Though a lot more ambitious than The First Glass Beach Album, plastic death doesn't see progress on all fronts.

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
Hey, Fantano, do you mind rereviewing it again, and make a new apology video with real tears, please?
OH SHIT, THESE LIKES ARE FAST 💀
JQHHDHHFHBWBFB
Commatose gotta be your contender for "worst choice for least favorite track" ever
he always chooses the best track as his least favorite istg
People just fall for "long song = good" all the time lol
@@RB-.- every single section is a banger, negative xp was right
@@aer0plane_ i found the 2nd half to be totally unnecessary & dull. the first 4 minutes are special but they got caught up in trying to make an epic Car Seat Headrest style odyssey and should’ve just quit while they were ahead.
@@RB-.- Fair opinion actually
Commatose least fav track must be one of the worst opinions in recent memory

If this album was called "The Second Glass Beach Album" he would have given it a 10.
Disappointed it wasn't tbh
@@XavIsOnline it'd be funny but i think i'd think it's stupid in hindsight.
Melon is the Glass Beach, because I see right through him.
i wish they did, but i'm glad they didn't.
@@OwochiiI'm sure they probably had a round table discussion like "alright guys I know we should take music seriously and give this album a proper name but consider this; it'd be really funny"
If it was Glass Death - Plastic Beach, you would’ve gave it a 9/10
I was gonna say that 😞
Rillaz already
Nah we would’ve given it a seven then reduxed it into a 9

the CIA is an unbelievable track for me personally, the hook is so catchy and the back end of it is one of the punchiest things I've heard in a long time
that hook has stuck been in my head for MONTHS and i’m totally cool with it
Totally agree
The heavier part at the end is good on it’s own but it’s a cheesy and out of nowhere transition. Same with slip under the door
I haven't stopped singing "You're my panopticon, with your radars always on" since that track dropped.
i don't enjoy the album that much but even i love the CIA, the vocals on this one at least are hella catchy
Kind of insane how the more you listened, the more you disliked it. I kind of agreed with you on the vocals at first, except the more I listened to this album, the more I grew to appreciate them
The vocals aren't going to get better for many of us. Trust me, I tried a few times and I found it incredibly annoying to listen to this dude.

HARD disagree Anthony. This is honestly a major improvement from their debut, and I honestly love the prog-rock influences on this record.
are u being honest tho
See I just don't get how you could think that, the vocals are just so wack
@@Jdn4722 yes
I preferred their first one tbh. It's just too different from what they did on the first one
@@duckduckgoose8049its just a different product with a completely different sound. As a certified first album hater, this may be my favourite album of all time.
kinda shocked about this one to be fair. he seemed to really enjoy it on stream. i have a feeling this one will end up being a grower for tony
My first favorite record of the year. A 9.5 if not a 10 for me. Unfamiliar with these guys before but the diversity of sound, wonderfully catchy songwriting, fantastic instrumentation and crisp, bouncy production absolutely wowed me. Give it a spin I say folks!
you should check out the first one if you haven’t, so much better in my opinion but glad you enjoyed it
Same here, I hadn't heard of them ever and this album surprised me a lot
As close to a 10 as it can get for me, reminds me loooot of Dismemberment Plan but I might like this even more
it caught me off guard in the very best way
I definitely disagree with your assessment on the vocals not being fitting with the rest of the music. The submerged, sometimes hard to decipher vocals feel incredibly intentional with the theming of the record, and it makes the moments where they do cut through incredibly impactful and catching. Good review, but I disagree, and think the album does in fact improve on pretty much every front from their first record.
Songwriting, lyrics, vocals, passion & uniqueness all in favor of the debut.
@@RB-.- ambition, versatility, instrumentation, production, song structure in favor of this one IMO
For real also I know u from Twitter lmao
thanks for writing this comment so I didn’t have to
@@RB-.-there's so much unique shit in terms of lyrics and passion here. It's just deeper into the ocean than the previous. Darker and more intense. Different but not worse
i strongly disagree with your analysis. the first glass beach album had a much greater focus on the lyrics, where as this one uses lyrics to add texture to the song while using more abstracted language. instead of having strong literal narratives in the songs like in bedroom community, glass beach, cold weather, and yoshi's island, plastic death focuses much more on the lyrics being poetic and metaphorical since they're no longer the focus of the tracks. i can't hear most of the words j's singing, but i still think her voice adds important texture to the songs
wrong it’s a 10
No
Nah a low 8, but it’s great.
Not a 10, but DEFINITELY not a 6!
@@CasperLikesMusic-kw3jj I gave it a 3 / 10.

Rare Animal, being just "fine," confirms everything I thought over the years about Tony not being a Midwest Emo boy. This makes me very, VERY sad!

