    I was happy to see that Nick finally got the numbers he was looking for on the Buick 455. Milling the heads, and the thinner head gasket made a nice improvement in the HP, and torque numbers. It's too bad that there were no flat top pistons available to use in the engine. 10.5 : 1 compression would have helped the engine even more, but the Buick will be a nice cruiser on the street. George, the background music when Nick finally got the numbers he wanted was spot on, and I got a laugh when I heard it playing. Excellent video, I enjoyed it very much. I hope that everyone has a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year, and a better 2022.

      Surely the Buick Specialists have flat top pistons available... wonder if Nick checked the valve sizes while in there to see if basic or Stage 1 valves... the bigger than stock cam along with still lower compression ratio is reducing the torque peak... just like a hyper tripower GTO engine had lower peak torque than the 4 bbl. version, yet more HP... plus peaks come at higher RPMs...
      Also, this cam likes to go to 5,000++ RPMs... even more with some basic pocket porting... like 5500 - 6000 RPMs...

    When I was young guy, I lived in Flint Michigan and learned Quadrajet tuning. The power piston needles on the Qjet had different tapers available. If the engine came with an EGR valve, the Qjet would have leaner part throttle needles. If you blocked off the EGR, you would get spark knock from a lean mixture, changing the needles would fix the problem. You didn’t need to change the main jets, only the power piston needles. It’s possible that Qjet on the stage 1 had an EGR value if it was a 1973 motor or a 1973 carburetor.

    • @michaelmartinez1345
      @michaelmartinez1345 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Herbert Hart , great sugestion, for mid-range tuning.... Change the needles that move inside of the main jets on the primary side of the carb... They need to be slightly thinner when the m.a.p. is - during the carb. part-throttle position (cruising)....

      @@michaelmartinez1345 In the 70’s, we had a Q-Jet carburetor shop in Flint which sold every jet size made, every needle size… primary and secondary for all Rochester carbs. The needles have a “XX” code stamped on them. They had a chart showing the end size diameter and the taper diameter, so you could pick out what size you thought you needed. We didn’t have O2 sensors then and tuning was by feel and sound. I was a 16 year old kid back then… fixing carburetor problems, doing tuneups and changing timing chains…

      @michaelmartinez1345 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@HHH22229 that is awesome!!! These carbs are not so bad, and when properly set-up, they do quite well. I have done some tuning on 750 & 625 CFM Edelbrock (Carter) AFB's... Some with mechanical secondaries, some with vacuum secondaries.... The main thing that they needed were needle & jet changes for the primary barrels... For lower vacuum engines with aggressive cams, the lower tension 'staging springs' helped to bring them back into the right air/fuel ratios... Dialing in these carbs gave excellent results, when done AFTER the other changes were worked-out on the engines...

    Great to see you building and testing the Buick 455 and then sticking with it to get it really running well.
    Question: Is there a reason why you don't view the output as a graph? The chart of numbers is obviously helpful to correlate things like fuel consumption and oil psi with power at some RPM, but a graph seemingly makes it easier to spot how the power rises and falls throughout the sweep -- including the peaks. Just curious.

    • @kiisu74
      @kiisu74 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      i've wondered the same thing. A graph would make it easy to see the big flat torque curve, especially on this 455. Furthermore, its a little frustrating (but fun, too) watching Nick chase a big number when real performance is measured in area under the curve which a graph would clearly show.

    I used to run 455's. All were .038 over with flat top TRW power forged pistons, zero deck, heads cut .100, custom grind cam was between stage 1 & 2, and big valve springs. If that isn't a big Q-jet power will suffer. They need 30 deg. of advance and at least 100 octane. I have a set of the 10:1 pistons in the garage, somewhere.

    Nick, I struggled with the same parts availability in my Buick 455 build last year. There was just nothing available in any reasonable time. I ended up with Weisco forged reverse dome pistons and just took more off the deck to compensate. I went .50 over on the pistons because that’s the only size I could get…which makes it a 464. I noticed you had 464 listed in your specs for that engine but if you only went .40 over than I believe it’s a 462. That may play a small part in your CR numbers being off. I loved that you filmed all of this work… I had a lot of the same struggles you had…. Vacuum leak at the intake and then also a small oil leak at the oil pump. What was the deal with your miss at idle? Was that just a worn set of points? Thanks again for this great content, I subscribed.

