- Here's Herb Alpert's version of "A Taste of Honey" arranged by me for Brass Quintet.
The song was originally written by Bobby Scott and Ric Marlow for a Broadway production (and later, a film). It's been covered by an impressive list of artists including Lenny Welch (1961), The Beatles (1962), Peggy Lee (1963), Paul Desmond (1965), and of course Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass (1965). I considered doing a smartypants arrangement with lots of musical quotes from the various versions. But in the end, I just love the Herb Alpert sound, and I think that's what audiences will want to hear from a brass group playing this song. Have fun with this one (particularly the trumpets!)

Thanks Maeve. Enjoyed waking up with my morning cup of coffee listening to music I grew up with!
That got the toes tapping and the memories going. I may have to look up some more Herb Albert on Spotify. Of course, I first heard it on Mom and Dad's stereo on vinyl. 😊
More Marvelous Maeve Music!! Magnificent!! This one took me back to when I used to play trumpet and Herb was my hero!! I knew Honey by heart! As always, thanks for sharing ... great way to start the weekend! [Greetings from Tucson where we got to see Herb and Lani Hall in concert last year ... good as ever!]
Excellent arranging, playing, videography, and production Maeve. You have captured the energy and vibe of Herb Alpert. Outstanding work!
I’ve always loved this song. You nailed it, as always! ❤
This gal: "not to toot my own horn, but..."
Superb and so enjoyable version and fantastic performance as always,Maeve!
Love this version Maeve. Do you also do trombone quartets vs quintets?
Thanks! Nice arrangement! 1965 all over again! Liked the Trumpet 2 improv at the end and the drums. Did you play your drum set on this?
Thanks! No, I was planning to record drums but the Musescore export actually sounded pretty good so I left it in. 😊
This was a fun arrangement. Every time I hear this song, I always think of listening to Allan Sherman's parody "A Waste of Money", so I couldn't help but sing along (please remember the time this was written) :
I wanted to get
Some new girlfriends,
So I went and bought
A Mercedes Benz.
A waste of money!
Eight thousand bucks down the drain.
I thought the girl
Would get wild and reckless,
So I bought cultured pearls
And a diamond necklace.
A waste of money!
That cost me four thousand more.
They were returned,
I got no girls.
They repossessed
Both the car and pearls.
I styled my hair
Just like Cary Grants.
Bought a pair
Of those tight new pants.
A waste of money!
Household Finance took my pants.
The female gender,
I just don't get it.
Just when I'm out
Of both cash and credit
I found a honey!
And this is what's funny,
She don't need my money,
She works for Household Finance.
