Somethings to consider if your coming from being a IR thermometer user. The camera will likely be noticeably slower for both bootup and the time it takes for the reading to update as well as finding your target initially. Bootup can approach a half minute, reading will take several seconds and finding your target through the display could be a challenge. An IR thermometer will typically bootup well within 5 seconds, display update 0.25 seconds and finding the target as fast as a weapon with a laser. The battery of the IR thermometer is typically the common off the shelf 9.V. Today there are hybrids that are thermal cameras with a laser. The camera will likely be a power hog having a non common off the shelf rechargeable battery and may not be user replaceable.
finally somebody that explains all the details of both lower end infrared cameras. Really top. I wish that somebody do a proper detailed review of the FLIR TG165X (The new upgraded version).
Nice video. I just bought the Fluke VT104A and 5 years on I cannot recommend it at all, especially as temperatures read lower than they are. I have a Flir full Thermal Imaging Camera that is awesome even though very expensive, but in comparison a cheap cellphone Flir camera will easily outperform the Fluke in virtually all situations.
Thanks for your detailed review, was trying to decide between these 2 for my sailboat work. Will come in handy for checking my solar and windmill regulators, inverter and refrigeration . I went with the Flir even though Im sold on Fluke instruments.
For thirty years I have been an avid fan of all fluke kit, except the IR stuff. They still have a long way to go to catch Flir who have had this market for a very long time.
Martin, in 2021 is the Flir TG165 a good price at £300, it will we used form general temp testing at home and in the car engine bay? Kindest regards. Joe.
One thing I did see on another FLIR TG165 review, it was near impossible to replace the battery. Could you check with the Fluke if it has a similar problem. Thanks for a very informative review.
very nice video but just a quick question your in the same room and targeting the the same wall how come fluke registering 78.x - 79.x f while Flir is registering 73.x f
Which one would you buy? Is the blending better in the Fluke if you were using it to report to customer problems? Flir rep said they don't use blending because their resolution is better? Is that your opinion? I am an airconditioning contractor and plan to use it to check equipment. Would like to show client problems with the picture thanks
How great a temperature difference is needed to show differences in colour/tone in the display (FLIR TG165)? I ask because I am considering getting one to find variations in temperature in a bee incubator apparatus and relevant differences may be only 2 deg C from one part to another. I understand the centre point gives an actual read out but I can do that already with a non-imaging IR laser-aimed thermometer.
Looks like quite a difference in temperature readings with the Fluke measuring higher, probably less accurate unless it was really that warm in a basement in September...
What happened to all the stuff Barry from tester sent? I'm still waiting for a review of the Uni-T LCR meter and Barry's still waiting for me to buy it.
FuzzyTronics Did you see the overview of the Uni-T in T4D #70? You are correct, I have...and always will have a backlog of equipment to review. I fit it in where I can or when an appropriate topic pops up.
Martin, have you seen the Seek Thermal? It's a thermal imaging camera that plugs into the smart phones micro USB port, they offer one for the iPhone AND one for Android phones, both are $199.00 USD at their store, their website is Thermal.com. It would be nice to see a comparison review between the two when you review the FLIR One thermal imager for iPhone 5/5s. Thanks for an interesting video.
William Lee Hi William, yes, I've seen the Seek Thermal and mention it in the next T4D. I'll be interviewing Erik Beall who designed the Hema Imager (similar to the Seek) and we'll chat about both. I do plan to have a Seek, Hema and FLIR One in my hands to test at some point in time.
You can feel the heat better with your hand. Won't detect hot water line in drywall. Moisture meter is better than this. I have one and its worthless in my trade.
Pretty sad that 7 years later Fluke is still selling the same exact model (at this form factor) while FLIR is now light years ahead of them. Sure, Fluke has moved along with their $30,000 units. Eye roll! I find myself moving more and more away from Fluke with every purchase.
This is one of the best technical/ informative videos I have ever seen. Keep the good work

The battery is not made to be replaced. It's an internal rechargeable battery. If something goes wrong, you can send it in to FLIR to have it fixed.
Excellent review of both devices comparing the features and benefits. Thanks for putting this together.

Which of the two temperatures is the right one? Fluke always shows a higher temperature than flir.

Hi Martin, nice video. May you tell me what's the difference between FLIR TG165 and FLIR E4 ?
How great a temperature difference is needed to show differences in colour/tone in the display (FLIR TG165)? I ask because I am considering getting one to find variations in temperature in a bee incubator apparatus and relevant differences may be only 2 deg C from one part to another. I am a tradesman and not a tech pro, please could you advise which Fluke/Flir is the equivalent of the Dewalt thermal imager please?
Which is suitable for water leaking identification on wall or concrete roof slab?
Can you set the FLIR to Centigrade mode? In the video it is set to Fahrenheit.
Excellent Sir! Thank you for taking time to make this great comparison!
This was a great video......I am leaning twards the flir for fast troubleshooting.........
hello good afternoon, what would you recommend to use in the automotive industry, which is the best?
This is a great video... I plan on purchasing a tg165 next month..... thank you for you time and detail. !!!
Hello Jorge, do you need a new infrared camera? our company specialize in design and produce IR Camera and DMM etc.
Hello, the Fluke vt04 camera sensor 31x31?
Good job Martin. I am planning to buy one of this to check my house and this test heko me. So I think Flir is better, mainly for resolution.
Nice review; down to the point and very objective. Well done.
can you please compare TG165 and fluke VTO4 on a PCB to detect any hot IC, how good is the resolution?
Thanks Mate.
I would like to see if the Flir can outline studs in a plaster and drywall wall.
did you notice when powered up the temperature showed a difference in the cameras by 5' F !
Good Info. I would like to ask you in your experience, if I want to use it for academic purposes, which thermometer would you recommend me?

***** I'm going to follow-up with a video that specifically tests the accuracy across all these devices soon to answer that question.
What would be better the flir tg165 or the flir one pro
