    I find the viewing distance based on SMPTE are just too close, especially for day to day content which is the kind of thing most people will get. I'd add at least 1m distance from what it's recommended. Seating close also makes for a bad experience when it comes to content quality, where you can see all sorts of discrepancies inherent from most streaming providers, including digital tv.

    Whilst it may be possible to scientifically calculate viewing distances I think our preferences are dictated largely by what we have become accustomed to. For years we watched, in comparison with today's sets, very small screens at home whilst visiting cinemas with huge screens.

    • @rangersmith4652
      @rangersmith4652 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree. What size to select depends on whether one wants the cinema experience at home. Remember, only a few rows in any given cinema provide this optimal viewing distance. Does that mean only a few dozen people are enjoying the show? I think not. A lot of people buy a big TV yet they use the set's built-in speakers or a sound bar. Having a "cinematic" screen without the audio to match is never going to achieve the cinema experience.

    • @Assimilator702
      @Assimilator702 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rangersmith4652 The majority of people are not enthusiasts and only average consumers. Large wall mounted screens were once very "trendy". Average consumers wanted to be part of the trend but weren't willing to spend the money on the sound system to go with the screen. Basically sheep following the herd.

    Thank you for the tips. I am planning to graduate from 32 inch FHD tv to a 55 inch 4k tv for an immersive viewing experience. My viewing distance would be a little over 8 feet. I was about to place an order of Blaupunkt 55" QLed which is now available at 43 thousand rupees (I am from India, by the way) on flipkart. However, the 50" one of the same model is 7K lesser. Hence, I got a little confused. Should I go for the 55" one or the 50" one? Should I cut down that extra 5 inch in order to save 7K bucks (big amount though!) and settled for 50 inch? Will I be losing too much of immersive viewing experience? Or should I consider in "bigger the better" theory? If you could help me out please.

      I recommended 65 inch. At 2.6 m you are at the maximum distance, that might be a good idea if you also use the tv for gaming. 55 inch is too small for movies. 75 inch would be better for movies, but might make you seasick while gaming. 65 is a nice trade-off.

      It is not too big. 88 inch equals 2.23 m, so at 2.4 m you are at a distance of 1.08 times the diagonal. That is within the recommended range of 0.8 to 1.6. Not too close and not too far away.

    • @OptimalAudioVideo

      Well, you probably realise that you are way too far away from the screen. Upgrading to 75 inch will give you a bigger picture, but you still won’t get a heightened sense of reality. For that you need to be at about 3 m. You also won’t be able to see all the details in a 4k or even in an HD picture. Sorry to say, but for me that’s not much of an improvement.
