My 64 crapped out like 15 years ago but this game was among my favorite too. As a kid that liked The Titanic, James Bond and reptiles, this was my jam.
Glenn, your channel has been my one stop shop for information to help me track down interesting titles and complete my N64 collection. Love that era of gaming and your videos, thank you for all your hard work!
Been playing this game a lot lately. I have obvious nostalgia glasses on while playing because I do have fond memories of it. It's not perfect at all, it's actually pretty bad, but something about it still draws me in today, I'm trying to 100% it and I'm pretty close. After spending a lot more time on this game as an adult, I see this game is incredibly frustrating and is a downright troll. Take for instance the Chinese level where just before getting a remote, there is a platform with a trap door, if you stand on it, you are dropped to a lower platform suspended in the air that has no escape. You are softlocked. Your only option is to jump off and kill yourself. The game rubs it in that you almost got the remote but you just had to fall for a troll. And many other instances. The bonus stages are full of trolls, and I easily spend more time in here than I do collecting the remotes. But oddly enough I am invested, it's captivated me enough that I genuinely want to beat it 100%. Will let you know how disappointed I am when I beat it :)
Funny enough, Gex was my favorite character when I was a little kid. The jokes flew right over my head but still made me laugh. I loved his one liners and I still remember them.
Great British bake off. Gakes, just stick them on a playit. I can't remember the last time! Takes me back to my childhood. Just something quite retro about Great British Bake off.. reminded me of eggs, or Neggs - his prints are on the cartridge too. On the N64 game. Not sickly.. I wasn't intending it to be however it turned out, but that's the British Media.
the ps1 version has cut scenes explaining the story at the start of the game with an ending that has a star wars parody... the n64 version however... it has nothing?... no in game cut scenes, no stills with text, no intro of any sort...nothing? does it even have an ending or does it just go to the credits after beating rez?...
I loved the game for N64, but only because I could only afford to have one system at the time. Also, when I was 10 years old, I thought Gex was hilarious. As an avid N64 collector now, it was essential for this to be included in my set due to nostalgia, but it really is a shame that the port was not given more care.
Personally, I feel the PS1 version is superior because of Gex's one-liners and personality. Not to mention his voice change in G64. The gameplay is no different, thankfully, but I just feel that Gex's persona just makes the PS1 version better
+Rexcor Jungmir Actually, the UK version of Gex 3D and 64 have both the same voices. Leslie Phillips voices the UK version while the US version has Dana Gould.
I think someone should purchase the rights to all the forgotten mascots and put them in a game together as parody's of themselves. Two instant entries would be gex and bubsy.
Gex hasn't shown up because his shtick is old. These days, wise-cracking one-liner fountains come a dime a dozen. Hell, even when they didn't, the "platforming animal with attitude" archetype had oversaturated the market. Without some amazing writers, I doubt Gex could even survive in this era.
I’ve been thinking about this game for literally ever & couldn’t think of what the name was. Finally, I woke up just a few minutes ago & knew it was a gecko out of nowhere and finally got to look it up. This is so much nostalgia. I played this game so fuckin much as a kid 😂
As a teen, I played the N64 version first, then played the PS1 version . . .I immediately used my N64 version for target practice with my pellet gun. Damn I'm old, that was so long ago . . . .at any rate . . .I think the N64 version is the one most people remember, if I'm not mistaken. With that being the case, the memory of Gex just isn't as strong. That's if they even remember who, or what, Gex is. Even gamers around my age have only the vaguest and blurriest of memories of this character. Some characters stick, Banjo/Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro The Dragon (often seen in cosplays at cons) and of course Sonic and Mario . . . .others, Gex, Earthworm Jim, Vector Man, etc . . .just . . .wear out quickly :(
The difference between the British and American releases with regards to the voice actors is interesting. Such is seldom done today...English is English.
