I am personally a non-denominational Christian but took great inspiration from this because I believe deeply that most of our religions are interpretations of the same One God and this video helped me realize that my apathy is from my seeing through the worldly goals but that I can become reignited in life for God by becoming a disinterested, not uninterested, party in all things!

thank you swamiji. i have been struggling myself to come to terms with these two opposing forces - of karma and vairagya. if sustenance were not an issue, maybe it would be easier than it is now. because the primal requirement for being sakshi is the sustenance of the witness. and this exercise of understanding oneself as the witness does bring upon one the feeling of apathy. this feeling of apathy comes due to the person trying to move from activity to witnessing, and in my personal case which others may or may not experience is laziness which maybe a natural tendency in some, thinking if everything is maya and will follow its entire course until the sun burns out or man again becomes god, the physical and spiritual limits, what is the need for me to exert effort in this ever changing worldly flux. moving ahead from the need to work for sustenance, i reasoned that it is knowledge and experience that opens up the mind and this again comes from work. physical work in the world sets into motion various emotions from the challenges, success, failure and new understandings and from this comes new insight. also mental work within, exerting the intellect and memory to improve the understanding of the aspects of the mind, body and world. and hence having reasoned this, i am trying to direct all my actions, all my karma towards this end, for the gain of knowledge and experience. this gives me a solution to the problem of karma and vairagya. it maybe called disinterested work, but even in that lies the interest of man to reach god and hence there remains a motive afterall - aatmano mokshartham jagad hitaaya ca.
another issue that i am struggling with and am working my way towards is bhakti. strengthening my bhakti towards god. after having come across the works of vedanta and finding truth in them, one works towards understanding the mind, body, emotions, worldly things, etc. and within himself tries to identify with the true self. but having disattached himself from worldy things, there is now no god that is to be seen or felt and hence the problem of placing bhakti towards god. for if i were to do it blindly towards some unimaginable being or force might go down the road of dogmatism. as Swami Vivekananda himself questioned the existence of god and placed importance of questioning everything before believing it, i find myself not questioning the existence of god, but of finding a source to feel god and hence find a strong connection towards god. i have seen money and i can easily visualize it and feel it and i know what i am going after. similarly i may have seen pain of others and i know i am working towards alleviating that. there is an emotional connect in all of these. but i havent had the slightest glimpse or feeling of god, other than reading books and understanding god to be the force behind everything. so without this emotional connect how is one to bring a strong bhakti towards achieving god.
lastly, if god was eternally god, then why does he not stay that way. why this drama of god becoming man and man again becoming god.
    thank you.

Soham I can totally relate to your struggles of spiritual actions verses dispassion and detachment. I appreciate your input! It clarifies that my motivation is the dance of making "everything" spiritual. My understanding of God comes from my being raised in a penecostal church in southeast USA. If I can describe my understanding of the force that is God, it's the peronalization of Brahman to the personality. The feeling of Bliss and unconditional Love for all. Bhakti strengthens that feeling and is witnessed in the physical body, all for the sake of realizing the Ultimate reality.

Again and again teachers of advaita stress the importance of high ethics/Moral. There is no way we shall have even a glimpse of the Param-Atma, the Divine, if we allow ourselves to be a burden to our beloved brothers and sisters and other sentient beings. We all must overcome any tamasic tendencies, before we can wake up to recognize the divinity in others - and finally ourselves /in reaching beyond the Jaggath-Maya-perception. Peace !

This is excellent discussion thanks Swami. I'm trying too see my work and dealing with my mother as worship. However neither is often easy. The company I work for is not investing in the tools I need to do my job right and its getting worse. Also mom's dementia has been tortuous she has been delusional for years. I was taking care of her at her home untill last year when she go an infection in her leg. Had to get IV antibiotics in the hospital. While she was in there she became totally confused. It was so bad that she couldn't return home. I had to sell the family home this June to pay for her care. She is now in the last stages in a dementia unit. It is a slow and painful process for both of us. At least she doesn't know where she's at most of the time. We are the last of our family left.

I really loved the way you explained it. Apart from the personal emotions, the spirit really wishes to explore itself and expand. Its the body and mind which wants personal emotions to pump. It cant last long. The material itself is not one with us but the one that causes things to happen and occur, the one that is formless but acts behind from everything as occuring, that one is the consciousness

Without changing things, there is no room for growth, it is because change exists that there becomes an experience of growth as well as value of things that are here while keeping the ultimate reality in a conscious state. Golds don't come without dirt, neither are diamonds formed without roughness. If there is a universal consciousness, that means the essence of who you are, as atman and the essence of your real self the paramatman are both interacting with each other appearing differently while being one. So the real you is the entire essence of existence. Not existence but the essence of it and so many things out in the universe you have not yet explored about your true self, the supreme consciousness. So many realisations and dimensions of life are there which are your true self, wouldn't you want to explore it through life? Thats the true reason why atman appeared and perceived itself seperately. Because it can experience growth, which it cannot if it remained infinite and merged in perception from the start. You are the universe seeing and perceiving itself. This vedic knowledge is not philosophy, its a certain reality, many realities exists by perception but the intellectual perception is the illusion which doesn't work as it concentrates more on form than its way of expressions and qualities consciously which our very nature is built of, consciousness
