I have always subscribed to the theory that the Red Lotus killed Sokka. Because that would've established them as a legitimate threat and gotten them put in the kinds of prisons they ended up in.

TBH I think that Sokka did appreciate Toph as a friend, but if he ever did have children he would not "abandon" them. He is too much of a family person to not care for his children. And Toph could not have been a casual hookup that ended in a child. He was ashamed of himself kissing Suki under the full moon and that does lead me to believe that he would not date anyone if Suki was still alive. So either Suki died and Sokka, in his grief and misery searched for the shoulder of his friends and that lead to more in Toph's case and she never told him or Sokka isn't Su's father
yes I think so too. I think that happened after Suki died and from what we can tell based on this theory, Sokka met the same fate as Suki pretty early so I think either Toph didn’t tell him (and by the time she wanted to, it was too late) or she did tell him but again it was too late
I agree so far and would like to add that it'd explain toph's isolationism was from some form of guilt. Maybe she had refused the opportunity to accompany him on the mission because she was secretly pregnant. Then sokka dying the one time she wasn't there really messed her up. A grief so strong that even when she ended up raising her kids poorly, the others in the gang did nothing to help. I mean they could have all been shocked at the reminder of their own mortality and collectively decided to follow sokka's footsteps of duty above else to the detriment of all their children. It's the only explanation I have for such a tight knit group who encouraged each other to grow in character would suddenly forget how when they all raised their kids poorly.
The exception being zuko, since we never see his children. I think we saw his grandson but that's not direct enough.

I mean yeah, except him, Tenzin was the first airbender to be born after a century and it’s a big deal to him but like Kya and Bumi…
@@lazylazerrsp8781 That does not add up. If Sokka died protecting Korra while Toph was pregnant, then Su should be younger than Korra and she clearly is a lot older. Her oldest Son is about Korras Age. I think Sokka dying did mess her up and that's why she left Republic City, but she couldn't be pregnant at the time of Sokka's death/murder
@@omegasybers1110 I'll be honest i completely blanked out on the ages. It could just be that due to them both being public figure they kept their relationship secret. Then that'd explain why toph took the most drastic of approaches. Whether that be arresting her own daughter for petty crime or straight up leaving society to live in a bog known to only let people who truly need you to find you.
I'm convinced lava bending comes from someone being descended from a fire bender and an earth bender, hence Bolin being able to do it.

Seems to me that, just like the president here in the US, he still retains the title, or at least is referred to by it, on the account of not being one that died before the next in line took the throne.
I love that for Zuko because his sister didn’t get to be firelord after everything that happened and his daughter took over him is such a power move

Just think of it as the Hokage even after Hirazen retired the first time and Kakashi and Tsunade now in Boruto are both retired from the position they are still referred to as Lord Third or Sixth/ Hokage or Lady Fifth/ Hokage. Zuko isn’t the official Fire Lord anymore but he is still respected as a former one and it probably just habit to call him that now.

I am glad we got to see Sokka in a flashback, making reference to his boomerang and Combustion Man while he speaks in the United Republic Council. It's nice knowing he helped form the city but I wish we had seen more of him.

I actually like the therory that baatar (suyin’s husband) is actually the one who’s sokka’s kid (and I like to think suki’s earth kingdom roots gave him the green eyes). They bear a strong physical resemblance and his and suyin’s children who look like sokka clearly take their facial structure from their father. Also, they’re both non bender inventors which may very well be a coincidence but it’s still a point worth mentioning I think.
Honestly I like this idea so much more cuz it gives room for sukka to still exist and because I find it extremely hard to believe that sokka would leave toph to raise their daughter on her own

Sokka the backbender
One mistake. In Toph's Metalbending Academy she meets a lavabender and mentions it's a very rare gift. So like flight for airbenders, it's kind of a known unknown. Still stands that Sokka couldn't have prepped for it.

