    Mt Wilson, at 5,710 feet, is the peak with all the radio towers that sits behind the LA skyline. It’s not the tallest peak in LA, but it’s a great hike with a fun summit. Multiple hiking trails ascend Mt Wilson. This hike starts at Chantry Flat, which gives you a gentler climb to the Mt Wilson summit, a trailhead store, bathrooms, and great views of LA on the way down. It’s a fun hike and a good long hike for beginners.

    Watched this video before doing this hike yesterday. Really helpful! It was a Monday, there were very few people at Chantry Flat, and incidentally the store and café were closed. I drove up from San Diego and didn’t start till 9 am, but there was almost nobody parked there. I descended via Upper Winter Creek and didn’t have to climb back up the pavement 👍🏻
    Thanks again, it really helped to know what to expect. I will check out your other videos as I progress through the six-pack :)

      Nice, yea, Mondays are a great time to do any of the popular hikes, not many folks around. And yes, Upper Winter Creek is another option but I think the lower trail is just a bit more scenic. Either way, both good options. Good luck on the six-pack!

    Last weekend I did the hike starting from Sierra Madre specifically to get the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, only to find out they only had turkey! I was crestfallen. :) The hike was awesome and thanks for all your info! Next time I bring my own PB&J

      If I were you I would hire some powerful attorneys and sue. I do believe the Bill of Rights has something in there about PBJ... glad the hike worked out otherwise, it's a nice one...

    Did this in January 2018, fire breaks on the way up, chantry flat trail on the way down. Exhausting. Great views of LA

      Oh yea, lots of trees, lots of noisy squirrels when you get to close to them. Really lush and beautiful here.

    Thanks for all your efforts Chris! Can't be easy lugging around the camera gear but a guide like this (and the VR version) will definitely help future hikers complete the loop safely.

    Super fun hike to overnight at spruce grove. Planning on going further and checking out the Devore campground. Heard it’s nice.

      Haven't done Devore but did Spruce a few years back. Agree, really beautiful. Been spending more time in this neck of the woods lately, been a while, forgot how nice it is.

    You can skip the fire road beginning and climb out at the end by taking Upper Winter Creek Trail. Slightly tougher than Lower Winter Creek Trail but a nice ending with the downhill.

    Great video! So on the route you chose the last 2.6 miles before the summit has 2480 of elevation change, 18% plus grade, wow!! That looks like a workout for sure!! I imagine a lot of people take the longer slower loop around?

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think this is the long slow loop! Yea, the end is tough but it's not so crazy if you've got decent fitness. The Toll Road out/back might be easier but this is the big popular loop that most folks do. If you do it when it's warm out those last steep miles can be tough with flies around. That's what always gets me. Covered in sweat with flies in your face. Anyway, give it a try, it's a fun one.

    Hi Chris, great job. I appreciate all your videos. I'm about to backpack this, but instead of Mt Wilson, I plan to detour halfway towards Devore and West Fork Campground. My first time backpacking the LA region, although I've done northern Cal and North Carolina before. Do you have any recommendations on 3-4 night backpacking trips in the Angeles National Forest that don't have too many people and have decent tree coverage? Thank you!

      Cool, thank you and glad the vids have come in handy. You can construct a nice mainly shaded loop hike on the Gabrielino Trail + some others, this map is a great guide and starting point: caltopo.com/m/CHDL

    Hey Chris, I'm a beginner hiker and looking to do this trail. Your video is very helpful. But, I'm a little squeamish of heights, and probably wouldn't do so well with the narrow sections of the trail looking down the falls shown at 4:09. I see that at around 3:40 you chose to go to the trail on the right, do you know if choosing to go on the left avoids these types of areas (steep drop offs, narrow trails)? Also, you mention that the 2 options of left/right converge together eventually, do you know about where that happens?

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, just take the upper fork of the Gabrielino Trail (left at 3:40) and it rejoins the guided hike after about a mile. Just make the left when you get to the T.
