    I've used my KA grinder for seventeen years. As a hunter I grind my venison. It also works great for ham salad and chicken salad. Leftover turkey at Thanksgiving gets used up too.

      Katherine Fish You're welcome. Glad you liked it. Some people will partially freeze their meat, such as for one hour, just to get it cold enough so that when grinding, the fat is a little hard and feeds better. If you put room temperature meat through it, the fat will be harder to grind as it will not feed good. My meat was in the refrigerator at 35 degrees, so it was cold enough. This grinder doesn't feature any special attachments for making sausage. So I'm not aware of how to cram that into any tubes. We don't make our own sausage, so no biggie. Perhaps there is other information available on that. If you just want to perform a basic grind like I did, then you should be fine. I hear the Artisan models lack power compared to the Professional models. If that is true and if you have one, then you may need to cut your meat into smaller strips or cubes. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment :-)

      I do love the 6 qt...For some reason tho I use the 5 qt more often. I don't know if it is because I've had it so long and I am used to it or that for most regular sized recipes, it is the perfect size. For bread making tho...I use the 6 qt most of the time.

    There is also another major difference that is important. When Kitchen first sold these plastic body grinders, there was a problem with the plastic cracking where the metal joints with the plastic. KitchenAid modified the housing in later made units having a larger metal piece that is molded around the plastic minimizing the cracking of the plastic.

      +exhibitjean Thank you for watching and commenting. Just be careful not to feed anything down there that you intend to keep whole (like your hand) :) Hope it goes well for you. I liked grinding my own meat for hamburger. I made a four pound hamburger patty (part of my seven pound cheeseburger). No gristle or bones or anything in there.

      +Eric Learns to Cook Dear Eric, I followed the directions and it went well, except, I got the grey goo coming out of the middle of the grinding plate. Any advice for me?

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +exhibitjean grey goo? food goo or something lubricating the grinder goo? I grinded that hunk of meat with only meat and fat coming out. You washed the parts before assembling and putting together?

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +exhibitjean I Googled kitchen aid meat grinder goo and found someone similar on ChowHound. Different ideas. Some think it's a defect. Some think it's the lubricant coming out, especially if you are jamming that meat in there. A general good idea when working on meat (meat slicer or grinder) is to partially freeze it so it chews it up. If your meat is not very cold, then it's kinda mushy and the grinder has to bog down depending on the size of the slices you are feeding it. If it is the lubricant, it might be ok as it should be food safe, but it's disgusting. I hope you didn't get much in there. One person mentioned using the cap of an ink pen to catch it. Not sure how they did that. Some reports of connective tissue can get wrapped up around the thrust bearing in the back of the auger and can cause problems. I'm thinking you should tear that thing apart, wash it up. let it dry. run some dry bread (heals are fine) to make sure the auger gets good and clean and no more ooze, and then use some slightly frozen meat slices so you aren't overworking the grinder.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +exhibitjean Last comment because you asked.....make sure you are 'guiding' the meat to be grinded, not cramming it in there. Try a slow speed like "2". It might be the fat doing this if it is warm and getting squeezed by the moving parts in there before it comes out. None of that sounds tasty. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

      +Julie Nolan Thank you Julie for watching and commenting. Glad you enjoyed it. If you ever find yourself doing this, please consider lightly freezing the meat and feeding narrow strips thru it. And limit it to only a few minutes at a time (and refreeze your meat while waiting for the motor to cool down). Apparently KA didn't feel the need to market the limitations of this, and one of their technicians responded in a forum to some users reporting some grey goop coming out. Luckily, I didn't have the issue, but letting the motor "warm" up from prolonged grinding is not a good idea. I made a 7 pound cheeseburger using this ground meat. Should be entertaining if you choose to watch it. Once again, thanks for watching.

    Thanks Amanda! For grinding hamburger, this definately does the trick. I know of some all stainless steel ones that cost much more (and are pretty nice), but for basic hamburger grinding, this does a good job. BTW, the patty weighed 4 lbs and the other 3 lbs of toppings made it 7 lbs altogether. We should have the "EPIC Hamburger Show" posted in the next few days.

    I just got mine from Amazon, costing $29. Intention is to grind up some lamb to make gyros. I've read many recipes, but would love hear your take on making gyros.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks David. I have never eaten a gyro, let alone make one. We would have to come up with a non-lamb/non-dairy sauce version for Amy, or I'd just have to make one that she can't eat (but I could). I haven't researched this, so you're ahead of me on this one. But I could include it for future video. Let me know how the grinding goes. Meat like chuck roasts are best partially frozen/cut into strips so it feeds without getting all gooey.

