I had this game as a kid on the PC and now I speedrun the game. So needless to say, I've put way more hours into this game than I care to admit. I remember playing this as a child and greatly enjoying it for just being able to explore around (even though I never got past Alleys and Gullies as a child). Now, since I speedrun the game, I have a completely different look at the game, and needless to say, I still find it an enjoyable experience to play the game. One thing that wasn't mentioned in this review is that the N64 version was actually an EASIER version of the game. On the PC/PS1/DS version, the last level required you to have obtained 40 tokens, you take more damage from enemies and your health isn't recharged after each level. On the N64 version, only 30 tokens are required to beat the game and your health becomes a non-issue. As a side note, "You've got a friend in me" is the music for the first level in the game in the N64 version, however all of the other versions use a different, generic soundtrack (which is disappointing), although, I really do enjoy all of the music in this game. The game plays extremely well, and once you've played the game as much as I have, the camera basically isn't even a problem anymore. For anyone playing the game, a good trick to manipulate the camera beyond the two buttons that SLOWLY rotate the camera, just quickly go into, then out of first person mode and the camera will switch to the direction that you are facing. Love this game and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good time! (For anyone wondering, I estimate that I've beaten this game ~75-100 times, so yes, I know what I'm talking about :P)
I'm bumping this up so more people can see all those tips and hints! thank you for sharing, thats why i love about having this channel is that its not a two way conversation its a way for all n64 fans to come together and even learn from one another!
I have it on PS1 (PS1 bit the dust but N64 still going strong so I'd like this game on N64) this game was a lot of fun spent too many days on it lol and when you mentioned Alleys and Gullies I raged inside...
I respect the hell out of people that master obscure games. I’m sure the people who designed this game are happy to have a fan like Joe Bill play this game, even though this wasn’t a huge success. I, too, had this game (at least I think I did-I had some Nintendo 64 Toy Story game), but never got past the first level. I kinda wish I had access to it now. Maybe I’ll get it on the PS1 someday, as I still have a PS2 and that should be able to play it. Godspeed, Joe Bill.
I really love this game and have a ton of nostalgia for it. One reason for my nostalgia is because this was the first game that I bought with my own money. Also for me Toy Story 2 was my Mario 64. I know it's hard to believe but I never played Mario 64 as a kid. Toy Story 2 was so much fun for me and my older brother to play through as a kid. Many times my brother would have to help me with some of the bosses and puzzles. I remember being so excited to tell my brother that I had beaten Zerg all by myself. I recently replayed this game again and I still think it holds up extremely well and was still lots of fun.
I know this is old, but id like to share my experience with this game. When I was about 5 or 6, I loved the Toy Story Films(And still do) and on a trip to EB Games, I picked up this title... for ps1. My sister handed me down her N64 in 2001 I think(I was about 4) with DK64, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and Paper Mario(and aside from Mario 64, I still have the same cartridges i was handed down) and I absolutely loved them. When I got Toy Story 2 for ps1, it was probably my favorite ps1 game, third from Spyro 3 and Crash 3 as my favorite games as a kid(I still have the original copies of these as well)! My parents divorced and my mom moved to a neighboring city to take care of a sick family member. My dad was reluctant on me taking my ps1 games back to my moms house when I was through visiting because he thought I would forget them there and be sad, so I left them, but when I got to my mom's house, I wanted to play Toy Story 2. I went over to Blockbuster, but they didn't have it for the ps1, just the N64, so I picked it up. Long story short, It was fun, but even as a kid, I noticed how cut down the N64 version was,
Did anyone else have a hard time with the garbage can boss as a kid? I remember I always had to have my sister do it for me since I could never press the button fast enough.
I love the rat feel of the game where you're a tiny thing and everything is scaled to match. But yeah... That's pretty much where it ends with this game... Great video!
I got this game recently, because I often watch Toy Story with my daughter, and thought it would be a game she would enjoy watching. The gameplay is mediocre, as are the graphics. My instincts were to dislike the game, but the balanced learning curve and the need to explore the vast levels actually drew me in a lot more than I thought it would. I'm only a few levels in, but it's better than I expected.
