  • Canva has acquired Serif, the company behind the Affinity suite. Is this good or bad news for the future of the Affinity apps? In this video I share the info we have available and my opinions on the acquisition. I love the Affinity apps and I would hate to see them change for the worse.

The second canva stop offering a perpetual licence there will be millions of users ready and waiting to support the next up and coming software. And I will be one of them.

And that next and up software is? Btw since it is perpetual license you can continue to use Affinity for life. Why would you dump it.

I would hope they are smart enough to not take that route in the future because I agree that they would probably lose a majority of their users. I plan on using my V2 License as long as I can if they make those kinds of decisions

It's clear that Canva saw the comments and the backlash and quickly back-pedaled and said that there would still be perpetual licenses alongside of subscription models. Because as Michael said, why would they not just say that from the outset?

They will integrate both products on a subscription basis. That is what big companies do. Buy out the opposition and kill it off. I pretty much only use my Affinity Photo these days for pano stitching. My go to product is Photoscape X which is powerful and easy to use. I might look at buying the Pro version of Photoscape X.

No, I feel like Canva wants to jump into the professional market and they know professionals will never trust Canva as a design tool even it if improves to a professional level. Now they have Affinity, a trusted name that can use Canva's funding and technology to continue to improve. This gives Canva an instant means of attacking Adobe's practical monopoly.

Whenever a company buys another company.....they only do that with the expectation that they can make more from this purchase than the cost of the purchase.
They have a plan to do that.
Perhaps....they want this new suite of products and they intend to market it to their existing very large user base.....or perhaps they want to make more money from the existing suite user base via subscriptions in the future.
We'll never know until they make a change....anything prior to that is nothing more than speculation.

Based on the fact there was SO MUCH negative comments on the official announcement from Affinity. I hope they are smart and won't remove the one-time payment option. Otherwise I'm sure they will lose more than 60%-75% of their users who wanted to escape from Adobe's greed.
But seeing Affinity removing their official announcement (with all those comments) and making a new one with comments being turned off, I have my doubts.

It is unfortunate that one of the last hold outs will likely become a subscription based model. I think the trade off would have to be a significant increase in value added, in order to maintain customer interest. If they just change the pricing, but don't provide anything, people will likely find other solutions. There are ways to do a subscription model correctly, but most companies don't pull that off.... only time will tell.

Just as I contemplate switching to the Affinity suit after using Adobe for 25 Years (It will cost me A LOT of time to convert all my files and rebuild the ones that can't be Imported) - makes me second guess that move... Also: Corporate "commitments" are worth exactly 0.

Man, I found Affinity 2 after Vectornator became Curve and went subscription. Now Affinity is possibly following that model? Ugh.

IMHO, YES, Affinity is finished as the product(s) we came to love. As a retired 45-year software developer, I have been here too many times. The suits/exec/investors will head off to the Caribean (and some senior softdevs will get rich), but the majority of the IP brain trust will leave, and what will be left is a mere shell of the former product(s) (i.e., I retired from HP after they bought multiple companies that went to sh*t after HP bought them). NOT GOOD! SORRY TO HAVE TO SAY THAT!

Ok so this is a bit of an ambitious question. I’m actually not very familiar with motion graphics but I know you can do that in a 2d animation app called Moho. I remember McCoy buck doing some live classes and videos on him doing a motion graphics children’s book. I didn’t see it cuz I was focused on blender at the time and I kinda forgot about it till I saw your video on how you are looking for a good motion graphics program. Again, Moho is more of a 2d vector graphics animation app but you can do motion graphics too. Maybe you can give it a spin? Do a review and if you plan to keep using it or not?
Also Moho has been a stand alone price for years. But has two versions. Debut and pro. One time purchase.

Sketch was the grandaddy of interface design apps, until they joined the dark side and went subscription. They offer sort-of an optional permanent license now but the damage is done. They will never recover that market from Figma.
I predict Affinity will go subscription and offer something similar to Sketch, but there will be a new contender by then and Affinity will lose a big chunk of their customers.

Now, as I am around people massively switching to open source software and OS, the people in charge need to understand, that if you take away good software from the people that need it, they will put their time and effort to learn something else. GIMP isnt the best software in the world, but I am just trying to imagine, what an angry "mob" of broken hearted software engineers can do and how these companies dont understand it. I think if Canva moves Affinity to a subscription model, it will have to be competitively priced with Adobe. Affinity does not have a Lightroom type of image editor. If you have ever used today's Lighroom, it has lots of editing power beyond even Affinity. I never liked that about Affinity. I will wait and see, but in the end, the gold standard is Adobe. I will probably end up back there. Time will tell.
