Fast and agile lightweight vehicles have been trialled by Royal Marines as they prepare for operations in which quickly raiding adversary positions and getting out is key.
The American-made Polaris MRZR-D4 is an ultralight 4x4 off-roader that can carry up to four commandos and reach speeds of 60mph for rapid movement across the battlefield.
It can be used for quick attacks and withdrawals, but also for logistical resupply and casualty evacuation and also helpful is that it can fit in Chinook helicopters, meaning marines can be dropped quickly to their location.

We had one for 18 months in the Scottish Highlands. Great for use on tracks and hard ground, but on steep side slopes and soft ground, they are pretty useless. Too top heavy and the belt drive slips in steep climbs. As soon as you throw in a few drainage channels you are stuffed - so that’s a no for me

Its a great get around. Fast and mobile, no armor slowing and weighing it down so it can go places other vehicles can't, I like it.

No mine protection though which is why in real combat we upgraded armour on all vehicles…these are nice off-road vehicles but we’re fantasising a role for lite vehicles that doesn’t exist in all the last 3 wars we fought

A modern version of the Willys jeep that was used so effectively behind enemy lines by SF. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The British armoured divisions need to get the MOD to convert the Scimitar and Viking and it's trailer vehicles in to missiles and self propelled rocket Carriers, don't let them go to waist.

We have seen this idea before in various forms...... then we had the legal cases of IED's killing troops in soft skinned vehicles.

Why not put the equipment in the roof and sides, instead of putting it in the back? Gun mounts on the passenger doors and more space for units to the back.

They get tippy easy. I have followed people on trails with loads up high and they are all over the place. I keep most of my weight below the top of the bed and lighter things up higher.

Gun mounts for the gimpy or 50 cal are ALWAY'S set too high which means the gunner ALWAY'S has his torso unnecessarily exposed to incoming enemy fire, this i do not understand...

They always show these things working in deserts. In a European winter the occupants will all develop hypothermia in 30mins and be totally useless when they arrive at the battle. Even the WWII jeep had a canvas tilt to stop soldiers freezing to death. Useless for cas-evac cos they will need warming up. All equipment will get soaked and filthy.
Someone on this comment section recommended Land Cruisers - why not? Effective off road, unarmoured, cheap, easy to fix, and... they have got a ROOF. Gucci....

You want mobility, learn a lesson from the Taliban. All they needed to reconquer Afghanistan in record time were old Toyota Land-cruisers and cheap Chinese motorbikes.

Sure, happily sit in your mrap that can only use established roads that are packed with ieds. waiting to get rpged in your convoy line while the fancy golf carts take the offroad route and actually get deployed faster. -_-

If they think when overloaded with more guns and kit 85bhp will be enough I don't see it. Christ, a Hilux is 150 horse. Look what Top Gear did to theirs. It'll be great for a Swarm attack but I think time will tell its reliability and use. The farm versions are pretty fragile, and it won't swim ashore.

What I see here, we haven't learned much from Iraq and Afghanistan. People might want to look at what's going on in Ukraine. Guessing this will work great dodging the artillery falling on the battlefield.

@@johnsmith-tp3jv There is no such thing any more. Parts are made in Mexico and assembled here. Very little of the actual manufacturing and forging is done in the USA. Including their prostar engines which are made in china and finished in Mexico.

    • @johnsmith-tp3jv

@@Tool_vs_Tool There is still such a thing. Most of the parts are still made and manufactured throughout America and so are the Prostar engines. Prostar never moved to china or mexico.

Utter crap, how much will they cost probably more than 250k each, hilux/similar would be a fraction. Unprotected, not even basic, from the weather, rubbish for non desert, why are we so obsessed with everything fde/coyote - move on, forget the alamo!! I do appreciate we need to move on from vikings - tracked, hi-maint, not self deploying like wheeled, but why don't we buy something sensible. Might hark back, but cant the uk, work with Landrover to develop the new defender, but at a reasonable cost. RM will need to retain some tracked/Extreme high mobility, like the BvS10 Beowulf.
