I want to thank you for your compliments on the music in this game. I enjoyed composing every moment of it, and I’m thrilled there are people who recognize that effort. It was an overwhelming challenge given the limitations of that platform.
Yes I remember reading about what you did in the Nintendo power magazine. You recorded it with the best quality you could add and compressed it. When I first read about it and then played the game, I automatically thought of Factor 5 compression technology. I have always wondered how you did that. How you compressing it into a 96 Mb cart still blows my mind to this day. In fact, Reading about how strongly you felt about the music got me excited for the game.
swilco266 No, I'm almost sure it's still in scientology. I'm pretty fucking sure of it actually. Though, you aren't wrong with Pastafarianism, but I feel that's more a parody on religions.
Looking back at this game and the whole mechanic with the disguises, this might be where IO Interactive got some inspiration from for the Hitman games.
I never thought of that before, it makes sense. God I loved this game, especially the outfits. I also love Hitman, it is good to see a company making your favorite games. They should make an HD reboot of this game.
Man, I remember the Official Nintendo Magazine promoting the absolute hell out of this game, proclaiming it as "the next Goldeneye". What went wrong? I also believe this was Ocean Software's final ever game before being swallowed up by Infogrammes.
yeah NOM/ONM were all over this lapping it up until the release then they ate humble pie and looked like muppets. To be fair though every mag at the time was expecting great things from this. And yes thats right about inrogrammes - i mentioned it a few minutes in :)
I fell into that trap too. It looked good and the film was ok so yeah I got it, hated it but by the end thought it was ok and in couple of parts really good. I always thought Ocean had been acquired well before this release but used the Ocean name due its popularity/history. Still was that perhaps the spin just so Infogrames would not have its name tied to the game if it bombed.
I think Infogrammes used Ocean's name for a few games, couple of Japanese imports on the PS1 (which is ironic as that's the exact same thing Ocean did when they bought Imagine :D)
Larry Bundy Jr I still have the copy of that Nintendo Power. Only copy I ever saved. Reserved my copy of the game. Never been more disappointed in a video game.
This was a great game for my younger brother and I when we were kids. We would often pretend to be Ethan and reenact parts of the Embassy mission while at family parties. The game isn't perfect, but it was great when we played it and created some great memories.
I used to have this back in the day. I was a young kid so I had no idea what I was doing in it, but I do remember enjoying it a lot. Those first few missions bring back a lot of memories.
I LOVED this game! I even beat both modes. I also got it for PS1 but haven't had the luxury of playing it yet. Definitely agree with this review. The interrogation level was what I believe the hardest level in the game.
I loved this game as a kid! I got it when I was 8 years old for my N64 back in 98 and I use to play it non stop! I could go through the whole game on both difficulties with no problem! Good times and good memories; now I am 29, and it is crazy how time fly's; I wish it was the 90s again, and I was a kid again sometimes; just sitting in my room playing my N64!
had this game as a kid and remember it fondly. good game, not perfect by any means but I think it's really underrated. Great variety of missions clever AI (not perfect but ok for the time) good graphics and outstanding ost full of gadgets and disguises, not even metal gear solid had so many possibilities in this aspect
I used to have this in the past and sadly i sold it. It's a pretty good game overall for me, i enjoyed it. It has some flaws here and there but nothing too big. Games in the past didn't hold your hand in-game, no arrows pointing where to go and such and this is imo a big plus. It's a much greater feel of achievement when you solve the different tasks throughout the game. I'll have to get this into my collection again.
Yeah I had a fun time with the game. And after I beat it I GameSharked the shit out of it and went on a rampage killing everyone that gave me a hard time first time around haha.
***** One of the few highlights of an otherwise disappointing game. I bought this when it was first released in America and looked forward to it for a very long time given it was announced prior to the launch of the N64. My high hopes were dashed and understandably when comparing it to Goldeneye. It was a good game but nothing special and felt somewhat amateurish and rushed in parts.
why would tom cruise refuse to let his likeness in the game because of the violence in it but when you think the fact that most movies he has been in lately are very violent -bryan t
Great video review. I actually had the pleasure of interviewing Micheal Pummell who composed the music for this title. He said that the N64 hardware made it a bit more difficult to implement the embassy stage's dynamic music. ~Jon Rivera
Many hours were spent playing this game in my childhood. I didn't have but a dozen games for my 64 at the time, which is probably why I have such fond memories of it. The game has a lot of flaws but is sure an enjoyable gem.