Another awesome n64 review bud. Hands down you are the best n64 game reviewer on youtube. I really enjoy toy story on the n64. As you mentioned, it has a few flaws, but to this day still has enjoyable gameplay.
thanks matthew :) this game has grown on me a little since i did the review but i have an upcoming platformer type game in the works that I've always loved :)
Some friends just introduced me to this game a few months ago! It's really pretty decent- better than I expected. The LOD system in the visuals is kind of neat, too (it beats having a thick fog over everything), and there are some nice textures as well, but it would be nice if the important objects would pop into view a little sooner.
I've been re-watching your older videos ever since you came back and I must say that I actually really do love this game and had it on the N64 back in the day and I even download it for my PS5 recently. Lol
i still love this game, I repeatedly completed this game when I didn't own a memory card , looking back at it is still nostalgia to me. mint review plus i had it for the ps1
i had some special bundle where the game came with a ps1 look usb gamepad for pc. it was great. obviously game pc with clean smooth graphics were ideal. but both ps1 and 64 can hold their own respectively.
I had this on the PSX, Was the first game I ever played and I friggin loved it. Im happy the developers are still around making the LEGO games as well.
Yes I had it when I was a kid, Mom got it for me on Christmas along with Super Smash Bros! I loved Toy Story 2. Looking back some of the platforming later in the game just looks like an absolute nightmare.
im impressed they made it where you could see Buzz's face reflected in his visor in the first person view. the first time i was aware of something like that was Metroid Prime.
I did play the PS1 version of TS2 as a kid, and I actually really enjoyed it. I first played it on a demo disc, and then I got the game about a month later. I even saw the movie around the same time, and I enjoyed it aswell, and that was when I was in a theatre with a friend of mine.
I think the graphics are actually good. And there is a little detail I noticed. If you aim in first person view you can see the reflection of Buzz' face in the visor, like in Metroid Prime.
I grew up with Toy Story as a kid. And, the console that I played on the most was the N64, so naturally I had this game and still do to this day. I remember really liking this game as a kid, but also being a bit frustrated that there wasn't much to it. Something I don't think you mentioned in the video is how short the game itself is. Seriously, one of the shortest n64 games I ever played. I still go back to this game, as well as others on the N64 at the age of 15 now. Somehow, the game still intrigues me.
I had this game when I was a kid. I remember it was fun, but got repetitive and difficult. I never finished it. I bought the N64 version on eBay so maybe I'll finally finish it.
It's not the most challenging game but it has a lot of fun puzzles. You can finish it pretty quickly if you do the bare minimum but there is so much more you can do with this game. The camera is a little annoying but you can always change the camera views..
Still really enjoy this one just as much when I was young . Would rent this from Blockbuster a few times , my sis and I got pretty far never finished the game .
I wish they made a version for the DS like they did with Mario 64. I was about to buy a DS just so I can play those two. Maybe I should just buy a Nintendo 64 instead
Man I wish mine still worked. I got mine from blockbuster rental a long time ago when I was like 5? And it on the cartridge it still had the blockbuster sticker on it. Such a amazing game for its time and I remembered it quite well before re-seeing it on TH-cam. All in all I just love the late 90's video games, it just has a special feel to it but of course I was born in 1999 so I didn't get to live it and remember it.
Grizzlygaming88 yeah this would have been a popular blockbuster rental game back in the day! at least now you can relive the classic era that was the late 90s early 00's
I saw it in the '99 Christmas JCPenney catalogue and I reckon I will buy a complete copy on eBay just because of that, considering the fact that the gameplay will not live up to the hype this title had back then. Certainly the box, or rather the spine, will look cool in my collection!
I had the PS1 version as kid and this along with A Bugs Life seem to go into a category of games that i like playing but no one else does, maybe it is childhood but also I NEVER saw this game in the negative way I heard about it in 1999
I prefer the n64 version personally. The PS1 looks better and has full motion video, but I prefer the music of the N64 version. I like the relaxing You've Got a Friend in Me music in the first level of the N64 version. The PS1 version has a really suspenseful soundtrack for the first level that feels a little too over the top.
