Pilita Corrales is. Filipina who hails from Cebu, Philippines. She was one of the very first Filipinas who broke into the international scene, by winning the Asian Song Festival which garnered her the title Asia’s Queen of Song, that led her other international performances, especially in the US performing with big names like Sammy Davis Jr. Pilita is still very active in show business as an actress and still performs in concerts. She speaks Spanish quite well, as she comes from Spanish descendants as well, as a lot of Filipinos are. Who are products of intermarriages. I hope this helps. By the way she is already 81 years old and still is in good shape for a woman her age, still very vital and active and can still sing and carry a performance quite well! A truly seasoned singer and performer she is!

There was no other Filipina, then and now, who made it big outside the Philippines, as a recording star. So it's wrong to say 'she's one of the very first Filipinas...'. Pilita became a hugely popular singer/performer in Australia for 4 years between 1959-1963, so popular that a street in Melbourne, Australia was named Pilita St. in her honor. Her mother language is Cebuano/Bisaya but she's fluent in both English and Spanish due to her Spanish ancestry. She's not fluent in Tagalog just like most other true-blue Cebuano celebrities. Pilita made history in Australia for being the first woman, Aussie or foreigner, to chart a song with her largely English repertoire in Australian pop charts.
Though, another Cebuana singer/performer, Amapola Cabase, became popular outside the Philippines with her own US television magazine show between late 1970s well to the 80s. Leah Salonga was globally popular outside the Philippines but as a theater actress.

back until the mid 80s Spanish was still taught as an elective in selected private high school, so the few remaining meztizo families with strong roots still with Spain were still able to converse with their children in Spanish at home. Pilita belongs to one of those families who usually lived outside Manila in the provincial cities like Cebu and Bacolod.
and BTW. Spanish still considered an official language here until 1987. Spanish was spoken predominantly (so once upon a time we WERE Latinos) deep into American colonization until the 40s when school instruction began to be taught in English and Spanish speaking numbers declined. When independence was granted, English was already the language of business and government and education.
Filipino novelty songs back in the day were usually to the melody that has Latin flavor in it, and old "country" or provincial music had Hispanic flavor mixed in it.
We're your long lost cousins. 😁

But just like Spanish Saharans and Equatoguineans we are NOT Latinos and you will understand that when you look into the definition and origin of the word Latino itself. We do sometimes get confused of the terms Hispanic and Latino so please do look it up! ^^

    Pilita Street
    Where: Victoria, Australia.
    Named after: Pilita Corrales, singer.
It was in Australia that Pilita Corrales began her singing career. In 1959, she set sail for Australia with actor-magician John Calvert for some engagements. En route, they were shipwrecked off Australia’s northern coast and rescued by the Navy. The duo went on to perform in Sydney, Darwin, and Melbourne.
Pilita was an instant hit and was featured on popular TV shows, thrilling audiences with her English, Spanish, and Filipino songs. She was signed up by Astor Records and became the first female recording star in Australia to score a hit on the pop charts with the song ‘Come Closer To Me’-long before Olivia Newton-John and Kylie Minogue.
Considered as one of the ‘Great Dames of Victorian Radio and Television,’ Pilita was honored by having a street named after her in the ’70s in the Forest Hill district of Victoria.
In 1963, she returned to the Philippines to establish her career in her own country. Pilita continues to perform regularly in Australia today, most recently in 2015, where Australians still recognize her as the star of their generation.

"Historia de un Amor" is a famous and well-loved song in the Philippines. I think it was used as an OST in a Mexican movie in the 50's or 60's. But even 'til the 90s, the song was still being played in some local radio stations and was still being sung and perfomed by rondalla bands in restaurants in Manila.

Given the history of the Philippines, Filipinos have mixes as well Filipino-Chinese, Filipino-Hispanic, Filipino-American, etc. And each cultural mix is very much alive and continue to thrive in all aspects.
If you truly wish to delve into it, Pilita was among the very first true Divas. Look at the history of our beauty queens through the years, many are from long standing “old families”. For some, Spanish is their first language followed by their dialect then Tagalog and finally English. The same goes for those with Chinese roots….

So Spanish/Mexican music comes out naturally of her plus she has that caucasian look that makes her popular in the Philippines. She is Asia's Queen of Songs. The Corrales who lives in Cebu, Philippines still speak Spanish in their household to preserve the language. We're neighbors with her brother's family. The Philippines wash colonized for 300 years and Spanish was the spoken language aside from Tagalog and English. In the 1950s-1970s, Spanish language was a major college subject. Our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal (a multi-linqual) wrote "Noli Me Tangere" and " El Filibusterismo" in Spanish and widely studied and taken as our regular subject in Philippine History course. Her first husband was Spanish which produced a daughter (also an actress in the Philippines), she bore a son (also an actor) from a Filipino-Spanish actor, and her second husband is a Paraguayan-Spanish.
