I just wanted to leave you a note letting you know how much I love your channel! I recently (accidentally) found out about the curly girl method. As a curly/wavy girl who has always straightened her hair, I cant believe I have been missing out on this my whole life. I always wear my hair curly on rainy days bc there is no point trying to straighten it but I’ve never been happy with how my hair looks. This has seriously been life changing for me, and it’s only been about a month! Your tutorials have been my go-to and just wanted to let you know how much your advise and videos are appreciated!! You have made a very overwhelming method feel easy and doable!
Awwww, that's the best! I'm so happy you're embracing those gorgeous waves every day now, and not just on the rainy days. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave me this wonderful comment. You make it more than worth the time and effort it takes me to make these videos, so thank you for the love today! I'm so honored to get to help you on your curly journey!
jennifer i have a similar story , this woman's videos have changed my life too. i am so happy i found her. i wish i knew all this before but its never too late. im still trying to figure out many things.do i really need to buy the curly girl book to get on the right track?
I can not thank you enough for this. My hair texture has been changing and I had no idea what to do with it. Tried your recommendations for the first time today and I am in love with my hair!
YOUR VIDEOS ARE A GOD SEND! I've finally broken free of the straight hair, fry my hair method I was on for about a year now! Finding your videos have helped me tremendously and I want to thank you!!
OMG I am so glad I found your channel!!!! So many super curly-kinky girlies out there that are AMAZING, but none that were close to my own waves. Your hair is soooo close to mine 'cept I'm blonde. Ha. My wave has been so 'meh' lately and thanks to you, I realized I needed to clarify. Big difference. Big. Huge. Kinda binged today on you videos and picked up a ton of tips, so thank you. Excited about trying some new products and getting my curl groove back!!
Same girl! Except in three years late lol, I thought this whole time I was going really dedicated curly girl but I wasn't I'm going to try all this out and hopefully I will we amazing results
I love your channel. You explain the CGM method well, plus you are friendly and fun! I just found out about the CGM method a few days ago and i'm referring to your channel a lot for help. Thankfully, I my hair is a similar texture to yours and this gives me hope that I will no longer dislike my natural waves as long as I care for them properly. Thanks!
I don't know if you're going to see this comment or not but you totally changed my hair from bearly wavy with some flat strands with some frizz to a very healthy 2B wavy hair that sometimes even reaches 2C! Thank you so much for the deep condition tip I've applied a lot of useful oils and they changed my hair dramatically. Today is my first deep condition and it has already showed the best results and the best change in my hair. It is soft, fluffy, defined and shiny. THANK YOU SOOO MUCH xx -Greetings from Egypt
Such a great video and channel! Even though I am a 2c / 3a curly, my hair is fine and dry. I learn so much more from your channel and have been going back through you old posts. I encourage other curlies to watch as well! also, I started with budget friendly Shea Moisture and Cantu products, but I am now dealing with the build up issues...this is where your tips have been so helpful as I try to create my long term... healthier hair care routine.
I started a week and a half ago and I went to my mom and cried I was so happy!! I just want to say thank you for ever video you make I swear I never knew I could live without dreading how my hair looked. I have a lot of hair so it "looks thick" but my hair is more fine and nothing I did worked but now I'm seeing it transform THANK YOU and the fact we have the same type makes your videos that much more a hairsaver for me I'm so glad I didn't do the big chop I was gonna do cause I figured my hair was just damaged or something
In the last couple of weeks I’ve started embracing my natural waves and found the CG method, my first CG wash went well and I was like “yay all my problems sorted” and then my second wash was disastrous 🤦🏻♀️😂 my third was better but not great (the dreaded frizz!) so I’ve realised I need to do my research, that’s when I came across your channel and I have to say I just love your videos specifically for wavies!! Thank you so much I can’t wait to keep trying your tips and finding out what works for my waves. ☺️ (p.s I literally started with Shea Moisture so I think you’re spot on there 🤣)
Thank u for this video! U are correct a cotton shirt is much better than microfiber towel & I tried the gel but I got the blue one & I like it! Please keep making more videos! There are not that many that target wavy hair 🙌🏼😁
I'm really happy I found this, I used to have much more defined curls before I had kids. My hair after kids is a bird's nest. I lost my curls and even waves and only have these horrible flyaways on the side of my head, even now, that my "baby" is 4, I still have postpartum hair. I'm hoping this system will help me, I'm tired of the mom bun, I can't even make it look nice, like a cute bun, it really looks like I've just given up.
Thank you so much, I am just starting. Today is my very first third day and I used a styling spray from Cantu yesterday. Well, it felt sticky when I put it in and this morning after using the strawberry thing for sleep time I look like a witch! Oh, do not go by the picture of me in the little circle! My hair is long now and past my shoulders even when wavy/curly. My husband and I went to Ulta yesterday and bought the DevaCurl For All Curl kind set. That's what my sister, who by the way is the one that got me started on this, suggested and told me don't buy anything else. I told her I got a little bottle of ArcAngel and she said "I give up!". So, like a nice big sister I put it back and it was the last one too! I'm tempted to just wash it today but I'm not I may use a little conditioner because after Cantu it feels like straw. My hair is not colored and is totally natural, but has some damage I'm sure from blow drying it straight which I've been doing for years. I just wanted to say thank you for really insisting to read the book, which my sister actually had an extra and mailed it to me! Along with her LUS products she didn't like and another baggie of samples that I haven't tried yet. She really loves me and I love her and wish we lived in the same city. She's also in Dallas but I'm in San Antonio which is where we both grew up! I've watched several of your videos and plan to watch more. But for now I'm sticking to the DevaCurl method until their used up. Happy curly day!