    THanks so much. Im presently debating my first stand mixer choice(in my 60s). I cant decide between the Classic Plus, Artisan. I know many Artisans were mass produced; high% w/trouble (Amys is sweet- Not like Amys sale 5Qt)? K.A.tests side by side still rate the classic; classic + really well (Now empty nester, so small batches). As disabled adult living near countries largest family owned cattle ranch, Ppl can give me 1/4 side of grassfed beef- too much for one although if I could grind, I'd have more uses. Id just love to make my own ground sirloin! This was informative. It also reminds me the Pro6 series is one of the loudest models-LOL, you were shouting over it. seems smaller are quieter, an important factor. happy holidays, you two are wonderful.

    Never put the grinder attachments in the dishwasher! The heat is what causes cracks! Probably because the metal bearing sleeves expand, The wrench should only be used to remove the nut not install it, Lube the arguer shaft with a little veg/olive oil before use, it keeps the bearing surface from galling as it can get hot under a load. This was leaned from mom and her million year old kitchenaid.

      +AmyLearnsToCook I'm talking about real sausage, like Polish Kielbasa. It's really, really delicious. Fyi: if you don't have a smoker, you can just boil (actually simmer, never boil) sausage and eat it with mustard or anything that's little hot (horseradish is perfect) and of course homemade bread.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jw got a smoker, so not an issue. Amy's issue is 'natural casings' made from intestines. If we had something that isn't disgusting, then we'd be ok.

    There are a lot of ON-LINE sites, and I agree that Kitchen Aid does NOT provide a lot of details.
    I grew up just a few miles from where the KA (Hobart) was made, always knew of their quality and durability.
    KA booklet needs re-worked. ONLY speaks to using Round Steak.....which is expensive.
    Also recommends VEAL ---- certainly out of the price range of most people, and almost impossible to find !
    Should include a few hints, including for making sausage.
    My SET of attachments were less that $80 at Sams! The mixer, 4.5 bowl, with full size motor was less than $180. at Walmart !

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Green bananas? You going to dry them and make banana flour? If so, this might not do it for you as it's a meat grinder. Meant to grind meat into fine or course grind. If you're not making flour, then buy one and give it a try (as long as you buy from someone with a good return period).

    Do you have experience with the metal grinder on the 325 watt artisan tilt head? Do you feel the wattage is strong enough to grind without burning the motor out?

    • @EricLearnstoCook

      I have not used that. I'd think if grinding some soft you might be ok. But cracking wheat would kill a Pro 600. Sometimes you need a dedicated grinder for the job.

      Ours works pretty good. I do see the reviews. We haven't had a problem with the grease but we also don't use it that often. Based on those reviews, I would probably stay away from it. If you want to do a lot of grinding, you can get a stand alone meat grinder that might work better.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. The problem is KitchenAid doesn't leave good directions on how to use it. I found some forums that talk about it and "someone" from KitchenAid responded. I'd probably use this for small jobs. One thing I didn't do was partially freeze my meat. That is a recommended thing to do as the auger likes firm meat better than 'mushy' meat that is very flexible. I hope that helps.

    For what it's worth, the instructions say that all of it is dishwasher safe EXCEPT for the two metal plates and the metal cutter. I like to handwash everything, then put the DW-safe parts in to get sanitized. Also, the directions say NOT to use the "wrench" to tighten the collar onto the grinder, only hand-tighten it. The wrench is to aid removing the collar if it somehow got stuck on or is now too slippery to take off by hand. If you wrench down too hard trying to tighten it, you will crack it.

      Techie Grandma thanks. It doesn't come with a sausage tube, but I'm sure if there is one out there, Amy will find it. I mostly use it for hamburger or chili grind, but I'm sure that I'm under utilizing it. Sausages are a good idea because sometimes it's hard to find some tasty sausages to grill up.

    • @AmyLearnsToCook
      @AmyLearnsToCook  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Techie Grandma There is a sausage stuffer that you can get to go on the grinder. I want to make some chicken sausage because they always use cheese when I see them in the store. You can grind sausage up without the sausage stuffer and form them into links or patties without a casing.

    Geez, how do you still have all your fingers left? Those knife skills are abysmal. Cutting side to side like that is an accident waiting to happen. Also, using that wobbly cutting board can't be safe.

    • @EricLearnstoCook
      @EricLearnstoCook 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sean Tobin I agree, my knife skills are not very good. No problem keeping knives away from the fingers, but I will consider using an electric knife on larger cuts of meat so that i can keep my hands further from the blade. Regarding the cutting board, we usually use a cloth under the cutting board to keep it from sliding. I'll consider using a non-skid material instead that is much thinner so the larger cutting boards won't wobble. Thanks for watching and your comments. We appreciate it.
