I saw this email this morning and my heart sank. It took me years to find an equal alternative to Adobe suite. I love the Affinity products, especially how publisher integrates with design and photo. If they go subscription model I guess go back to Adobe. I will use my Affinity 2 for many years or until it stops working I guess. For now, I will enjoy my Affinity!
I hate this news. Sales have been hard enough to come by the past several months. I cant handle more exoenses. I hope, hope, hope Canva doesn't mess this up for those of us still struggling!
Don't panic, times are hard but better times always come. Be determined, keep creative and work towards your goals. I use Canva Pro and I am satisfied about it. But there is a lot of features you can do with Canva without a subscription. There will be more revenue to release more features, updates, bug fixes. And according to the news today, nobody will be forced into a subscription in the future.
@@kristiaanverberne8419 No one will be forced to subscribe to the current version. Just like with Adobe products. Like with Z-Brush. We have gone through this more than once, not twice, not even three times. Affinity is over, it's time to look for an alternative.
I'll keep using the Affinity suite as long as I can. But once Canva swallows it up and integrates it into it's subscription model that will be the end of the Affinity suite. I figure maybe a year. I really hope not, it could be great for designers if there was just a link to each other. But I have big doubts about that. Creative Fabrica 's Studio is coming along nicely though. Inkscape has made major improvements. Gimp is always awesome.
I'd be willing to bet on V3 still being made available as a one time purchase, and as said with any additional integrations with the Canva ecosystem being part of a subscription package. We'll see. That really is the point, no-one knows, yet so many people seem dead certain it's going to become subscription only in the near future, without really any basis except that is the general direction of travel for software (which was the the case prior to the acquisition too).
@@Dark0Storm yeah, I really think Canva will split it up with it being like it is now, a free version and a paid version. And possibly a “pro plan” or something similar. I don’t think Canva will go to a completely paid platform. They have a lot of subscribers upgrade after using free for a while. But, like you said, we really don’t know what to expect. We’ll just have to wait and see. 🤞🤞🤞🤞
As someone who is new to Affinity, this scares me. I figured I would get into a system that would be there to stay and not part of the Adobe system. I've seen this happen in other products and features would start to move or "stop development" which required going to "pro" or the like. Or, like one video editor, the "lifetime" part was removed.
I just moved from Photoshop to Affinity and if it goes to subscription and the pricing is expensive then there might be a charge on my account soon coming from the Creative Cloud suite. I really hope this doesn’t happen but is it does it will be a sad year for the industry and the certain end of the Affinity Suite.
I asked Canva in 2022 whether I could download an image as svg and edit it in Illustrator and their reply included the following paragraph “To make sure you comply to Canva’s Content License Agreement, we highly encourage you to create or edit your designs solely in Canva and not use any other apps or softwares to further edit them. This way, you can keep the license for the said image and avoid any copyright claims.” As they have now acquired Affinity Designer do you think they might change this policy?
If they turn Affinity into a subscription model, I would rather leave Affinity and subscribe monthly to Adobe suite instead. I don't want a subscription model at all, but they may well force it upon us. I hope they dont change it as I don't think it will benefit them. The one-off payment model is what drives people to use Affinity, they need to keep that as their USP. I doubt I'm the only person who would switch to Adobe if they force subs model on us.
If they turn it to subscription based model, I'll just won't upgrade to it. I'm working to install it on one of my VMware virtualization servers where I can reinstall it over and over again if they decide to do anything crazy, like make it time expire forcing you to upgrade or the authorization server no longer works.
And here I was just looking for an alternative to Adobe. Oh dear. What to do now. I hate Canva but with work slowing down Adobe subscription is just getting too much 😢
If I could easily access all the canva graphics on affinity … that would be amazing. But we’ll see how it works out. I love and use both of these so I’m cautiously excited.
There are a few ways this could go, the first being it would a paid add on to canva, the second option would be to have a cheap subscription price on the app but do a one time price for a canva / affinity suite for pc, but Iam afraid it will be the third option where Canva gives current affinity owners a year or 2 on their commercial use license and to keep them they will have to go the subscription route. On the canva side I think a lot of the pro elements will go to the free side and the affinity aspects and licenses will stay on the pro subscription and those subscription prices are going to be in line with adobe. On a brighter note if you are a canva user the elements and ai will have the help of affinity to be set in the 300dpi so no more scaling them.
