      @ArcherNewton  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your kind comment! Yes! That's great, questions definitely are important but you don't want to waste before using them at the right time - which is after you've learnt the techniques really well and now it's just about practice and learning about the little nuances of question types and familiarising yourself with similar QTs. This is the final stage once you've learnt everything well enough to then just focus on speed and exam-related issues like stress, keyboard shortcuts, using laminated paper etc. Hope this helps!

      @ArcherNewton  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, you should probably take a look at my video on how to get into med school. They don’t select people based on how much extracurriculars you did. There’s actually no point during the process where they ask this. It isn’t one of their selection criteria. Out of interest, where did you get the idea that extracurriculars are major contributors to medicine entry?

    Hi! How many hours of school study and UCAT study did you do per day (especially in the holidays before trials)? How many questions did you do in the UCAT? How do you "learn" the question types as you said? Did you do tutoring for ucat and interviews?

    • @ArcherNewton
      @ArcherNewton  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Nour! I had the philosophy that in my final year of high school, any time that I spent not socialising or doing something that I thought had an impact or important value in my life, I would be studying or sleeping, lol. That meant I got a study of done but also got everything else that I wanted done. This meant that my down time was socialising, and that was what worked for me. Whatever you do, you need downtime. This was my principle for school study, I did the UCAT for 30 minutes every day for around 6 months and that compounded to heaps of time obviously. In the holidays upcoming to my UCAT I focused pretty much solely on the UCAT and not my school trials because our trials were not graded; it was more important for me to score in the UCAT. I did thousands of questions for the UCAT, but the large majority of them were in the final month and a bit before the exam. This is when bulk numbers of questions become important, to find little nuance differences in question types and build familiarisation, BUT after learning it all correctly the first time. I learnt the UCAT with a very analytical approach of trying to understand why each technique was recommended and how it was supposed to help me. All the techniques I brought into the exam were from iCanMed since they had integrated everything I wanted/needed to know - they had rationale behind everything. I haven't really thought about ucat/interview training but I would recommend iCanMed since they are way way more qualified than just me who sat it once. They just answer questions 24/7 so it's the same thing really.
      Hope this helps!

    You seem a very intelligent, wise young lad. Enjoyed the video. Would you say it's imperative to invest in paid resources? Are the resources on the UCAT website enough to get a good grasp of strategies? I'm in my late 20s so i dont really have much room for error. Im planning on sitting the UCAT for the first time next year. Thanks again for the great advice/content to ponder

    • @ArcherNewton
      @ArcherNewton  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Vanessa, thank you for your kind comments! I wouldn't say it's absolutely necessary to invest in paid resources because I know some friends who did fine without them. However, it comes down to how much security you want in sitting the UCAT. Obviously, finding the right prep resources can remove all of the testing and trial and error to make sure that you've got the right techniques and strategies to get really good with the UCAT on your first try. That was my main reason for finding paid resources because they have experience with the UCAT while I would be trying it all out on my own and taking a bigger gamble.

      Hi Nelab, since it's pretty much crunch time for the UCAT now I think you still have enough time to make it through well - just that it's probably time to study in all the free time that you can. Yo man, I was in the same position as you last year with having done no revision with 3 weeks left. I suggest you try to structure ur UCAT study so that you are effective and u study with intent and trying to improve on certain areas. I also suggest you track your progress by recording your marks that ur getting if ur using medify (which I highly recommend). Just study hard and it is definitely possible for you to get a competitive score. I scored in the 98th percentile, which was higher than literally all my friends that had studied for months. I also thankfully made it into an australian medical school. I was doing ~6 hours a day towards the actual test though. Best of luck man.

      Hi Ellen! As a very very rough estimate, you should have at least 300 hours into the UCAT. I started early but only did 30 minutes every day so it easily added to over 300+ hours quite easily. It really depends for each person and how you're progressing through the content. Starting as soon as possible is always the best but a few months before is a good start.

      Hi there, I personally went with icanmed when considering the two. Looking for more questions is quite dangerous if you're considering to do thousands of questions to get better. As i mentioned in the video, doing thousands of questions will not help you master the UCAT like it might for a subject like biology or methods. The UCAT is skill based so it's quite different. If you want to look more into icanmed vs medentry, icanmed is doing free webinars at the moment so you can see what they have to offer, check out: www.icanmed.com.au/webinars/ and if you can't make it in person, just join another free online webinar.

    So you went over things not to do like churning questions, but like in a nutshell the thing we are meant to do is understand and learn the questions properly?

    • @ArcherNewton
      @ArcherNewton  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Lots of students don’t know how to ‘understand and learn’ the questions ‘properly’. They think it’ll be similar to school or that it’s as easy as reading the suggested answer to a question but it comes down to your process which can be used for all questions. This video may not help everyone and if you already know the importance of having a different and concrete approach then you are already going to be scoring higher than most. Like even scoring a 80 percentile means you have beat a whole load of people below 80 and those below that fall into traps like I mentioned in this video. My video coming out tonight will explain in more detail how we can go about building accuracy and speed in more detail. Let me know if u have any other questions! :)

    • @jamilahmz9949
      @jamilahmz9949 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Archer Newton yes! I have understood just doing tons of questions will barely do anything as the UCAT isn’t knowledge based as you said more “IQ” based if you can say. But what I don’t really know how to do is, understanding the concepts as not many people make videos on that. Because if you watch a generic UCAT video they’ll just tell you to practise, when in reality that won’t do much.

    • @ArcherNewton
      @ArcherNewton  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't say it's IQ based, because that's fixed whereas UCAT is something you can really study well for. Yeah I totally agree. It's really hard to explain how to 'understand' the concepts. Unfortunately, it's just something that really cannot fit into small, bite-sized youtube videos to be explicit enough. Like, videos out there that explain how to do VR questions (on average people's worst) just can't go into the required amount of detail to change someone's thinking process and mindset is something that rarely can happen in just a video. As I say in the video it's a 'learning process' and it's not quick and easy, otherwise everyone would be on 800+ haha. But I think, nonetheless, the free videos on iCanMed begin this process in enough detail. Their channel is here: th-cam.com/channels/sLu8q0P9Ih_gEEq4kQElRA.html
