2 Questions, one, if it idles at 60 miles an hour, are you constantly riding the breaks in town? and two, Did you intend for it to look like a Cadillac Concept Car? 'Cuz it kinda does, a lot.
He explains that it was a GM design team. If you know anything about the car industry, you would know GM is the parent company to Cadillac. Maybe I just know that because I’m from Michigan...
Why can't the turbine generate electricity so it can run at a set rpm to produce a set range of voltage without ever needing to touch a torque converter or clutch or axles. Then you won't need such hefty brakes since there is a physical disconnect between electric hub motors in the wheels and the engine itself.
yes yuo're absolutely right, there're jet microturbines from Capsone, Bladon Jets, and maybe others. And they already made such cars! look for Jaguar c-x75 and CMT-380
Lickmybarrel I second that. I've wondered about this type of power ever since my air force firefighter days and had to learn about the emergency shutdown procedures on an F-16. If the engine flames out, they have an emergency power unit which is a very small turbine engine that produces a butt-load of electricity to control the servos, lights, gauges, tail hook, brakes, etc. Why not a small turbine running on peanut oil to direct drive at all four wheels?
I wonder when the last time he drove it was? Seems like it's destined to be a garage queen with all its quirks. But god it's a gorgeous car inside and out 👍
I'd really like to see a turbine-powered hybrid car using 4 high output electric motors and a 25KWh battery pack mediating power delivery. That way the turbine can run at optimum efficiency, and you get the instant power delivery of the electric motors. Jaguar did something similar with the CX-100, but it never went anywhere.
The cars hp output is a little overkill too. You have to much power and need to slow down the turbine some how so it don't burn out clutches or plates in the transmission.
I don't see why they didn't use a CVT or hydrolic pump and motors to drive the car, heavy machinery use setups like that and they run at full rpm all day.
I was thinking that too. Have the turbine run a generator while the wheels have in wheel / hub motors. One would have the turbine at constant speed and have instant torque to the wheels. I think there are some current sports cars that have (or similar to) that arrangement.
I cant believe I missed this video. This deserves a lot more views, its such a cool concept - its not commercially viable and its not meant to be but its such a great project. You'll need a large trunk for a muffler! Like the Chrysler turbine car has ! One of the only ways your going to quit that baby down! WOOW REAL COOL! J, Another national treasure!
martyisabeliever Because the engine still produces a great deal of power when it's "idling", and when you hold hold the car stationary with the brakes, all that power has to go somewhere. So it can only get wasted as heat in the the torque converter, a bit like riding the clutch with the handbrake on.
ManWithBeard1990 After the gear reduction from the turbine to torque converter.. Can you imagine the torque multiplier. 48k RPM and 750HP down to i think they said 6k... charlesvan13 I think the point he is trying to make is that Vista sucks and crashes more so than the other Microsoft OS. So if the car runs via Vista, the car will crash sooner than later, ending in death for the driver.
No. Not because people are open to new and sometimes weird business. It's because Americans think, dream and dare to do things that are nothing short of EPIC.
Well, despite all the critics out there I like the idea & design. Yes, the front looks like a Cadi so what? Cadi's are a sharp looking car. I would really like to see how a car like this drives on the Autobahn. No idea what top speed would be but, you would probably have a hard time keeping it on the road or ground at over 300+ mph. Thank Jay for showing us all your amazing toys & ideas. Wish I could get a peek in the garage. It's just like a candy shop.
Well, the loudness of a driving car is caused by several things: drag, friction of the tyres, engine- and exhaustsounds. A car passing you at the Autobahn is very loud, because of high drag, friction and enginerevs. but the same car must not excell certain noise limits at a velocity of say 32mph. The turbine of Jay's car is already very loud at low speeds, which violates the noiselimits any car has to meet to be road legal.
tornoutlaw- Ok, I have walked by Lambo's so loud they made my ears ring. Jay's jet engine car is California legal to drive. Given that CA is more restrictive than other US states that says something. CHP officers were looking the car when Jay parked it and did not complain or write him a ticket for noise. So, this car appears not to be unbearable to be near.
jdmdealers California does in fact have certain exemptions for experimental, special construction vehicles, alternative fueled vehicles and vehicle that do not use internal combustion engines... Since Jay constructed a 100% from new car, it could apply for one or more of these exemptions... and operate at a much higher decibel output than would be legal for a new car sold to the public in California... Case in point, last year I completed a vehicle under California's "Special Construction" permits, It is registered as a brand new 2014 car... but because of the specific combination of components used in its construction... it is exempt from all smog equipment or testing, noise control limits, bumper requirements, airbags, and certain lighting equipment.