I've never owned this game but we rented it a bunch when I was a kid. I have no idea how I used to progress in this game because I didn't know English very well as a kid, but hey, I still remember how much fun I used to have playing this. Awesome review. I'm bingewatching a ton of your videos!
I love these videos, I started collecting N64 for nastalgic reasons. Before I purchase a game I look it up on here and I get hit with that same feeling of nastalgia, I really appreciate how much work you put into these videos, they are so fun to watch! Keep up the good work Glenn can't wait for the next one.
As a kid I did not have this game but I remember critics did not love it. After I got everdrive I play this game this year and its very good. It's not perfect as Goldeneye but it's close. Music is great, levels are fun, missions and gadgets are well designed. I don't know why critics did not love this game, It's good even today so what was the problem back then ?
I remember I got this game for Christmas, '99. Played it until the Embassy level, put it down until I played DK64. Then, I picked it up again in the summer and absolutely fell in love with it.
I remember reading EGM and seeing the laser rappel screen shots and being so hyped for this game. While I did have a great time with the game, I do remember walking around the first level for ever trying to figure out where the agent was then trying to figure out how to get through the tunnel gate. But these struggles remain found memories as they were one of my first experiences finishing an entire video game.
When I was 13, while visiting my dad during the summer, they had a party. This 40-something year old dude I'd never met brought a Playstation and MGS and played it on the living room tv. I was pretty blown away by it. I really wanted it, but didn't have a Playstation. That weekend, I'd convinced my mother to stop in at our local (unfortunately long-since closed) video game store so I could look around. On one of the little tvs they had setup for people to test games before buying, Mission Impossible was running. I started it up and the first level immediately reminded me of MGS. I was sold. The game was pretty cheap at that point, and I was able to convince my mother to buy it. Unfortunately, it was no MGS, but I did play it a lot. It was the first game I'd played with a disguise mechanic, and that alone made it pretty cool. But yeah, super clunky controls.
+N64 Glenn Plant LOL, sorry my ass. More like "HUEHUEHUE I WILL HAVE ALL YOUR SLEEP POINTS, ALL YOUR SLEEP R BELONG TO MEEEEE" Awesome vids, keep up your hard work, good sir!
Three years later and I'm in the same situation as you haha, I just wanted to know what this guy had to say abt turok and now I'm revisiting all my favorite 64 games
I remembering renting this from blockbuster for the N64. And I loved it. I noticed the clunky controls but that really didn't deter me. I absolutely loved the 2nd mission where u have to get the drink, find the ambassador, and the facemaker etc.Awesome review man. Brought back a lot of memories.thanks for this
Also, now I'll be humming the embassy music for weeks. Mission impossible 64 was one of those games that when I was a young kid with my new 64 I just couldn't quite get the feel for, although I always had fond memories of my dad playing it. The about 3 years ago I was going through one of my "Lets play the shit out of old 64 games" phases, and ended up getting completely addicted to it. I can't compare it to Goldeneye, but it was a great game in it's own right.
Yeah the controls were a little clunky and the ai was quite weak. But I enjoyed the variety of levels and styles of play, the music, the story, the audio and video intros and cut scenes. And the richness in background detail on many levels and depth of ambition and of course a great range of gadgets. This games got a lot going for it. I waited ages for this got it on release day and thoroughly enjoyed it. So much variety of level types. Great effort.
one series that destroys this game is Sony's Syphon Filter games, I think at the time they were the only games to compete with metal gear solid 1 , Syphon Filter 1 was so similar to metal gear in many ways, even down to fighting the Chopper in the snow level
I remember this game being hyped a lot in magazines. When the game finally came out I rented it from Blockbuster and was really disappointed. It was a solid 6/10 for me at the time. No where near what the hype built up. Looking back, it was definitely better than I felt at the time but I was so let down when I finally played the game after all the hype that had been created from it, I never bothered to actually buy the game.
