  • Ready to leave the Constellation behind? Can't find them at the Lodge anyway?
    Maybe you're just thinking of taking up a life of piracy and mayhem? Tired of crew members DISLIKING your life decisions? Don't hire bar scrubs that will disappear the moment you change ships!
    We'll find and test the top non-Constellation Named Crew members that provide the same key ship propulsion, shield, and cargo boosts with none of the judgement.
    So skip Sarah Morgan, Sam Coe, Barrett, Andreja and VASCO. Run with Omari Hassan, Erick von Price, Ezekiel, Andromeda Kepler, and Amelia Earhart. You were never more free to play the game as you choose. ;)
    notes: Spacers Raccoon is essentially a Taiyo Mako. I pulled mine in Piazza III-b. I also demonstrate a strong 'pro Omari Hassan' bias. :) I put Omari into the "Constellation" crew, but his benefits are the same as VASCO and he is functionally equivalent unless (!) you really need the EM Weapon Systems from VASCO. I'm a fan of Omari Hassan as crew. Also clearly, my brain only holds so much information at any given moment. Thanks for watching!

    Awesome video, incredibly helpful. That's pretty much my crew with no constellation crew members. I'm not a big fan of the quest to get Amelia, but she does get you the speed. I didn't know Eziel dude helped with shields.

      I've done Operation Starseed twice it the past few days. It was very buggy before, but I had no problems. Very fast and easy on in NG+ with a well rounded character. More challenging on a new under 20 character with survival settings. I set Ghengis free both times (new for me). Ran into him in space later, which was entertaining.

      @@kineer yeah it was really buggy, no issues the last few times, it's just not one of my favorite quests, it's not bad, just not worth repeating, but if you don't have Sam it's something you need to do if you feel the need for speed. Beside the main quests I probably like Ground pounders the best, great place to get early game loot also, tons of it. Really good likeable voice actors also in it.

    Another free crew member is Moara the Vanguard in the Sol system with the Artifact as a hood ornament. Once you save him he is at the Broken Spear to recruit foe free. He has piloting and a weapon skill...

      You're his hero! :) Along with Raphael, Lin and Heller, Moara the fourth 'main quest locked' companion in the game that I'm aware of.

    Thanks very much for this video. Andromeda did not add a bar to my ship's power, but Vasco and Omari did. My power level was 46 before Andromeda, and same after. I still had 2 empty slots for power on my ship. Maybe 46 is the highest I can go for power on the Prophecy III. I'm lvl 372, and my skills are all maxed out.

      @@svensvenson1196 Exactly. Swap either Vasco or Andromeda out for Sam. Now you have the full +3 power. And personally, I would go for Andromeda. Vasco keeps sinking into my second level floor and messing with foot traffic.

    I read that the sustenance options are broken in alternate universes. Have you run into this? I've missed some videos as I have been a bit busy. Some think it is that food and drink take effect on a new game when you talk to Barret. In alternate universes you never talk to him so they never start.
    Sara is no longer in my game currently. I kind of want to ditch the rest of Constellation because I am so sick of them on me all the time for what I do. Also if I ever go NG+ I want to do a pirate version and they are not gonna like that :D

      I've been running NG+ without them for so long now that when I drop back into a normal game it's a little shocking how much they all have to say about ... well everything. :)
      I'll keep an eye out for this sustenance issue. I still see the "You are Fed/Hydrated" at strange times.

      Rosie would be perfect for this and it would make sense to have her essentially staff the Infirmary. Andromeda seems to gravitate toward the Science hab, to no real effect. It would be great if she (or Dani) gave you research benefits. I hold out some hope that's on a list that will be addressed some day. It's difficult for me to believe they didn't have this mechanism in mind.
      edit: It would be nice to see the same options on outposts too. Install a 'med bay' structure and a 'research lab.'

    The non-constellations are there in case one of the crew dies from the main story.

      Or in case ... you know ... someone sets up a specific constellation member to ... be at the wrong place at the wrong time. I've heard people do that. Certainly not me. :)

      @@kineer Absolutely, I dont mind the odd comment when I walk by or having lots of dialogue when actually interacting with them. The main companions though just never seem to ever shut the hell up, for that reason I never use the constellation characters especially since I usually shoot for 6 to 8 crew they never stop lol

    Frankly, the fuel savings is DRASTICALLY more important to me than you're painting here. This is a "personal preference" thing, but if I can cut a load screen out, it's a massive improvement to quality of life.

      I think I'm far more likely to encounter extra jumps (or loading screens) from "unexplored systems" than from fuel range in the game as it's currently built. This entire fuel system was gutted prior to the September launch as part of the "that's not fun" initiative.
      For example, I can fast travel from Tau Ceti II (far left side of the map) to Hugyens III (far right side) in one shot without any Astrodynamics in a Spacer Raccoon (Taiyo Mako) by adding a couple of small fuel tanks to it. The cost for those tanks is 5,772. I removed one of the pre-existing tanks and got a little cash back as well but leaving me with 350 capacity. The starmap tells me that trip requires 349.1 without any crew (no Sarah). She could save me fuel, but I'm already jumping the full system, so why bother?
      In a special twist of 'current game status', after landing on both planets I can travel between them in a different Raccoon (yes, I have two because 'testing') that only has 140 fuel capacity in one jump.
      The game puts up a warning banner telling me the ship doesn't have the fuel capacity for the trip, but I press (X) and I fast travel across the Settled Systems without regard for fuel.
      Huygens III Landing Site to Tau Ceti II Landing Site in one jump. The game either ignores fuel or just plots a course without involving me that passes through various systems.
      So the "crew" Astrodynamics skill likely comes into play very rarely. If that negatively impacts your game play, you should do whatever you like to resolve that issue including prioritizing crew members. It's your game and more importantly your time.
      edit: Just to try to be clear, I'm not disregarding your preference and I love the question. I read it as "does this assumption hold up" and I tested it. I think the jump travel system is still artificially limited and that maybe in the future it will have the functionality they probably intended long ago (but sacrificed to the gods of release dates).

      @@kineer See, this is what's fascinating to me. I get that error. And it actually stops me from making the jump. I have to find a intermediate system to go to.
      Every single time. One of my first priorities with ships is a massive fuel range increase to avoid running into that error when jumping from system I know to system I know.

    I wanted an NPC tech only crew but I think one eventually left. Would you happen to know how long a Technician will remain in your crew?

      I've only hired a couple of them for Security and sent them to outposts. I have heard others say they are notoriously difficult to chase down, especially when changing ships to smaller ones (lower crew capacity).
