Everybody is in the same boat. When things were so called "good" before Trudeau, our wage increases were frozen for 6 years. Now because we are asking for huge increases it is because we need them. It is not our fault the Alberta government didn't keep up with the cost of living increases. 9% over 15 years is a huge pay cut. Inflation according to the Alberta government was 31.6% during the same time frame.

Rail safety is vital. Only having one engineer, or having engineers that are over tired is begging for accidents. I remember the Mississauga train disaster. The cost of those accidents is astronomical to our economy. Safety is paramount. When workers say ‘we don’t want anymore hours, no matter how much we get paid’, LISTEN to them!

Engineers work 8hr per shift period. I know I worked for the rail way some years ago. Have you ever been or seen a train stopped in the middle of say Cobourg? Why you ask? that is an engineer who has finished its 8hr shift. Not a care in the world (good on him) for the passengers or the goods. He shuts the train down and calls the yard. We would then have to get a shuttle with a new engineer and rush down to nowhere to exchange the engineer so the train go start again.
Bad scheduling you say? Indeed and that guy doesn't care either he write the schedule the way he is used to and does not care about the consequences.
It is just all a big circus.
And the railway? they do not care either, they know they run the Canadian economy and if they have a deficit they turn to the government and say we need you to give us $$$, or else...

We as a people don’t respect other people and our workers business is business yes but corporate greed is a big issue.
I work in food and we were Federally mandated to work at least 50hrs a week most of us doing 55-60hrs to keep the shelves stocked and Canadians Fed. I can’t name drop due to confidentiality but we are one of the biggest food producers in the world and we split up. The Americans did America and our one little factory in London Ontario did all of Canada. While also helping the Americans and the higher paid guys make $30 with a cap at $31 which takes you about 15-18 years to hit the cap in this facility with quality raises.

I work for the railway and I’ll try to break it down.
      1. The union offered to stagger the strikes so that rail could continue to move for 1 of the companies so that the country wasn’t screwed and that each companies union could handle the bargaining at different times. The problem is, cp and CN are working in cahoots and would rather screw the country than sit down and have actual conversation. This is why when they filed for it to be brought to arbitration the government shut it down because they haven’t been trying to negotiate at all they were relying on just forcing us back to work instead of having meaningful talks.
      2. The companies tried to push this new contract where every single thing in the collective agreement that’s been protecting us workers for decades they want to completely scrap it and Instil whatever they want making seniority almost meaningless. They want to have the ability to send you away for month on end to remote places across the country to fulfill shortages” whenever they want. They want to get rid of our days off and they want you to work more and are trying to aim for 1 man Crews. Now for people who are moving explosive toxic hazardous stuff going through hundreds of towns you’d think you would want the people handling this stuff to be well rested but these companies would rather cut corners and risk safety every time and the government gives them a slap on the wrist for the dangerous stuff they pull on a daily basis. The amount of people that have died the amount of property damage these companies have cost something needs to be done every 2-3 years these companies get more and more greedy and would rather put people and the economy at risk for profits than do the right thing. Look online at all the bridge collapses derailments and stuff that’s been happening with these companies and ask yourself why this stuff is happening so frequently. If someone took a private camera and recorded what’s been going on behind the scenes and all the dangerous crap these two companies are getting away with and people found out people would lose their minds

Lets stress that... Employees were LOCKED OUT, by both companies at the same time. On Purpouse.
Both CN/CP unions agreed to stagger their strike if it came to that, but companies didnt want that sort of bad optics, so they're using that to try and force the government the back to work legislation.
I walked away from CN because of the forced relocation thing. I couldnt abandon my family for 6+ months, and they didnt care "show up or quit" was the company stance.
And 100% the workers are exhausted on shift. Imagine being up all day, going to sleep late, then getting a call an hour later "you need to come to work for 8-12 hours... and dont kill yourself or others", and if you try and explain you're tired and are just going to sleep, they just write you up and scare you with demerit points and getting fired. Some of the people i worked alongside were coming in hung over, or just tired, it's amazing there arent more collisions between movements.

I grew up in the sticks during the rail cutback in onatrio. Train tickets moved you slower than a car, and my total time waiting for trains to pass doesn't come close to the average modern commuters wait in traffic over a single year. Cars were the problem. They still are.

I see a lot of “corporate greed “ which normally I would agree BUT in this context you must zoom out. The issue has been with safety and overtime which ultimately relies in management. Why is there overtime? Because there is shortage in staff. Why is there a shortage? because we live in times with high inflation and little economic growth across the country, this pushes companies to make critical decisions leading to budget cuts in their organization that ultimately results in losses and other consequences. It’s not greed of companies but it’s the ecosystem that businesses respond too…no need to describe the ecosystem system of Trudeau’s Canada..we all know it.

Older fart here! I remember back in the early 80's in the US, when the air traffic controllers went on strike. The President at that time, Ronald Reagan, told the controllers that if they didn't report back to work, they would all be fired. I realize that the union is against a set of different grievances compared to what happened back then, but the point I'm trying to make is that our PM doesn't seen to have the *alls to get involved on behalf of the whole country. I'm not against the union as it seems that the management should cave a bit, but instead they lock them out. Not good for future negotiations? I think that we need a bit stronger leadership from the FEDS in this matter, instead of hiding from it. There's a lot of people at stake here!!! Just my old fart opinion!

We would then have to get a shuttle with a new engineer and race down to nowhere and exchange the engineer so the train could start again.
Bad scheduling you say? Indeed and that guy doesn't care either, he writes the schedule the way he is used to/told to and does not care about the consequences.
It is just all a big circus.
And the railway? They do not care either! They know they run the Canadian economy and if they have a deficit they turn to the government and say we need you to give us $$$, or else...

We need legislation to stop corporate greed and those CEO raises.
We need legislation for a 90-10 law that means the CEO your highest paid employee can only make 90% more then the lowest employee like your janitor. Now if the CEO gets a raise, the workers all the way down also see a pay increase to keep the 90-10. This is what we for big companies.
Who cares about the economy if you are a worker this is the only way to get yours. I work in food we are very under paid for feeding the entire nation. We had to work 60hrs during covid to keep Shelves stocked and food on Canadians tables we were federally mandated and we hardly break $30/hr unless your at the top of the pay scale. This is why young people don’t want to work anymore why bleed and sweat for a nation and company who don’t care. Especially when if you have a trade or work with your hands you’re really not making much more after taxes on EI as you would be working. We need a restructure to drive the markets and get people happy and back to work. Happy workers are good workers.