I also bought the game when I was younger sometime near its release date. I Did hear some of the hype rumors but the thing that made me finally choose it was the cool looking Red N64 Box it came in. The color made the game stand out on between all the black N64 boxes in the store I remember Haha. But shure the game has it faults but I had a lot of fun with it, and played it a lot. Great review by the way Glenn, and thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I wish they had done a mission: Impossible 2 game that was inspired by the movie M:I-2. Could you imagine the gameplay, open game with Rock climbing sequence only to get to top and have a helicopter shoot a fake rocket message down at your feet with sunglasses hidden inside telling you your mission before the sunglasses explode. Then you got some mask wearing Intel gathering, shootouts, motorcycle car chases and fist fights. The movie plot itself and the way its directed comes off like a good videogame.
Great review, man. This is one of those games I rented back in the day, but still remember playing vividly to this day. I'm not completely sure why it stuck with me so much, but I think you definitely pointed out the probable reasons: The gadgets, the disguise mechanic, and even that embassy music. Might have to go back and give this another shot one day, maybe be able to beat it this time lol Hope you have a great weekend, bud.
When I was a kid I found the later missions quite hard. I don't think I even finished the game. But you are right, the score was good, that's what brought me to your video. Was day dreaming about old n64 games and I remembered the piano song
I played this game as a kid in middle school and I enjoyed playing it. I do remember some parts of the being a huge pain in the ass. Cheers mate for the review video by the way.
I remember playing this game in 1999, I was 9 years old and for me this was literally impossible to play, not mentioning the fact that the language was French and I'm Spanish. But despite all that, it still brings me very good memories.
I remember enjoying this game more than I should have as a kid. The controls were screwy, hit detection and targeting system were horribly flawed, and the objectives were vague and obscured. The game was nowhere near the same level as Goldeneye. I didn't like that it was in third person viewpoint either. What I did like most was the embassy mission where it felt like you were at a party while in disguise. It was the puzzle aspect of the game that I felt was the best part.
This was game was such a mixed bag but I couldn't help but love it despite its flaws, for being so unlike anything else on the system. Picked it up on ebay a few years ago for nostalgia and yea..it hasn't exactly aged well but I still had a weirdly fun time playing through it again. Definitely hit some major frustrations along the way though due to the controls and inconsistencies in design. I think this review is pretty spot-on.
Ah, my first video game ever... After playing it as an adult, I see its flaws more apparently than I did as a kid, but it still holds a special place in my tiny black heart. It just has an atmosphere that, even still, I can't find quite like it anywhere else. Not to mention the music, and variety in the mission structure. It's a shame it's not downloadable on the Wii. :(
As a kid I loved this game. It was so much fun and so much fun things to do. I tried replaying it recently. It had not aged very well. Awful controls and frustrating game mechanics made it impossible to play.
It was enjoyable. I thought for disguises was a lot of fun. It was frustrating though. FYI, the game is 96 Mb. The composer crafted the music in the highest quality available at the time and then compressed it.
I remember renting this way back in the day, but unfortunately, I had already played GoldenEye, and the lack of action plus the poor controls disappointed my young mind. That was back in '98, though, so I think a re-play might be in order, as my young self couldn't grasp the finer strategies within. Great video!
Dome-Candy Games thank you! its worth playing, yes it was disappointing then but now you can see it as a standalone game and it does have some very cool moment and levels
I honestly liked this game as a kid much better than Goldeneye. This game is short but it never felt repetitive and with the many ways to beat a level it had good replay value for me.
It's a game that if you didn't play it when it first came out, there's practically no way you can fully enjoy it now. It's just not that good of a game when compared to other games on the N64...but I love it.
I thought it was a fun game, not as fun as golden eye but I loved the face changer and secret devices you get. Plus the voices were funny. Love when he says hush when you shoot someone. I just got this game again after getting my n64 and I agree it is just as fun as it was to play back then
Ahhh you know I've been looking forward to this review. Anyways, I love this game, and I think a lot of it is nostalgia. I wonder if I could go play it with not having played it in the past. The game definitely does have it's obvious flaws, but the overall charm of the game, just great. I like the atmosphere through most of the levels too. I also love the fact that It's not just a go through and kill everyone in the level, the fact that there are actually objectives that require item use and the face changer and what not. Excited to see this video and you did a great job! I leave you with the witty quotes of Mission Impossible Mission: Impossible on the N64--Witty Quotes Edition
Just got this through the post and it does live up to my memoires of being pretty hard, that and the strange re-playability with the Embassy level, for some reason I think it the best part of the game.