I agree with him on CD. Good album but has some clear flaws that take away from the listening experience.
If this album was called "To comm a tose", he would've given this album a 0/10.
coming back to say L + ratio
This is the MBDTF rating but for indie rock kids
if the album was called "To Plastic a Death" he woulda gave it a 10
Reading the lyrics along to "coelcanth" really hit me in the feels when I started the album. Not to sound too apologist but if you listen to the vocals as more of a vessel for the poetry on this record, it honestly lands better. However, while I was very impressed with the lyrical ambition, i can agree that you can occasionally sense a lost sense of direction within the songs. Regardless, what a fun journey. Felt like a loveable artsy film that isn't too up its own ass.
Dude i don’t even like glass beach, god knows i hate their car seat headrest cover, but this was a really solid album
as a glass beach fan I hate their beach life in death cover ima b honest
people hate that cover wayyyy too much
That cover is one of their worst, lol
i liked that cover when i first listened to it because it was my first time listening to beach life in death, which is a phenomenal song, but after listening to the original i don't like the cover anymore
Melon Man 🤝 Giving album of the year contenders from queer artists a 6/10
A third redux on Plastic Beach? Man this year is full of surprises

ANTHONY LOOK OUT!
ANTHONY NO!!!!!! GET OUT OF THE ROAD!!!! ANTHONYYYY!!!!!
I saw this coming with how he talked about Cosmic Thrill Seekers by PDaddy. He liked the concept and songwriting of CTS but something about a certain type of emo vocals puts the melon out- And yet, those type of shrill, shrieking voice types really resonate w/ me. That voice texture is almost like a visceral release of emotion that I truly enjoy.
this is album of the year so far
Until The Smile album drops in less than two hours
DOA better imo
No this is much better than the Smile record IMO
ive never heard of this album or band, ive never listened to them, and i havent even watched the review, but i can already tell by the dislikes that i should just leave one too and move on

I agree with him. The singing is absolutely awful and highly irritating.

@@capkronos00same. Barely finished the album cause of it
I'm surprised the vocals were an issue! I thought J's vocals were such a good fit and I was so surprised and impressed with their screaming! J was one of the first people that taught me that the character of one's voice is so much more important than the quality, and I definitely think that's still true, but I was consistently impressed with how much J's singing had improved over the years! I guess it just wasn't Anthony's cup of tea, oh well *shrugs*
Glass Beach forever!
hugest melon L of 2024 and it's only January oof
Initially agree with this assessment. I think I was expecting it to be so much more like the 1st album that it threw me off and made me feel like it wasn't as good as their first album. On a second listen through a week later I'm liking a lot more than the initial listen through.
sadly this album was not named "to pimp a hood's hottest plastic death"
would have been easy 10
I’m having Vietnam flashbacks to his review of Currents by Tame Impala
Oh my god kill me now. I’ll be honest, I’ll never forget him giving “Instant Gratification” a 1/10. Still love it personally.
I didn't love Glass Beach's first LP, but this one was my favourite album thusfar this year! I don't LOVE the vocals but found them alright and I loved plastic death's arty-prog passages. I'm so into this album I might let my dog listen to it!
If the album was called “to pimp a plastic death to be kind”, you would have given it a 10
you would've given it a 10 if it was called the second glass beach album
the trend of this man picking the second best track on an album and calling it his least favorite will never die huh
He did this with tfgba too it was absolutely devastating
no mention of the cia is insane to me, it’s been stuck in my head since i heard it
He talked about it when it dropped in weekly roundup, listed it as one of the hottest tracks of the week so I’m shocked it’s not in his favorites for this album
@@cartierr6717 i was shocked too, it’s a clear highlight for me
@@vfd10 same, second favorite song after commatose which he put as his least favorite😭😭
I would've rated this closer to a decent 7. I think Classic J and the band really tried something new here and with the exception of the mumbled vocals, I think they get a lot done right. I really enjoyed the progressive nature of a lot of the tracks and feel like the stylistic switch ups are going to open a lot of doors for them in the future. The drumming is fantastic and I agree that Puppy is easily the stand out here. Very late 90s Goo Goo Dolls influenced chorus with that emo twinge really makes it fly. To me, it would've been so easy to see them double dip back into the theater kid emo of TFGBA, but they didn't and I respect what they did, even if it had holes.
Looking forward to the new Cheekface review.
mods, subject him to eldritch horrors beyond our comprehension.
On paper, this is an album I should’ve LOVED, but I just can’t get past the monotonous moaned vocals. To me, his delivery ranges from silly to downright awful