Hi there!!! I just found your channel and am loving it. First of all THANKSSSS for putting all this info together! You are the best! I am determined to start my curly girl journey now. I used to be a 2c wavie in my teens - early twenties BUT have lost so much curl pattern over the years, maybe I am at 2a. I am now in my early thirties and desperate to regain some of those waves. I had read about CG years ago, tried co washing and was a disaster, so ditched it and thought it was not for me. Now after reading about others' experiences I am convinced I did something wrong :( I have now bought the 4 basics you recommended to start with: sulfate free shampoo, silicone free conditioner, leave in conditioner and silicone-free gel. My question is, HOW do I start applying this? What should be the routine? My guess is 1. Wash with sulfate free shampoo and rinse 2. Condition with silicone free conditioner and rinse 3. Apply leave in conditioner to wet hair. Do you use leave-in after every single wash?? even when co-washing? (I intend to add co-washing later) 4. Apply gel over leave in conditioner to wet hair? Is that right? Thanks a bunch!!!! And sorry for so many questions... Much love to you!
hi. i love your videos! i had started to do the ‘natural’ thing after straightening my hair for more than 2 decades. but oh my gosh my hair would get soooo tangled, i always left it in a bun. i used the yes to coconuts shampoo and conditioner, for the deep condition i did coconut oil (but i rarely did it), the leave in i did the shea moisture coconut leave in spray and still nothing. i didn’t know about the gel, which i will try (can putty be used also?). but i just wanted to say thank you so much! because these types of videos are hard to find! the full curl videos are more popular. finally found great advice for my fine wavy hair!!! you rock
I just found your channel and the curly girl method and I am so excited to try this on my wavy curly hair. I have learned a few tricks of naturally curly hair on my own but I am optimistic this might be a game changer. I have just been using curling mousse and scrunching while wet without realizing some important things I should be doing.
Hi! I've following you for a while, and I just love your videos. They have been an enormous help on this recently started journey of mine. My hair looks a bit like yours (except that yours is really beautiful), so I follow your advice regarding products. As you, I cannot wear extremely rich textures. It is not easy nor cheap to find american brands in France (I live in Paris), but I'll manage using online shops. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and knowledge. Lots of love.
Thank you so much for your note, Jo! If you haven't yet tried the Boucleme line or anything by As I Am (which I believe is easy to find and not too pricey internationally), I'd highly recommend those. Not sure about the shipping costs of Bounce Curl to Paris, but I love that line as well. Wish I could give you more local recommendations. Have you found anything that's working for you? I'm sure your hair is really beautiful as well. ;)
Hello, Curly Girl! Thank you so much for replying and for the great tips! I can find Boucleme, wich is the same price more or less than Devacurl. As I Am is half the price, witch is great! I found both (and more brands) on french online shops for African hair. Bounce Curl, they only have a gel. Here, I only found one sulfate free shampoo and one silicone free conditioner, both by the brand Lea Nature: www.leanatureboutique.com/fr/39-shampooings-soins To buy from the States is not only expensive, but here I would be charged with very heavy border fees as well. Have a great week, thank you again for your support. Lots of love from Paris!
I used to use Sebastian Laminates gel. They stopped making it a few years ago. I bought up all that I could get on line. It was great. I have never been able to get anything close to it, for curly hair. I really miss it.
Hello! Just staring the curly girl method for my wavy hair and so glad I came across your channel! How do you preserve your curls overnight? Do you have any recommendations for keeping to the curly girl method while exercising?
I’m SOOOOO happy I found your channel ❤️ my hair is somewhere in between a 2a& a 2b, but as of lately it is literally just fluff if I don’t do anything to it. My waves almost don’t even show up anymore ); but I’ve decided to try out cgh! I got all my products I’m just waiting until my next day off to start since I’ll need to deep condition for a while. I’m sooooo excited I hope I can get my waves back❤️
Hi, I am going to get the deva curl cut/make over. It won't be with Scoot Musgrove, it's going to be with Will champgne. He said let's do this. My hair is good and workable. It should be a really interesting experience. It's a bit pricey but you only live life once,. Tomorrow at 12:00 in Raleigh.I will be really curious to see what he does with my hair! I'll take some pictures. He's going to work his magic on my hair. Pampered for a day, that should be very interesting indeed.
Been doing CGM sense October but have decided I actually want to learn what MY hair needs! Watching all your videos and finally bout this book and am gonna start reading it! Ready to restart this CG Journey! I’m a wavy and am having a hard time to getting my hair to not look stringy weighed down and oily with Shea Moisture.
Just started watching your videos, they are all great. Just wanted to let you know I just received my Xtava Pink Peony hair dryer, it is so pretty I ordered it through Walmart
I didn't know about the green LA Looks gel and it not having the glycerin the blue one has. Funny enough I was just thinking about trying to eliminate glycerin so I might have to pick some up! Thanks!
+Heather Christine The green one does contain sorbitol, but for me, that humectant doesn't make my hair misbehave nearly as bad as glycerin does. Hope it works for you!
I love your videos, thank so much for posting them. I watched like 10 of them; despite the fact that I have tons of tv shows to catch up on, I should be sleeping or studying for nursing finals... I enjoyed your ten commandments video and wavy hair mistakes, they were so helpful. I also love you! You are just like me!! That probably sounds crazy, but whatever!! Thanks for the videos, I can't wait to learn more from you.
Hello! Love your channel - I’m a new subscriber and have started binge watching your videos! I’ve watched a bunch of curly hair videos and they’ve never quiiiiiite worked for me as my hair is more on the wavy side! I was just wanting to know if you’ve ever used Olaplex or have any opinion on it? X
I’m naturally wavy and recently (last week) went sulfate , silicone free (with diva curl products). I wish you could see pictures bc with silicones/sulfates I use to achieve beautiful 2c loose curls and since starting this last week I’m left with Frizz City, stringy, flat, gross looking 2a/b waves at best .... 😩😥🤭.... help!! I air dry, bc I get highlights and diffusers make my hair frizzy... I’ve been watching your channel and absolutely love it! Love how honest and willing to help you are!! Thank you in advance :)
OK - I read the book, have been down in the rabbit hole for most of the past 1.5 days! LOL I'm getting a little overwhelmed, mostly because it seems going curly requires SO MANY products! Oy! I love your videos, good info, good science-y stuff. But I want simpler..... got any suggestions?
