  • Steve Winwood in a 2-song late night TV performance that was broadcast in May 1991, including an interview where he talks about recording with Jimi Hendrix. The BetaGems channel also has "Steve Winwood 1989 Night Belongs to Michelob TV ad," "U.S. Top of the Pops 10-2-87 Los Lobos, Squeeze, Steve Winwood, more" and "Traffic 6-6-94 Marina Park San Diego UNRELEASED."
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded between from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on TH-cam or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.

I had endured watching Arsenio Hall's show just so I record Steve's appearance, performance and interview. I had this on VHS for years and saw Steve with this absolutely killer band a month later in Philadelphia. He is truly one of the most gifted musical geniuses of the rock era, hands down. Thanks for posting this.

Steve Winwood is an amazing musical talent and a very good guy. Still going strong at seventy five. Love his music.

Steve has always been my favorite of all time. I knew SDG but when I heard the 1st Traffic album, it was over. I was amazed. Been to many concerts and all his albums. So charismatic live and he doesn't have to try. Love this man.😀

I saw him live a month later at Holman Stadium in Nashua, NH. My absolute favorite musical artist.

@SEZWAH It was supposed to be Joe Cocker, but it ended up being Warren Zevon. I didn't know who he was at the time.

@SEZWAH I was only 18 at the time. I got to know Winwood through Traffic first. Zevon was interesting. Honestly beyond Werewolves in London I didn't know anything about him. Creative for sure! It was a great time. Sad Holman only had concerts for a few summers.
