Hey, I want you to know that you're not alone in feeling lonely. I've been struggling with that a lot as a sixth year student at a four year university. I don't really have many friends left here, so loneliness is a huge issue, but what helps me is knowing that there are others who understand loneliness and feel as lonely and isolated as I do. It reminds me that I'm not alone in being alone. If you need anyone to talk to to help you feel less lonely, let me know.
Hey I agree with the other commenters, I’ve been pretty lonely lately as well. Feel free to reach out to talk about vlogbrothers slash life if you want to.
I asked this question on one of your last Hankschannel videos, this is really helpful to hear. Thank You for devoting an entire video to this, it reassures me and a lot of people like me who can have trouble being hopeful.
The title of this video really resonated with me. I teach, and sometimes I feel like I just can't be good at teaching my students. There isn't a binary of fixed and broken for middle schoolers who have been through trauma. But we're not looking towards a fixed state. We're looking to heal a little trauma a little at a time because I have hope and I care about every one of my students so deeply. Thanks for this video.
thank you for your work. a teacher like you would've meant the world to me when i was in middle school, and, at least in my experience, just hoping and caring about your students so much makes you more than good enough. happy holidays!
I work as a climate change educator so I spend a lot of time thinking about climate change. When people hear that they usually say something along the lines of 'That's great, we need someone working on it'- which indicates to be two things: people understand this is a bad thing and people feel totally dis empowered to address it themselves (which is something I also often feel despite my degree and job). But I think there is so much hope. For example, globally if we reduce our animal agriculture reliance we will be able to hit many of these targets easily. And that, I think, is really empowering. That just through changing our diets, we can take care of not only ourselves, but each other.
If lab-grown meat is greener than ranching, and can be successfully marketed, and works out to be indistinguishable from animal meat, then that would probably be a turning point.
this was exactly the video i needed this week! it’s nice to remember that bad is a spectrum & that humanity has survived lots and lots thus far... we can do it!!! thx green brothers for keeping up the hope.
"We are not working toward a fixed state, we are working toward a better place on the spectrum of bad." I think I really needed to hear this today, thank you so much.
"Even the tiniest fraction is infinitely greater than zero." Thank you Hank-- everyone I know in my social work program needed that, and I was at the top of that list of needing.
Hope is really the least selfish action you can take. It’s easy to despair, and it’s really about you. It’s hard to hope, and it’s what you do for others. Keep hoping :-)
Not only did I need this, but I also have a lot of love for you and John reaching out to kids and young adults who are in their vulnerable years and need to feel understood. Parents can’t always do this, sometimes you need someone else. Thanks for being someone else.
I stopped watching John play grand theft auto to watch this (I'm sick in bed so I've been watching the entire series today. I'm on the second-to-last episode) Edit: I am glad I did this. As a person finishing up a semester-long class on global warming and climate change, I am feeling more worried than ever about it. Thanks for talking about it so much and giving me a little hope.
Thank you...I've been working, applying to college, rehearsing for concerts, obsessively checking the news, and trying to get good grades, and it's really overwhelming. But when I come here, I find a little bit of sanity. I'm glad we're all here.
Thanks, Hank. What you said about not fighting for a "'fixed' state," but rather, a better place on the spectrum of bad is (perhaps counter-intuitively) hopeful and positive. All the bits of good DO add up to better than it would have been without those drops in the bucket. I like that.
lately I’ve been feeling like I’m drowning, and just the other day I couldn’t stop thinking to myself ‘it’s all too much, it’s too much to handle’ (it, in my situation, being life). seeing the title I immediately clicked. and while the actual topic of the video wasn’t relevant to my personal problems I’m battling, it took my mind off of them for a joyous four minutes, and it really helped me regain some of my optimism. thank you.
Absolutely agree with this, when something bad happens you have to ask "how can I use this to improve myself or make things better for others?" Every crisis is an opportunity, you just need to get creative.
On a highly unrelated note, the day we were learning Chicago style citing (this was quite a while ago during History), the teacher asked to see if anyone knew how to properly cite sources in the manner you would for a paper. One kid raised his hand and said (this is an exact quote), "parenthetical citation, because footnotes are dumb." My History teacher responded with a polite "pardon?" Then this time the sane guy repeated his opinion about footnotes in an extremely bold and confident manner. Everyone in the class could barley keep a straight face during the rest of the short lesson on Chicago style citing because the teacher proceeded to teach the class how to properly use footnotes in a paper for a solid 5 minutes.
I actually have very high confidence in both the conversion of the car market to electric, both new cars and also people buying used electric cars. As well as things like the impossible Burger toppling the beef industry and saving a whole lot of carbon that way. not to mention the energy sector converting to solar as it gets cheaper and cheaper. There's a lot to be hopeful for, but not a lot of recent big wins to point at