@Clinton Jefferson Wait, are you trying to say that the timeline of reality in which LoK aired before some of the AtLA comics came out trumps the timeline of the avatar universe? So Toph finding a lavabender _during her childhood_ and likely telling her friends about it happens *after* they encounter Ghazan in their adulthood?
@@The_Celestial_Fox No, I'm not. Because LOK came out first. The comics are influenced by it because it's the future of the Avatar timeline.
@@clintonjefferson6494 You can't really say that though because you don't know how far out Bryke planned the timeline. From the time they were developing the OG show, they always knew how seasons 2 and 3 were going to transpire. They even had a season 4 planned before we all go Shyamalaned and they went for the movie instead. I understand better what you're saying now, so thanks for the clarification, but I don't 100% agree that the show influenced the comic, again, only because we don't know how their process works and how far ahead they plan and develop the story.
Only one point of note for Gazan. Gazan didn't create lava bending himself. It was actually revealed in a comic book about Toph's life after the war was over that there was a kid who could lavabend and his name definitely wasn't Gazan. That means that Sokka could definitely have known about lavabending before that fight. It's still possible for Sokka to have been beaten by Gazan but he certainly wouldn't have had no knowledge of lavabending.

@@melancholygirl7793 yes, but Kyoshi was an Avatar. Sun in the comics is the first non-avatar lavabender, and Gazan was the first non-avatar lavabender in the show. Up until these characters and Bolin lavabending was thought of as an Avatar exclusive ability.
I never read the comics but unless sokka was there to know about this kid he still might not have known
and if I remeber correctly the kid also enrolled into Toph's metalbending academy, so its possible that Sun (the lavabender) and Sokka would have interact. And creators also said that the comics and novels are canon with the show.
Two things, katara needs a statue and sokka needs resolution.
Saying that it seems to be fan consensus is that he died during the rescue of baby korra and is why the red lotus are so feared, they killed one of the team avatar who ended the hundred year war. So the fans have resolved his story, also I think that it makes the red lotus a much more bigger threat.

I think the most frustrating about this is implying Suki is not a member of Team Avatar. In that case, you're wrong, she was a member of the GAang at the end of the show.
She is a member but she doesn’t have quite as much plot relevance than the others. So from a certain perspective it kinda makes sense why she isn’t referenced in Korra
Also every member of the GAang have a relationship with one another but Suki really only has moments with Sokka.
She was a Kyoshi warrior with her own squad and responsibilities and NOT Team Avatar, just like Iroh ( who was also in that scene ) was a Fire Nation General and later secret White Lotus member and NOT Team Avatar.
@bengarrett4984 and Zuko was Fire Lord with his own responsibilities, and do you not consider him a member of Team Avatar. Saying she can't be a member of Team Avatar because she's the Leader of the Kyoshi Warriors is extremely floawed. The difference between Iroh and Suki is she was confirmed as a Member of Team Avatar in the show.
There's a character named "Sun" in the comics, canonically he was the first (non avatar) lava bender. He not only met Toph but he briefly fought her, quickly got outmatched and became one of her pupils in her academy.
Also looks a lot like Opal. Not to mention he semi-confirms the fan theory of needing fire + earth heritage for lava bending as he has gold eyes (characteristic of the fire nation) and is names sun (what firebenders draw their power from).
Quick nitpick: Zuko stepped down from the Fire Lord position and gave it to his daughter, Izumi. She has the top knot holder specifically for the Fire Lord. He's still called Lord Zuko though.

Once Sokka became an adult, details on his life are a bit harder to come by, and that includes the details surrounding his death. The last known sighting of Sokka came in 158 AG, when he was 74 years old. This occasion saw Sokka and others protect Korra, the next Avatar, from a group called Red Lotus. But, by the time The Legend of Korra's main story takes place in 170 AG, Sokka had passed away. So, Sokka died sometime between 158 and 170 AG, and the cause of death is believed to be natural, as he would've been between 74-86 years old.