I’m just starting. Covid sequester gave me the first extended period of time without heat styling since 1973 and, as an old lady, I found I have curly hair!!! I wonder if I’ve been curly all along.
;) found this I am in my 60's and I had always thought I had straight hair, then remember my bothers and sisters pounding the bathroom door for me to get out, I was blow drying my hair, and never realized I straightened it, now I got long hair still and on one side pinwheel curls and the other straight and fuzzy (dye to much going to go cold turkey and want the at least have nice hair) so 1/2 my head is wavy some pin curls and part nothing but dry fuzz.... so got me lots of products now just have to use them, the only thing I even did was dye and hardly wash due to all washes removed color so just like mom we would not wash our hair, till we really had to. My hair is jacked I just using little girl barrettes and clip it off my face, that is it, nothing at all else, no blow drying niece took it, I just bought some hot curl set still in the box not sure how to use it might have to long of hair. Ugh
I just discovered the curly girl method and your channel! Thank you for simplifying things. When just getting started can you use the As I Am co wash as my conditioner?
+pantherapardus Responding to your comment (below). I'd have to look at the ingredients in those, but I'd more than likely guess all of them (except maybe the NYMKM) contain silicones, which can be difficult to wash out--hence the reason they aren't CG friendly. If you're in the US, the most natural line I can recommend would be Raw Curls. MopTop is also fantastic, Jessicurl, and Boucleme (a UK brand that can be hard to find here). I hope that helps you! ***** I am a wavy girl for sure. I am going to try some of those products. I have some already that i use. I use Aveno sulfate free shampoo. Not sure about their conditioner? For curls I use: Not your mothers kinky moves. It's pretty good. Moroccan curling perfection and L'Oreal Curve it mousse. I can't use all of these at one time. I use one or the other of the above mentioned products and often put the mousse on top of one of these. I am not sure if these products have all of the crappy stuff in them? I'd like to go as natural as possible. Thoughts? Have you tried any of these? I don't have a difuser. I'd have some big hair if I used that I think ;-)
Hi, I'm so happy to have found your great videos as my hair changed from stick straight to half-hearted wavy practically overnight, and I haven't been able to work with it. Like Katie, Sheri and Joni4Az, I'm wondering if I should get the Raw Curls regular or "Swavy". Have you tried it?
Hi, from Israel, very glad to find your channel, I have a kind of wavy hair like yours, a few months ago I’ve gone through a Keratine straightening and now I’m trying to go back to my natural hair, hard but not impossible, you are very didactic and clear with your explanations, I have a question regarding my front (frame) hair, it just doesn’t look good and I find myself always putting it up with a clip... any suggestions for me? Thank and great tutorials!
Hi Laura! It is difficult, but you’re right-not impossible. It’s ok to put it up with a clip, but that will make it harder for that hair to ‘learn’ how to curl. While it’s better to leave it down, it’s best to not hate your hair. So do what works best for you to get through this transition!
I absolutely love your channel. For years I have been struggling with wavy hair, straightening it and damaging it. I wanted to go more natural but everything for curlies seem to weigh my hair down but you have the same hair type as I do! Thank you so much! My question to you is what do you do with your hair for a down day? For example, I’ve been going to the gym in the mornings with my hair in a ponytail, and I know I won’t see anyone but my boyfriend for the day. I hate to do the elaborate styling just to have it in a ponytail but want to keep up with the CG method. Any input would be appreciated! Please and thank you!
You don’t need to do anything at all. Every time you’re NOT using silicones or direct heat on your hair, you’re still following the CG method even if you aren’t styling it. You don’t even have to wash it! But if you do, I’d still recommend the use of a sulfate free shampoo, silicone free conditioner and silicone free leave in conditioner.
I wondered this too..I work from home most days so don't need to look good at all lol. So just wash and/or condition? Do I need to be putting in gel or anything else on these days?
I don’t have a gel yet (just found out about this method today), so I used a mousse instead, also works, not sure how well it compares, gonna try the gel anyway, but still made my waves a bit more defined!
Hello! I am new to this journey, and your videos have been incredibly helpful. I simply cannot believe how much more curl I had in my hair after trying out some of your recommended Raw Curls products and your procedures. I have not read the Curly Girl Method book...not sure if I need to, but I looked it up on Amazon, and it has been updated. I didn't realize the author developed the Deva Curl line of products. Do you recommend I read the original version of the book, or the updated one? Thank you!
Hi there, this video was very helpful. Whst do you use to freshen second day waves. My hair is 2a, and I usually don't have 2nd day hair that I can go out of the house with!!
I've recently started the cg method and am bearing through the transition and desire for suds! Your videos are helpful and you are a pleasant, optimistic person! Have you considered solely using cruelty free products? Thank you!
Your hair is so close to mine, so thx for posting! Don't remember if it's on this video but right now, I am suffereing from BUILD UP! Next time I get out I'm picking up some clarifying shampoo! Thk u. Thk u!
+goldie Responding to your comment (below). I feel AWESOME about using a cream and gel together; I prefer to layer rather than mix them. Cream first, always. :) All-day hold is a common problem for people early in their journey, so don't let it get you down too much yet. Be sure to use a hard hold gel that gives you a good cast to scrunch out, especially one that's low glycerin in high humidity. ***** I started the CG method a few weeks ago and I'm still experimenting with products. How do you feel about using a cream and a gel at the same time? I have 2B hair and my biggest issue I face is keeping my waves held all day. They tend to be so limp at night and I can never go to day 2 without washing.