By the 7th console generation I feel like overall interest in 3D platformers had pretty much died out among the mainstream and younger audience in favor of the next call of duty clone.I think underdog platformers that were never well known to begin with like Gex are probably going to continue to be forgotten.
+Larry Bundy Jr Danny John Jules was on Gex 3; 3D/64 had Leslie Phillips. But yeah, the PAL versions of 64 and the 3 port do have the changed voice actors as with the PS1 originals.
I remember a one liner( never by marmalade from a guy in a top hat) might have been the ps1 version but I still have no idea what that is from or what it means
It was one of my all time favorite games on the PS1, along with Deep Cover Gecko, even though that, yes, I know that both games are not without their flaws and yes, I do know that the camera is quite faulty in both games. My favorite parts of the game were the first Kung Fu Theater Mao Tse Tongue level, which starts off in a street, with music that suited that level really well for me (but not in the PC and N64 versions sadly, where you get the same music from the other Kung Fu theater level (Don't remember the name, I know it's been a while).), the In Drag Net bonus level with the subway train, which I found rad, and even the Rezopolis level, that I found very dark, moody and atmospheric, especially the music, that makes me dream about flying through my hometown Dortmund at night. That was the time that, with the releases of the PS1 version of the original Gex, as well as Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Pandemonium, Crystal Dynamics had been in a renassaince (even at the time when Eidos bought them out in 1998), where they've released a ton of cool and very memorable games such as this one, except for the N64 version, which sure, wasn't a great port, but I guess the people at Realtime Associates, who ported the original game to the N64, sorta tried their best to make the N64 port play closely to the PS1 version, but nah, it sorta failed. And sure, DCG did end the Gex trilogy on a positive note, but I do have fears that since the Gex IP had been in the hands of Square Enix, who had fucked up Eidos after buying them out, a Gex reboot would be a great disaster.
A permanent memory via Gex 64: I rented this game from a local Blockbuster store when I was 8 and one of the levels I played the most was Scream TV, the level that's like a haunted mansion. One of the in-game quotes from Gex during that level are "Don't take career advice from Joe Piscopo." He said it...a lot. One day my dad hears him say it and angrily snaps "if I hear him say that fucking Joe Pesci crap one more time I'm gonna smash that TV" such a dad moment he didn't even get the right actor, I muted the TV thinking "what's he got against joe pesci?" 😂 (plus I was 8 so I didn't even get the original joke in the first place)
I loved these games growing up. I haven't replayed them although I am a big fan of 3D platformers. Scared nostalgia might bite me this time. Back then I played tons of Spyro and Gex, almost no Crash (which I honestly discovered a lot later in my life) but I'd be happy with a remake of these games. I mean, Gex was like Conker's bad fur day before that was even released.
I wouldn't mind Gex having a comeback about now, there's so much new material to make fun of in today's world.. And as long as they make a good platformer/adventure game out of it, and the game itself is fun and not a joke in itself....I agree, it would have been nice if they took more care in this port and fleshed things out a more. I believe I owned Deep Cover Gecko for the N64 and not being a teenager yet at the time, I remember enjoying it for the most part! Great Review though Glenn! You are basically Mr. N64 of the TH-cam! Keep it up, and Cheers!
This game was the very first time I had ever heard of Gex as a character, but the fact that the title of the game was made of two parts separated by a colon, it kind of suggested that there were other Gex games already out there. I was curious about it back before the N64 became a retro console, but never got my hands on it, and I'm still interested, but might reconsider the system I try to get it on.
Actually, Gex 2 didn't use TR's engine, it used an original codebase that was later used in many following Crystal Dynamics games, such as Akuji the Heartless, the Soul Reaver half of the Legacy of Kain series and Project Snowblind. It'd be more accurate to say that Tomb Raider (namely the games starting with Legend, when CrystalD overtook the series) used the Gex engine.
