I, too watch the toaster, when I was younger (like maybe...7?) I was watching it and wanted to touch it but I *knew* that wasnt a good idea (smart 7yo), so I had the *brilliant* idea of taking something else, touching the red bit with THAT, then touching it, so I could feel the supposed heat by proxy, (great? plan?). Guess what I took as my proxy finger? A butter knife! That's when I learnt about fuses, fuseboxes and electrocution. Good times. Over 20 years later, I just watch the glowy redness and when I get the impulse to touch..I remember...
Laurie's facial expressions on this had me dying! Seriously though, who was so desperate for cake with nothing but a toaster that they thought of that instead of going to the shop?
@@angeljustforyoulol I did actually think back thirty years to when I had pregnancy cravings, and wondered if they'd have driven me to use a toaster for cake. My baby befuddled brain would probably have made me think that was an amazing idea lol
One Thanksgiving, my grandmother’s oven went out. She made almost all of the meal, INCLUDING CAKE!!!, in slow cookers! She made an amazing chocolate pound cake type cake in a slow cooker, and gave me a recipe for it that I’ve now misplaced. This video is a grand adventure and I love it!
The trick with cooking a cake in a rice cooker is to use it like a bain marie. Put water in and then the cake in (in a seperate pan!) because the water will stop it turning itself off. It's to do with sensor detecting when the bottom of the rice cooker gets over 100 degrees celsius. If there's always water in the bottom, it won't get oo hot and will stay on. At least, that is what I have been told by rice cooker expert Uncle Roger!
Back in college my friends and I would take the waffle batter at the cafeteria, mix in various toppings and cook it in the microwave to make a mug muffin. I don't remember all that we did, but we got it down to a science. It cooked quickly but it was also delicious and not like the cake you microwaved. I imagine the microwave cake got the consistency it did because of the heat distribution and the amount of batter (having egg in the mix could have caused it too).
OKAY so I have done mug cakes before, but made with cake mix I made from scratch. For this video, we used boxed cake to make it easy. SO my theory is it's either a gross boxed cake microwave thing, OR that it has to do with the volume of batter I tried to do. Because little microwave mug cakes are delicious!
I don't like the texture of microwave mug cakes (maybe because eggs), but I have a mug brownie recipe that's pretty darn good. Melt 2 T. Butter Add: A dash of salt 1/8 t. Vanilla extract 2 T. Milk 2 T. Granulated sugar 2 T. Cocoa powder 4 T. Flour Whisk it, and microwave for 1 minute. 👌
I used to do mug cake in the microwave at the office. One box angel food cake mix combined with one box any other flavor. Then I think 3 T of mix, 2 oz water and 1 minute in the microwave. Angel food mix is key because it has egg in it. I have also done corn bread from a mix in the instant pot.

We lived in a tiny apartment after we got married and our oven died for over a year and all we had was the crock pot so I got really good at crock pot baking. The trick is to put a towel over it before you put the lid on to catch condensation so the top doesn't get wet.
When I was a child, our oven did not work, so my late mother would make vanilla cake in a microwave-proof, donut shaped plastic container. It tasted better than what you describe, though, I believe it is because my mother did it so much she perfected to make it taste good with the texture. It brings back nice memories of eating the cake she would make, as a treat for school with a pastel coloured icing.
7:43 there's also a version of putting water in the pan and a smaller cake tray on top and covering it so it's a steam bake. I've tried that, the air fryer, waffle iron. Rice cooker is great for puddings as well!

I grew up with cakes made in the microwave, though they are often more like puddings than cakes (the British version of pudding - like steamed puddings - not the American one). But also other cakes (Parkin was a good one). We did have specific recipes for it though, not just normal cake batter. You can make excellent sticky toffee puddings in the microwave - as long as you don't put them on for too long. Really easy to burn them in the middle. I also once had an excellent recipe for banana upside down cake in a slow cooker, though we lined it with foil first. The bananas went red-purple. I think you have to adapt the recipes and cook them at the right settings to get the best results.

Fun video Laurie 🤭 Not sure I woulda done the toaster!!! Giant fire hazard there. My Mom in the 70’s baked cakes in the crockpot and the microwave all the time. My mom would use crockpot while doing other things. Not having to be tied down to the oven. I’ve used the microwave to “finish” a cake that wasn’t completely baked in the middle. And I make mug cakes in the microwave all the time. Chocolate cakes bake better in the micro than white. White cakes don’t come out with a very good texture. Too rubbery. But if you need some quick cake for cake pops/cakescicles, definitely a time saver. I I have baked cakes in my instant pot. But honestly, it takes the same amount of time in the oven. So not really worth it.
Ya DO NOT try the toaster lol BIG fire hazard! But all for the experiment. But I did really love the griddle as my go to over any other appliances for a snack cake/quick dessert!
I have done mug cakes many times in the microwave they actually turned good but only do it when I really want for me like piece of cake and yes some vanilla cake recipes do taste different on the microwave. Other flavors have come out delicious

