ABSTRACT:
What is the matrix SVD? How did Spock use the SVD to save the Universe in the first Star Trek movie?How can you use the SVD to study the human gait, to find a date, to win elections, and to face Covid-19?
SPEAKER:
Cleve Moler is a mathematician and computer programmer specializing in numerical analysis. He was one of the authors of LINPACK and EISPACK, Fortran libraries for numerical computing. He is well known for being the inventor of MATLAB and a cofounder of MathWorks. He worked as a professor of mathematics and computer science for almost 20 years at University of Michigan, Stanford University, and the University of New Mexico. In the years 2007-2008 he presided the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and he continues to support SIAM, among others by being a SIAM visiting lecturer.