To be fair it makes sense that all the Gaang members would have statues except for Katara.
Each of them holds an important public office that could give you a statue in real life.
But Katara seemingly focused on being a mother to her children, maybe helped govern the southern water tribe (which is a lot less prestigious and down south they don't seem to have a lot of art pieces like statues around at all) and be a teacher to future water healers so while her work was very important still, and her name is probably in a lot of history books she might be the least famous out of the group

Especially because Katara seems like the kind of person to refer to him as Uncle Sokka. Although it could just be another way to show how Tenzin is a bit reserved and tries to be respectful.
I think that Suki's name was (understandably) confused with Tsuki in the video. Suki means "love" and Tsuki means "moon". Still very fitting that Suki's name means love and she was Sokka's longer lasting love in the series. In fact, this very similarity (or pun) between the two words is central to a form of love confession in Japanese: 月が綺麗ですね (tsuki ga kirei desu ne), "the moon is beautiful, isn't it?"
It's worth noting that Suki does not in fact mean "moon" in Japanese. That would be Tsuki. It is however very likely that that was just a mistake on the part of the creators and both girls were meant to be named after the moon, much like maka'ole was supposed to mean "blindness" but actually means "eye-tooth". You still shouldn't eat the berries tho 👀
adding more context, only one variant of Tsuki (月/つき) is moon (or moonlight [which is also tsukiakari (つきあかり). japanese is weird like that], at times) in the fashion everyone thinks of when they think of moon. there's like, 14 variants of Tsuki though (mine is ツキ, or Luck) . though there are derivatives that add context to things involving the moon. they usually mean things like setting moon or waxing moon, etc.
and suki (typ 好き/すき), usually just means like, as in Like Like. which would fit the character as well. it also has like, a bajillion meanings depending on context.

That's been my fan theory about Sokka's death ever since it was mentioned in LoK season 3, but I like the addition that it could have been Ghazan who actually killed him. Maybe Ghazan himself didn't do the deed, but it absolutely could have been because of him that Sokka's (assumed) plan fell apart, leading to Sokka's death. The idea of a member of the original Team Avatar giving his life to protect Aang's next incarnation just feels too perfect.

Am I the only one who thinks that Sokka is actually the father/grandfather of Korra's mom?
Korra's dad is the chief of the southern water tribe while being from the northern tribe, but the tribes have been shown to follow a lineage system for their chiefs, so that means that the current chief should be a descendant of the previous chief. Korra's dad being from the north suggests that his wife must be the one with the connection to the previous chief. That previous chief would be Sokka. His father was the current chief during ATLA and Sooka is literally referred to as Chief Sokka in LoK. So that tells me that Korra's mom is Sokka's daughter/grand daughter.

so, i've heard the theory about Sokka being Suyin's dad, but those same grandkids look a lot like their dad Baatar too. especially Baatar Jr.
that said, we don't know who Baatar's parents are. so my theory is that Sokka and Suki are Baatar's parents. which would mean that Sokka's son and Toph's daugther end up together, which is kinda poetic.,
And wouldn't be the first time the children of the original crew are together if so. Lin and Tenzin were a couple before he left her for Pema.

@@JOVONO yeah, like, as much as Toph may have had a crush on Sokka, he's devoted to Suki. Unless something bad happened to her, he wouldn't go with anyone else. So the idea that he got together with Toph is strange.
I would like to point out that the fortune teller in season 1 said Sokka would meet his demise in a violent way and it would be self inflicted. A throw away joke at the end of the episode, but it is canon she said that.
Someone said that Baatar is Sokka's son and that seems most likely to me. His son Baatar is an inventor and his grandson Huan that looks a lot like him is an artist, and Sokka loved to draw.
We need more official Sokka lore. Its weird his story feels so blank compared to everyone else.
I always just assumed Sokka ascended to the spirit realm like Yue during that fight with Zahir. After all, nobody really states that he was killed outright nor are they ever outright saddened by Sokka's lack of presence. I just figured that all this time he finally became mature enough to ascend and rejoin Yue.
Yue didn't exactly step into the spirit realm. She died to restore life to the spirit of the moon. The only way Sokka would be reunited with her would be through death.
@@SgtSupaman Exactly, which would then imply that Sokka used the very same ultimate sacrifice to fuel a spirit battle in order to save his best friend's reincarnation. But he could only ever do it once. But yes Sokka still exists, but he's now just in spirit form.