Just wanted to say how much I appreciate your videos! I am very new to to the CG method, and I have been finding that some of the methods and products recommended for the curlier community don’t seem to work for me: I get a lot of build up and many of the products are too heavy for my hair. My hair can fluctuate between wavy, just like yours, and curlier, depending on the weather, products I use, how long I leave it to dry, and many other factors. It’s all so confusing! So videos like yours are so useful! I only wish i could get hold of some of the products you and other TH-camrs use that might be good for my hair. I spent a fortune getting some Shea Moisture shipped over, but of course I can’t return it, but Raw Curls, As I Am, Devacurl and any of the other CG products are an impossibility here in Spain! 😩
Awww, so glad to have you here! Honored to get to help you. Boucleme is one of my absolute favorites, and is manufactured in the UK - maybe that would be an easier one for you to find? Also, Bounce Curl is usually available internationally, if you have access to Naturalistic Products or Le Curl Shop (France). Jessicurl is another great option you may be able to find relatively easily. Also, I thought As I Am had a large international business?? Hope some of that helps!
Okaaaay, I'm still gathering my start up supplies. I'm so worried to start. My hair gets SO oily, right over my forehead, if I don't wash every day. I'm terrified! Any suggestions?
+faeriesmak Responding to your comment (below). You're so welcome! I'm so glad you've found something that's working for you. Hope you can find something that works for your curly son! ***** Thanks for this! I use Shea Moisture and it works great for me. I have a strange, very textured, but wavy hair type that is dry and can take a lot of oils. My son has really thick, curly hair and was having build up issues. I bet it is the Shea! We were both using the Shea line for Moisture retention. I will have to check out some of the other products that you mentioned!
I just found your channel today and also just discovered I'm a mix somewhere between 2b-3a hair. On the top, it's fairly fine and wavy, but on the bottom it's a bit courser and actually curly. So, I've struggled with trying to figure out the best way to style my hair my whole life! But, I'm hoping discovering this new method and products will help boost up my natural curl and wave better. But, do you ever straighten your hair at all? If so, have you found that it messes with your natural curl pattern too much to where on days you do wear it curly they don't look as good? thanks!!
No, I really don't straighten my hair anymore. It definitely will set you back, but for some people hair health is less important to them than enjoying it as an accessory. You should do what makes you happy, and makes you feel like you. Hope my channel can help you figure out what works for you!
I'm not sure if you'll see this, but I've been watching your videos all day as I'm a 2b/c and medication I'm now on for life have really frizzed out my wavey curls. I'm so excited to get started but I can't seem to find the product i should use the first day. Is that a low poo? A clarification shampoo? Or? I can follow your products and routines once I get going but not sure what I'm to use to prep my hair. Thanks so much for your wonderful videos 💕
+janedavis Responding to your comment (below). Oh no! I knew they were avalable internationally now, but didn't realize at what cost. So glad you got Boucleme. That's the first option I'd recommend for you. Or Trepadora or Jessicurl. ***** I love your recommendations. Went to irder some Raw Hair Organics fir shipment to the UK....was over $75 for shipping! So won't be trying those unfortunately! But I have ordered some Boucleme trial sizes that you recommended in another of your videos I watched. Excited to try these when they arrive :-D
Thank you for making these videos, I appreciate them! I was wondering if you have a good clarifying alternative for the suave. I’ve heard that they changed the formula and added a lot of perfumes to it.
+jenneli314 Responding to your comment (below). A foot?! Goodness gracious! I'm so excited for you! That's a great tip to point out. And yes, you're right -- it's super deceptive! I'm going to be putting together a video soon on how to read ingredient labels. Hopefully that will be helpful to a few folks! And yes, you're right -- it's super deceptive! ***** I just cut off a foot of hair and realized my hair was a lot wavier than I thought it was so I'm dipping my toes into embracing it all and trying to work with it. This was really helpful! I think it would have been good to mention that a lot of products market themselves as "silicone-free" when the ingredients list tells a different story. That was the first thing I noticed when I started hunting for curly-friendly products.
Oh my gosh.... you really helped me... I am also a wavy.. started the curly method for about a month with my daughter (very curly) and me(wavy)... co-wash worked for her very good, but my hair got really heavy... anyways... you really inspired me to not give up. So I bought sulfate-free shampoo here in Germany and it really impacted my hair in a good way. But I still didn't find a leave-in conditioner. Also, pretty sure my conditioners and gel still not so good for me... 🤔will try to find your products in the internet.. hope is not so much charge for germany. Thank you so much.. I really needed the step-by step of someone that had the same hair type. Please keep up your videos... the will save my life🤗
Guten Tag, Louise. Ich wird gut mit mir Deutsch sprechen fur viele Jahre...jetzt, nicht so gut! LOL, tut mir leid, hope you were able to read that AT ALL! As I Am is a favorite brand of mine, and I feel I've heard they're relatively easy to find across Europe. Their cowash is amazing, leave in conditioner is my favorite, and I know they also have a clarifying shampoo, curl enhancer and gel product. I haven't tried them all, but they're on my list. I also adore Boucleme, which is manufactured in London, so hopefully easy for you to find in Deutschland. Good luck!!
real life+curly girl oh my gosh you are so cute. Du sprichst aber gut deutsch ! Ok... working in it then... Pretty sure my husband will kill me when he sees I am buying more products🙈 but he will like the results(hopefully😂)
I just recently decided to try to embrace my wavy hair instead of brushing it all out into a frizzy mess everyday. You have inspired me and also made me feel a little better. Right now I am using love beauty and planet smooth serene lavender frizzy defy shampoo, conditioner, and leave in smoothie cream. I have no idea if I'm doing all of this right or wrong. My hair is very wavy and soft, but I lose most of my waves at night. Any ideas?
