  • Just a little video on spindle gouge practice. In this video I share a simple way to practice spindle gouge control and making coves. Cutting side and end grain.

Good video, thanks. One tip I picked up off another video to stop run back, especially on a critical cut that you can’t afford to screw up: cut a small shoulder with the long tip of a skew chisel before starting a cove cut, then rest the bevel of the spindle gouge against the shoulder. Works for me.

Just wanted to say 'hi'. I'm a 62 y.o. lady and decided to start turning as I cut down a 100 y.o. burled maple about a year ago. No one would give me anything for it and I couldn't stand to put it in the fireplace so I decided to turn it myself. I'm in Boise, Idaho. I'll say one thing, I SURE appreciate my Gpa's talent a lot more than ever did. And I SURE wish I could've had his shop!!

You're doing great! I'm really just getting back into it after many any years! It is definitely a science of mechanics learning how to address the wood with a tool!

Good job. Enjoyed watching this video. Practice makes perfect. I myself am getting back into turning, trying to master each tool, one by one. Great advice from you, in taking your time, and enjoying every moment. Thanks for posting this video.

A useful and refreshing video, thanks. I recently found myself having lots of run backs when trying to face off a blank before practicing some texturing. My first reaction was frustration, then curiosity. Why? What was I doing wrong? I realised that I hadn't been doing any spindle work for some time and was out of practice. In the moment I found way round by using other tools. But the question remained how do you start (& avoid run back) and how do you get the face off perfectly flat? Back to research - You Tube - the good news is that lots of experienced turners still appear to get the occasional run back on their vids. So entry is critical before picking up the bevel. I guess the biggest lesson i learned which your video endorses is practice, practice, practice. And if the price of developing skills is 'making shavings' then its a small price to pay. So I'm getting back to spindle practice! Thanks to you and lots of other contributors for making my practice more informed.

If I was getting one spindle gouge would you recommend a 3/8" or 1/2"? Thanks

Wish you had shown the bevels on the tools before you used them.

I think that you would have less of a problem with run out If you cleared the shavings off the tool rest occasionally!! Not anchoring the gouge to a solid rest allows that sort of hesitant start, allowing the tool to skid. I got about half way through watching the video, and you did not clear the rest once, even when you changed the gouge ! Bad practice sir!