There are recipes out there for making bread & cakes on the stove in a pan. A lot of them don't require flipping. You put the lid on & turn the stove to the very lowest setting or off & you let the residual heat finish it!
you can actually by toastie holders for the toaster, they are literally baking paper but sealed on 3 sides with the top open so you can put your sandwich in and toast it and then take the sandwich out. you can cook cakes and brownies in the microwave because of mug cake recipes. This video was a good idea though, I haven't seen anything like it
I've made cupcakes in an air fryer and mug cakes in the microwave but not the others. I'm surprised they all worked (except the dishwasher), even if they didn't always taste the best 😆
I'd love to see you tweak the amount of batter and time to retry the toaster and see if you can perfect it! This was a really surprising and awesome video.
my freshman year of college I made my bday cake in my rice cooker (the only appliance I had at the time). Took a long time, and it wasn't pretty, but it did the trick. used a box mix in two batches for two layers, and (with much effort) flipped each cake halfway through. Also taped down the "on" button so it wouldn't keep turning off XD def wouldn't suggest it, but gotta work with what you've got.
I do cakes in my air fryer all the time the tip is lower the temp. They take a similar time to the oven but I feel they come out better and no pre heating required. I have a drawer style ninja.
0:48 FYI: even cuter, is my Staub Mini Crock Pot. A teeny, tiny, cast iron pot, perfect for cooking for one or two, or other multitudes of cooking applications. 🤗🤗🤗Just sayin’…
10:14 in RE: the air fryer Perhaps covering the batter in the beginning, and then taking it off? Air fryers super-het the outside of things. Cakes need internal heating. The microwave is all internal, quick heat, and the air fryer is all quick outside heat-precise opposites, in this case.🤗 13:23 Dishwasher: I have always seen foods placed on the top rack. I believe the rising heat may make a difference. I understand why you put it on the bottom, but that is never the instruction, with other things.🤗
We used to have a waffle iron brownie recipe. It was SO good. We used like a Belgian waffle maker for it. I wish I still had that. Also, Betty Crocker has a slow cooker lava cake recipe that's really good. It does take long, but it's worth the wait.
Maybe if you tried egg rings to do mini cakes in the frying pan? My great aunt once cooked salmon in the dishwasher. I think it involves several layers of foil.
My Mom used to bake and decorate cakes and when Microwaves came out her and I took a microwave cooking class. We learned how to make cake and other desserts.
I regularly do cakes in the microwave because I'm lazy. Turns out with chocolate cakes (so long as your ingredients are safe) you can slightly undercook it and get this really nice melty chocolately bit in the inside. Ofc you can put chocolate chunks inside instead, but that's more effort.
My mum uses her airfryer for literally everything, including baking. She'll sometimes come out with bread or brownies which she made while cooking main dishes on the stove 😁

Lol, this was way more successful than I thought!!!
❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
you can actually by toastie holders for the toaster, they are literally baking paper but sealed on 3 sides with the top open so you can put your sandwich in and toast it and then take the sandwich out. you can cook cakes and brownies in the microwave because of mug cake recipes. This video was a good idea though, I haven't seen anything like it
I've made cupcakes in an air fryer and mug cakes in the microwave but not the others. I'm surprised they all worked (except the dishwasher), even if they didn't always taste the best 😆
With the slow cooker, put a tea towel under the lid to absorb liquid. With the air fryer- try a lower temp.
This video was the goofiest of all!! Keep it up, Laurie!
I'd love to see you tweak the amount of batter and time to retry the toaster and see if you can perfect it! This was a really surprising and awesome video.
Absolutely LOVED the sneaky little dishwasher subscribe button 😂 cracked me up
my freshman year of college I made my bday cake in my rice cooker (the only appliance I had at the time).
Crockpot cake does work well, but put a paper towell on the top sealed by the lid to keep iff excees moisture
I've baked homemade rolls in the air fryer before and they turned out excellent.
The microwave is all internal, quick heat, and the air fryer is all quick outside heat-precise opposites, in this case.🤗
13:23 Dishwasher: I have always seen foods placed on the top rack.
That was hilarious. So glad none of the appliances were harmed or I would be running in to you at Walmart again.
I remember my grandma baking cakes in antique 4 burner coal wood stove. It had a oven area in the lower right side
here from tom scott's newletter! thanks tom! haha
I have made rice cooker cake before and it worked out fine! Maybe it's just the ricecooker isn't the best quality.
My Mom used to bake and decorate cakes and when Microwaves came out her and I took a microwave cooking class. We learned how to make cake and other desserts.
Love Archie in the background!!! 💜💜💜
i watch the elements glow red too :) it is not, in fact, normal
i like how your videos dont gave those crazy long and boring intros, u just get right into the video at hand.