Hi! And welcome! I believe that particular line of products isn't all silicone- and sulfate-free. Most people new to CG tend to lose wave/curl faster, but that will improve with time. in the meantime, check your ingredients. :)
Thank you so much for sharing all this with us wavies!! I have ALWAYS had straight hair, perms would not stay, curling irons would not work, heck even curls from rollers left over night on dry hair would drop out by not much longer then lunch. so imagine my suprise when i noticed a curl at the end of my braid. I had been contemplating getting my hair cut for a while, so we cut off about 10 inches, leaving it a few inches longer than shoulder length. After it was cut we discovered somthing shocking, IT WAS CURLY, well ok, just wavy. but still!! so now i am learning all I can about how to care for this new hair that i now have. Thank you again for helping me with guidance in this new journey.
I've just started watching your curly girl tutorials and so far I love your channel! It seems like we have similar hair types, although I'm not sure if I'm 2B or 2C type. I was wondering if you have any advice for my crown hair, which it seems no matter how curly or wavy my bottom layers and around my face are, is STICK straight. No amount of scrunching curls them. Any advice?
Those top layers take more of a beating than the hair underneath. Try deep conditioning just them more often, or treating just them to a protein treatment. Try smasters or my double application method (I have videos on both) on just that section. See what sticks! But accept, also, that we all have varying curl patterns on our heads, and no one will notice it as much as you do.
@@alysonlupo thank you so much for the tips; I'll definitely give those a try! Today is my first official day using the CGM and my top layers already show signs of revival, less frizz and more waves! Thank you again
Sorry, I could not find the information about your hair type? I am trying to find some one with hair similar to mine, but its hard to understand after you have gone far with restoring your hair... Wavy, is it 2a? Do you have fine hair ? It would be great to have a video with yiur story before and after.
Thanks for this vid!!! Only a month in so still solidifying my routine. Odd question: are there any vitamins you would recommend for healthy hair? I have an outrageous amount of new growth that I am trying to grow out.
Good for you! New growth is the best---and the worst. I'm not a hair vitamin girl, most of the time. Biotin is the only thing I would recommend. But be cautious with it, as it makes some people break out.
real life+curly girl that is so true!!! My derm says its new growth but I'm like, 'are you sure it's not just frizzy?!' Because no matter what I do these silly little baby hairs are sticking up all over the place, on my ENTIRE head. Haha! That's a great point about biotin-- I've heard some people say that because its water soluble if you don't drink a ton of a water, then it will cause breakouts. I don't know what it is, but it's always a challenge to do that, especially being a coffee addict :). Have you heard anything positive or negative about flaxseed oil pills?
Hi there I feel I’m echoing the comment before me; but wanted to thank you for your help in transition to the cg method for WAVIES!! I value your sciencey approach and find myself taking copious notes when viewing!! Can I ask.... my hair from ears down is curly, I’m guessing 3a “ish”; however above my ears and the hair laying on top is 2a-2b and looking good in the am but a hot frizzy mess by afternoon... my hair is coarse and low porosity....will time and continued CG method remedy my disastrously wavy/frizz top hair mess? I’d so appreciate any feedback!!
I'm new to wavy/curly hair (thank you pregnancy hormones!) and after almost two years, I'm still lost and trying to figure all this out. Do you have any tips for low maintenance hair? (A little bit of an oxymoron right) My hair is probably about a 2b and with just a normal shampoo, conditioner and air dry, it looks like a frizzy stringy, somewhat curly, somewhat wavy, somewhat straight mess. And being a mom, I don't have a whole lot of time to dedicate to hair care. Also, due to some skin conditions, I have to wash my hair almost every day so most of the time to avoid a mess, I cave and wear it in a pony tail. Mom life... Any suggestions? P.S. I read somewhere you're from Dallas. We just moved to FW from there. Small world!
Hi, Anne! Sorry you had to leave Big D, but I do LOVE FW! The Railhead is my all-time favorite bbq place--check it out, if you're a bbq eater. Hope you enjoy your 'new life' there. :) I understand about needing a low maintenance routine. For me, it's easier to have a relatively involved wash day routine so I can then get away with 3-4 days of almost no maintenance. But keeping your skin conditions in mind, if you have to wash every day, you might consider rotating a cowash into your routine (if that doesn't irritate your skin) to help keep your hair moisturized. As I Am is my favorite. For styling, I love to start with As I Am leave-in. I'm guessing gel might not be your thing. Deva Wavemaker might be a good styling option for you, or you might look for MopTop curling custard at Whole Foods or Central Market. Just use one or the other, though--both would likely be too heavy. Apply on wet hair, scrunch out the excess water with a tshirt, and let it air dry. That should give you enough control to avoid the stringy mess problem. Fingers crossed!
real life+curly girl Thank you! This is a whole new world and you've been incredibly helpful! I started with a hair cut and some layers and will try adding products, and a few other things from your videos. We'll see how it goes. And yes, of course We're big bar-b-q people. And Aggies too! This is Texas after all! 😜
Aggies???? Oh gosh, I'll have to hold my nose when I talk to you then--third generation Longhorn here! LOL, just kidding about the nose-holding part. :) I love any native Texan with my whole heart! Glad to know you!
real life+curly girl Haha I wondered about your ring. It's ok. I have brothers that are Baylor Bears and Longhorns and parents that are Raiders and a husband from LSU territory. And somehow we make it through Thanksgiving without any casualties. 😉 Thanks for all your help.
