Thank you for the Tutorial, There aren't many games on marketplace so now the thing to do is to buy games overseas. I didn't know about region lock until I brought a whole heap of NTSC-US games. the tutorial works and now I can play all these games.

Thanks for explaining how to set this up. I'll add that newer versions of MechaPwn have a bit more compatibility. I was able to get it to work on a Japanese 55000 fat PS2. I could play American PS2 games that I tested on it, but anything other than Japanese PS1 games led to a black screen.

Cheers, no i think you can use the same memory card? if you are unsure get another one (they are cheap enough) and try it out, save a pal and nstc game see if they can both coexist
interesting that the unmodified PS2 still read the audio track on the JP Dino Crisis. not surprising, as it can read any audio CD, but still interesting. btw i already have mechapwn installed on my ps2, i just like seeing people talk about it because it isn't talked about as much as other mods, even now.
Yeah i was amazed that not more people use it tbh mate! its kinda old hat now re copied games but for us retro collectors to play the import stuff hassle free is awesome, well i think so

Edit: I was able to get PAL games to work on Japanese SCPH-50000 model. I first changed the region from SCPH 50000 to US SCPH-50001. After that I changed it to a US debug kitt model. It’s fully region unlocked now

I have a SCPH-50004 console version and I want to change it to DTL-50001 as having the console into an NTSC version with the debug mode but I'm skeptical about doing this cause I don't wanna end up breaking my PS2. You've shown on the video that you changed the model to the DTL USA model (cause the UK didn't work as you said) and no issues, but I'm still really unsure about mine
You can always change it back, dont forget only the 750XXX models are able to fully play all regions and backups, anything below that the flexability is greatly reduced.

deckard models of ps2 can only truly play any region of ps1 and ps2 games. there are some slim models that is not deckard so anything that is 71xxx and 70xxxx models are basically cannot be fully region unlock.
I have a NTSC-J 77xxx console in pink like yours, and I want to be able to play USA games on it as well as Japanese games, so will this work on my console?

I’ve put it on a flash drive in the folder “DVD” I open it up in OPL and it appears but when I press ❎ it says “file fragmented.” I feel like I’m close but I don’t know what to do next.

Okay, everything works. All I had to do was press a button on the TV that switches SECAM mode to NTSC. I didn't even know something like that existed on my TV. I thought I switched this mode when I changed the region in my PlayStation 2. In any case, it is important that everything works. Thank you so much))

When I press X nothing happens, what do I do? Edit : you need a wire controller, no idea why but I was using my aftermarket wireless ps2 controller and it seems it doesn't register in Mechapwn.
Will this enable 60hz refresh rates on USA games on the PAL PS2? it's good that it plays imports but if they're in 50hz it will have issues, if it does play at 60hz I can import me some games 😁
Well it effectively makes the unit a dev/test unit, i dont have any NTSC PS2 games to test it on but given you can reverse it dead easy its a no brainer to try it imho

Hi mate, for some reason YT removed your last comment? it can play ps1 gold discs and ps2 gold discs (but they need to be burnt a certain way) tbh no one in this day and age is really after gold discs, its more for people who want to collect import titles so it will play all retail region games. Free mcboot off ebay mate for like £6 a card i think

Do you need a certain version of Free McBoot for this? I tried this with my SCPH-77004 (PAL) and set it to DTL-77001 (the US-debug) and Chrono Cross PS1 NTSC-U version worked, but the picture was kinda shoddy. The blacks became all grey when I made the console NTSC version. So I tried again and set it to DTL-77004 (EU-debug) and now the picture is good but Chrono Cross just boots up to a black screen :/ The only error I think I might have made is that I have Free McBoot v.953 and not v.966.. Does this even make a difference?
Hey there, I've tried to do this soft mod to play a USA game on my UK 70xxx model PS2. I've got FMCB, got MechaPWN on my USB stick and followed your instructions to change the region of my console to USA DTX. Tried the game and the disc is spinning, but I'm just getting a black screen. Any advice on where I've gone wrong? I'm a total thicko so I've probably missed something! Thanks!