Glenndust, baby - In your video you say that Gex 3D/64 is running on the same game engine as Tomb Raider. Where have you heard this from? I'm a big TR fan - and NEVER heard this. I know that Eidos owned Core Design & Crystal Dynamics, but I think it would be unusual for two teams to share game engine. Source please.
I wouldn't say they are fond memories as I didn't like this as much as other 3D platformers on the N64 but it was okay. I think maybe I will pick it up on PSN though, don't think I can deal with hearing those few one-liners over and over again anymore.
I always felt like the controls on the N64 version felt horribly like non analog PSX controls, pre dual shock. After seeing the great Nightdive studio remasters of Turok and Shadowman,I would love to see them tackle the Gex series. Perhaps as a trilogy pack, with some upgrades and the original audio put back in, maybe even remix some of the world designs similar to how Turok had. I would totally buy it on Switch for my daughter as she loves playing Gex on her N64. For now, however, the best way to play the Gex series is on a PSC where you can have the whole series in one place.
Never actually played this game before, but it kind of looks a little like a crash bandicoot game ( not as good of course) just in that sense of a level warp room, also wasn't there a second gex released for n64 ?
I like the PS1 version, but yeah, the camera is a pain in the ass. The reason for Gex not making a comeback: What more could you do with him? He's been through all different levels such as Space, a volcano, Cartoon land, etc. Where else could Gex go to?
Hah. I completely agree with that last bit you said. I LOVED LOVED LOVED this game when I was a kid. Obsessed with it. I tried playing it again last year though, and yea, I couldn't bring myself to finish it. As you said the biggest problem is the camera and I guess I just never noticed it as much back then as I do now. Nostalgia is indeed a terrible thing sometimes. :( Aw well. My eyes widened though when you said there was a PC version. I do need to try that out now. Hopefully I'll have better luck running it then I did the PC version of Shadows of the Empire.
I think gex isn't being remade because his latest games were 3D platformer and those aren't so big now. Although a remake of the original or a new 2D gex would be awesome.
I suspect that perhaps Conker's Bad Fur Day was the nail in the Gex coffin. It seems, in retrospect, Gex's personality is held back by the E-rating. Perhaps his creators considered creating a more mature Gex to capitalize on his tendency to make fun of pop culture, but realized that at the end of the day it would have been a clone of Conker, which was from the same studio that made Gex's platforming seem horrible by virtue of Banjo Kazooie.
+ZergSwarms1 Conker was nowhere near as good as Banjo Kazooie though. Once the novelty of it's humor wears off Conker is a very mediocre and frustrating game Gex is a solid game with or without the references. Besides we all know that tomb raider is the the sole reason why crystal dynamics abandoned Gex and all their other ips it had nothing to do with Banjo or Conker.
Yea the ps1 version is better but the n64 version is still fun. Annoying camera but I still enjoy playing the game to this day. Also the n64 version has an exclusive titanic Level, which is pretty badass
I feel that gex might make a come back into a ds game because the Ds is a very basic child friendly console but when it comes to PlayStation with how gaming is now it's all about realism, gex wouldn't grab the attention on the gaming population
Gex: Enter the Gecko for the N64 is the prime example of how to NOT make a port. The game has such a terrible framerate that makes difficult to make jumps. Good thing that Gex 3 was a better port. And I think Gex didn't appeared since gex 3 because there is no interest for it. Nowadays, Eidos (the owner of the franchise's mark) published a note that they will let people use Gex's trademark and will support the developers, if they send the project to Eidos and they accepted it. This has potential to be pretty good.
I don't know for sure since I can't check easily(I'm in the US) but I haven't heard anything about all the classics being removed. I've only some here and there get removed due to rights like the R-Type games.
I remember this game for being completely panned by magazines. Gex was hardly memorable or iconic a game (maybe for the wrong reasons). It will stay consigned to videogame hell hopefully.
Gex never seemed like a mascot to quality games. Granted, I have very little experience with him, but I've never heard anyone sing high praises of his adventures. Probably best to leave him in the past.
