    The square bodies were the last Chevy & GMC fullsize trucks to have carburetors & they were also the first to have fuel injection too. 1986 was the last year for carburetors & 1987 was the first year for fuel injection. 1988 was the first year for those OBSs.

      We can always learning something from Chris. Even though I am NOT a "car person" myself (that would be Steven, not me), I feel that I learn something every time I watch Mr. Chris. This thought just came to me -- this thought just came to me right now as I am writing: CHRIS WOULD MAKE AN EXCELLENT HIGH SCHOOL SHOP INSTRUCTOR! One of the things that impresses me is the way that he explains all of his work so clearly and plainly. He really has great narration skills --- and I am not just "blowing smoke" either. I try to watch many of the car channels that support us -- and Chris ranks at the top as far as his ability to put his work in "plain English" for those of us who are not "car people." In other words, he doesn't talk in coded language "chalk full" of the lexicon of the skilled automotive mechanics. Ruthie B. Howard 9/29/21

    I think the GM TBI units were 410 cfm and 460 cfm so it should have a good bit more high end power. Assault racing is headquartered about 40 miles north of me, they got a great holly blue knock off pump if you ever need one. We are gonna try their electric water pump on the 460

  • @thewoodsman5261
    @thewoodsman5261 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sweet video brother, the info will come in handy down the road.
    Got a question for you or anyone who reads this.
    This is the situation I'm in. I recently bought a 77 Sierra Classic K15 for a project truck it's 98% complete. It's not running.
    The original 400 sbc engine, turbo400 transmission and transfer case were removed and replaced with a 5.7 tbi smallblock and 700r4 tranny out of a 87 suburban. The setup was only dropped in and nothing hooked up, it's all just sitting in there
    I'm not great with with computers and not a fan of fuel injection and want to put this old girl back to a carburetor the way she came from the factory.
    I'm going the way of a mechanical fuel pump, so other than that I need the intake for vortec heads, a carburetor and hei distributor.
    How difficult to get that 709r4 tranny working, it's not electronically controlled? I would be setting it up like a TH350 or TH400 correct?

    • @CCAutoWorks
      @CCAutoWorks  ปีที่แล้ว

      One an 87 suburban isn't a vortec so no need for a vortec intake manifold 87 is tbi and the tbi heads use the regular sbc intake you just have to drill the bolt holes a tad bigger sometimes and for the 700r4 you just need a throttle bracket for the detent kickdown cable for the 700r4 and you need a vacuum switch for the converter lockup once it's in overdrive or I've seen some people just use a taggle switch but I like the vacuum switch so it does it on its own no worries

  • @TOMVUTHEPIMP
    @TOMVUTHEPIMP 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What intake manifold did you use? I just watched another video and they had an issue with the aftermarket intake being too big and hitting the stock heads.

    • @CCAutoWorks

  • @jeffbraden78

    What size carb are you using? Are you running it straight out of the box? What year is your truck? My 91 doesn't have tach. I'm either gonna do a complete custom gauge set up or it would be nice if I could find one like yours at a pull a part

    • @CCAutoWorks
      @CCAutoWorks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mine has a tach because it's manual transmission it's a 92 and it's a summit racing max performance 650cfm that I've tuned a little bit but it still ran right out of the box

    got question for you ....i just rebuild my chevy 350 1990 k5 blazer i converted it over from tbi to carb ..i did a few up grade on the engine high performance intake headers 3' pipes all way back up graded the cam to a howard rattler cam 525 intake lift 535 exhaust duration 227/235 lobe separation 109 center line 103 i still the same factory heads on there i believe they the swirl port heads ..i no i should have went with some better heads but the engine was already done. i put a brand new 1406 edelbrock car on it right out the box every sence i put that carb on there i been using alot of fuel i set the carb best as posible ..im using a awful lot of fuel just with it iding..i have my pressure regulator set at 5psi..dont no why im losing so mush fuel