@@dreamboundrsps1111 Yeah but i didnt back it up i d/l from the internet and burnt the disc, tbh there's no real need to be playing burnt discs in this day and age, this is more for collectors who want to play the import stuff. you can play all the "backups" via the ps classic for example and save all the wear and tear on the hardware
Hei, I'm obviosly late to the party, but I did this on my own machine. Me, coming from "Europe" did the same hack as you did. But now I have issues playing PS1 pal games. It seems it is stuck in NTSC-mode. This means that my PAL games are lacking the lower part of the screen. How did you go about this? I am using a Scart/HDMI-converter which has the options to change both screen resolution (?) and PAL/NTSC, but when I try the switch, it is locked to NTSC, meaning I can't force it to the right ratio. Do you have any tips?
Hi, i set mine to a USA model and it plays fine, have you tried removing the scart/hdmi adaptor? i was just going direct via scart or composite, i dont think the res has much of an effect with PS2 as it used to with PS1 etc you could get a component cable which would remove the analogue issue altogether

Hi Moe, read the description, with the 7XXXX series, its the 75XXXXX series you really want as that will mean being to play any region. Your model will be able to play JPN and USA games only

@@AA-by1ki 7500 is the "best model" as it means it will play anything you chuck at it, imports and copies, yes you can do this on as many machines as you like, no once youve done it you dont need the usb stick in there.

I speak from ignorance because I am still researching this mod, but it seems that your television does not support 60hz (a PAL 50hz TV). As I have read somewhere, when you change the region of your console to the USA it is also changed even within PAL games, and most TVs that do not support NTSC show the image in black and white or directly a broken image. As I said, take this information with a grain of salt, but you should try that console on a television that supports 60hz to confirm that this is the problem
@@medanyutu So the mod forces your machine into 60hz sadly even PAL machines/games the image gets cropped, i saw a post from the guy who made the mod and there is no way around it, re the black and white image i would agree with you re the TV :)
@tootyuk yea, back when I imported Naruto Ultimate Ninja 5 from Europe to use my swap magic on, I found that it wouldn't display properly on any tv's I connected to. It's actually the only PAL game I own, simply because I was of that crowd hoping it would come to the states at some point.

@@mitkobalan4340 Hi the disc language isnt influenced by the console region, so if your german spiderman has an english option then it should play, what you cant do is make a german only game play in english, the phat versions cant play NTSC games only 75XXX models (slim) can
its been updated to work faster and more benefits like faster load speed as well as just pickign a Multi 7 region instead of DTL basically made the process easier

Not for your model no you need a 75XXX model
After setting it to an NTSC region, can you still play PAL games, or would you need to reset the region to PAL again?

America mate, aslong as you have a 95XX series it will play anything, as you are turning it into a dev kit.

The slim has a better laser than the fat models. You can put that laser to hell and back and they still work with heavy usage and scratched discs

Oh did you change it from a PAL machine to an NTSC model, perhaps your tv doesnt support 60hz?

Okay, everything works. All I had to do was press a button on the TV that switches SECAM mode to NTSC. I didn't even know something like that existed on my TV. I thought I switched this mode when I changed the region in my PlayStation 2. In any case, it is important that everything works. Thank you so much))

the 75XXX are the only ones to run games from all regions im afraid anything less is locked to that region (pal/ntsc)

Will this enable 60hz refresh rates on USA games on the PAL PS2? it's good that it plays imports but if they're in 50hz it will have issues, if it does play at 60hz I can import me some games 😁
Well it effectively makes the unit a dev/test unit, i dont have any NTSC PS2 games to test it on but given you can reverse it dead easy its a no brainer to try it imho

You can change it back to stock, which means its back to how it was before i.e only playing PAL or NTSC games

Hi mate, for some reason YT removed your last comment? it can play ps1 gold discs and ps2 gold discs (but they need to be burnt a certain way) tbh no one in this day and age is really after gold discs, its more for people who want to collect import titles so it will play all retail region games.

