    When you said you were on a trip to Vic Falls I had no idea you were going to use that route. As soon as I noticed which route it was tears filled my eyes. No-one has ever shown this road on TH-cam. My dad had a plot right next to the Zambezi river in an area called Makwa. We would spend our weekends fishing there. I grew up in a suburb in Hwange and my dad would drive on that road every weekend to take us fishing.

    Thx for the ride. In Canada I often see a dichotomy between nature and needed industry.
    If you kook at pics of Banff Alberta and the oil sands Alberta it shows that very well.

    Hi Guys just came across your channel and really enjoy it. I'm also a Brit living in dodge city (joburg) SA and enjoy your views on Africa. I spent many years in the mining industry and disagree with what you say about the pollution in the rive at Wangie. That mine has the best quality coal in Southern Africa and could easily afford yo put in solutions to that problem. However as you say it is lack or political will that is stopping it. Zimbabwe could be the pearl of Africa for the tourist industry in Southern Africa if there was enough support for the government. Anyway keep up the good work. Mike Mooney

    • @cptkelly
      @cptkelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely agree. Mining can totally be done in a thoughtful and meaningful way - it simply isn't. The mine here is run by foreign nationals that ship out almost all the profit, leaving essentially the equivalent of a boom town. No mines and Hwange would lose its main source of income - but the folks there are not getting their fair share, nor is it being managed with the country's best interests.

    What would make the drive home from Vic Falls at night “Interesting”?

    • @cptkelly
      @cptkelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A couple of things. Firstly, drivers. At night, there are no lights at all along that route, with large trucks from Vic Falls to Hwange, then smaller cars from Hwange to Msuna. Driving that part can be treacherous. The last stretch along the dirt road is also an area with a lot of kudu, and they have an annoying propensity for jumping out in front of oncoming traffic.

    I see your wife is a white Zimbabwean. I didn't think there were any whites left in Zimbabwe. I was told by a Rhodie (as he liked to be called) all the whites emigrated to various parts (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, etc) between 1980 and 2000. With regards to your statement about the coal fields I would say the best solution is install hydroelectric dams on the remaining sights on the Zambezi river. There are three locations Batoka Gorge, Devil's Gorge and Mupata Gorge. Yes, Zimbabwe would loose white water rafting if Batoka Gorge were developed but the upside is you wouldn't import power and Zimbabwe's economy might actually grow for a change. Having large artificial lakes in a country and has a dry season isn't such a bad idea. I think Lake Kariba is an asset. I would be curious what your take on Botswana is. I was told it is a pretty well managed country compared to Zimbabwe.

    • @cptkelly
      @cptkelly  ปีที่แล้ว

      Botswana seems to be doing pretty well, for sure. Went across frequently when we lived in Vic Falls.
      I agree, hydroelectric is a great idea. Batoka Dam is supposed to also cause damage to Victoria Falls, so I'd personally avoid that one and aim for others.
      Otherwise, solar and wind both seem obvious options in Africa, alongside some long-term electrical storage (hydroelectric is good for this). The Tech is absolutely there now to go 100% renewable.

    The last time I drove on that road there was no mining around that area. Sad indeed because the community is not benefiting from the mining.

    • @cptkelly
      @cptkelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The folks who work in and for the mine are getting paid, and the extra business supports other businesses, so it does benefit the local community. The entirety of Hwange town is pretty much reliant on the coal mines at this point. It's just sad that:
      a) That comes at the cost of nature and beauty.
      b) The workers are paid X, the government ministers and Chinese owners are paid 100X.

    Atrocious camera work , too much detail in commentary ,negative energy and comparison to Europe... But overall good job

    • @cptkelly
      @cptkelly  ปีที่แล้ว

      This was filmed entirely on a cellphone, so sadly the camerawork isn't great - it was also just as I was starting out learning this stuff.
      Most things I discuss will be compared to Europe as it's where I'm from, and thus it's what I know by comparison. Comparisons aren't meant to be a "Europe is better", more pointing out the differences, and also talking about how I believe Zimbabwe could be better. I love it here, and I don't want it to be Europe but there are many things that could improve life here for Zimbabweans.

    I think you could do very well if you were to avoid being overly critical and appreciate a lot of other things that are happening on the ground that of positive, There is quite a lot of improvements on the ground even the road infrastructure in Zimbabwe is improving, Your blog comes across as typical Western vlogs that are very negative of everything African, in your previous video you made sweeping statements that everything works in the West ,However you well know that is not true, You could do very well to avoid the politics and getting mingled in the politics of Zimbabwe and commentary and showcase the Zimbabwe without sounding political and that would be great .

    • @cptkelly
      @cptkelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it's impossible to completely avoid politics. I love this country - I think it's fantastic the ways I'm seeing it grow and improve, but there is still much to be done and here in Bulawayo? Much is overlooked. Harare and Vic Falls are like their own worlds in Zimbabwe.
      I'm also well aware that not everything works in the West, I'm not aiming to cast any aspersions on Zimbabwe. I love this country, and I want to see it prosper. But we can only improve if we accept our issues. That's how we learn where to grow. Thank you for your comment, I meant no offence. ☺️

      That's great to hear and I see you have made Zimbabwe your home, the love you have for Zimbabwe shows and you are a going to be a great Zimbabwean I actually felt if you get yourself mingled in politics you alienate other people from the other political divide or neutrals like me and politics is kind of dirty hey and is ugly, However under the current administration people are free to communicate anything they want even to be very critical something I really like about ED tolerance before under Mugabe it was not as easy his administration would not have been so kind to you especially you being a Briton.
