Whoa! I'm American, but in my state at least, transit agencies receive a share of the fine revenue. What's the point of fining offenders if it doesn't help recover lost revenue for the transit agency.

Some people are pure faire evaders, others can make a first time mistake when in hurry, forgeting cash or wallet at home.Yes people shouldn't do that, on the other side TTC is the most expensive transport system on earth, in the entire world. With the rudest service in Canada, you don't always find patient bus driver.

Expensive transport system on earth? You're a bit over exaggerating there... Look at GO transit, it charges per distance. Even I don't think that GO is "the most expensive transport system on earth"...

That broadcast was made July 30th on Global TV and focused on the yonge eglinton entrance.
On the new cars, if you don't have a presto card, at rush hour we are forced to get on where we can due to crowding so if you get shuffled to any door but the front, you can't pay the fare if you tried.
You know that if you don't have a presto card you queue up in the area that would line you up with the front door. Early arrival assures you a spot near the front door opening. Plan ahead. You may have to wait for a second train. Prepurchasing your farecard prevents a lot of headaches.
Not our job to have a headache about paying, if the TTC truly cares then they should design it where you can't fare evade.
i was once in a financially bad spot and i really didn't have 3.25 for bus fare. I had to jump over the presto gates if i had the money i wouldve paid for sure

With that attitude we'd be justified in stealing anything if we just didn't have the money. If you have to go somewhere you can't just show up and say, oh, I don't have fare, i'll just jump the gate or jump out of the car from an uber driver.
Wait, why is ttc paying for fare inspectors? Shouldn't that be the province considering the fines paid are going there.
TTC has commissioned peace officers that work in a police capacity for TTC. They are like municipal police or park rangers but for the TTC.
Why isnt Presto paying for inspectors?? Better yet: why is Presto even involved in our ttc????
Thats ridiculous. Its almost sometimes impossible to pay on the spadina streetcar because of how packed it is and lack of access to those remote paying stations. Poor design and poor everything by ttc.
Last year I was going home from a date and completely forgot to pay! Sorry, had a few drinks but I swear I tapped my Presto on my way out lol
The TTC needs to bring back debit/credit methods of payment at their streetcar stops and in the cars themselves. Why would they get rid of them? I got the $235 ticket because I forgot my presto and counted on paying at the station (it was late and cold and you know the wait times for streetcars), I don't evade fares and labelling everyone who gets nailed by the ttc's narrow rules a offender is not in the public's interest. The inspector did not provide a warning for my first offence.
You should have reported him or her.
The issue here, is that fare evaders do not have to provide their ID to these Inspectors. They are not under arrest and are free to walk away. That needs changing

The problem is the street cars are design in a way that people would automatically believe they can get away with not paying, I was inspected only about 3 or 4 times in the past 5 years (I never cheated), so imagine how easy you can get away with not paying
2% Fare Evaders. The TTC is screwing over it's riders, not those 2%.This is another pathetic attempt by the TTC, despite recently getting over $3 Billion.

The TTC 2019 Fare Evasion Study says they lost 60.7 million to fare evasion. In 2019 they also had a budget of $2.1 billion. Under 3% hit and people gain access to the city. low it
$3.25 seems a bit steep, in the UK trams mostly charge about £2
At this moment, $3.25 Canadian is £1.92
@@CanadianTimeLord oh ok. So around about right then. In the UK, let’s use London Trams as an example... the fare is £1.50 for either a single journey or multiple journeys within 1 hour but the fine is £80, which is reduced to £40 if you pay within 7 days (I believe).

1:00 - I wouldn't. If you don't pay your fare, you are a thief. It is no different from sneaking into a movie theater or leaving without paying your bill at a restaurant.
It's all a scare tactic. They are made to look intimidating but just imagine them on wheelchair asking for your proof of fare. They CANNOT chase after you even if they wanted to.
TTC has to employ the inspectors but the fine revenue goes to the city council? There is a bad culture going on in Toronto.
It would be more incentive to catch out more fare evading bludgers if the TTC kept the profits.

If you want to see a reduction in fares we need less employees and that’s where automation is coming into play. Most drivers look so bored yet could be replaced. You cod have the driver do fare inspection and drive if the computer breaks.
I would install turnstiles in every bus and streetcar stop possible. The current fare inspectors would get their jobs changed to something else in the TTC

TTC fare inspectors are wannabe cops on a power trip. Any idiot can go up and down a streetcar to check for correct fares. But have them at that Spadina Streetcar Bay and dealing with irate commuters who actually feel like they didn't do anything wrong, suddenly they become frazzled and devoid of any social or customer service skills.

Those fare evaders are the reason for the hike. TTC shouldn’t be free. Drivers are not free. Pay your fare. I made a mistake for not paying attention and got on the bus that didn’t have a presto tap and got slapped with a fine. Thankfully, I paid the fine.

Bogus , Fare Inspectors , just another high paying position , that we have to pay for .The TTC Special Constables should be doing this job , I have a friend that is a TTC Special Constable , they do not do anything and are so lazy , he even brags about it . He claims it is beneath them to check fares .
easest job has to be those who just sit in the booth by the subway to make sure you pay your fare. some times they don't even say anything when you evade it as well
I work for the ttc and feel sorry for the honest people who pay the right far, because almost 70% in not paying their full fare, using expire transfer, paying student or senior fare or now with under 12 years free ride we see people up to 18 years old abusing the system , and ttc is not serious about collecting the fare, and we the operator not allowed to enforce the fare, when ttc need money they raise the far or the city increase property or gas tax

The new TTC streetcar has a design flaw, before the driver monitors who is paying and who is not, now you can enter the vehicle from all doors, it’s fully depending on people’s moral to pay or not to pay, you can never depend of people’s morals. Hiring these fare inspectors uses our tax money. TTC loses money because of these fare invaders, so they will keep rising the price of the fare every year. It is a vicious cycle.
Okay, I have a question. Does the TTC inspector has the same authority as police does? How much can they do? If someone busts me for not paying, I'm NOT giving out my data. I'm not handing them my Presto card either. Do they have the authority to take me to the police station and force me to give out my information? What can they do and how far does their authority stretch? Also, if someone made no attempt to pay the fair, HOW can they prove he wasn't searching for his valet the entire time, or that he was planning to pay for the ride as he was still on the streetcar?
I feel like it's not that difficult to dispute the fine in a lot of cases. Just for the record: I always pay for the fare.

That is not entirely true. I have seen many people with business suit evade paying.
Not really. Get on the Spadina streetcar and wait in the train for everyone to get off. If there are inspectors at the station, you'll usually see a bunch of people stay back and make a beeline to the ticket machine. They're all sorts of people, including people who look well off. Rip off artists isn't something limited by social class.
Increasing fines will definitely put a curb to fare evasion. If you had to pay a $1000 fine every time you were caught fare evading, do you really think you'd take the chance? What about if it was $10,000?

Now if only that same provincial fine of $260 could be issued by cops to menacing cyclists riding without helmets on roads and bike lanes. They create more trouble than fare evaders who unethically but safely ride public transit.
No it gives unwarranted stress to drivers because we could accidentally brush them when driving or changing lanes. Door them when we park and they hit the pavement and get severely injured or die we see our insurance spike or worse get our names broadcast on the news like we committed manslaughter before our trial. Consider the Michael Bryant case.