I have a question: Hank, I’m going to podcon 2019 in January. My mother has been watching your videos for a long time, she identifies with you because she also has crohn’s. She really loves all the science videos, podcasts, basically everything you guys do! But sadly she’s too modest to attend podcon. I think she feels like it’s enough just tuning in after the fact. My plan is to hopefully get you two on a live phone call, my mom could talk to this person she’s admired/identified with/kept up with since forever! Even if it’s just a short “hello!”, I think that’d make her really happy.

I can't tell you how much I needed this video. I've been desparing at the possible effects of climate change for a few years now, to the point where I've been avoiding thinking about it in the same way as death. I just kind of accepted that the planet was screwed to the point where I would get the dubious privlege of seeing it come to an end. I am a history and politics student, I'm keen on science but only in the sense that I'll watch the odd sci show video or another one of its ilk, I just don't have a thorough understanding of all this like I do history. This video, from you a content creator I've followed for a good few years now that I know understands the situation to such a far greater degree than I likely ever will, that says "hey, the world may not end in your lifetime" is such a weight off my shoulders. Despite the fact you may not see this, I can't thank you enough for this. I've been carrying that weight for too long. Thinking that I should work on pushing other endevors like LGBT rights and the like, since climate change is a lost cause, you have given me the hope to work, to act. I won't stop pushing the former, couldn't ever do that, but this video gives me the hope to act, and took away that looming despair. I'm sorry for the lengthy comment, I just... Thank you.
I was just wondering what happened to John's Tuesday video because I always see that first thing Tuesday to start my day....glad to see John is in fact ok and there is a reason for the change.
This channel is always a beautiful axis of order, hope, introspection. It's nice to explicitly hear, midst doom and gloom--demagoguery and desolation, that things, as bad as they get, are never as bad as they feel and are redeemable. Thank you! (Reader, I do hope you're loving yourself and this world today.)
I clicked on this video and then I immediately remembered that p4a starts soon and I decided to check to see if the fundraising had started... I have to admit that I didn't hear a word Hank said because I got so excited when I saw the plushie version of our One True King, Glennnn was available as a perk. I shall have to watch this video again once my excitement calms down.
Slightly off topic but still important: as a huge proponent of the green new deal and a fan of this planet, the only thing I could do during this video was replace “climate change” with “mental health.” I’ve been swinging between utopia and apocalypse for the better part of a decade with my moods. Lately it’s been rapidly flying toward apocalypse and I lost my grip on hope big time yesterday. Like, texting crisis hotlines while sobbing and shaking (741-741 to anyone who needs it!) levels of losing my grip. I’ve been longing to have this “fixed” for so long, but like climate change, mental health is not in any way binary. But every problem in life is no match for care and hope. It might also require patience and tenacity, both of which are a struggle that will come with enough care and hope. Thank you, Hank, for reminding me of that today. You and John give me hope and make me smile and inspire me to care more about myself and the world around me. Thank you for helping this lil nerdfighter fight harder 💚 (If you’re reading this and you needed it, you are loved. You are not alone. You can make a difference. You should definitely keep recycling and stay conscious of food waste and donate to the P4A if you can.)
I'm rooting for you! And if anyone is unable t donate to the P4A, sharing videos, talking about causes that are important to you, and hanging out in the livestream are all wonderful ways to contribute (and voting! Voting on your favorite charities is the most important thing!)
I keep coming back to how it's the middle of Chanukah and this video resonates with some ideas. Not really the climate change part but the concept of how when it just seems like all too much, you have to have some hope and just put in a little effort to do better. That's why Chanukah is in the beginning of winter, when nights are long and days are short, and why the victory of Maccabees against the Greeks was so incredible. Because when it seems like all hope is lost, you can't win, and most likely fail, you just got to have some hope and fight back. And that's when you'll succeed. The night is darkest just before the dawn.
I live in Qatar 🇶🇦 so when a new video is uploaded it’s either really early or really late. I can’t watch the video rn but I’ll watch it when I get home!! See ya soon!! DFTBA
I would say I'm hoping to live long enough to see the green hills of Greenland, but in fact I'm too old. To quote a wise vampire, " if nothing we do matters... , then all that matters is what we do."
There is such a thing as "collapsing of any coherent human structure - bad". And it it is within sight, even at the non-extreme level. Thats not alarmism, just reasonable expectation.
I'm glad you've made several videos on climate change this year! It is tremendously important and it is a great thing that it is coming to the forefront of the political conversation (at least on one side). As always... The power is yours!
Hey Hank! I would be sending this message to you on Twitter, but I have deactivated my Twitter account, so I figured this was the second best place. I am in the middle (almost quite literally - p.160) of reading your book for the first time and WOW I love it a lot. I got the book for Christmas and pretty much haven't put it down since. Thanks for writing such a thoughtful, insightful, entertaining, awesome book :) -long time nerdfighter, Greta
Thank you. I've been learning so much recently about Climate Change and other environmental stuff. I've taken Env Sci and finishing up Env Soc. It's....hard. It's so hard to learn about the Bad and hard sometimes to see the Good being done about it. I've been teetering back and forth between despair because....I kept wondering 'whats the point'? When the world could end...But, this is very helpful. It makes a lot of sense and makes me rethink some things. Thank you, Hank.
Yes, but how can you go "yes there will be climate refuges" so calmly. I mean, as a person who lives in a tiny country whose frontiers are 50% coast, I am worried all the time. I can't even conceive having children partly because of this.
As we used to say in the Navy....: Just keep your heading,( your eye on the prize, your face pointed in the direction you want to go) and keep your oars in the water and eventually you will reach your goal(s).
Almost going off Twitter has made you look so much younger, John.