    • @CCAutoWorks
      @CCAutoWorks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's all to do with the cam size and the lsa and the vacuum the cam makes we have other videos where we deal with this problem running a rattler cam on my little brothers mustang you need to buy stepup springs for the carb and possibly drill tiny holes in the throttle blades as a old school trick to lean it out

    Just starting tearing down the top end of my 350. Has tick in the top end before I parked it for the winter went to go start it up to diagnose and I had no spark or fuel. So now I’m planning on going to carb and I’ve got a fuel regulator, 2101 edelbrock performer intake, hei distributor and a 650 quadrajet ready to go when I figure out what the tick is.
    Any advice?

    • @CCAutoWorks
      @CCAutoWorks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably a lifter tick I'd try adjusting the rockers it might have pulled a rocker stud a tad bit or a lifter collapsed but adjusting the rockers should get rid of tik if not it might be deeper like a spun rod bearing

  • @214deleon4
    @214deleon4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man, did you have any issues with swapping to vortec heads? Im currently in the process but dont know if i should port the tbi heads or go the extra foot and get vortec heads and port those? My main concern is the fitting from the alternator brackets etc but mines looks just like yours so im not too concerned just dont know how to run the heater hose and etc..

    • @CCAutoWorks
      @CCAutoWorks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They bolt right up no problem all the tbi brackets bolt right up you will just need a intake for vortecs and the heater hoses are no big deal there very simple to figure out

    • @CCAutoWorks
      @CCAutoWorks  ปีที่แล้ว

      You might need the tps so it will run the transmission kickdown and on the fuel you might have to wire the fuel pump relay direct

  • @rickysanders1695
    @rickysanders1695 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok so which Holley regulator would I need to make this work with running the stock fuel pump? Would I need to go with the one rated for higher psi ( 50-60) or would I got with the lower one ( 4-9 ) ?? I’m just confused on which I would need. I bypassed my stock pump and used a Edelbrock micro pump but I’m having issues now. When using the stock pump it just shoots fuel out of my carb. I don’t know if it is because of the regulator I got from autozone is too weak or what….any advice?

    • @CCAutoWorks
      @CCAutoWorks  ปีที่แล้ว

I have a 88 GMC Sierra SLE K1500 with 5.7L, and 700R4 trans that I'm completely converting over with a rebuilt 350 engine with stock flat top pistons, a set of 350 non-swirlport L98 cast iron heads with casting #14100183, Speed master dual plane intake, Lunati Street Master cam #301A6, 750 CFM Quadrajet carb, may change to over to a Holley 650 CFM Brawler carb later, HEI distributor w/vacuum advance, Hedman long tube headers, 2-1/2 in dual exhaust, 3.73 rear gears, may go with electric water pump later, and I'm definitely using a dual radiator electric cooling fan assembly if I can find one that'll work in my truck that looks like factory if possible. Ive got a 3500 Express with a L31 Vortec 350, and the TBI is starting to give me shit. Considering upgrading the fuel delivery, but that trans module is a huge cost compared to going to a big block TBI on an otherwise stock work van. It usually runs fine snd drives fine, tows with no issues, but when its got problems it just dies and takes a while to get cleared up to run again. Might need the fuel lines replaced too, but that spider under the intake is just a bad design. Its less of a problem on the TBI built for the 454, but still a TBI.
    What was the total cost to go to virtec heads and run a carb with regulator? I'm definitely not resolved to using a TBI, might go to a 750 cfm carb on a dual plane intake.
    If i have to pull the engine its getting a lot more work than just that TBI upgrade. Might get a 6.0 4l80E drivetrain at that point.

    • @CCAutoWorks
      @CCAutoWorks  ปีที่แล้ว

      6.0 4l80 sounds good but back when I done this I pulled the heads from a junk yard for $40 the vortec summit air gap intake was $200 carb was $320 regulator was $55 air cleaner $25 and hei distributor $60 custom ground roller cam was $200 lifters $80