As a kid I spent a ton of time playing the first Gex game and In my opinion its a classic 2D platformer. These 3D outings just never had the same charm to me. Honesty I think Gex was a solid mascot with potential and It would be nice to see a reboot if they did it in the same style as the first game.
I think the key games that you haven't done that I'd love to see your opinion on are: ODT and LEGO Racers. The former is quite obscure and noone seems to remember its existence. The latter is just a classic. Aside from those, I'll be looking forward to seeing reviews of more obscure stuff. I have over 100 games in my collection, so it's nice to get recommendations for obscure stuff that I may have skipped over. I picked up the BattleTanx games and Indiana Jones because of you. Hell, I didn't even know there was an N64 Indiana Jones game until I saw your review!
@6:23 In spite of the fogging, I still think the graphics are far superior than the Playstation version. Yes, the Playstation has sharper textures, but it isn't an issue because blurriness works better for cartooney style games like this and Mario 64. Sharp textures work better for gritty games like Quake and Duke Nukem. Plus the colours seem more vibrant in this version.
I have nothing but great memories with this N64 game =)
Same feeling
I absolutely loved this game!! I still play it today on my n64
Jeffrey Schwanke do you still? I do
Me as well and it needs the remake love every other popular game is getting. Nonetheless, I’d still play this no matter what happens.
My 64 crapped out like 15 years ago but this game was among my favorite too. As a kid that liked The Titanic, James Bond and reptiles, this was my jam.
Same here
Gex is a really underrated character he should come back for another game
Indeed
They should put him into Super Smash.
fuck no game is trash
@@bellz222 I think Davy Chameleon from Chameleon Twist would be a better moveset (with its original game's design but improved in HD of course)
Loved this game as a kid. One of my most played N64 games back then.
Glenn, your channel has been my one stop shop for information to help me track down interesting titles and complete my N64 collection. Love that era of gaming and your videos, thank you for all your hard work!
This game was my childhood
Oh is it Gex night? I’ve waited for this my entire life!
TH-cam recommendation algorithm giving me this in 2021.
I ain't complaining about this older style of YT content.

Beat the game. It was okay.
This game is as crazy as Christmas at Jackie Chan’s house.
😂
Funny enough, Gex was my favorite character when I was a little kid. The jokes flew right over my head but still made me laugh. I loved his one liners and I still remember them.
“Is that a gun?”
“No. It’s gex.”

I for one would love to see the Gex Games available on XBOX. I loved playing Gex 64 on the N64.
I loved the game for N64, but only because I could only afford to have one system at the time. Also, when I was 10 years old, I thought Gex was hilarious. PurpleAura same one liners too or were these stripped in the U.K. version?
Out of the way!! ROSEANNE!!!
somebodys been drinking the tap water at Jerry Garcia's house
ITS TAIL TIME
Missed opportunity to have a green cartridge release.
I think someone should purchase the rights to all the forgotten mascots and put them in a game together as parody's of themselves. Two instant entries would be gex and bubsy.
Outcasts
Years later, Bubsy came back somehow and not Gex. :(
What could pawsibly go wrong?
Gex hasn't shown up because his shtick is old. These days, wise-cracking one-liner fountains come a dime a dozen. Hell, even when they didn't, the "platforming animal with attitude" archetype had oversaturated the market. Without some amazing writers, I doubt Gex could even survive in this era.
Fuck off
Lol yea, what he said
Two very mad gecko fanatics ^
Gex was a great childhood game.
Always a good day to see another Glenn review.
I’ve been thinking about this game for literally ever & couldn’t think of what the name was. Finally, I woke up just a few minutes ago & knew it was a gecko out of nowhere and finally got to look it up. This is so much nostalgia. I played this game so fuckin much as a kid 😂
Haha perhaps some divine inspiration helped you find it 👍
As a teen, I played the N64 version first, then played the PS1 version . . .I immediately used my N64 version for target practice with my pellet gun.