This was one of my favourite PS1 platformers back when I was a kid, it's not as good as Spyro or a masterpiece like Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, but Toy Story 2 was definitely a fun game to play, especially since I was a massive fan of the movies and wanted my fix of playing a good Disney game.
This is probably what I'd call a guilty pleasure sort of game. I adore Toy Story and nothing felt better than running through Andy's Room completing objectives. My only complaints were some platforming faults (especially in the alleyway level) and the later stages begin to look too gray and dismal that they lose the more attractive appeal of the earlier stages. I still like playing it though and its a perfectly satisfying game to own.
I feel this review is perfect, more or less. This is not a game i would have played without childhood nostalgia powering me through, but for its time, its definitely a solid play. The camera angling is the worst part, but i find it easily circumvented by tapping RB twice to fix the view.
I had the dreamcast version, the store sold it to me with the console and i enjoyed that game way more than i think. Not the best platformer ever made but a solid one
I played this game as a kid but I never played the PlayStation version but rather the N64 and man was the game pretty great for the most part! I loved the 3D platformer feel to the game, the controls, the music, and that's it. However, I don't like the visuals as they're kind of blurry, I don't like how the characters don't talk much, and I don't like how Woody wasn't in the game but now I understand that Buzz is supposed to rescue Woody from Al much like he did in the movie. I also don't understand why both Stinky Pete and Jessie aren't in this game either. I also hated the fact that the game doesn't have a save feature for you to save your game when you come back to playing it much like in games such as Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, and DK 64 but rather you need an expansion pack to save your game instead of the game asking to save it for you (ugh, how frustrating). Lastly, I knew there was a PlayStation version but I didn't know the N64 version was just a direct port from the PlayStation version and plays the exact same but with worse graphics and the characters don't talk during the cutscenes and instead there's pictures as visuals for the cutscenes.
I did used to have this game (not any more though) and as far as I remember it, it was okay. I perfered Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie but it was playable.
When I first played this I was able to overlook the flaws of this game and still enjoy it. One thing I feel is better about this port then the rest is better controls.
Another game I rented on the N64 back when it came out. As a kid I really enjoyed it. Seeing it now though, for me it hasn't aged too well. There are a lot of N64 games I can go back to today and really enjoy them still, but this game for some reason just doesn't have the same nostalgic value. It was a fun platformer at the time, but you are absolutely right in saying that when compared to games like Mario 64 or DK64 it just isn't very good. Anyway, thanks for the review. Always great to see these old games.
My cousin had this for PlayStation and we spent hours and hours on this game. I'd like to pick up the N64 version just to have it for my collection. Thanks!
Man, those were the good days. Thank you so much for the review, it really brought me a lot of nostalgia. This game just brings me so many good memories from my childhood when life was easy lol :,)
i used to have this game as a kid an i used to love it a lot. I thought just exploring the world was the best part. I remember half the time i had no idea wheere i was going or what i was doing
I had the N64 Version and I enjoy playing this game so much. But I couldn't save because I didn't have a memory pack. So what I did in order to beat the whole game, is I played for 4 hours straight until I got to woody.
I remember playing the play station version at my uncles house and I used to play it a lot but I couldn't get that far because we did not have any memory cards
I had very fond memories of this game growing up I'm growing my n64 collection up and I still haven't re purchased this one yet :( Totally worth it It's at a local store for $6
It was alright. As the PC version or N64 version some things got repetitive especially the music. What about the game after goldeneye on the N64 do you review that game?
My bad. I think I meant world is not enough which is 007 which was bought by EA then by Activision. The multiplayer and single player were okay if I'm not mistaken. It had a bank at the start it was not long after goldeneye. I thought it was a little under rated as a bond title.