@@OhHeyCreeper A trans woman? I mean I thought it was a dude too.
@@capkronos00 j uses she/they pronouns
@@OhHeyCreeper OK I had no clue. I was just going by the vocals.
Disagreed with like half of this review (I thought the album was a 9/10) but at least you referenced the similarity to Kayo Dot/Toby Driver/maudlin of the Well, which is actually part of why I liked this album so much.
Top tier fantano yap session
Was this the band that was Casio Dad before? I absolutely love He's Not With Us Anymore
yes
turn that 6 upside down its a 9 now 👁️👄👁️
im more of a prog rock guy than an emo guy so i loved the direction they went with this album vocally lol.
I’m definitely the opposite, which is why I feel like I’m struggling to really get into this album, but I really appreciate that they are trying something different, even if I’m more a fan of their older style (including the Casio Dad stuff)
LIGHT 6????? Come on man 😭😭 this shit a 10
I respect this album far more than I enjoy it
I waited so much for this album so NO I DON’T CARE ABOUT YOUR OPINION
I kind of understand where you're coming from bc I was kind of underwhelmed by J's change of style on their vocals and production. But after a time, it just all came together and made sense. Just like Thom Yorke's vocals in my opinion, I used to think they were boring and sleep inducing lol. But when I understood what Radiohead was about and what they were trying to bring to the table, I started to appreciate it and see how much it added to the whole thing. Hope it grows on you over time, fantastic album imo and a hard contender for aoty already.
j uses she/they pronouns btw! just so you know
@@Weaverlord OMG I THOUGHT I HAD FIXED IT SORRY

Cover art's cool tho
they never miss with cover art haha
Mods can we ban this guy
Glass “beach” - plastic “death”
Is that a fucking car seat headrest reference
they made a cover of beach life in death y'know
it probably is
I think the Yorke and Toledo influence on the vocals left me feeling kneecapped compared to the vocal performances on LP1.
The gays will not like this one, fantano. Be prepared.
This album sometimes reminds me of that Weatherglow EP from a couple years back.
both fourth wave emo
I get commenters liking this one but i don't get how you can like it more than their first one, their first one was so peak
Melon can't just dock 4 points because there is glass on the beach
If Anthony ever meets me in the street and asks me for his worst take I’ll tell him that it’s this
yeah gotta disagree with u melon boi here , this album is such a truly excellent follow up to their debut. probably one of the most innovative albums ive ever that still maintains being fun and listenable in awhile.
Knowing the band's official interviews/reasoning for their lyrics, this review actually makes a lot of sense. I can see how it isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the lyrics took an intentional turn from literal and comprehensible to a more vague and abstract presentation that focuses on deriving the most emotion instead. While it's generally harder to understand fully, I feel like it's easier to just feel through the music.
Oh boy i can't wait for Melonhead to Butcher the Wall of Eyes review as well
Ah yes, this record is clearly worse than lil pumps album from a while back.
This is one of the worst fantano reviews tbh I think the vocals are such an improvement over there last album and that being his main criticism I just don’t get
Once again, im glad im not the only one who found this highly acclaimed album to be not that great.
This is one of the biggest improvements ive seen a band make after an already incredible album. I dont think ive ever disagreed with you more. That being said if this album was called plastic death grips you would have given it a 10
You will never be forgiven
If classic j died again you would have given this a 10
i agree with the lyrics not being clear enough at times taking away from the catchyness but you gotta understand that atleast for this band the vocals are apart of the instrumental, its not just something laid on top of a track. is that weird to say? idrk. but thats the vibe i got from quite a few songs
yeah j said on twitter the muddy vocals were intentional to convey certain feelings and themes
if it was called glass store by death beach you would rate it a 9/10
You disliked commatose just because there’s a fart at 6:47?
Yeah he's right y'all. It's a mess of an outcome with some really solid ideas
the like dislike ratio lmao. i thought this album was amazing but damn he articulated his opinion fairly well and 6/10 ain't even bad. CHILL
I saw how highly this was rated on RYM and such and thought I was taking crazy pills. It did not do anything for me at all and I love their first album probably more than Anthony did.
Makes sense lol it's rather different from the debut
100 % agree with you on the vocals. I have so much trouble hearing J's lyrics on this one which wasn't an issue on the first one.
Guitar song as an favorite and commatose as an least favorite is definitely an opinion..!
I don't think it's really possible for singing to be bad (see: Jerskin Fendrix)
But the mixing of the vocals on some of the tracks definitely feels slightly... embarrassed(?) when it could easily take the Fendrix route of being loud and proud while being slightly off-key
i love this album with all my heart but i do agree that the vocals could have used some work. i understand that it’s a stylistic choice and the narrative or the album is less of the focus compared to the first album, but when i have to go to the genius page to understand what j is saying it kinda sucks
Just pointing out, they have shoegaze vibes so that justifies they noise in the vocals
Interesting review Anthony, however you failed to consider that I've been crying to "Rare Animal" for the last three months.
This might be one of your worst takes yet!
Cancelled
I'm the world's biggest Glass Beach stan; I've been following J since the Casio Dad projects too. Totally agree with this review. It's basically a Radiohead album a decade and a half late. Not bad, just not great.
every few years I’m reminded that melon doesn’t like a lot of emo and math rock that I consider to be brilliant and that’s okay 💜
this review is lowkey baffling like i honestly don't get how he disliked this album knowing similar albums he's jammed with a lot. And commatose as the worst track? this man is trippin like crazy
If the album was called ''Plastics see Deaths'' you would have given it a 10
It's truly an insane record. The love for their own dynamic oozes authentically out of every arrangement.
*adds prog rock*
Fantano: yeah I'm feeling a light to decent mid on this
a bit confused cause he spoke highly of rare animal as a single recently