    Sounded like it was cranking slow when doing the compression test. I guess it's what you would expect, stock heads / manifold are strangling the top end so the cam isn't able to perform at high rpm. That carb still sounds well off at low speed.

    What did you end up doing to the Q-Jet to end up curing the lean part throttle/cruise condition?
    DEFINITELY harder to calibrate a Q-Jet that it is a Holley 4150/4500, but a Q-Jet is a GREAT street car carburetor once the work has been put in, and it is dialed in for the particular engine that it is on.
    The tiny triple booster primary design offers excellent throttle response and fuel economy when you're just pussy-footin the car around, and then those HUGE secondaries sound SO good when you put your foot into it and get the secondary air door to open up wide... 😁
    I always loved that sound...
    Every vehicle that I've owned that had a Quadrajet on it would also have a flipped over air cleaner lid, just to enhance the sound of the howling secondaries.. 😂

  • @TheEquineFencer
    @TheEquineFencer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I see this is a 12/2021, but trying to go to a Q-Jet from a 500 CID Cadillac might be a good choice. If my memory is correct, it's an 850CFM, not a 650 or 750 CFM that comes on the Buicks, Buicks are not like Chevrolets, they like big carbs. The headers look like some Micky Thompson reproductions IMO. IMO, for the street, you do not want a flat top piston, They were part of a Stage 2 Dealer installed option, the TRW replacements they used to make for the 1970 455 worked great, they were also available in forged. The steel shim head gaskets are OK, or you can deck the heads and use the thicker gaskets. Whatever you cut from the block and heads beyond OEM, I think after 0.030 you need to have custom length pushrods to keep the valve train geometry right. Cutting the block and heads also leads to oil leaks from under the intake. I'd use Red High Temp RTV instead of the rubber replacement seals on the block. Using the newer split lip neoprene rear crank seal also frees up a little HP. Stage 1 valves and unshrouding the valve pockets were a good choice. Port matching the intake and exhaust helps too. Another way to get some "free" HP, is adjusting the oil pressure, having enough volume and pressure at idle, then "just enough to keep it alive" at high RPM, but not too much that it robs power. An adjustable regulator works good. 6* at idle 36* total advance at 3000 RPM is a good starting point with a stock Buick BB for timing. IMO, bang for the buck stock, a BBB is hard to beat for the cost. Add an early model B4B aluminum intake and I think it weighs the same as a SBC. In another life, I used to run the 1/8 mile in a 3600 pound or so Stage 1 455 that went 7.03 best on just motor. As a joke or for fun, we "tweaked" a stock '67 LeSabre 4dr 400 CID with 269,000+ miles on it to run a 10.000 in the 1/8.

    Sorry about the numbers man, you can't win'em all:( Don't sweat the compression - that cam grind is probably goofed. It COULD be a race cam that's completely mismatched to the rest of the motor, but sure doesn't sound like it's got high lift or giant duration. Probably some standard ford/chevy pattern on a Buick blank and sold as a "performance" cam, which is why the power range is messed up.

    Nick, I love yeah to death but, you got me beating on my screen again! Nick, your killin me here ! First there are 3 DIFFERENT Q jets a 600CFM, a 625CFM and the Buick only Stage TWO ! 850CFM ( VERY rare ) The main thing to remember with all Q jets is they all rely on vacuum pressure caused by the AIR CLEANER being installed! Yes! they have no idea what is going on with out back pressure from an air cleaner as that is what stabilizes the secondaries when to open and how much fuel to draw. Keep in mind all Q jets MUST ALWAYS BE JETTED RICH! as they cannot operate at all lean. Many old time drag racers used ONLY Q jets and they can be jetted & adjusted to really get up and put out some very impressive numbers.
    P/S Q jets with headers = EXTRAAAAAA RICH jetting, go up 5 to 7 sizes on the jets and play with the needle sizes and like Smokey Yunicks book power secrets say, READ THE PLUGS! if the plugs show lean put even bigger jets in and don't worry about too rich (hard to do with a Q jet ) until the plugs go black from too much fuel as Q jets flat out LOVE too rich ! I have seen the pros in Q jets drill the jets with a set of number drills! as a rich Q jet with a totally sealed intact air cleaner is a VERY HAPPY carb !