If the walking and running would have been controlled more smoothly and Eathans body not show in that view, the game would have been better! It's just too stiff, but I have it and love it.
Like Tom Cruise, Matt Damon opted out of the Bourne Identity PS3 game for similar reasons. Stating that he decided he didn't want to do a violent game that kids would play (paraphrasing) .. but regarding both actors, I don't buy their reasoning behind it. I think in both situations it was most likely down to money and how much they wanted to be compensated to take part in reprising the role in these games, especially for Damon if there was motion capture work involved.
Mission Impossible drove me up the wall as a kid, but I look back at it with - perhaps undue - fondness because of the dev's "throw it in" attitude. It created a sloppy, unpolished game, but one that constantly tried new things and gave you new mechanics and scenarios. It reminds me of the original MGS in that regard; the core gameplay constantly being broken up by novel segments that kept the overall experience fresh, at least on the first playthrough. You get diverse experiences like this in indie games now but rarely big budget boxed games. You might get an on-rails vehicle section or a turret section but they tend to be cut from the same cloth.
Used to play this one over and over as a kid. I am not sure how I had the patience to do so having tried to play it several times in recent years. It is not a bad game but I would rather play Golden Eye like most people.
I actually remember when I got this game. I bought it right after summer vacation right after school, hoping it would be like Goldeneye. So unfortunately I always get the bad taste of school start when I think about this game. Another problem compared to Goldeneye was that the missions was a lot more complex compared to Goldeneye, and since I barely understood a word of English back then, I had to constantly call the Nintendo hotline to get help, and even then, I believe I actually used an Action Replay back then to get through the game.
***** Here in Denmark?.. Meh. I once visited them actually. Most of them didn't really seem to know much themself. They just looked up everything on their computers. The worst thing was the waiting. There would usually be a line of 5 people in front of you and I'm not kidding when I say it could take more than an hour to get through. Well.. At least it was free to call them.
yeah it was free here in the UK too which is cool, i remember the blockbuster line being like 50p a minute to call and it would take like 15 minutes to get through their automated menus. my dad went nuts once when we racked up like a £30 bill ringing them
***** It's funny actually. After I moved last time. I now live 100m from where the old Club Nintendo used to be. I think they closed down around 2003-04 or something, but still xD I could have ringing them through a tin-can if I wanted xD
I want to thank you for your compliments on the music in this game. I enjoyed composing every moment of it, and I’m thrilled there are people who recognize that effort. It was an overwhelming challenge given the limitations of that platform.
Michael Pummell the embassy function has one of the most iconic pieces of music on the console - everyones loves it :)
Yes I remember reading about what you did in the Nintendo power magazine. You recorded it with the best quality you could add and compressed it. When I first read about it and then played the game, I automatically thought of Factor 5 compression technology. I have always wondered how you did that. I used to simply stop playing the game at the embassy level so that I could walk around and listen to the piano song
@@odiwalker3973 I loved that piano song
I loved this game so much! Thank you for being part of my sonic youth.
Tom Cruise hates violence in Videogames, but he'll happily star in violent movies...
What a hypocrite
Exactly what I thought when i heard that. Well, he is a scientologist. Darn spagetti monsters
+Ghost1170 Spaghetti monster is Pastafarianism, Scientology make them look normal lol
+Ghost1170 The guy is crazy... Even his woman left him because of that lol
swilco266 No, I'm almost sure it's still in scientology. I'm pretty fucking sure of it actually. Though, you aren't wrong with Pastafarianism, but I feel that's more a parody on religions.
zanychelly Good looks can hook em, but he sure can't keep em
Highly under rated game.
+Steven Russell I wouldn't say the same for the PS1 version. The voice acting ruined it but the N64 version is another story.
Embassy was the best level by far.
Truly indeed the first embassy function mission
Looking back at this game and the whole mechanic with the disguises, this might be where IO Interactive got some inspiration from for the Hitman games.
Michiel Kroder thats a very solid point! well spotted!
