    Summary:
-Ayyash ibn Abi Rabiah ibn Mughira is the cousin of Umar and half brother of Abu Jahal as they shared the same mother.
-His wife is Asma bint Salamah.
-Abdullah, their son was born in Abyssinia.
-He became Muslim shortly after Dar ul Arqam and migrated to Abyssinia on the second trip.
-Abu Jahl and Harith ibn Hisham(brother) said to Ayyash when he was on his way to Madinah with Umar Ra that our mother is sick. She'll not drink or eat anything and won't go in the shade until you come back. Umar ra knew they were scheming and warned Ayyash but he still went.
-Abu Jahal and Harith captured and chained him and he was brought back to Makkah.
-It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:
"I heard the Prophet ﷺ, when he would say in the last rakah of Salat ul Isha in qunoot "O Allah, rescue Ayyash ibn Abi Rabia! O Allah, rescue Salama ibn Hisham! O Allah, rescue al-Walid ibn al-Walid! O Allah, rescue all oppressed believers! O Allah, be hard on Mudhars! O Allah, send them years of famine like the famine of Yusuf.”
-He relented his Islam for some time on pressure but then remained as a Muslim in Makkah.
-"Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: "We believe," and will not be tested." (29:2). This verse specifically refers to those who were tortured in Makkah(including Ayyash) and were unable to make their way to Al Madinah.
-During Fath Makkah, Ayyash saw the man, Al Harith bin Yazeed who used to torture him in Makkah and killed him, not knowing he became a Muslim. "It's not for a believer to kill a believer except by mistake..."(4:92)
-After the treaty of Hudaybiyyah, when Abu Jandal and Abu Baseer escaped Makkah, they started freeing fugitives and attacked Meccan caravans. So, the Meccans told the Prophet ﷺ to take the fugitives. Ayyash, Walid and Salamah were among them.
-Khalid ibn Walid, Ikrima ibn Abi Jahl, Ayyash and Salamah fought in the Battle of the Yarmuk which was a major battle against the Byzantine empire. All three passed away (except Khalid) as a shaheed in this battle. Khalid Ra led their janazah and said these were the best men from Banu Makhzum.

If Makkah was reliant on caravans, wasn't Madinah also? If so, why didn't the Makkans strike the caravans of the Muslims?

Geography. Meccans had to go through Madina to trade with ash-Sham & Persia. The people of Madina didn't have to cross Makkah.