Toy Story 2 was easily one of my favorite N64 games. I remember playing it all day to beat it because I didn't have a memory card at the time to save my game. I kinda wish you could have just saved the game on the cartridge, after all it wasn't like the PlayStation disc format. Regardless, I loved Toy Story 2 as much as Banjo-Kazooie and Super Mario 64. I got the PlayStation version on my PS3. Part of me still prefers the N64 version, but I'm just happy to still play this game on a modern console.
Loved it as a kid, first played it when it came out on the 64 and I got it ffor the PC, and years later I heard the PS1/PC versions were superior so I currently own the PS1 version^^
I remember playing this game along with Pokemon Stadium and Mario 64, all great games, but this to me was really a good game, And since capcom did not do it like other disney games this is a gem if you ask me =) great Job Glenn
I did complete the N64 version when I rented it when I was 9. I own it on n64 now. I do like the Playstation version better. ps1 looks a little better and playstation is smoother and SOUNDS so much better. I have the game on Dreamcast too but there is a weird issue with the controller where buzz does not walk straight forward. The PC version looked the best but having to good of a gaming machine now days wont allow the game to run :(
Yeah, Glenn, I had this game as a kid. I didn't have the PS1 or N64 version though, I had it on the PC. From what I remember, I enjoyed it quite a bit. My dad had to help me quite a few times in figuring out how to progress through certain areas of the game, but hey, nothing wrong with a bit of challenge. Looking back on it now, it looks like it would be a lot easier to play and finish now that I'm an older, more experienced gamer, but it's nice to know I had some fun with it when I was younger :P
I have the playstation version and I absolutely love everything about it. I am a huge toy story fan however so I suppose the environments and characters make up for the downfalls. Good review it's surprising that the n64 version isn't superior!
I played this game on the playstation 1 back in the day, and I thought it was an amazing game...I was also 5 years old and since I didn't have a memory card, I never got past the first two or three levels in one sitting!
The only bad part of this game is that you need a Memory Pak to save progress. The final boss suck too, they could have done better instead a trio composed of already defeated bosses. Although a little inferior than other 3D plataforms like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie,, it is still a great game
I remember playing it and enjoying it very much, the 1st level was so hard to me,the farthest i had gotten was the construction site but now thanks to Emulators and the homebrew channel on the wii im hopefully gonna go back and try to beat it,because who doesn't love some toy story :D
Thank you,i'll be sure to tell you how it goes, also how come theres no reviews of DK64 or the 2 CastleVania N64's? they look really interesting and i'd like to see a review on them, also do you have any of the 7th/8th Gen Consoles PS3,360,wii/ Wii U,PS4,XBX1?
alright then, ill keep an eye on your channel and keep watching,im just glad at this point your not 1 of those big youtubers who has like no time to reply to people, also 1 last question, are you gonna do the Duke Nukem,Doom, and Quake games? :D
I've already done them! hah yeah i have always replied to like 99% of comments, it gets harder as i get more subs but thats one of the things i like is the interaction we all have here
most people praise traveler´s talles for the lego games, but back in the day, they made a bunch of mediocre games...that sonic race, that muppet kart racing,etc...
I had the playstation version of this and never really got on with it. I think with the games that you mentioned (super mario 64 and banjo kazooie) around ,my expectations of platforming games at the time was of a high standard. This probably tainted my view of toy story 2.
I had this game as a kid on the PC and now I speedrun the game. So needless to say, I've put way more hours into this game than I care to admit. I don't know why Nintendo thought it was a good idea to make that damn thing for a cartridge-based console.

I remember renting this game on the N64 as a kid. I enjoyed it very much. I like how it follows the movie quite well.
yeah its cool if the movie is good when games do that!
Nice to see Buzz's reflection on the inside of his helmet in the POV shots being lifted to Metroid Prime by Retro.
now you point it out.....
Did anyone else have a hard time with the garbage can boss as a kid? I remember I always had to have my sister do it for me since I could never press the button fast enough.
All the console toy story games are good and are criminally overlooked when talking about good movie licensed games
This may not be the best platformer in the world, but I remember having some good platforming fun with this game.
and thats all that matters really i think!