Thanks for the awesome video, I just started trying to get my natural curls back and going through the transition phase, I tried using curl formers to help it look better and train my hair, what are your thoughts on those? Do they work, are they ok for the hair? I do not want to damage it in any way. Thanks :)
For all my life, I have thought I had straight hair with just a little wave. But today I tried conditioning my hair upside down to see if any curls would appear and I was left with a full head of 2b/c waves. I had a full head of ringlets when I was a baby so this didn't surprise me. However, I have super long hair that gets really tangled after washing. How can I detangle my hair without loosing my waves?
+moonstone Responding to your comment (below). Some people don't seem to get a cast. It depends on a lot of reasons. Could be what you're using underneath it--some conditioners and/or oils can be cast killers. You might also not be using enough to get a cast, so consider quantity when applying. And last, you might try a harder hold gel. Deva Arcangel gel is their hardest hold, so that might be good for you if you like Deva, LA Looks Sport or Spikes gels, or Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee (which you'd really only need a little of) would be my suggestions. ***** I'm a wavy and gels don't give me a cast even after plopping :( I've tried the LA looks, Aussie instant freeze gel, and Devacurl ultra defining gel
+stephaniemay Responding to your comment (below). Thank you so much! Glad this has been true of your journey. :) ***** Wonderful video and excellent advice! You're so right it is a rough start and absolutely gets better and easier with time.
Where do you live? I am in the UK and have joined the UK Curly Girl Support Group as well as the UK Wavy Group on Facebook. Also Boucleme and Jessicurl are sold in Europe. The latter only online though.
Thank you sooo much for your videos! They have helped me a lot with kind of understanding what I am supposed to be doing. I do have one literally itchy question though. I did my first CGM friendly wash, using Jessicul Hair Cleansing Cream, Garnier Banana Hair Food for a conditioner and leave in and Umberto Giannini Curl Jelly. Sorry, if you don't know the latter two products, they are sold in the UK and they are kind of CG friendly (I understand the Curl Jelly has parabens, so it is no longer completely approved). Anyways, after doing my first CGM friendly wash yesterday I ended up with an itchy scalp today. It is not horrible but it is not something I want to have either. I understand that this can happen when you are new to CG, but how long will it last for and what can I do to reduce the itchiness should it become unbearable?
+rebeccam Responding to your comment (below). Well, wow! Thank you! Glad to hear that. And LOL!!! I'm so sorry it wasn't a winner for you. But happy to hear RC was a win! ***** Alyson, your eyebrows are looking fabulous today!! I love your recommendations, you were really helpful to me when I began my journey & this is a great "beginners" video - the only thing I've ever disagreed with you on is the LA Looks gels, good god my hair hates them!! Blech. But, I to am a Raw Curls groupie :)
+erinblur Responding to your comment (below). I'm so glad to help you get back on the bandwagon! And so happy your hair is responding as well. What made you jump leave it in the first place? Going after a different look? Something else? Would be interested to hear! ***** You've been such an enormous help in getting me back into the curly girl method! I did it for a while about 10 years ago and it's been intimidating jumping back in and trying to figure out what works but all your recommendations have been spot on! My hair looks and feels so much better after just a few weeks. Thank you so much :) Your hair looks extra awesome in this vid!
Hey!!! Thank you so much for sharing all this. I recently embraced my curls and I am becoming each day even more happy with them! I have a question though... you do LCEG or LEG every day (in the mornings) or only after Wash day? 🤔 Thank you!
At this point, only LG, only on wash day. Refresh days I do next to nothing, or just scrunch in a little gel with some water. Less is always more on refresh days b/c adding just a little water will reactive your wash day products.
@@alysonlupo awesome!!! Thank you so much! I was building up a lot but was afraid of not using all products on refresh and my curls just fall apart hahaha!!! You are awesome!
Based on your recommendations I ordered products from Raw Curls. I’m a newbie to CGM. They did not work for me at all! In fact my hair is the straightest I’ve ever had in my life!! I did follow all the techniques I’ve seen on your channel and others. But for some reason these products were less than helpful. I would say they actually harmed my waves/curls. Also I think it’s important for you to note that Raw Curls will not accept returns. I would not have ordered from them had I known that. Maybe rethink recommending them and definitely let people know they cannot be returned.
On the Raw Curls site, there is "cleanser", wavy swavy "cleanser" and then the ones that say shampoo don't look like the one you showed in the video. Just wondering if you could clarify which one to buy. Thank you!
I'm still confused!! Lots of jargon and products I can't get in Australia and not much info on how to use them and why.. Please maybe a dot point list for those of us who are more visual! Also to me, silicone and sulfates etc to be avoided for all hair types?? I'll watch some more vids and do some reading... Also at 6 min in you start talking about the gel and at 6.30 you have the same bit in twice, when you start talking about the gel "this big mumma" hehe just thought you'd want to know that for your edit and it confused me even more :)
Sorry about that. Didn't mean to confuse! Wish I could go back and change it! There are lots of CG products you can get in Australia, you just have to really dig to find them. If you're not already, go find @neellovescurls and @curly.linz on Instagram. Linz also has an excellent FB group for curly girls in australia, and she provides lots of resources for where you can find great CG products. Good luck!
i was able to find a small shelf at walmart of Shea Moisture products in vancouver but you're right about most brands being unavailable here. i had to stand in the hair product aisle for an hour and a half googling and settling on different products from the recommended ones
I have fine 2a -hoping to achieve 2b - hair and I wondered if we have to worry about a heat protector? I've seen about 4 of your videos and never do you add one.
Hello! I have a couple questions: What do you do for sweaty hair from either the TX heat or a good workout? Try to make those days on “wash days?” And I include swimming in my workout regimen. Do you have recommendations for protecting wavy hair from the chlorine? I saw one site recommend applying oil or conditioner to the hair before putting on the swim cap. Do you have experience with this? Thank you for your informative site! I am about to begin my curly journey (products in the mail) and I think I have fine 2b maybe 2c hair. Prior to having children I had board straight hair that laughed at curling implements. Now I that I’m coming out of the fog of taking care of babies, I’d like to take care of myself and show them how to do it too.