Also I don’t think you can just ascend to the spirit world and I don’t think Yue is in the spirit world anyway because she’s the moon so she’s in the physical world

@@huskysled , fuel a spirit battle? What does that even mean? The fight to protect Korra was a physical battle against physical opponents. Sokka doesn't have any connection to the spirit realm to do any special crossing over.
@@SgtSupaman In the season one finale of ATL, we know that La goes on a rampage in the absence of Tui because the forces of push and pull were thrown out of balance. Yue has the power of Tui in herself and gives herself in order to restore balance. But what if the balance is tipped the other way and a life is given to La? It stands to reason that Sokka, the guy who pushes forward for progress, planning and invention would be compatible with La the water spirit that only attacks by pushing water. That water being pushed into fire nation soldiers, very physically real opponents. Given that we know Sokka very likely becomes a member of the white lotus, his progressive enlightenment over ~50 years, in combination with his yearning for Yue. I have no doubt he could make the crossing. However, I do not think this would come at the cost of either La or Tui/Yue because, unlike Admiral Zhao, Zaheer never gets punished for violating the spirits. Therefore, unlike Yue being pulled into her responsibility to replace Tui, Sokka must push his way into replacing or merging with La. Besides it's a more fitting end for Sokka over just getting bodied by the red lotus.
I'm pretty sure the Team Avatar knew about lava bending before encountering Ghazan. There's a comic about Toph meeting a lava bender. Ghazan didn't invent lava bending. Although i think they had little to no experience in fighting lava benders.
With regards to Sokka's death, there is no reason to postulate that it was a murder because as someone in the comments already pointed out he died between 158 and 170 AG which would make him between 74 and 86 years old. Old enough to be natural death. I don't know why so many fans like the idea of Sokka being killed when there is absolutely no mention of it in canon. But if someone did kill him, then it was probably a member of the Red Lotus.

It sucks because i happen to think sokka had the most potential after yet it wasn't fully realized....he got shafted.
I feel sokka got killed by the only non bender.
It makes sense that all benders fought eachother to protect/kill Kora but then Sokka couldn't defeat his own opponent because the enemy is better trained, Zahir also isn't afraid to kill to make a point.
He has a record for killing goverment leaders so if anything Sokka would've been the main target for Zahir.
Side note on the whole "Katara not having a statue" thing. This is totally just my opinion, but I feel like she wouldn't want to have a statue of herself just based on her personality. She always was considerate of others, wanting to help those in need, and overall had a selfless personality. I feel like people offered to have a statue built for her, (as everyone else had one built) but she refused the offer because she didn't want people idolizing her (even if the statue is meant to honour her, not put her on a pedestal). She didn't do the things she did to impress anyone or gain attention. She merely was wanting to help the Avatar and her people find and restore peace. She felt as though accomplishing that was enough for her. A statue probably felt a little selfish and possibly even childish in her eyes. Again, just my opinion and thoughts on the matter :)
This is my first thought. There is no way one of the heroes of the 100 Years' War and wife of the Avatar is not important enough to have a statue made of her. She clearly just did not want one in her image.
I'm more interested in what happened to Suki. she wasn't even at the court case.
It's been awhile since I've watched the show, but I don't particularly remember Suki's character being all that interesting at all. I felt she was kind of unnecessarily given an honorary part in the gaang. Can I ask what draws you to be so curious about her? Sincere curiosity.
@@novamarie2162 simple. She was not even mentioned except in the first title sequence. Did they break up or something? I want to know what happened between them. They seemed like a good pair and I want to know what went wrong.
During LOK, Zuko's daughter Izumi was fire lord. Zuko did appear in Season 3 when the Red Lotus was making their move in capturing the Avatar.
ACTING fire lord they make that clear meaning her father still is fire lord but like Azula during the comet Izumi was given some control over the nation a proxy for the time being likely her father is more or less slowly giving more and more of the responsibility over to her so he can actually retire but not just shoving everything off on her all at once.
I always kind of liked the idea that Sokka just lived a normal life, but wasn't as healthy as the others because of his diet. He was always the 'normal guy' (his words, not mine) in Team Avatar; it's fitting that he was the only one to have a normal, peaceful death.
That said, I *really* like the Red Lotus theory, although if it were true I feel like some character somewhere would have mentioned it.
I really do believe that Sokka, in his time of grief, leaned on Toph for support and things got a bit spicy. But later he realized that he shouldn’t have led her on, and broke things off. Toph would’ve probably been too ashamed or embarrassed afterwards to tell Sokka that she was pregnant, and kept that secret. Then Sokka died… and now she could never tell him that he had a daughter. It’s heartbreaking, because you really can see so much of Sokka in Toph’s youngest daughter, from her young arrogance to her later mature growth. Even his grandson looks a LOT like him(the artist)!
If Suyin were to be Sokka's Daughter that would mean Tenzin and Lin would be related.

