistment bonus
A SSgt in the AF is an E-5. I'm an E-5 in the Navy and our pay is the same between branches, so unless the guy saved up every cent of his paycheck, it'd still take 5 years salary (~$2500 a month) to afford that and SRBs (selective re-enlistment bonuses) aren't that much with only certain MOSs offering them.
Married a doctor? Parents died and left him some money? Has a second job and works hard? Good credit rating? Flips cars, maybe houses? All kinds of ways, plus 100K isn't really that much money these days.
The guy probably isn't currently enlisted. He is probably a retired staff Sargent but didn't bother to clarify it for the sake of efficiency.
Not to mention the flashy paint job. That HAD to cost extra.
Just wow. Te company, its mission, and cars are just awesome! What a cool, intelligent, innovative dude jay rogers is!
Looks like a Javelin.
Thank you! Yeah, Javelin with a lot of Matador, especially the roof line.
Me: I don't like sport cars.
Me after seeing this car in F8: I'm in love.
Jay, please no more music over the videos. Engine noise is the only music we want to hear.
I've built a whole lottta cars in my life, (former car designer) as well as anything and everything with wheels, and or an engine. Being a designer, engineer, fabricator, and sculptor. I can see myself partaking in this sorta process!
The clearance on the front lids left side seems to differ dramatically from that on the right side :(
Looks like an Off Road Sports Car. I love it.
You can tell he's military because he says "Delta" instead of "D", like a normal person would.
Or the fact that he is still wearing his uniform
Envinite I work on the water with barges and we use codenames on occasion. where do you work?
swalling22 BMW retail. Codename is used commonly in office jobs more than people think.
I like the way this car turns.... wow!!! this is a great initiative
lol why is he wearing a full Marine pilot jumpsuit hahahahaha
AtomicCheesegod why not
Thanks Jay, I was wondering about this company, glad to see they're doing well.
Hopefully Top Gear will survive so Richard Hammond can get all giddy driving one of these.
Anonymau5 chris evans is replacing jezza isnt he?
Claude Speed He is, Richard and James are also leaving Top Gear. I made that post long before we know Jeremy was getting canned.
That would be cool
They did have one of these on Top Gear US, but not really the same lol
Thanks Jay, great video, love that you support small American motor companies.
This is the hottest car :) I want one.
Reminds me of a full sized 1 to 1 radio controlled car. This is a brilliant concept and I wish them nothing but success
Honda civic EG door handle :)
Congrats, mate. You own one of the coolest cars I have ever seen.
I wanna see this vs a bowler
Seen both ceo and one of the examples today on the street. Amazing is not even a word to describe this beast. Its fucking awesome
+Pd Voorheis It's not 100K, just 99K.
Actually it's 715000
You are from gta arent you...
Undercover Wookiee
gta? never heard of that place. I live in san andreas.
The parts are externally-sourced, not "recycled" you goofball.
The name of the product designing and development process firms like Local Motors employ is called as "Customer Co-creation". This vehicle right here has been designed and developed using this technique.
I'm not a car person at all but I want a Rally Fighter so gorram bad. like serious 7 sins lust for this thing. *sigh*
DUDE!!!!! No bull I'm a truck driver and I'm parked right next door to this place at the loves in Arizona crazy stuff man!!!
Coil Brawler !!! GTAV
Anderson Luiz stfu
No its a LM Rally Fighter.
15:50 Haha this thing _is_ pretty cool. I like that if one just looks from the bottom of the side window line upward, thing looks like a low, sleek and sexy sports car. Then zoom out and see the off-road capability! Neat!
GTA V Brawler real life counterpart found
yup
wait WTF did this car or the GTA car come first? That's like identical....
BigMobe lol yeah it was around in real life 1st
This car is BRILLIANT, I love it!
Why is this guy wearing pyjama's?
Because it's fucking America and he can wear what ever the fuck he wants.
Ah, thanks to clarify this in such eloquent language :-)
It's called a flight suit.
Greet if my eloquent language offends you sounds like personal fucking problem pal.
mike oldson
Waw, I'm getting smarter by the minute :-)
Mr. Rogers is a really good speaker. Please let him return more often to the shop. And ask him to bring more crazy cool stuff off course :)
Not impossible to flip it. Not sure about the roll now.
This thing is just amazing, the coolest offroader ever
Anyone else here because of GTA
Yep
Seb baker Same
Yep lmao
yeah ...
yeah x)
Love the rally fighter with the WWII paint job in the back ground.
Transformers brought me here
My favorite on his show!
it has a body like a jaguar
Maybe some day I'll have a good enough job or get famous and get one of these myself! Probably not, but a man can dream!
Sure does smell. And it smells great to me.
James Crud " but its wrong."
Why is it wrong? you got paid 20k and got credibility as a designer.
EAS brother!
A FORMER Marine can show up anywhere he wants without shaving.
06Duramax97Powerstroke sweet as, I don't really have much opinion on that after a bit of consideration.
Semper fi, my guy!
