  • The 1998 World One Pocket Championship in Baton Rouge, Louisiana was the site for this match between Ronnie Allen and Leil “JR” Gay. Allen, was considered by many to be the best player to ever play the game, while Gay was more known for his 9-ball game, but had recently taken up one pocket. It was the classic “mover” vs “ball maker” match, but the “ball maker” had some moves of his own before things were finished.
Freddie The Beard was joined by Tom DiLorenzo in the commentary booth this time.

I've heard more than once that Weldon Rogers was the best one handed player. Don't get me wrong, Ronnie is a legend of legends.

I saw Ronnie play when he was near his best in the late 1960's at Chop Sticks in North Hollywood and he was always fun to watch. Not only did he play great his antics and moves off the table made for non-stop entertainment. Freddie and Tom talk about Ronnie slamming into balls and turning the game around, you have to see it to believe it. The situation would looked hopeless, Ronnie would look like he was taking a flyer but after Ronnie shot all the balls that were in front of his opponent's pocket were in front of his pocket.
I also saw Ronnie shoot the greatest safety I have ever heard of in a one pocket tournament at Marina Billiards in Culver City. Just after the break Cecil Tugwell had a bunch of balls in front of his pocket and Ronnie hooked behind a ball near his pocket. Ronnie took a few seconds to look at the table then masse the cue ball around the stack and hit a ball near the side pocket on Cecil's side of the table. The cue ball then drew, I hope this is the past tense of draw, along the rail and froze against a ball near Cecil's pocket leaving no shot. Cecil couldn't shoot for what must have been five minutes from the crowd clapping and stomping their feet on the bleachers. When Cecil was finally able to shoot he conceded the game. I hope someone else who was there will confirm my story.

I have always had the greatest admiration for Ronnie. Saw him in the early 70's. Im an old man now, but he and Efren will always be my favorite 1pocket players. No disrespect for any of the awesome players coming up.

Damn if he doesn't. Watching Allen break, I thought, "He's got it angled a little left." You might not be able to see it from table level unless you were looking really close. That's a slick move

Freddy "The Beard" Bentvegna, a great under-the-radar money player, and right here possibly the best commenter for 1-Pkt ever. RIP, Freddy, your books taught me a lot, even when your rationale for a shot's success seemed to be a bunch of malarky. Anyone who has not read The Beard's books and seen his videos is missing a genuine treatise qgcof cool bank shots. and stories of some of the greatest characters ever to be bet on pool.