@@omegasybers1110 Katara is Sokka's sister. If Suyin was Sokka's daughter that would mean that Tenzin and Lin would be apart of the same family tree. Lin and Suyin do share the same mother. It'd make Tenzin and Lin half cousins. Because Tenzin and Suyin would be cousins. They'd be family.

I've always believed that lava bending could only be done by an earthbender with significant fire nation lineage, just like we see with Bolin
Also, I'd say the theory about Sokka's death makes a lot of sense! Those parallels between the different Lotus groups are a really interesting point; I honestly never really thought about that or paid close attention to that detail. 🤔
I'm really happy this universe and story is being continued. I love Avatar and have watched it more than Id like to admit.. i also appreciate how Korra was essentially a more grown up story of Avatar. Things got a lot darker and more complex and I really love it. I can't wait to see what they do next with this beloved series and universe.

This actually makes perfect sense on retrospect because the Red Lotus were sentenced to life in prison for the kidnap attempt. That seems like an odd punishment for that crime as Ozai Is given life in prison for genocide then life in prison for being PART of a kidnap attempt seems kinda harsh for this world unless you consider the fact that they killed a Republic City Council member.
Most likely kidnapping and potentially attempted murder. They might have also murdered/attempted murder on other figures.
@@joesunday199 but again I'm sure it was stated that the failed kidnapping attempt was what got them their sentence meaning that even if they did commit crimes before that wasn't what they were charged for.

Sokka being Suyin's father is an age-old theory within the fanbase, and if I'm being honest, I feel like Sokka's involvement in her life could have been from a distance, as he's not seen within the flashbacks/memories that Suyin and Lin share. The two of them never really got along or were able to see past their differences until later on in the series... so unless I'm mistaken, one of the girls' fathers must have been present, but I don't see that as not being Sokka. Kanto, on the other hand, is more likely to be seen as the one who Toph hooked up with.
A little headcanon I have that lavabending is only possible if the earthbender has firebender ancestry. Think about it, who's the only other lavabender we see that's not an Avatar? Bolin and what's Bolin? The son of a Fire Nation woman and an Earth Kingdom man, his brother is even a firebender!!
There isn't any proof that Ghazan has Fire Nation blood.

I believe the Southern Water Tribe cultural center was actually blown up by Varrick in an attempt to blame Northern Water Tribe, to get Republic City to fight against Unalaq.

One little funny detail that supports the theory that Sokka is Su's father is that you can actually see his dragon bubble detective pipe on Lin's shelf at one point! It's in season 3
That might just be a gift and nothing more. It's too small of a detail and not focused on. If it was an heirloom that showed importance to Suyin maybe but I kind of doubt it was a gift from father to daughter.

I've the read the Kioshi and Yangchen books and they are great! I'm looking forward to the next one, I def recommend them.
I always considered sokka died to zahir, mostly due to the fact as a fellow non bender they probably would have been matched up against each other. considering, Zahir also would have most likely gunned straight for sokka do to him being a current world leader (idk if zuko was still firelord at the time). Alternatively I could also see unalock taking sokka out in some kind of covert underhanded way, since he had shown in his season, that uniting the 2 tribes was always his goal for harmonic convergence, and sokka most likely would have been against that.
Also considering the type of prisons they were locked away in they were most likely considered war criminals by the time they were done trying to kidnap Korra. I highly doubt that if all they managed to do in that time was kidnap Korra and lose a fight they would have been punished so harshly
So, the red lotus killed Sokka, and Tenzin doesn't feel it's worth mentioning that his uncle was murdered by them...?