Well aren’t I looking sheepish. Your first bit of advice was to read “the book.” Lo and behold, my question about sweaty/chlorinated hair is addressed in the first few pages!
How come the shampoo should be sulfate-free and conditioner silicone free? Shouldn't both be silicone- & sulfate-free? Also I'm confused. I thought we were supposed to avoid shampooing our hair? :/
This is exactly what I needed as a new wavy without too much curly this is amazing thank you so much
You have impacted my natural hair journey in such a positive way. I can't think you enough!! Keep doing what your doing!!
you're
Oh goodness, that just means the world to me. Thank you for reaching out! I'm truly humbled to get to help you in your journey. :)
I can not thank you enough for this. My hair texture has been changing and I had no idea what to do with it. Tried your recommendations for the first time today and I am in love with my hair!
+Christina Kates That’s so great! 🙌 Thanks for sharing this with me!
YOUR VIDEOS ARE A GOD SEND! I've finally broken free of the straight hair, fry my hair method I was on for about a year now! Finding your videos have helped me tremendously and I want to thank you!!
Thank you so much! Glad to be here for you!
Oh, I'm so glad for you! Thanks for leaving your sweet comment, and congrats on getting your groove back!!!
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH xx
-Greetings from Egypt
Awww, Nadine, you warm my heart!!! Beyond blessed to have been able to help you. Thank you for taking the time to write me.
real life+curly girl aw I'm glad to xx
I have a lot of hair so it "looks thick" but my hair is more fine and nothing I did worked but now I'm seeing it transform
THANK YOU and the fact we have the same type makes your videos that much more a hairsaver for me
I'm so glad I didn't do the big chop I was gonna do cause I figured my hair was just damaged or something
☺️ (p.s I literally started with Shea Moisture so I think you’re spot on there 🤣)
Hello. Your tips has worked out so beautifully compared to others ! THIS time it really worked and i got awesome curls! Thank you!
Yes to the As I Am leave in!
Yes yes yes!
Thank u for this video! U are correct a cotton shirt is much better than microfiber towel & I tried the gel but I got the blue one & I like it! Please keep making more videos! There are not that many that target wavy hair 🙌🏼😁
Just sent this to my curky friend who wants to try the CG Method. Thank you for this!! Great video! I learned some things too!
Ah! Thank you, Jen! That just makes my day!
Hope it goes well for you! Thanks for writing me!!
Now after reading about others' experiences I am convinced I did something wrong :(
I have now bought the 4 basics you recommended to start with: sulfate free shampoo, silicone free conditioner, leave in conditioner and silicone-free gel. My question is, HOW do I start applying this? What should be the routine? My guess is
1. Wash with sulfate free shampoo and rinse
2. Condition with silicone free conditioner and rinse
3. Apply leave in conditioner to wet hair. Do you use leave-in after every single wash?? even when co-washing? (I intend to add co-washing later)
4. Apply gel over leave in conditioner to wet hair? Is that right?
Thanks a bunch!!!! And sorry for so many questions... Much love to you!
hi. i love your videos! i had started to do the ‘natural’ thing after straightening my hair for more than 2 decades. but oh my gosh my hair would get soooo tangled, i always left it in a bun. i used the yes to coconuts shampoo and conditioner, for the deep condition i did coconut oil (but i rarely did it), the leave in i did the shea moisture coconut leave in spray and still nothing. i didn’t know about the gel, which i will try (can putty be used also?). but i just wanted to say thank you so much! because these types of videos are hard to find! the full curl videos are more popular. finally found great advice for my fine wavy hair!!! you rock
Excellent scientific information! Thank you for providing this; really a helpful video.
You're very welcome!
Here, I only found one sulfate free shampoo and one silicone free conditioner, both by the brand Lea Nature: www.leanatureboutique.com/fr/39-shampooings-soins
To buy from the States is not only expensive, but here I would be charged with very heavy border fees as well.
I’m sooooo excited I hope I can get my waves back❤️
You'll get them back! In the winter it's especially important to deep condition weekly. The low dew points can really mess with our waves!
Pampered for a day, that should be very interesting indeed.
this is literally exactly what I was looking for. I felt so overwhelmed starting a curly hair method
Glad you found this one!
Oh, enjoy!!
I REALLY enjoyed your video! Last night was final wash for me and I just started! You break it down well! Thanks for the video!
So great...thanks!
I love your videos......
Thank you for recommending something other than Sheamoisture!!! I am allergic to shea butter and have been having a hard time finding things
;) found this I am in my 60's and I had always thought I had straight hair, then remember my bothers and sisters pounding the bathroom door for me to get out, I was blow drying my hair, and never realized I straightened it, now I got long hair still and on one side pinwheel curls and the other straight and fuzzy (dye to much going to go cold turkey and want the at least have nice hair) so 1/2 my head is wavy some pin curls and part nothing but dry fuzz.... so got me lots of products now just have to use them, the only thing I even did was dye and hardly wash due to all washes removed color so just like mom we would not wash our hair, till we really had to.
*****
I am a wavy girl for sure.
But if you do, I’d still recommend the use of a sulfate free shampoo, silicone free conditioner and silicone free leave in conditioner.
real life+curly girl perfect! I can slide in a make-up free day too! Thanks so much!
Thank you!
+Jay Emm I’m so happy to hear that!! You’ll be fine with the original version; it’s really just the basics you need. 👍👍
Hi there, this video was very helpful. Whst do you use to freshen second day waves. My hair is 2a, and I usually don't have 2nd day hair that I can go out of the house with!!
I understand. For me, the less product the better! I have a refresh video and demo you may like. Check them out!