@@Addictivemeh yep you can just re-apply mechapwn and set it back to your region of choice, so retail (CEX) and then the model and region

I tried this with my SCPH-77004 (PAL) and set it to DTL-77001 (the US-debug) and Chrono Cross PS1 NTSC-U version worked, but the picture was kinda shoddy. The blacks became all grey when I made the console NTSC version. So I tried again and set it to DTL-77004 (EU-debug) and now the picture is good but Chrono Cross just boots up to a black screen :/
The only error I think I might have made is that I have Free McBoot v.953 and not v.966.. Does this even make a difference?

Hey there, I've tried to do this soft mod to play a USA game on my UK 70xxx model PS2. I've got FMCB, got MechaPWN on my USB stick and followed your instructions to change the region of my console to USA DTX. Tried the game and the disc is spinning, but I'm just getting a black screen. Any advice on where I've gone wrong? I'm a total thicko so I've probably missed something! Thanks!
Added update, I changed back to PAL CEX and my console now won't play any of my PAL games either. Have I broken it? 😭
only 75XX models will play any region, read the description.

@@dreamboundrsps1111 Yeah but i didnt back it up i d/l from the internet and burnt the disc, tbh there's no real need to be playing burnt discs in this day and age, this is more for collectors who want to play the import stuff. you can play all the "backups" via the ps classic for example and save all the wear and tear on the hardware
Hei, I'm obviosly late to the party, but I did this on my own machine. Me, coming from "Europe" did the same hack as you did. But now I have issues playing PS1 pal games. It seems it is stuck in NTSC-mode. This means that my PAL games are lacking the lower part of the screen. How did you go about this? I am using a Scart/HDMI-converter which has the options to change both screen resolution (?) and PAL/NTSC, but when I try the switch, it is locked to NTSC, meaning I can't force it to the right ratio. Do you have any tips?
Hi, i set mine to a USA model and it plays fine, have you tried removing the scart/hdmi adaptor? i was just going direct via scart or composite, i dont think the res has much of an effect with PS2 as it used to with PS1 etc you could get a component cable which would remove the analogue issue altogether

Hi Moe, read the description, with the 7XXXX series, its the 75XXXXX series you really want as that will mean being to play any region. Your model will be able to play JPN and USA games only

It will work on most models, look at the info re serial numbers only 950XX models cant be fully unlocked i believe

@@AA-by1ki 7500 is the "best model" as it means it will play anything you chuck at it, imports and copies, yes you can do this on as many machines as you like, no once youve done it you dont need the usb stick in there.

I speak from ignorance because I am still researching this mod, but it seems that your television does not support 60hz (a PAL 50hz TV). As I have read somewhere, when you change the region of your console to the USA it is also changed even within PAL games, and most TVs that do not support NTSC show the image in black and white or directly a broken image. As I said, take this information with a grain of salt, but you should try that console on a television that supports 60hz to confirm that this is the problem
@@medanyutu So the mod forces your machine into 60hz sadly even PAL machines/games the image gets cropped, i saw a post from the guy who made the mod and there is no way around it, re the black and white image i would agree with you re the TV :)

@tootyuk yea, back when I imported Naruto Ultimate Ninja 5 from Europe to use my swap magic on, I found that it wouldn't display properly on any tv's I connected to. It's actually the only PAL game I own, simply because I was of that crowd hoping it would come to the states at some point.
I think most will be running at 60hz so should be ok can you not run them out via component at 1080?@@codyr.48

@@mitkobalan4340 Hi the disc language isnt influenced by the console region, so if your german spiderman has an english option then it should play, what you cant do is make a german only game play in english, the phat versions cant play NTSC games only 75XXX models (slim) can

Hello bro, I used mechapwn on my ps2 scph-90010, now it is Japanese dtl 90001 and when I try to open freemcboot it doesn't open, I also tried to burn ulaunchelf and it doesn't work either, I don't know what to do, I'm really upset, I think it's bricked
reverse it if you are worried, also you dont "open" freemcboot it loads at startup and changing the firmware doesnt alter that at all