    Hi Nick, I'm new to your engine build/test videos. I find your Buick Dyno's very interesting because the 1970 455's always seem to be Advertised a little low on the HP rating. I just bought a 100% Restored Buick 455 GS that was upgraded by the engine builder to more that a Stage 1 rated HP. I currently have it in a shop for some upgrades. I ran into a problem with ethanol in the gasoline that damaged the Q-Jet internal rubber seals and would never run correctly (could not hold an idle).
    What was done to the engine that started off as a Base 350 HP. First it now has Port matched heads, Stage 1 larger valves and HD valve springs were installed, a Comp Cam with a little more performance specs than the original Stage 1 Cam, the original Q-Jet was rebuilt with larger Jets because the original Q-Jet was a 750 CFM and the Stage 1 Q-Jet was an 800 CFM. I assume the larger jets are because of the larger performance cam was installed. The engine retains it's original cast Irion intake (but port matched) and cast iron exhaust. The only performance addition I'm installing is an electronic distributor, no more points to mess with.
    I will have the engine run on a Dyno to see what HP it's producing. I'm assuming, it is putting out somewhere between 428 HP and 435 HP with the additional performance mods it now has. I hope it does.
    It's rare to find a 455 almost stock, tested on a Dyno. This is only my second Video of your work I have seen so far. Love the detail in your videos, and I love the way you never seem to ever give up trying to squeeze out more HP.
    Just for shows I have retained the original Ram Air system, but, for the street, I will be going with a round 360 degree Air Cleaner. I know the Ram Air is restricting air flow into the Q-Jet and I'm trying to get just a little more HP out of the engine. I don't want to modifiy the engine so much that it will be noticeable at car shows and I don't plan on Drag racing it.
    I have to say, the previous video you did that you have a big problem with a vacuum leak was a real eye opener for me. I have never seen a vacuum leak so difficult to cure before and I've never seen a vacuum like the one you experienced either. Great job of finding and fixing that problem. Love your craftsmanship.

    Well done on the Buick Nick, I notice that the 455 has some similarities to a BB Mopar except opposite, Like the dist. oil and fuel pump. Happy Holidays and a Happy, healthy new year to everyone at Nicks garage. Cheers!!

      On the big block Chrysler the distributor and oil pump are mounted to the block . On the Buick those pieces are mounted to a separate bolt on timing cover . The Buick has the worst oiling system of any V8 from that era , and it was known for failing , resulting in catastrophic engine failures .

      @@HowardJrFord True the Buick 400/430/455 blocks had oiling issues but Buick addressed them in the 1970 MY through I believe some collaboration with Kenne-Bell in West Covina, CA. Jim Bell was the go-to guy in the 60's and 70's to make Buicks fast and I had many phone conversations with him when building my 67 400 block. What follows is what I remember from my conversations and what I did with my engine.
      It was determined the problem stemmed from the large 3.25" main journals. At higher RPM (>5000) the large diameter journals acted like a centrifugal pump creating back pressure on the main oil galley. The back pressure decreased oil pressure and flow and the number 7&8 rod bearings took the hit being furthest from the oil pump. The fix was to increase the size of 3 galleys by drilling them out, using the Stage 1 sump pickup with a 9/16" tube and using the Stage 1 relief spring in the oil pump to ensure minimum 60-65 PSIG oil pressure at 5000 RPM. Bearing clearance was also critical and I believe 0.002" was the recommended max for both the rods and mains.
      Even after fixing the oiling issue the block was the first GM thin casting which lacked the mass and strength in critical areas for really high HP and torque. I believe the block is good to about 600 HP but above that it gets dicey. Some builders had success with girdles but that was well after my time.

    Recurving the distributor to bring timing in sooner might have helped the torque numbers. Shouldn't need over 34 degrees total.

    I would dial the timing back. I know it's cool up there but they are detonation prone. Also most of the time the Buick motors like less timing. Mine always made peak power around 32. I wonder if you're not getting a hot enough spark through the points ignition.