I think there will be a free version for affinity and then also a PREMIUM version that includes new or more advanced versions of the tools plus a Canva subscription. I don’t think they will just completely pull the rug right out from under people because a sudden subscription fee will drive people away. I feel like it smarter to keep it free but dangle the possibility of fancy new and improved tools in front of users so you’ll be more likely to be more likely to try it hoping that the new tools will be good enough where you won’t want to go back to the free version.
What we can also hope for is for it to be included with Canva Pro if the do decide to make “paid”, if you just was Affinity by itself. Also, with Canva acquiring Affinity, Canva may be able to turn Affinity into a design suite that is on par with Kittl. Canva may be realizing that they’re beginning to fall behind in the design space and this may be their big play to try and get back near the top.
I like your idea that the existing Affinity base could be (essentially) recruited to produce templates for sale (?) or at least use in Canva. That would be good business and a friendly overture to the professionals using Affinity.
ah, I remember the CSP drama, when they turned to subscription, and affinity cheekily popping up and saying they will always be a one time fee.. well.. probably not anymore.. I have this weird feeling Canva will do something similar to CSP, where they will continue to offer perpetual licenses but do an upgrade pass or lock some features behind a pay wall. I've never liked Canva myself, but the moment they force a subscription or lock features behind a paywall I will just go back to adobe.
I’m a longtime Affinity user, but now will look into open source alternatives. I’m not a professional photographer or designer, so I don’t need all the bells and whistles of a professional creativity suite.
Canva is for amateurs who have never touched professional Adobe software. Affinity is for pro designers who don't want to pay a monthly subscription to Adobe Inc. The two groups of users overlap very little. I'm afraid they may dumb down the Affinity suit to "empower" the average Canva user.
I found this surprising but like you said some of us use them together anyway. Its probably going to benefit Canva users on subscription more if they're given access to Affinity.
TBH I think this kind of move would be happen for other apps or software . When traction already big enough or fund problem to keep afloat already short , they`ll making same switch . Either it bought by other company or go into cloud and subscription model . Blender maybe the rare case here , I doubt another design company will get same response and donations As long they not forcing us to upgrade and the older version still works fine that would be enough for me . And if they push it I`m glad that I still have Adobe CS6 copy somewhere in storage .
Hey Juna, I'm an amateur office clerk 😅 with both a yearly Canva subscription and a monthly Kittl subscription. I'm mainly using it to create designs to sell on products I physically print and sell locally suchbas tees, hoodies, caps, mugs etc. I know it might be tough to answer but if I could only keep one of the two which do you think it should be?
If you are just using it for designing t-shirts than I would choose Kittl... but Canva has a ton of other things like video, animation, translations, charts, tables and bulk create that Kittl doesn't have
This could go either way, but if Canva are spending a load of money on Affinity, I can see some sort of change. Hopefully, it will mean that Affinity introduces some AI features found in Canva and stays away from a subscription-based model.
I own an old copy of Illustrator but found Affinity easier to use. I'm not adding another subscription, so if they do, I will drop them immediately and go back to Adobe.

I bought all three ... Photo, Publisher, and Designer. So not sure how to take this news. Have to say I'm nervous about the money I've invested though. Hope it wasn't for nothing. Guess we will see.
I purchased Affinity because it is not a suscription model. Also...I'm one of the few who really just don't like Canva. I hope they keep them separate, but I have my doubts that will happen.
I hope they don't mess this up for us. When these companies purchase things to make it easier for us it really turns out their just greedy. Adobe purchased figma and now you're limited to pages you can use inside a file when it was always free, I know XD use to be free now I can't find it. I think canva is going to do the same thing plus they barely can get their legal parts in order.
No. it is not too late. There is a 30% Off Sale that has been going on for a couple of weeks. If you are going to get the one off license, purchase as soon as you can.
Hope Affinity team can really improve their suite possibilities from now on (despite of the subscription model, which is definitely a big NO!) but, from an affinity user point of view, I’m worried about the fact that the suite could become less professional and a lot more consumer friendly. We’ll see…
Wont you still be able to keep your license forever, provided you dont upgrade to new versions that hypothetically become subscription-based? Like it's the case with Photoshop CS6?
I'm excited! 😊 I love using both and always wanted Canva to have the ability to have something like Affinity. Nervous about the cost in the future, yet I'm all for a combination of the 2!
Affinity STILL DOESN'T SUPPORT MAJOR ASIAN LANGUAGE UNICODE TEXT and thay refuse to add this basic feature, but CANVA does - so now maybe it will become better 😂😂
This completely ruined my day! To be honest I feel helpless... I guess I'll just go back to Photoshop, it all depends if there's a subscription or not. Sigh
@@DetourShirts then they better get rid of the word Canva and that tacky headache blue-purple gradient 🙄. Not to talk about the ugly ui they have for their web app 💀
I get why people are upset, but developing software incurs costs. Nobody works for free. You dont buy a car and then expect the servicing to be free. If it goes the way of a subscription based model in future, as long as its reasonably & fairly priced, Im happy with that. If its not, then we go elsewhere or find another solution.