+Michiel Kroder even planting explosives on the submarine screams hitman.
ya as I seen that part, it reminded me of the that level from Hitman: Contracts, that was a cool level, very tense
I never thought of that before, it makes sense. God I loved this game, especially the outfits. I also love Hitman, it is good to see a company making your favorite games. They should make an HD reboot of this game.
If you liked this game, play Spy Fiction on PS2
The way the piano music swapped in and out with the level music depending on where you were was a really nice touch.
I played the hell out of the party mission as a kid. Awesome game.
I find it very fun too
Man, I remember the Official Nintendo Magazine promoting the absolute hell out of this game, proclaiming it as "the next Goldeneye". What went wrong?

Watching this review brought back some good memories of playing this game with my friend in Elementary School. I liked this game a lot.
Tom Cruise doesn't believe in the violence in video games but yet makes violence in movies. Makes about as much sense as nonsense makes.
Completing the second mission made you feel like a spy more than in any game to me.
I LOVED this game! I even beat both modes. I also got it for PS1 but haven't had the luxury of playing it yet. Definitely agree with this review. The interrogation level was what I believe the hardest level in the game.

One of the greatest games of all time. The score is sheer bliss and I loved the diversity of the gameplay and levels.
This was considered one of the worst games on the system man ...
@@weskarp7643 Um, the game got mostly 6s and 7s. Far from one of the worst games on the system.
I had fun. It had some really cool missions for the time. It's almost a proto-Hitman game, in a way.
I loved this game. It was really sketchy but that sort of added to its charm lol

It could have been during the hype to bash video game violence. I think his excuse to look good was to say something stoopidz
Ghost1170
i wouldn't doubt it and it doesn't make him look good like he thinks it did it makes him look very stupid
Loretta Thomas Obviously to us it makes him a hypocrite but to the majority it'll look good because the majority are fucking idiots.
Ghost1170
ain't that the truth
This was a really fun game during it's generation.
This was one of my first games for the system and easily one of my favorites.
Mine too I love this game I didn't know anything about this game and then awesome
@Big White Duck it's not bad it's pretty good actually

I remember renting this one over and over at Blockbuster. I would love to replay it again as part of a collection or something.
I loved this game. It had depth for an early N64 title.
I used to order the vhs tapes of the series from borders.
When I played the embassy level I was blown away by the realism and immersion.

It was because so much more was promised and what we got was janky and the pacing of the game is way off. It’s a fun game but not a patch on goldeneye
MI alongside Winback, 007 Goldeneye and The World is not Enough are my all time favorite Spy action games in the Nintendo 64

Spy Fiction, Splinter Cell and Hitman as well and some of the PS2 Lupin the Third games.
I loved this game when I was young, however: The biggest battle is indeed with the controls.
Thank you very much for doing my request. Ive been looking for a good video review of this game for awhile.
TerriblePain glad i could help!
I remember renting this from Blockbuster way back in the day. Loved it!! MAN do I miss those days!!
Amen to that, bygone era for sure
Wow I had no idea that this games production was so rocky. Awesome video man!
That music at the start brought back so many memories
Omg the embassy song. lol I still remember it well over a decade after playing this game.
I loved it for having such diverse gameplay.
I was raised a Goldeneye boy, which kicked off a life long love affair with the James Bond franchise.
This game is one of the fondest I have on the N64. I just bought it with 100+ more N64 games
Great buy!
ya know, I like ol' Glenn Plant. I like how you review the n64 classics. good stuff. thanks for the reviews 👍
And thank you for taking the time to
Watch James!
This was a bit of a guilty pleasure game for me. I did enjoy it and still have a copy of it. May go back to it sometime for a nostalgia kick.
Lucareon Vee its so worth it :)
I remember when my friend rented this. None of us could figure out what we were supposed to do on the very first mission. Good times...
Yeah it wasn't al aye clear and required a lot of trial and error!
I rather enjoyed this game despite its flaws.
I played this game back in the day for the ps1, never got to finish it, but I did enjoy. Nice review btw.
I really enjoyed this game! It was so different and unique back then which is what made it so good and memorable.
I rented the game back when it first released.
But I much preferred MGS, Syphon Filter, and even WinBack.