Thank you.
@Friendly Neighborhood Neocon Go argue with the scientists, not the historian.
thank you for making this video. this type of video is why i love vlogbrothers so much❤❤
Just finished your book. been a while since i've read a book in a day. 10/10 would "you have to read this book" to a friend.
Personally, I think more has been done out of boredom than either hope or despair.
What a lovely comment! Thank you for the well wishes! Best wishes to you too!
@@untappedinkwell thank you!
Don’t worry Hank,
Your last video on the Oumuamua was super awesome. This one is awesome too.
I saw the title and i clicked so fast
Great video. Thank you for continuing Because Of and In Spite Of.
Thank you for helping this lil nerdfighter fight harder 💚
(If you’re reading this and you needed it, you are loved.
Hank, you’re a wizard.
Realize you have no control over anything, accept that and move forward.
I love hope. It’s the preferred fuel of the spirit.

I really needed to hear this today. Thanks, Hank
It's so easy to see things as black or white. Let's learn to be okay with the gray :) Great video 👌
The most wonderful time of the year! Let's make this the best P4A ever!
"We're trying to get to a better place on the spectrum of bad."
That might be just the motivation I need to eat healthier. Thank you.
I'm so excited. I hope we all have a wonderful P4A!
Also. Live punishment!!! ^^
I needed this, thanks. But also, I'm really sick and mourning my dog and felt called out by the video title (mostly in a good way).
Thanks for writing such a thoughtful, insightful, entertaining, awesome book :)

We are not working towards a “fixed state”. We are towards a better place on the spectrum of bad. -Hank Green
I was thinking about how I needed something like this... then the notification came up.
Finally, when people ask me how I am doing, I can say I'm doing good
There's never too much of you Hank!
The title of this video is an accurate description of how my mind feels today haha
As we used to say in the Navy....: Just keep your heading,( your eye on the prize, your face pointed in the direction you want to go) and keep your oars in the water and eventually you will reach your goal(s).
Hank and John are so quotable and speak so much truth!