Some characters stick, Banjo/Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro The Dragon (often seen in cosplays at cons) and of course Sonic and Mario . . . .others, Gex, Earthworm Jim, Vector Man, etc . . .just . . .wear out quickly :(
The Playstation version was more popular
Earthworm Jim is not anywhere near forgotten. He's still a somewhat popular character.
While Crystal Dynamics published, Gex enter the gecko was distributed by Midway
This is on sale on PSN at the moment.
The difference between the British and American releases with regards to the voice actors is interesting. Such is seldom done today...English is English.
Dang man so nostalgic...I remember playing this game on a Jampak at first and then renting it all the time
By the 7th console generation I feel like overall interest in 3D platformers had pretty much died out among the mainstream and younger audience in favor of the next call of duty clone.I think underdog platformers that were never well known to begin with like Gex are probably going to continue to be forgotten.
Is Danny John Jules' voice in the UK version of the N64 port?
But White James Bond suit Glenn? Surely you don't mean a Saturday Night Fever suit? :D

I used to think this was the geico lizard
Wait.... There more in the PS version??? I grew up on this game and now I have to figure out how to play the former versions.
Emulation
It's TAIL TIME!
Those stone faces terrified me as a kid
I loved these games growing up. I haven't replayed them although I am a big fan of 3D platformers. Scared nostalgia might bite me this time. Awesome video man, really appreciated every second of it. You have a new follower with just this video. Cheers!
Loved the little guy back in te old tymes

Can you please review Gex 3?
see what I can do
I had this for the N64, it was a decent platformer
Gex was advertised well, but I never had the desire play it.
yeah not the funnest franchise IMO
Love the Ol' Gexster! I have fond memories even though I only played the demo level Scream TV.
Is the N64 version of Gex 3 censored/missing content from the PS1 version?
Actually, Gex 2 didn't use TR's engine, it used an original codebase that was later used in many following Crystal Dynamics games, such as Akuji the Heartless, the Soul Reaver half of the Legacy of Kain series and Project Snowblind. It'd be more accurate to say that Tomb Raider (namely the games starting with Legend, when CrystalD overtook the series) used the Gex engine.
CAMERA is god awful.. but i sill adore this game.. much prefer the ps1 version though.
I remember playing this as a kid and found it funny. Gex is sadly dead.
I think Gex left gaming and got a cozy desk job in the insurance industry.
04:02 - Troubling Uranus? They really went there, hahaha!
Many things were not off bounds to them! 👍
Glenndust, baby - In your video you say that Gex 3D/64 is running on the same game engine as Tomb Raider. Where have you heard this from? I'm a big TR fan - and NEVER heard this. Gex was fun to play as a kid. I think you hit the nail right on the head. It had some cool aspects but quite a few set backs .
I remember getting dizzy playing this game.
Why the decreased draw distance?
gex and croc both need a comeback.

+CYANIDE_III There was. Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko
I have nothing but great memories of this game! As well.
I love characters who always say one liners.
Gex Enter The Gecko is #EPIC
I like the PS1 version, but yeah, the camera is a pain in the ass.
The reason for Gex not making a comeback: What more could you do with him? He's been through all different levels such as Space, a volcano, Cartoon land, etc. Where else could Gex go to?
He could go to the internet. You could have an M-rated "Gex" game go to Pornhub or something :P
Loved all the gex games. Definitely one of my favorite series.
This game's charm is timeless.
I have more nostalgia for 3do gex as that’s where o got my first fix
Hah. I completely agree with that last bit you said. I LOVED LOVED LOVED this game when I was a kid. Obsessed with it. I think gex isn't being remade because his latest games were 3D platformer and those aren't so big now.
Although a remake of the original or a new 2D gex would be awesome.
We'll see after my mates, Yooka and Laylee, bring us back.
