    Nice visuals! However, there are crucial details missing from your description which had me very confused for a while.
    @2:47 When pushing the handle, the air in the first tube only compresses to a high enough pressure to open the third piston seal when the output pressure is very low, but the whole point of these pumps is that they can deliver a very high pressure. If output pressure is always low enough to allow the piston seal to open like that, then the entire pump may as well be a single stage.
    What's missing is that while you do address the first and third stages, you miss highlighting the second stage almost completely! When pulling on the handle, the first stage fills as you describe, and the third stage is filled with air from the second stage. However @1:29 no air from the first stage goes through the second stage into the third at this time. The second stage consists of the space between first and second tube, and between the third tube and piston rod. What you call the first stage piston is compressing second stage air into the third stage. What you call the second stage piston is holding that compressed air and preventing it from going back into the first stage while the first stage is filling.
    When pushing on the handle, the third stage air is delivered to the outlet as described. First stage air is compressed into the second stage, but as already mentioned, it doesn't go past that into the third stage except when the output pressure is low.
    So to summarize:
    First stage is the space inside the first tube, between the inlet (at the handle) and what you call the second piston
    Second stage is the space between first and second tube, contained by what you call the first piston, and the space between the third tube and piston, contained by the third piston seal. Air is admitted from the first stage via the second piston.
    Third stage is the space inside the third tube, between the third piston seal and the outlet high-pressure valve.
    On the pull stroke: outside air goes to the first stage, second stage air is compressed into the third stage
    On the push stroke: first stage air is compressed into the second stage, third stage air is compressed and pushed out of the pump
    additionally:
    On the pull stroke: second stage piston is closed. Third stage piston is open. High pressure valve is closed.
    On the push stroke: second stage piston is open, third stage piston is closed, high pressure valve opens.

      The third stage cylinder needs to be precharged, compressed before you push the piston down, to get high enough pressure

      Great comment. It's a big help in understanding how pcp hand pump works. But what about pcp pumps where 2nd stage is filled with liquid coolant? I guess liquid coolant serves to reduce volume of 2nd stage but liquid coolant should not completely fill second stage or the pump will not work.

      @@la2123 It's pretty important to understand how pcp hand pump works if you use pcp air gun and need to DIY repair and maintain the hand pump. Carrying around scuba tank or electric compressor is non starter in many cases.

      The third piston faces extremely high pressure and heat. The airgun's pump requires tuning after either 10 or 5 airgun refills, depending on the cylinder's capacity. If the quality of the seal material is poor, it tends to wear out quickly."

    So I got a handpump from amazon and I have a few questions:
    1.) The pump started having issues pulling up after a few hundred reps. It's like air isn't getting properly in and some air escapes out the top when I push it down.
    It still works, but I stopped using it because I don't want to break it.
    2.) What lubricant should I use? I tried Ballistol but it does seem to go go away/dry out after a few pumps.

    • @AirGunMech
      @AirGunMech  ปีที่แล้ว

      3 stage hand pump becomes hard when pressure increases more than 50-70 BAR.
      Yet it doesn't become harder as you mentioned. If you feel pump is harder while pulling it upward, the third piston is not working well. You have to check the air passage hole.

    • @AirGunMech
      @AirGunMech  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should use any good quality Silicone oil for lubrication

    • @NoNamer123456789
      @NoNamer123456789 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AirGunMech I've got some silicone oil from Ballistol, but that one's corrosive. Not sure why, but it makes (at least some) steel rust. Can you recommend one?
      I will have to take it apart then. Thanks for your reply.
      The funny thing is the gauge already had problems after one use. It traps some air even after bleeding, but also doesn't let all the air in, meaning I don't get the full pressure reading.
      It didn't even survive 300 bars on a 580cc tank before that happened btw.

    Air INLET is the Hole Beneath the Handlebars. If Dirt/Gunk gets in there, the Rubber Ball will not seal for the FIRST STAGE Compression. If the Ball swells (Usually due to Wrong Oil), then it stays Sealed, and Does Not Permit Inlet Air. I 3-D Printed a Plastic Piece that goes Between the Handlebars and the Cylinder. Provision for an Inlet Air Filter, to keep Gunk from Getting in. Makes MUCH LONGER service intervals for the Pump, and makes the Handlebar attach Much More securely.

      A normal pump can not make high pressure like 300 Bar pressure. Normal pump takes air when you pull the handle and when you push air just releases normally. In this way normal pump doesn't create pressure. But PCP pump when you pull or push both conditions creat pressure. 4 stage PCP pump is easier than 3 stage PCP pump.

    Thanks, more complicated than I first thought, explains why my Webley EZY 2 pump from 20 plus years ago was so expensive at the time.
    I still have the sales info stating it has an integral water trap, would anyone know how this is checked / cleaned.
    My old Webley FX2000 air rifle was resurrected a few months back, it was sat unused for many years, it leaked air from the filling port when I removed the pump probe after filling, I bought a seal kit for the rifle years ago, sorry I can't remember all the tech terminology, the small o ring that is part of the filling valve in the rifle was rock solid, changed this and the gun held pressure no problems, the other day I went to add some air after a shooting session and it started to leak again from the same place. Had a close look today and found some corrosion in the valve assembly where the o ring seals, fully cleaned it all and fitted a new o ring, all good but it got me thinking was my old pump the cause of the issue, so I tripped down all the connections and the hose, to find rust / corrosion at every joint, the pump did spend about 15 years in my loft at a previous house.
    I have fully cleaned all the visible corrosion, a quick look on fleabay shows a seal kit is available for my pump, it seems to work realy well, but it's the water trap I'm interested in if it needs to be cleaned etc.

    • @AirGunMech

      PCP pump are not good. Because if you fill your air tank upto 3000 Bar 2 times, the last stage piston needs to be tuned. Because this piston remains under very high pressure. Pump becomes harder and also back pressure problem occurs. Humidity in jungles is another problem for this type of pump. If you use your pump in a high humidity environment you will see the moisture coming out from the outlet filling prob

      Primero y principal, excelente animación, esto ayuda mucho a entender el funcionamiento de un inflador PCP.
      Este tipo de infladores trabaja en 4 ciclos de bombeo y es de 3 etapas de compresión.
      Lo que estaria faltando, es solo el ciclo medio de trabajo, cuando el aire acumulado en la etapa de aspiracion (al subir), pasa a la segunda etapa al bajar (espacio entre tubo externo y el mediano).
      Cuando volvemos a subir nuevamente, el aire entre esos tubos, pasa al caño chico donde se encuentra el pistón (por medio del cuerpo de transferencia) , y al mismo tiempo toma aire del ambiente.
      Finalmente baja y el aire acumulado en el tubo chico, pasa para la carga del rifle.
      Saludos y éxitos!!!

    "Liquid Cooling" is by means of Water in Middle Space(Better yet: Ethylene Glycol and Water, @ 50/50 ratio, and, even better, With a WETTING agent, found at Auto Performance Shops). Pump Slowly and Help keep Heat of Compression Low. O-Rings, Valve seals and Hose last Longer, makes for Less Service requirements.
