Omg … you have NO IDEA how much we as Japanese need this to be covered. It needs to be seen outside of Japan because our media is too corrupt to report this stuff. Yeah NHK did but it was only 2-3 mins of air time at 4pm where no one’s watching tv.
The media is not corrupt. Media is used to influence people to think and agree with certain perspectives. This is not just a problem in Japan, but worldwide. Even in the US where I grew up, the mass media was very biased

I think the main reason why people do not think of Johnny as a predator, and why he got away, is because his victims did not treat him like a criminal. They thanked him instead of pressing charges or blaming him.

My friend didn’t want to join but his family member send the application form without his knowledge. I think several of the trainees have this experience..my friend passed the paperwork but didn’t go to the audition, thank god..

It's sad that these young kids ... have the kind of mindset that what this man did wasn't wrong. That they felt some payment had to be made because of what this Predator gave them as far as being a JPop idol. It's truly sickening ... and unfortunately.... When one of the idols said they thought they were treated with love I wanted to throw up 🤢. But as I was thinking about it and thinking about how disgusted I was a thought came into my mind that just made me incredibly sad. Maybe they think these things because that’s how they cope and survive. Predators are very cunning when they are dealing with their victims. However, most predators don’t care about their victims feelings. Predators care about their own wants, needs, and desires. So maybe some of their victims feel these things because it’s the only way they can live with what was done to them. It’s scary when someone so rich and powerful can do whatever they want. They can do much better things for the idols, but not taking advantage of them. So sad when these things still happen today. I hope someone in any industry or company can speak up against inappropriate behaviour towards their artiste. Maybe not much but could help and protect the victims mentally and physically.

I'm a Janiwota since 2017 and allegations of this creepy old man were all around back then. I just remember feeling relief from the news of his death back in 2019 but I hate the fact that he didn't take any accountability.

When I first got into Jpop in most groups where from this company and I still listen to Arashi a lot. To think what all those young boys had to go through... It's so upsetting he was never stopped and that many people still think it's not a bit deal and are grateful that this monster made them succesfull.
I like Arashi a lot too. I can’t start to think what if this happened with the boys too. But I guess the more successful the artists now, the more reason they won’t open their mouth and testify. So in the end we’ll never know the truth.

He was building up and opening a resort in Okinawa and was also working on establishing an Italian restaurant. News said he's been spending a lot of his time over there overseeing the business while living life at the same time. It's signs that he'll probs just gonna leave showbiz altogether, we'll see.

I'm an Indonesian and I'm literally a new fan of Arashi. I can't imagine those awful things happened to them back then. They're so talented. I wonder are they gonna speak up? I was a HUGE Kat-tun fan back then. When the revelation came out i was so incredibly crushed. I couldn't believe it, Akanishi even posted him. You don't need to be embarrassed to be Japanese. What needs to change is the shame/honor culture which hides things of this nature because they are "shameful" instead of exposing them. This way of thinking and doing things in Japan needs to change.

My first introduction to asian music was J pop, Kat Tun, Hey! Say! JUMP and Arashi were my faves. I have not heard them for a long time since I got more into Kpop, however, always remember those groups earnestly. So, knowing of all this, gots me scared of what those boys might have gone through 😢

It’s more prevalent in the entertainment industry because a lot of celebrities are owned. A lot of these business people who run these companies are owned by people who are higher up so they’re protected.

The culture is also apart of this, the gratitude of victims is always expected but they said what’s wrong is wrong. It is incredibly heartbreaking to see young men suffered. Also as a casual fan of HSJ and KT, being a fan of Jpop groups are incredibly hard and they are really closed off. Entertainment industry is really muddy waters, they are like a playground with no limitations for rich and powerful. It’s also important for the fans/ people to support the victims rather than blaming them.

I watched Mobeen's documentary recently and it was shocking at how accepted the abuse is by so many victims - but by far the worst part was where one victim said that it was tolerated by some parents as being an idol was seen as a way to become rich - he even said kids were told to "offer up your ar** to Johnny" if that's what it took. I know abuse goes on everywhere, but I was shaken by this programme.

I have been in love with Arashi for years and years but when this came out I was horrified, so horrified I cried everytime I heard their songs for a while... Then I felt terrible for the boys and what they endured so I kept supporting them but not Johnnys, I'm so glad you touched this subject, thank you so much.

The investigation is still ongoing and beyond the fact that he has left no further information is publicly available. Omg this story is literally the exact same as the boy band history in USA! It's crazy, it's exactly the same pattern, just different villain, so disgusting. As a Johnny’s fan. This story is not surprising. It’s been happening. Their parents know about it. But choose to ignore. The group that debut def successful in Jpop world. Kuan come and talk about the news. But soon the story will be lost in the sea as nothing happen. I grew up with Johnny's Jr and groups which debuted., from Ya ya yah, Hey Say Jump and all. It's just so heartbreaking and sad to think they went through this. They are near my age, and when they joined as trainees they were average 9-12 years old, mind you. Like 20-15 years later now that I am almost 30, the perspective is so different. I hope they get the help they need.
Arashi were the first ever Asian boyband I listened to back in 2005, and because of them I discovered SMAP, Kat Tun, TVXQ, Super Junior, Shinee, and many other Asian idol groups that gave me so many happy memories. I actually heard these rumors many years ago back when I was 13. Which is part of why I stopped supporting Johnnys company. It’s heartbreaking to know it never stopped and he was never brought to justice. He had some extremely powerful connections both in the Japanese and US governments who must have protected him. I hope all his victims can live peacefully now.
News was my group, I feel like I watched Yamapi and Kamenashi grow up. (Yamapi was my bias before bias was a thing)