I liked the jokes in game and 8ys parodies sad this series didn't really take off I liked it as a kid
The soundtrack from 5:00 is absolutely brilliant!
What 3D n64 game doesnt have fogging?
IT'S TAIL TIME.
I suspect that perhaps Conker's Bad Fur Day was the nail in the Gex coffin. It seems, in retrospect, Gex's personality is held back by the E-rating. Yea the ps1 version is better but the n64 version is still fun. Annoying camera but I still enjoy playing the game to this day. Also the n64 version has an exclusive titanic Level, which is pretty badass
Loving the videos. Can't wait for you to cover the Goemon games.
+DB Pooper me too they are great games I love
Gex is voiced by Dana Gould in the American version, and Leslie Phillips in the British release.
I feel that gex might make a come back into a ds game because the Ds is a very basic child friendly console but when it comes to PlayStation with how gaming is now it's all about realism, gex wouldn't grab the attention on the gaming population
Hidden gem that we all missed
Gex: Enter the Gecko for the N64 is the prime example of how to NOT make a port. The game has such a terrible framerate that makes difficult to make jumps. Good thing that Gex 3 was a better port.
And I think Gex didn't appeared since gex 3 because there is no interest for it. Nowadays, Eidos (the owner of the franchise's mark) published a note that they will let people use Gex's trademark and will support the developers, if they send the project to Eidos and they accepted it. This has potential to be pretty good.
You say you can get it on PSN store? I thought all ps1 games had been pulled from the store!?
+Papa Ted Huh, no. What made you think that?
+Pimpalicious1987 I was on psn store the other day (UK) and ps1 and ps2 games weren't there?
I don't know for sure since I can't check easily(I'm in the US) but I haven't heard anything about all the classics being removed. I've only some here and there get removed due to rights like the R-Type games.
My cousin Anthony owns this game.
You forgot the titanic level exclusive on the N64...
ive never played a Gex game yet
Apparently he’s coming back to PS5
Be interesting to see what they do
I've never played it but it looks fun lol
you didnt mention cat fom red dwearf voiced the UK version
I remember this game for being completely panned by magazines. Gex was hardly memorable or iconic a game (maybe for the wrong reasons). It will stay consigned to videogame hell hopefully.
Stone cold Steve Austin, Does that make sense? Whatever I'm sticking to my guns on this one. So long stone cold Steve Austin!
Gex never seemed like a mascot to quality games. Granted, I have very little experience with him, but I've never heard anyone sing high praises of his adventures. Probably best to leave him in the past.
+NostalgicRoe
The first Gex is awesome. You should check it out.
+NostalgicRoe he's coming back in 16-17 after enix bought him
*****
actually there is
enix said either 16 or 17
*****
there making 1 but not for like 2 years
+Gassy Goddess that's good to hear. I wonder what consoles he'll appear on. Maybe the Wii U might get a chance at him.
Cool vid, thank you.
Thanks for watching !
Hell, I didn't even know there was an N64 Indiana Jones game until I saw your review!
was this as good as the ps1 version?
Like any n64 to ps1 comparison they each have their own merits but as a whole this versions probably better I feel
A fun game for a weekend afternoon in 1998.
I get the hint you didn't dig this cart so much
I would love to see Gex again. but it Did sadden me when I tried Gex 64 on my Everdrive. good thing ps1 emulation runs well on any pc.
I played this game 2 years ago on my n64. Its creative but it feels terrible. I really tried but its to unprecise and every jump is a guess.
***** not only, it controls really sloppy if i compare it to Mario 64
@6:23 In spite of the fogging, I still think the graphics are far superior than the Playstation version. Yes, the Playstation has sharper textures, but it isn't an issue because blurriness works better for cartooney style games like this and Mario 64. Sharp textures work better for gritty games like Quake and Duke Nukem. Plus the colours seem more vibrant in this version.
Yeah I think it comes down to the same trade offs that many N64 vs ps1 games had back in the day