I saw it in the '99 Christmas JCPenney catalogue and I reckon I will buy a complete copy on eBay just because of that, considering the fact that the gameplay will not live up to the hype this title had back then.
Certainly the box, or rather the spine, will look cool in my collection!
It's a decent game.
I had a lot of fun playing this game with my kids.
+N64 Glenn Plant I was thinking about buying the N64 version for nostalgia, will it be worth the purchase if I grew up with the PS1 version?
not really it's just has better graphics by taking advantage of the N64s superior hardware.
I had the PS1 version as kid and this along with A Bugs Life seem to go into a category of games that i like playing but no one else does, maybe it is childhood but also I NEVER saw this game in the negative way I heard about it in 1999
man i need to get around to doing bugs life....i just have so many requests I'm working on right now!
I've honestly never prefered the blurry "smooth" graphics of the N64 over the PS1. PS1's graphics always appealed more to me.
I had this on the Dreamcast as a kid and loved it but I never finished it because it was so hard
Better controls and official Toy Story music in the first level instead of a generic aggressive melody makes the N64 the better version imo
I got the dreamcast version of this game
Josh S thats a great version
I loved this game on my N64 when I was younger and now I can play it on my PS3 or PSP for $6
When I first played this I was able to overlook the flaws of this game and still enjoy it.
Always great to see these old games.
glad to have you watching! yeah certain games don't age at all but others such as this really lay it on thick. its a strange thing!
My cousin had this for PlayStation and we spent hours and hours on this game. I'd like to pick up the N64 version just to have it for my collection.
Thanks!
Dat space level was the shit
To this day this is the still the best Toy Story game you could ever play! Sure, future games look better they're all minigames!
I grew up with the PS1 version. Loved it. Now I will add the N64 version to my collection and play through it. 🐳🐳🐳
Hope you enjoy it!
Man, those were the good days. Thank you so much for the review, it really brought me a lot of nostalgia. This game just brings me so many good memories from my childhood when life was easy lol :,)
i used to have this game as a kid an i used to love it a lot. I thought just exploring the world was the best part. I remember half the time i had no idea wheere i was going or what i was doing
thats what i love about games....same thing for me with duck tales on NES as a kid
Good video well done keep it up you make good videos
To me to you 👍
Ha ha very funny i like toy story.
5:03 Wait when could you fight Zurg? I played through the game about three to five times and never once fought him. Is this a N64 only thing?
Mono Chaos it’s a boss battle. Comes after the elevator shaft stage
Hmm I've only ever played this on the 64.
I had the N64 Version and I enjoy playing this game so much. But I couldn't save because I didn't have a memory pack. So what I did in order to beat the whole game, is I played for 4 hours straight until I got to woody.
I remember playing the play station version at my uncles house and I used to play it a lot but I couldn't get that far because we did not have any memory cards
ryan the diaper boy Yeah, same happened to me. I think my friend managed to get to the airport level before the console got turned off.
I had very fond memories of this game growing up
I'm growing my n64 collection up and I still haven't re purchased this one yet :(
Totally worth it
It's at a local store for $6
this was another one that I had trouble saving the game. I don't know what I was missing back then but I could never save the games.
It was alright. As the PC version or N64 version some things got repetitive especially the music. What about the game after goldeneye on the N64 do you review that game?
Which game do you mean? Perfect dark?
My bad. I think I meant world is not enough which is 007 which was bought by EA then by Activision. The multiplayer and single player were okay if I'm not mistaken. It had a bank at the start it was not long after goldeneye. I thought it was a little under rated as a bond title.
Axewhipe i think for a lot of people it was just far too easy, the campaign can be completed in an hour or so
Toy Story 2 was easily one of my favorite N64 games.
I played this on the dremacast and pc great game !
Certainly is!
Loved it as a kid, first played it when it came out on the 64 and I got it ffor the PC, and years later I heard the PS1/PC versions were superior so I currently own the PS1 version^^
thats the version to play IMO...although i never played it on PC!