I am not japanese, but I did some japanese studies at uni and the relationship Japan has with sex is something else. Someone could say nonchalantly in public that they've dated a younger person that was clearly not of age and that they’ve help that younger person grow.. All companies working with idols need to be investigated and better regulated. In reality, it would be a painful experience for many. But, it is the only way to protect idols and prevent future harm.

growing up seeing groups like hey say jump, news, etc. being so big, i thought they had the strategy down with a good producer, but as soon as he passed and people spoke out, i realized how bad the conditions were for some, and only hope they got the right help, and can be happy he's gone and exposed now.
To this day kpop companies still treat idols the same way a lot will not come out on public due to censorship but to this date we see it from companies to toxic fandoms, the idols dont have a free personal life because in one hand you have the company boss who controls their lives and outside they have fans who are very toxic and harrasses them every single day online that some times pushes them to commit suicide due to the social pressure. Kpop and Jpop are just to tough on the artists.

This has actually been known for awhile it seems. Even while being stateside, my younger brother and I used to listen to a lot of jpop groups from Johnny, 15-20 years ago, and we heard the rumors THEN. Not surprised, there are A LOT of nasty old men out there willing to take advantage of young boys (and girls, but these dudes seem to prey on young boys a lot).

You cant really put the blame on the fans for this, especially for international fans. Coming from an international (ex obsessed?) fan of JPop during the 2008-2012, it was hard being a jpop fan.
do keep in mind, Japan has very strict rules for their media distribution be it in music, movies and TV shows. And if a music video/movie/TV show are not flag/reported or taken down, they were mostly like fun shows like yayaya (gosh I miss this show), shows that portrays the trainees and idols having fun doing challenges on the show.
Even news articles are hard to get due to the language barrier. if there were articles available for international fans, it was most of the time from fan blogsites (with untrustworthy english translation).

worst part about all of this is that most of us where aware of the rumours. i've been a johnny's fan since 2012 and since then i've known of kitagawa's crimes from the "dear hikaru genji" book. apparently they went to court but since johnny's is so big in japan they swept everything under the rug and it became nothing but rumours.

I have been enjoying their music since 2010 without knowing the dark side of Johnny's jr. No wonder some of the trainees left and chose to debut under other entertainment agencies even the popularity wouldn't be as famous as Johnny's. Have been slow down to watch them after 2019 as it is tiring to see them just covering their senior's songs, plus it is really difficult to find their content.
Before knowing about this scandal of Kitagawa years ago, I did get this vibes of him and seeing the documentaries and videos of the idols and age range in the company did get me uncomfortable a bit, but now knowing these facts my suspicions were correct.
That is so sad.
SM was created heavily influenced by Johnny's idols and overall from the Japanese idol system and through SM, the idol system in Korea was created and became what it is today.

Becoming big in japan and topping the oricon chart is a massive thing i dont think they really cared too much about the korean charts as in the 90s and early 00s it wasnt really that big. Also arashi was quite/very well known in korea so was smap.
Lawsuit and exposure should be broadened to include accessories to the cover ups. Though perpetrator is dead, the people who are covering up the dirty deeds still need to be punished.

The fact that people were so scared to speak out about him says a lot. People in positions of power should be harshly regulated and punished since they also enjoy the privilege of their positions. I feel so sorry for the boys who were brainwashed into believing this was the price to be paid to fulfill their dreams. These people create such heinous structures in the industry to make sure young and impressionable kids don't have other options but to endure this type of exploitation. I hope they can heal from this trauma and get the justice they deserve.

That time I just prayed that the boys don't suffer abuse hoping that as they became popular they will be treated with care... bcoz even as international fan (NEWS, HSJ, ND, and lately SM) I do know of these news from blogs/ LJ groups... there is also a thing on favoritism that you can tell from shows like SC, YYY... entertainment industry do have a dark side in any country...

I have read about this when I got into Johnny's Entertainment/ Johnny's Jr. fandom (Hey!Say!7) in 2007... The articles sounded like rumors and I took it with a grain of salt. I stanned every Junior (literally kids from 8-17 , I was a kid that time too lol) I see in Shokura but the thought is in the corner of my mind...when I hear this happens in Kpop too, I was not surprised and the thought that it might be true is reinforced. It is utterly disgusting. When I heard of his passing I was kind of relieved...but people said the successor, Julie Kitagawa is worse.
I used to be a stan of the groups for four years. And everytime i want updates frome their groups, i just couldn't find any article or pictures of their artist, sobthats why is so hard to find😅

The "Stockholm Syndrome should really be renamed "Tokyo syndrome", because unfortunately in Japanese society most people are used to being gaslit 24/7 and putting up with all forms of abuse from powerful people, without allowing themselves to even *think* something is wrong. Thus it's no surprise it took a half-foreign kid to speak out louder than ever before this time. Japanese culture seems designed to make sure that powerful people can do whatever they please without facing any accountability for the pain they inflict at all levels of everyone else below them.