Mgs is far superior but I always found this game fun
I loved the game.
I enjoyed it back then.
I don't quite remember it. Nor the music.
But we enjoyed it on our N64 with my friends.
I remember seeing amazing early screen shots of this in n64 magazines! Needless to say it never quite panned out how they portrayed it.
Yeah it went through total development hell
I actually preferred this to GoldenEye. The latter was just a shooter, whereas this had more sneaking and hacking and stuff.
Poe Ghost quite an interesting game to get as a first game - what made you want / get this?
As a kid I loved this game. It was so much fun and so much fun things to do. I tried replaying it recently. It had not aged very well. Awful controls and frustrating game mechanics made it impossible to play.
It was enjoyable. I thought for disguises was a lot of fun. It was frustrating though. FYI, the game is 96 Mb. The composer crafted the music in the highest quality available at the time and then compressed it.
The composer actually watched this video and commented below - check it out
I remember renting this way back in the day, but unfortunately, I had already played GoldenEye, and the lack of action plus the poor controls disappointed my young mind. That was back in '98, though, so I think a re-play might be in order, as my young self couldn't grasp the finer strategies within. Great video!
Dome-Candy Games thank you! its worth playing, yes it was disappointing then but now you can see it as a standalone game and it does have some very cool moment and levels
i loved this game actually. one of my favorites
"Way to go!" "Gotcha!" This brings back so much memories! :-)
This was one of the only few n64 games I had when I was younger and i just recently beat it and it was better than i remembered
I honestly liked this game as a kid much better than Goldeneye. This game is short but it never felt repetitive and with the many ways to beat a level it had good replay value for me.
After reading the comments I'm so happy that I wasn't the only one obsessed with the Embassy Level. I had a lot of fun with it.
KryptKicker5 even the composer for the song commented on this video so we all share the love :)
***** lol that's awesome man! Classy reviews bro. really dig your channel.
It's a game that if you didn't play it when it first came out, there's practically no way you can fully enjoy it now. It's just not that good of a game when compared to other games on the N64...but I love it.
I remember the hype, playing the first level and hating it. Im much more patient nowadays, I might pick up a copy
It’s worth playing through I think. It’s not MGS but it’s still fun
I thought it was a fun game, not as fun as golden eye but I loved the face changer and secret devices you get. Plus the voices were funny. Love when he says hush when you shoot someone. I just got this game again after getting my n64 and I agree it is just as fun as it was to play back then
It had a number of good ideas and concepts taken from the movie but could never quite figure out how to implement them
I felt that you were a little hard on the game, when I played it as it came out I got addicted. Not for long, in that, you are correct sir.
I leave you with the witty quotes of Mission Impossible Mission: Impossible on the N64--Witty Quotes Edition
foolio1990 haha that video was funny :)
Just got this through the post and it does live up to my memoires of being pretty hard, that and the strange re-playability with the Embassy level, for some reason I think it the best part of the game.
Ryan McGivern i love that mission too - think thats my fan one in the game
Tom Cruise didn't want his lickness to be used in video games because of....violence? Wow...now I want to punch him...HAHAH XD
TheXBRGUY as well as being a scientologist so that deserves another slap haha
*****
XD Ya!
***** that doesnt even make sense hes a actor in violent movies....damn people are dumb.
***** shut up!
You know what, he'll likely take it as a confirmation of his stance. I mean all those violent videogames must have made you so violent!
Looks fun! I remember seeing this on the shelves, but never actually saw gameplay of it. Seems a little like a proto-Hitman game.
This is one of my favorite games on N64 when I was a kid
I really liked this too
3:28 - Looks like that supply room is chock full of boxed Super Nintendos, eh?
Really loved this game. It was like being transported into another world.
If the walking and running would have been controlled more smoothly and Eathans body not show in that view, the game would have been better! It's just too stiff, but I have it and love it.
N64 Glenn Plant which mission was probably your favorite in this game I liked the one with the sniper.
Captain N were the nintendo hotline any good wit help for this game?

Here in Denmark?..

It's funny actually. After I moved last time. I now live 100m from where the old Club Nintendo used to be. I think they closed down around 2003-04 or something, but still xD I could have ringing them through a tin-can if I wanted xD