Why not run a wet clutch (oil bathed, like a motorcycle) to a CVT transmission? Use drivetrain oil coolers to preheat the fuel/air mix for the turbine to improve fuel efficiency and reduce ignition temperatures. A KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) flywheel as a brake assist connected to a front differential separate from the rear drivetrain could be used for AWD assist to remove the vagueness from a less direct drivetrain. Probably more rapidly spinning metal than you'd want around you.... but this car is an engineers dream.
Jay may have the tools but that's kind too ambious, don't you think? What I mean is that Jay may have only been getting fun and not trying to actually build a true car with a jet engine.
Thank You Jay for living our dreams... Hey can you please set up microphones near the exhaust and a camera on the gauges for every car. Right when you say "Lets go for a ride" then start them. Then we can hear the exhaust sound and get the full picture. That would make this perfect show, perfect ;)
If it had to be a Microsoft system I would have rather had XP. Hopefully by now they've upgraded to Win7 (or Win8 only IF they wrote drivers for such a specialized system).
Stick with Microsoft (or ANY current system) guarantees in a few years' time the car wont be able to run on any street. Why? Because MS will do an upgrade that will disable the car's systems. Sorry - you have to update your car before it can run on the streets. Dont believe me? Look at XP and Chromecast. Look at XP and AVG. Many other examples where some company decides, at a whim, to make YOUR hardware inoperative. Just because they can. Jay: Design your own systems. That way, even when the car is a vintage, it will still run
I recall the Chrysler Turbine car, an example of which Jay also owns, used a HUGE air filter in the front behind the grille, which served to help muffle the enormous amount of intake noise. On Jay's EcoJet they were using just the engine maker's filter element, which went around the engine and likely had much less muffling effect on the incoming air.
If soybean oil were widely used as a fuel for vehicles, it would raise the price of soybeans, an essential foodstuff. Is that a desirable outcome? I think not. For the same reason, ethanol is dumb.
+sojutime Are you serious? Our insane reliance on fuels that are destroying the possibility of a decent future for humanity and much of the complex life forms on this planet is a bit of a larger concern than the possible rise in the price of soy. If we were able to replace most of our oil consumption with soy, it would obviously be a huge victory for humanity. Compared with the devastating downsides of both the supplying, and consumption of fossil fuels, having to devote more land to soy would be infinitely better, and a great cause for celebration. Aside from the little matter that our future survival is in serious danger from a problem switching to soy for car fuel would massively help alleviate, if you're concerned (as we all should be), with everyone being able to afford to eat decently, then you ought to be overjoyed at the idea of replacing oil with soy, since a huge part of the cost of food is the fuel to produce and get it to market. I am a vegetarian who eats my share of soy, and if the price doubles, it will raise my food bill by less than $4 a week. The droughts oil is causing has already raised it more than that.
+Greg Vinson you may want to consider that replacing all of our oil with soy would require more than just a little bit of land I have not actually looked at what it would require but I know that with ethanol or corn that would require something in the neighborhood of 70% all of the land in the United States of America that's not too produce all of the corn we would need just replace the gasoline that we use I agree that we need to find alternative fuel sources but even more than that we need to look at realistically what is possible
+sojutime LOL Oil is forever right? Batteries a great right? Oh wait.... NO. You want to eat my fuel then get in the fucking market and put up your money for it.
***** that's all well and good for when you have hundreds of thousands of people starving to death because you want to drive your fancy car and feel good about yourself they're going to have a real big problem with that
Adam Harr You're still dismissing the number one problem facing humanity today; the alarming rate at which climate change is happening. If we don't get a handle on that, you can't imagine the famines and suffering which will be our legacy to the people of the near future. It is beyond ridiculous to dismiss the relatively benign (compared to oil extraction, transportation, and consumption), switch to a fuel which can be grown in the form of a renewable crop. I don't know where you got your estimate of the land needed to grow it, but it is insanely inflated, and even if it were true, would still be a much more manageable problem than the horrific legacy of oil addiction.

Why would T.C get hot??? Whats your thinking.
martyisabeliever Because the engine still produces a great deal of power when it's "idling", and when you hold hold the car stationary with the brakes, all that power has to go somewhere. So it can only get wasted as heat in the the torque converter, a bit like riding the clutch with the handbrake on.
So the fluid used in the turbine of the T.C./ and within the transmission is pumped through the trans then out to an external fluid to air cooler.