Although Kazan didn't invented lavabenging (cuz there was a lava bender in the books after the war), it makes sense that Sokka died cuz of him ... That would also explain why we can't see the death scene. Imagine a guy dying in lava. It would be pretty hard to watch and explain in a "children's" show

I don’t think that Red Lotus killed Sokka, or Sokka died during the Red Lotus capture, if either happened then it would have been brought up with “unfortunate chief Sokka did not survived that encounter” or “chief Sokka tragically gave up his life for their capture”.
But I do think that the Red Lotus caused something that led to Sokka’s life to be shortened (lose of limb, ruptured organ, poisoning, hypothermia, burns)
It does feel like they would say something like that out loud, but they also intentionally leave a lot unsaid in this show so ya never know
I love the idea that Sokka and Toph had kids. We know Tsuki is reported to have died young, so I figure after Toph and Kanto broke apart and Tsuki died, Toph and Sokka hooked up.

Maybe they stayed together. I do not think Sokka and Suki had kids, otherwise we would have heard of Tenzin's cousin(s).
And Suyin could be Sokka's daughter but only if he broke up with Suki first. I do not believe Sokka would cheat. And I do not believe Toph would keep that secret from the rest of the gang.
Honestly I think the reason that Sokka is the only one dead out of the OG 4 is because.... He's not an bender. Sokka is the only one in the main group that can;t bend which leads to the interesting episode of him earning a space sword in the last season. Also I think the reason Katara and Toph are still alive is since they're benders they live longer lives. In my HC benders live twice as long as non-benders. Since LOK takes 70 years after ATLA it would make sense htat SOkka is dead but the others are still alive.

@@JOVONO yes but that was most likely because he was already 112 year old at the time of the OG series. Remember canonically Aang is 113 at the end of the series (the series takes approx 1 year to journey so its presumable that they all aged 1 year). the reason he dies so young esp for an avatar (who are known to live extremely long lives) is its believe his life energy (or chi) was being drained the entire time he was in the iceberg as that was what was keeping him alive. thats also why Aang dies around 150 only 38 years after the war. theres YT videos explaining this if ure interested. Also my apologizes if I made it seem like no one saw the show. I just meant it as a refresher.

Suki doesn't mean "moon" in japanese, moon in japanese is "tsuki" or "ketsu", Suki means "love" or "like" in japanese. It's separate from "aishiteru" which is more akin to familial love or deep love, but it is what you'd use for a girlfriend or boyfriend.
Gazan couldn't have invented lavabending hundreds of years after Kyoshi was using it.

I am pretty sure lavabending was discovered (not invented) by toph in one of her comics. She found someone who had the skill and goes on to teach him how to control it.
That said it shouldn't change all that much in terms of the theory because lavabending is unbelievably dangerous so it is definetly reasonable to assume that Ghazan took him out.
Also this just popped into my head as of writing this, assuming sokka fell to lavabending, where did Ghazan get the necessary earth from since I assume they were at the south pole at the time, right?

the best part about Sokka was that even tho he didn't have powers and was set aside as the comedic relief character he hand his moments when he has a serious moment, we start to love having him around more. I think the moment I knew Sokka one of the GOATs was his reaction to Aang burning Katara. even Though he is a goof he knows how to drop some real world instincts
Before the theory gets going, I'm gong to say it was the Red Lotus during Korra's kidnapping attempt and his death is a huge reason why Tonraq and Tenzin's over-protectiveness, that's been my theory for years...
Called it! Honestly, Sokka going out fighting is my preferred death for him, he was a warrior before all the other occupations. If Ghazan was the one who took him out, I feel like it was his magma star that caught Sokka by surprise and wounded him badly enough to eventually kill him but not enough to entirely take him out of the fight.
