After some days' worth of hours deliberating and fussing over my first (proper) camera purchase, you have sold me on the GH5 (ii). You clearly have great skills which go beyond merely choosing the right camera and lens, but the fact that this level of production is possible from a GH5 is just mind-blowing. Great content, I'm subscribing for more.
for heaven's sake, that's BEAUTIFUL. if you don't mind saying, the initial opening part of the VO to this piece seemed to be channelling some proper norman lovett vibes - no bad thing!

Nice work! Atmospheric. Good soundscape, beautiful grade, exceptionally well photographed, great model. A joy to watch and listen to. Thanks and keep it up!
Sorry for all the questions! And by the way I really appreciate you answering them! You have changed my videography for life! So 1st question, i see you shoot in 24fps and then 60fps. Why not shoot in C4k 48fps? and then second question, The lense you use, what EF mount are you using to put the lens on the gh5? or can I just mount the EF mount version straight on the gh5? Thanks a lot!
Ok after more research, let me rephrase the last question , whats the difference in buying the EF mounted lense or the MFT mounted lense? is there less crop on the EF Mount?
Hi! The GH5 doesn't shoot 48p, besides 60p gives slower motion than 48 would (40% vs 50%). Outputting to the Ninja V, 4K UHD at 60p 10 bit is the best option for slow motion. Re lenses, this is a huge subject and I recommend doing some research on speedboosters, as there's too much to say in one comment. In a nutshell you can use a speedbooster to mount EF lenses on MFT cameras. You can't mount them direct of course. There are pros and cons to this but in a nutshell using EF glass with a speedbooster increases your maximum aperture giving you an extra stop of light, and it also reduces the focal length giving you a wider field of view. Metabones and Viltrox are the best options for speedboosters. Example: There's a bit of math involved, but I could buy a 35mm f/1.4 in native MFT, or full frame EF mount. With the native option, the full frame equivalent would make it roughly 70mm, with the 2x crop. Alternatively, the EF speedbooster option would make it roughly 50mm f/1. So you get more width, wider aperture and a shallower DOF. Using Full Frame glass with a speedbooster on a MFT camera effectively gets you very close to a Super 35 look. This is why many MFT shooters prefer to adapt FF glass than use native lenses. I do a bit of both, depending on the situation. One of the many benefits of MFT format is the ability to adapt so many different lenses with almost unlimited options. I recommend watching some videos on the subject as there's lots to consider. Hope that helps mate!
@@RoweFilms Wow thanks so much for the in depth response! much appreciated! Is there any way to give a donation via paypal? Also if you ever come to south africa I would love to use your services to shoot a music video! Or if i'm on your side of the world. Love your style , I am now in at the cross roads to pull the trigger on this lense and all the adaptors but I'm not 100% sure if it's worth it as I have the gh5 with its native 25mm f1.7 lens, will it make a huge difference to upgrade to this setup from my existing one? Blessings!
@@ReinhardtBuhr welcome mate. No worries. Re your 25mm f1.7. Going back to what I was saying above, that native lens currently gives you a FF equivalent of a 50mm. The 35mm T1.5 Samyang with a speedbooster gives you roughly the same field of view, but your maximum aperture will be around f/1, so you'll get a shallower DOF. It gets a bit soft wide open, but personally I don't mind that as I always find photography lenses way too sharp for my liking. As well as that as it's a cine style lens, the long focus throw and focus gears are much better for manual focus. Native Pany lenses, as they're designed for stills, have a much shorter throw and as they use a focus by wire system they're not really very good for manual focus. Pros and cons to each mate! Of course, if I ever find myself in that part of the world you'll be the first to know mate. Likewise if you ever find yourself in the UK, give me a shout. @@RoweFilms "but your maximum aperture will be around f/1, so you'll get a much shallower DOF" Is this actually true? I've heard a lot of conflicting information online about this and am genuinely interested. Do speedboosters actually give you a shallower depth of field? While they do give you more light, the aperture isn't actually changing size, so the DOF should be the same, right? Kinda like now NDs let in less light, but your DOF stays the same. Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Also, unrelated, what strength black pro-mist did you use for this?

I found your channel today and subscribed right away! Such an inspiration and talent! Could you answer a question for a beginner videographer? I am shooting with Fuji xt4; it's a great camera but has issues with autofocusing. Could you recommend the focus settings? Autofocus or manual? If autofocus, face/eye detection on or off? Any other recommendations? I know a lot about photography but new to videography. Focusing has been an issue for me. The autofocus seems to wonder around a lot, with such low consistency I can't trust it.
Thanks and welcome :) I'd say autofocus for video is a notoriously contentious issue. Many cameras just aren't good enough to fully rely on in my opinion. Canon duel pixel is very good, LUMIX phase detect is pretty bad. But personally good AF isn't something I look for in a camera. Filmmakers tend to want full control, so learn to focus manually would be my advice. AF has its place of course, and on some cameras can be good enough to use in certain applications (flying on a gimbal or locked off talking head shots), but I always focus manually anyway. It can be daunting at first but you will be surprised how quickly you get used to it and then you don't look back. Good luck!

Quite closely I'd imagine, but haven't tried the voigtlanders myself so can't say specifically. The Samyang with speedbooster will be around f/1 so similar iris achieving similar depth of field. Both have manual focus and aperture rings. The Voigt don't have gears or clickless aperture, but they are native MFT so may be a tad sharper (if that's what you're looking for) as there's no speedbooster required. Then again the Samyang being EF mount is probably more versatile and could be mounted to more cameras. Cheaper too. As for the look, I can imagine them looking quite similar, but can't really say as I haven't done a comparison!
@@RoweFilms I have 10.5mm, 17,5mm and 42,5mm voigtlander lenses with follow focus gears, and the Voigts does have clickless aperture :) they are really good. I use them mostly at f1.2-1.4, because I like that softer filmic look.

Personally I think it's worth investing in a speedbooster as once you've got one, it opens up many more possibilities for lens choices.

Congratulations on your very good work with a great camera/monitor combination! If you could get the model again, it might be challenging for you to shoot this in similar exterior light, but with actual close ups of her in the dappled light. Perhaps with that great Lumix fixed 25mm f/1.7 lens? In this video, she's a mere figure and I'm certain you realize the woman has a very striking face. It calls out for great light and close views of her strong angularity. You might want to invite her into a studio as well and use a variety of interior lights and gels to further illuminate her beauty. Also, if she has any talent toward actually acting, your fine assistance may boost that as well. Also, good that you trusted the GH5 inner stabilization for your super solid hand-held shots.

Thanks very much mate. Some nice ideas there. She's actually my other half, so I'm pretty sure I can rope her in again. She loved your comment of course! Haha cheers mate