+tornoutlaw I guess you have never been stopped on the side of the Autobahn when a car goes by at 180mph?
Any updates on this beast?
they are adding thrust reversers I guess. Brakes no good.
Humanity undervalues the technological advancements that the zip tie has facilitated. Truly remarkable.
Really awesome man!! It looks very modern and its eco, perfect!
No poor bikers were vaporized by exhaust gases in the making of this video.
Looks like a Cadillac cien
looks a bit like a cadilac
Cadillac Ciel eco friendly version. Don't look comparable to a corvette
the cars badge looks like Acura
yes it does!
I thought that it looked like the Cadillac cien concept from a few years ago
very much!
Jay is one of the great creatures of habit of our time.
Having a car designed and built just for you……the ultimate!
Jay congratulations on your 4th term as the President of The More Money Than Brains Club. I'm glad that your Election went off with out a hitch.
Ah are you all tuckered out and a little grumpy because you don't have a toy like Jay. Poor little guy
This car was started way before those were popular enough to build in high-power applications.
cvt doesn't work well in high powered aplications plus when that belt fails oooh boy!
Jay may have the tools but that's kind too ambious, don't you think? What I mean is that Jay may have only been getting fun and not trying to actually build a true car with a jet engine.
Looks like a copy of a Cadillac cien at the front
+D Maych Wat?? you think the cien isnt rare!
the same guys that worked on that worked on this
Explains it all ,thanks.
yeah, it does
and it will never hit the road, just like the Cien
He owns as jet car....Jay, you are my hero
That totally has Ed Welburns thumb print on that design!! Outstanding!!!!
sounds like a vacuum cleaner
More like one hundred vacuum cleaners.
Yeah, so do all jets.
So ya, not sure how he is gonna get to be quiet, at least on the outside.
what kind of 1980's vacuum are you using, definitely not a dyson
Because Jets and vacuums are kinda....similar...yknow?
You were concerned about this car not creating all types of pollution, but you couldnt keep it from creating noise pollution.
+Ricovali Rock & Roll ain't no noise pollution. But then again, it isn't WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSHHHHHHHH either...
Chrysler turbine was quieter, right?
Yes it was. It was more sophisticated in terms of trying to put a gas turbine on the road. The gas turbine in the ecojet is straight from a helicopter
This one of the best videos in the JLG series. WOW! Jay builds his own jet car! Must be nice.
Jay. I respect the way you give credit to, the people', that work with you.
Cadillac + Koeniggsegg + Rimac=
Cadiliggsemac?
traxfish exactly
love the car, but vista, really?
3:19 Zippers on the car scratching the paint . . . I hate when people do that!
We need a 2023 proper Jay Lenos garage on this bad boy
Thank You Jay for living our dreams...
Hey can you please set up microphones near the exhaust and a camera on the gauges for every car. Right when you say "Lets go for a ride" then start them. Then we can hear the exhaust sound and get the full picture. That would make this perfect show, perfect ;)
lol this car sounded great until microsoft put vista in it
Windows Vista? Whelp Leno's fucked, surprised he hasn't crashed it already lol.
everything but the sound is good
its a jet car... put a Civic fart can on it.
Humans eventually will reach a breaking point, and cars like this will be the way forward. I applaud the design team!
I find it so fascinating running motorcycles and cars with a turbine engine is just absolutely insane
About as useful as non-alcoholic beer, but cool nonetheless.
I doubt any super car could be considered useful. they are usually just pure fantasy.
VISTA?
you spent all that money on that car and they gave you VISTA?????
Dyson vacuum cleaner year 2057
I recall the Chrysler Turbine car, an example of which Jay also owns, used a HUGE air filter in the front behind the grille, which served to help muffle the enormous amount of intake noise. On Jay's EcoJet they were using just the engine maker's filter element, which went around the engine and likely had much less muffling effect on the incoming air.
Beautiful eye catching design, woefully impractical.
It looks like a Cadillac
Really cheapens the whole thing imo.
I was thinking that too. It was designed by GM which could explain why it is similar. They do use Corvette parts.
I don't know where you got your estimate of the land needed to grow it, but it is insanely inflated, and even if it were true, would still be a much more manageable problem than the horrific legacy of oil addiction.
i think its too noisy
That's freaking COOL!! GOOD JOB JAY!! Modern version of the Chrysler Turbine.
A cross between a Cadillac version of a Corvette and a Corvette with a jet engine propel J Leno’s car of the future