I liked this game for its level design. Al's apartment for the win.
yeah the size of the levels is great, nice how they managed to pack so much of the environments in
I remember playing this game along with Pokemon Stadium and Mario 64, all great games, but this to me was really a good game, And since capcom did not do it like other disney games this is a gem if you ask me =) great Job Glenn
thanks! glad you enjoyed the episode!
as a kid i loved this game so much i owned it on every platform, but now the only thing good about this game is the nostalgia :/
Good video i like Toy Story.
One of the best platformers
I remembered enjoying this game as a kid (still have the cart). Haven't played it since then, though. Probably wouldn't be as good as I remembered xD
This game just got a rerelease on the PlayStation 5 a year ago.
The PC version looked the best but having to good of a gaming machine now days wont allow the game to run :(
This game was the shit when I was a kid. I never beat it because I sucked at videogames and had a short attention span.
Looking back on it now, it looks like it would be a lot easier to play and finish now that I'm an older, more experienced gamer, but it's nice to know I had some fun with it when I was younger :P
thats cool to know! i guess thats maybe one thing i forgot to explore...the fact they would want parents to help kids with puzzles!
*****
Haha! True :)
I don’t remember having any problems with this on the Dreamcast
I have the playstation version and I absolutely love everything about it. I am a huge toy story fan however so I suppose the environments and characters make up for the downfalls. Good review it's surprising that the n64 version isn't superior!
yeah i think they just rushed it instead of thinking how best to do it for n64. plus TT were the best suited to n64 porting
I played this game on the playstation 1 back in the day, and I thought it was an amazing game...I was also 5 years old and since I didn't have a memory card, I never got past the first two or three levels in one sitting!
thats crazy yeah parents always didn't see a point in getting memory cards! i had the same problem for a few months with most consoles too!
The only bad part of this game is that you need a Memory Pak to save progress. The final boss suck too, they could have done better instead a trio composed of already defeated bosses. Although a little inferior than other 3D plataforms like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie,, it is still a great game
I played it on my grandma's Play Station, and I liked it a lot, I might track this down for some nostalgia
Wait....grandmas play station?!? She sounds cool hah
***** She also has a gamecube and a PS3
She rocks :-)
What music did you have at the beginning? Was it the toy story theme remixed for something? Let me know
I remember playing it and enjoying it very much, the 1st level was so hard to me,the farthest i had gotten was the construction site but now thanks to Emulators and the homebrew channel on the wii im hopefully gonna go back and try to beat it,because who doesn't love some toy story :D
let me know how you get on! its certainly not an easy game to complete but its very fun trying!
Thank you,i'll be sure to tell you how it goes, also how come theres no reviews of DK64 or the 2 CastleVania N64's? they look really interesting and i'd like to see a review on them, also do you have any of the 7th/8th Gen Consoles PS3,360,wii/ Wii U,PS4,XBX1?
i had a wii u but sold it as i don't rate it all that much. i just haven't got around to reviewing those n64 games yet, i like them both though :)
alright then, ill keep an eye on your channel and keep watching,im just glad at this point your not 1 of those big youtubers who has like no time to reply to people, also 1 last question, are you gonna do the Duke Nukem,Doom, and Quake games? :D
I've already done them! hah yeah i have always replied to like 99% of comments, it gets harder as i get more subs but thats one of the things i like is the interaction we all have here
I'm curious as to if the analog controls here feel better than on PSX
most people praise traveler´s talles for the lego games, but back in the day, they made a bunch of mediocre games...that sonic race, that muppet kart racing,etc...
retrovideogamejunkie oh man I've never heard of a muppet racer!
I had the playstation version of this and never really got on with it. I think with the games that you mentioned (super mario 64 and banjo kazooie) around ,my expectations of platforming games at the time was of a high standard. This probably tainted my view of toy story 2.
thx for reviewing this game i loved it when i was younger but never actually beat it lol
you'd probably enjoy going back to it now, it seems that way from people who have nostalgia for it below!
ya im going to give it a shot and finally get to the end after so many years