This is a new world for me,thank you!!!!!
Brava, great video, brava!!
I've recently started the cg method and am bearing through the transition and desire for suds! Your videos are helpful and you are a pleasant, optimistic person! Have you considered solely using cruelty free products? Thank you!
That was very helpful thanks so much 😊
Your hair is so close to mine, so thx for posting! Don't remember if it's on this video but right now, I am suffereing from BUILD UP! Next time I get out I'm picking up some clarifying shampoo!
Thk u. Thk u!
Thank you so much for your videos!!

I started the CG method a few weeks ago and I'm still experimenting with products.
Hope some of that helps!
real life+curly girl thanks so much! I will give these a go! 👍
Okaaaay, I'm still gathering my start up supplies. I'm so worried to start. My hair gets SO oily, right over my forehead, if I don't wash every day. I'm terrified! Any suggestions?
Then wash every day. Until you feel you can skip a day, then skip it. See what happens. It's ok to take it slow.
+faeriesmak Responding to your comment (below). You're so welcome! I'm so glad you've found something that's working for you. Hope you can find something that works for your curly son!
*****
Thanks for this!
Could you do a video about your favorite curl enhancers?
@@alysonlupo Thanks for replying!
I really enjoy your channel and I’m on day 4 of the CGM. Are there any new products that you are using for this winter?
Check out my Insta. :)
Yep, a clarifying shampoo to start, and then to use to clarify (if you need to), monthly-ish after that. You can do this!
+janedavis Responding to your comment (below). Oh no! I knew they were avalable internationally now, but didn't realize at what cost. So glad you got Boucleme. That's the first option I'd recommend for you. Or Trepadora or Jessicurl.

I love your recommendations. Went to irder some Raw Hair Organics fir shipment to the UK....was over $75 for shipping! So won't be trying those unfortunately! But I have ordered some Boucleme trial sizes that you recommended in another of your videos I watched. Excited to try these when they arrive :-D
another great video :) my hair is so weird even with all the gel i apply, i don't get a cast!
+Diane Mary No kidding?! If I used an oil like Mirror Curls on my wet hair, I know that would kill my cast. And thank you! Worked hard on this one. ❤️
Me too, I think it might be the glycerin in some of our gels because glycerin is a humectant and it attracts moisture to your hair
Thank you for making these videos, I appreciate them! I was wondering if you have a good clarifying alternative for the suave. I’ve heard that they changed the formula and added a lot of perfumes to it.
Oh no! Yes I also love Paul Mitchell Neon shampoo, Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash, and Trader Joe’s Spa Nourish shampoo for clarifying!

I just cut off a foot of hair and realized my hair was a lot wavier than I thought it was so I'm dipping my toes into embracing it all and trying to work with it.
If a happier you is the result, then he will definitely like it. Hope those products do the trick for you!
Found leave-in, co-wash and gel from "As I am" but no shampoo🤔
Mir fehlt DE!!!
Thank you, I will check the ingredients asap.
I'd like to hear your review/opinion on LUS beauty hair products!
Hmmmm, never heard of them. Couldn't hurt!!
Uggg week 2 of my CGM. Dealin with frizz and oilyness i think. I dunno. Prob too heavy handed on d leave in. 😝😭😭😭 bingin on ur videos. Thank u. ❤️🙏🏼
Hang in there!!
Hi there
I feel I’m echoing the comment before me; but wanted to thank you for your help in transition to the cg method for WAVIES!!
So my hair is exactly the same as yours. I'm struggling to keep my curls
Thanks :)
you are so amazing I came across ur channel yesterday and I have to say I'm already hooked on ur videos
Can’t seem to find a link to your products…I checked below after comments but it doesn’t show..

I'm a wavy and gels don't give me a cast even after plopping :(
I've tried the LA looks, Aussie instant freeze gel, and Devacurl ultra defining gel
+stephaniemay Responding to your comment (below). Thank you so much! Glad this has been true of your journey. :)

Wonderful video and excellent advice! You're so right it is a rough start and absolutely gets better and easier with time.
I have collected what i would need and it comes out to 75$ geez plus international shipping
I will need to find european dupes

Alyson, your eyebrows are looking fabulous today!! I love your recommendations, you were really helpful to me when I began my journey & this is a great "beginners" video - the only thing I've ever disagreed with you on is the LA Looks gels, good god my hair hates them!! Blech. But, I to am a Raw Curls groupie :)
I love you videos and I think I've quiet similar hair to yours. How much of the As I Am Leave-In do you use normally on your hair?
+erinblur Responding to your comment (below). I'm so glad to help you get back on the bandwagon! And so happy your hair is responding as well. What made you jump leave it in the first place? Going after a different look? Something else? Would be interested to hear!

You've been such an enormous help in getting me back into the curly girl method!
Great video! New to the curly girl ...
On the Raw Curls site, there is "cleanser", wavy swavy "cleanser" and then the ones that say shampoo don't look like the one you showed in the video. Just wondering if you could clarify which one to buy. Thank you!
How often do you wash. What do you do on no shampoo days
Good luck!
Shea moisture isn't in Canada. Neither are a most of brands that are normally recomended by people.
Are there any extra precautions for coloured hair?
i was able to find a small shelf at walmart of Shea Moisture products in vancouver but you're right about most brands being unavailable here. i had to stand in the hair product aisle for an hour and a half googling and settling on different products from the recommended ones
How often do you wash your hair? also how do you sleep with your hair so you don’t have bed head in the morning? thanks!
About every 3 or 4 days. Silk pillowcase!
I can’t seem to find your plop video...
I'm so glad you found the answers!
How come the shampoo should be sulfate-free and conditioner silicone free? Shouldn't both be silicone- & sulfate-free? Also I'm confused. I thought we were supposed to avoid shampooing our hair? :/