If you can explain how you do that, I'm all for it ! As far as I understand, I have the whole V2 suite in my Apps file (Mac). Is there anything else to do to guarantee that it will keep working when they mess up with any potential subscription ? Thanks in advance... I'm not about to quit Affinity !!!

No. it is not too late. There is a 30% Off Sale that has been going on for a couple of weeks. If you are going to get the one off license, purchase as soon as you can.
What is the one off license I just bought v2 recently.
Nope.. not too late... the Canva changes will take a while to happen
@@timduvall8482 The one off license is one time payment license. Since you just purchased your product you have the one time payment license.
Hope Affinity team can really improve their suite possibilities from now on (despite of the subscription model, which is definitely a big NO!) but, from an affinity user point of view, I’m worried about the fact that the suite could become less professional and a lot more consumer friendly. We’ll see…
Very valid concern. Thanks for sharing
I was just about to purchase Affinity 😐
If you really need it I would still purchase it... it's on sale now
Wont you still be able to keep your license forever, provided you dont upgrade to new versions that hypothetically become subscription-based? Like it's the case with Photoshop CS6?
This is a nightmare. I'm a adobe user and I start using Affinity. Cava is going to destroy affinity in everyway possible. Canva is horrible!!!!
Time will tell.... I'm hoping for the best
Keep all your old installation files!
That's the plan!
I'm excited! 😊 I love using both and always wanted Canva to have the ability to have something like Affinity. Nervous about the cost in the future, yet I'm all for a combination of the 2!
Same here!
Watching now my friend 🫶
Thank you
I just hope that Canva won't increase their Pro subscription due to the acquisition
Me too
is the background behind you real?
Yes.... Is there something that doesn't look real?
Affinity STILL DOESN'T SUPPORT MAJOR ASIAN LANGUAGE UNICODE TEXT and thay refuse to add this basic feature, but CANVA does - so now maybe it will become better 😂😂
I never thought of that.... thanks for sharing
Sounds awfully bad news to me. Can't imagine what Canva will do to it.
Time will tell
If they go the subscription route, I'm out!
Many have said that
I guess Affinity is losing big money and have no choice but to be acquired by someone. At least not by Adobe. Imagine Canva buys Kittl too.
Yeah... it's a crazy time for graphic apps
Since Canva is web-based, I feel like they may build a web based version of Affinity. I love Affinity.
That could be cool
No. No. No!
I know... pretty crazy news right?
This completely ruined my day! To be honest I feel helpless... I guess I'll just go back to Photoshop, it all depends if there's a subscription or not. Sigh
Time will tell... I hope the don't go the subscription model
another one just speculating just get more views !
Thanks?
RIP Affinity.
I hope not... but time will tell
i just dont wanna be associated with the word "canva". it sounds so unprofessional ...
That is interesting... Maybe that's why they bought Affinity to get away from people thinking that
@@DetourShirts then they better get rid of the word Canva and that tacky headache blue-purple gradient 🙄. Not to talk about the ugly ui they have for their web app 💀
If I have to subscribe to anything I will go back to Adobe. Periode.
That's what a lot of people have said.... makes sense

You get the trophy 🏆
नही।। ये नही हो सकता!! Juna bro, this is disheartening.
Time will tell... we will have to wait to see what really happens
No, NO, No Online subscription hopefully with Affinity. Please stop giving them ideas.
I'm not giving them ideas... I don't want it either
We're doomed.
It doesn't look good
I get why people are upset, but developing software incurs costs. Nobody works for free. You dont buy a car and then expect the servicing to be free. If it goes the way of a subscription based model in future, as long as its reasonably & fairly priced, Im happy with that. If its not, then we go elsewhere or find another solution.
Fair point
Noooo
I know right? I didn't see that coming
Affinity Users... get ready to download the apps and block the app(s) from connecting to the Internet 😂
Interesting idea
If you can explain how you do that, I'm all for it !
As far as I understand, I have the whole V2 suite in my Apps file (Mac). Is there anything else to do to guarantee that it will keep working when they mess up with any potential subscription ?
Thanks in advance... I'm not about to quit Affinity !!!
Stop spreading doom and gloom ffs. Read their statement.
True.... great comment
I think this news sucks!
