  • Sitting atop this mountain's 5,700-foot tall peak is the iconic Mount Wilson Observatory. Two of the three telescopes, the 60-inch and 100-inch, were the largest of their time in the world for decades. Today, however, only one of the observatory's three telescopes is still used for astronomy.

Pity there is no mention of why the place is so important...

@Harry Zombie Because this is where Erwin Hubble discovered that 1) there are other galaxies in space and 2) that the universe is expanding. It changed the way we viewed the universe more profoundly than anything since Galileo.

    Wow! So wrong!
All of the telescopes are still active to some degree. Some research, some education, some for rent by residents of LA...
No, I'm not joking. Have 25 friends with $48 to spare? A group rental is $1200. Rent one of the best telescopes in the world. I've done it! Hell, Emma Stone has done it for her birthday!
Also, Desmon zoomed onto the TV towers.... ... but didn't show the "CBS" tower, which is actually to the far left of the POV. It's the huge red and white tower off on it's own. Why? That's because it's on private property and not on a National Forest Service lease. That's why it's taller than all the other towers.
    Great reporting CBS,.
    Regardless...
Go! Enjoy! Next spring donate for a tour at the Cosmic Cafe and enjoy some history of the most scientifically important ground based Observatory in our life!time!
Not gonna lie, Hubble Space Telescope was more important. Regardless, this is Mecca of cosmology, the Vatican of science! Yes, I know that the Vatican has an observatory in Arizona but Mount Willson Observatory did more important things.
